Australia to take more refugees claiming it will deter illegal immigration….

….say what!

It was only a few days ago we learned that one city, Melbourne, is having a heck of a time with increased crime from its refugee population, here.  Yet, in what looks to me to be crazy logic, the Gillard government is planning to become the second largest refugee resettlement country in the world—after the US of course.

Government to people smugglers:  ‘come on guys, we increased the refugee quota so stop trying to make money by shipping in the illegals!’

From The Telegraph:

Australia said it would increase its annual refugee intake by 40 per cent to 20,000 a year, as part of a plan to deter people smugglers.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the rise, which was recommended by a recent expert inquiry into refugee policy, would include the immediate resettlement of 400 asylum-seekers from Indonesia as a gesture of goodwill

“We will be increasing our annual refugee intake from 13,750 to 20,000 places in this financial year,” Mrs Gillard said in a statement. The financial year began on July 1.

“This is a more than 40 percent increase to our humanitarian intake and the biggest boost to Australia’s refugee intake in 30 years.”

The boost, accompanied by a £6.8 million funding injection to regional refugee programmes, particularly in Indonesia and Malaysia, is part of tough new policies aimed at stopping people-smuggling.

[….]

…the new quota would make Australia the world’s second-largest refugee resettlement country after the United States.  [for new readers: in recent years we’ve (US) taken about 70,000 refugees annually and in addition almost that number have been granted asylum—ed]

Next!  Australia taking refugees from South Africa (the Rainbow Nation!), and they aren’t the persecuted whites!

Oh, and one more thing, for all of you who say from time to time, I’m moving to Australia, forget it!

Kentucky: Iraqi refugee pleads guilty, avoids trial

….Obama Administration thus sweeps the case under a rug!

A highly anticipated trial in Kentucky was called off Tuesday when former refugee Mohanad Shareef Hammadi plead guilty to charges he conspired to help al-Qaida terrorists in Iraq from his comfy home in Kentucky.

See our most recent coverage of the case, here.

Here is the brief story:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – An Iraqi refugee in the U.S. pleaded guilty Tuesday to 10 charges of conspiring to send weapons, money and explosives to al-Qaida in Iraq.

Mohanad Shareef Hammadi, 24, also pleaded guilty to two counts of lying to the federal government about his association with a terrorist organization. He will be sentenced Dec. 5 in Kentucky, where he was arrested in May 2011. Co-defendant Waad Ramadan Alwan pleaded guilty earlier and will be sentenced Oct. 3.

Hammadi had been scheduled to go to trial Aug. 28, but he entered his plea after U.S. Justice Department attorney Larry Schneider told the court Tuesday that the government has “definitive proof” linking him to insurgent attacks after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

“He was either part of Al-Qaida in Iraq or a group affiliated with Al-Qaida in Iraq,” Schneider said.

Prosecutors said Hammadi and Alwan came to Kentucky as refugees in 2009 and soon began trying to send cash, guns, Stinger missiles and other explosives to al-Qaida in Iraq but were foiled by a government informant working on a sting.

Can you just hear the sigh of relief at the State Department and among the refugee resettlement contractors?  Whew!  No more public discussion of how these guys got in!  And, they avoided the spectacle of those US National Guardsmen in the courtroom who believe these two were involved in killing their fellow soldiers.

The Holder Justice Department probably offered him a deal he couldn’t refuse in order to sweep this case under a rug.

Jamaica: UNHCR wants full investigation of murder of human rights activist/attorney

From the Washington Post:

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The UN’s refugee agency on Tuesday called for a full investigation into the abduction and slaying of a human rights activist that has increased worry over crime in this Caribbean country.

Attorney Clover Graham, who was Jamaica’s honorary liaison for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, was found at daybreak Sunday with her throat slashed in tall weeds by the Caymanas Polo Club just outside of the capital of Kingston.

UNHCR regional representative Vincent Cochetel described Graham as a “passionate human rights activist” who worked with the UN agency since 1998 by counseling asylum seekers and helping Haitian refugees find shelter and jobs.

Her son and his girlfriend died the same way four years ago:

Four years ago, Graham’s son and his girlfriend were also found in a field with their throats slashed after they brought crutches and other medical supplies to men they had accidentally injured in a road crash. Two men were recently convicted of those murders, which were dubbed the “good Samaritan” slayings.

The killing of Graham has sharpened crime fears in this violence-wracked Caribbean country of less than 3 million inhabitants. Most of the violence takes place in rough slums, with tourist resorts largely crime-free.

A U.N. study on the Caribbean released earlier this year said Jamaica has had the world’ third-highest murder rate over the past decade…

Who knew!

“Refugees” revolt in Italy again

African migrants continue to arrive in ships (if you’ve read The Camp of  the Saints, the photo here will be meaningful) and foment unrest.

From Adnkronos International:

Ragusa, 21 Aug. (AKI) – Two police were hospitalised with minor injuries in southern Italy following a revolt by more than a dozen Tunisian migrants who feared they would be sent home.

The 14 migrants were arrested in the Italian southern region of Sicily after destroying the detention centre in the city of Ragusa where they were held.

The men, who had only arrived by boat to the Sicilian island of Lampedusa a couple of weeks before, were arrested by the police and accused of resistance and violence towards authorities in Ragusa, a city in southwestern Sicilian where the migrant centre was located.

Yup, that Arab Spring was really a good thing for North Africa, so good they are still fleeing…

So why can’t they go back to Somalia now?

My Somalia alerts these days are filled with stories about how Somalia has a new government after two decades of violence and chaos.  The stories are all filled with encouraging accounts of how Mogadishu is now recovering (I told you about this here just last month).

So tell me why the UN and the new Somali government can’t begin to gather up the young people living in Kenyan camps and return them to Mogadishu to help clean up the rubble and rebuild the city?  You know, sort of like the CCC during the Roosevelt years.    Instead of the West pouring money into the increasingly lawless refugee camps in Kenya, or bringing tens of thousands more to try to find work in American cities, build temporary work camps in Somalia and put them to WORK!

Here is an e-mail I received last evening (we get these all the time) from a candidate for just such a job!
