Russians: Stop Muslim immigration

Update Dec. 23rd:   Baron Bodissey at Gates of Vienna has an indepth analysis and lots of interesting comments on this story here.

It is happening throughout Europe and even in Russia.  Not only is the economy sliding with immigrants and natives of many countries squabbling over fewer jobs, but fear of radical Islamic activity is driving anti-Muslim immigration sentiment.

From the Georgian Daily:

Vienna, December 20 – A call by a Duma member to restrict immigration in order to “fight radical Islam” and a suggestion by Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov that Russian citizens should get the jobs many guest workers now fill appear certain to spark a new wave of inter-ethnic violence in the Russian Federation.

Until recently anti-immigrant statements generally emanated from xenophobic groups like the Movement Against Illegal Immigration (DPNI) or famously outspoken politicians like Liberal Democratic Party leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky, but in recent weeks, these statements have entered the mainstream as a result of worsening economic conditions.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said that he favored cutting immigration quotas in half in 2009, a statement that many in and around DPNI welcomed as a victory for their views and one that appears to have triggered new violence by Russian extremists against people from Central Asia and the Caucasus.

[….]

In his interview, Bagdasarov (Member of the Duma) said that Moscow must adopt new laws to limit the influx of radical Islamist terrorists from Central Asia and the Caucasus who threaten to bring “the global jihad” into the Russian Federation and result in terrorist acts against the Russian people and the Russian state.

I guess Russia is one step ahead of us here, they are at least talking about restricting Muslim immigration.

Refugees fear eviction as economy sinks

So what else is new, refugees arriving in America can’t find work and some, after only 3 months, will have no taxpayer- funded apartment.   Hey, here is a thought, these government contractors, like World Relief, can just get in line with the auto industry and be bailed out with money we are printing.

I don’t mean to be so cynical, but it really ticks me off.   It was only a matter of time before this scheme of government-funded non-profits resettling refugees in a sort of free-for-all competition for bodies would run into trouble.    Increasingly dependent on their government contracts, these volags (supposedly voluntary agencies) have no extensive private charity networks which should have been developed over the last 20 years.

We saw that in Hagerstown, MD in 2007, government contracted church group swoops in with a couple hundred refugees and only 3 churches and a mosque willing to volunteer, and some of those quit because it was too much work for a few.

This program should have been set up mostly around private charity—one refugee family/one sponsor.   Instead it’s a multimillion dollar government program where the heads of some of these volags make 6-figure salaries funded by the taxpayer.

Thank Ted Kennedy, Joe Biden and Jimmy Carter in 1980 for this brilliant idea.

Here is the story that set me off:

While the economic downturn has affected nearly all Americans adversely, new refugees in the United States have been hit particularly hard by the financial turmoil and many are facing possible eviction on Jan. 1. [January 1st because for some unexplained reason we bring hordes of refugees into the US in September as the fiscal year winds down, and their 3 months of subsidized housing ends then.]

These newcomers to America, including those fleeing persecution in Iraq and Myanmar, are often times some of the first to be laid off because they are new employees, explained Larry Jones, director of the World Relief office in Idaho. Other refugees have had their hours reduced, which can be devastating when they earn just $6.15 an hour.

For those who lose their jobs, they face the additional obstacle of finding a new job, which is difficult because of their limited English and job skills on top of a shrinking job market.

“I’ve been working in the refugee community for 20 years and I’ve never seen a time like this,” said Elaine Carson, director of one of World Relief’s resettlement offices in Florida, in a report. “I fear January 1st…it is scary.”

World Relief, an evangelical humanitarian and development ministry with a long history of resettling refugees in America, warns that many of the newcomers will be unable to pay their rent come January.

“We are experiencing this in all our offices across the country as the number of jobs shrinks,” said WR president Sammy Mah. “As we talk to other resettlement organizations, their experience is the same – there simply aren’t enough jobs in the current economic climate.”

I suggest it’s time for Sammy Mah and other top dogs in the refugee industry to take pay cuts to pay these poor people’s rent.

To top it off, we have Refugees International asking Obama for over 100,000 Iraqi refugees for fiscal year 2009.   We can’t support the 13,000 we brought in 2008!

For more pathetic stories of refugees jobless and freaking out about being evicted, go to our Iraqi refugee category where I’ve posted most of these stories.  Two days ago the Wall Street Journal published a story about immigrants now being pushed out of jobs by Americans looking for work.

How they slaughtered a refugee girl in Somalia

The Toronto Star published today a lengthy investigative piece on the obscure life of a 13-year-old Somali refugee girl whose death the world must now notice.  We mentioned the tragic story earlier here, but only now are the shocking details coming to light.

She lived here:

Asho had never known any life other than the refugee camp, about 80 kilometres west of Somalia’s border. Spread across a vast swath of desert, Dadaab was created by the UNHCR, the United Nations’ refugee agency 17 years ago to provide temporary refuge for Somalis fleeing the chaos of Mogadishu. Today, it is the world’s largest refugee camp, home to 230,000 people living in three areas called Hagadera, Ifo and Dagahaley, but collectively known as Dadaab.

How she came to leave the camp and travel to Somalia is still a mystery.  She disappeared in August and her father heard from her on a morning in October when she called crying uncontrollably.  She was not allowed to finish her call.   The family learned later that she had been raped by three men and made the terrible mistake of reporting  the crime to authorities.  Little did she know she was the criminal under Sharia law.

At about 4 p.m. that same day, armed guards dragged Asho before a crowd of hundreds. Her legs were partially buried so she could not escape, witnesses told local media. Then, a small group of men were given large rocks. Before the stoning began, some onlookers tried to intervene, running forward in protest. Militia, members of a radical Islamic group known as al Shabaab (The Youth), fired, and a young boy was reportedly killed.

Rock after rock struck Asho’s head and chest. The breaks came when someone, reportedly a nurse, stepped forward to see if she was dead. Asho had a pulse; the stoning resumed.

Reuters later quoted a witness named Abdullahi Aden who described the scene when Asho was brought “screaming, as she was forcefully bound, legs and hands.” Pictures, surreptitiously taken with a cellphone camera and posted on the Internet, reportedly record the gruesome aftermath. One blurry shot shows the bloodied face of a girl wearing a soiled pink sweater.

After Asho died, someone identifying himself as Sheik Hayakalah gave an interview to Somali Radio Shabelle. “The evidence came from her side and she officially confirmed her guilt while she told us that she was happy with the punishment under Islamic law,” he said.

Asho had been sentenced to death for “adultery.”

Stoning as capital punishment is sanctioned under Sharia law, although the killing of a 13-year-old girl is believed to be a first in Somalia.

Readers may recall that al Shabaab is the Islamic terrorist group reportedly recruiting in the United States and condemning the West to hell.

Immigrant Muslim youths riot in Sweden the nicest country

Update Dec. 22nd:   For more information check out the excellent blog ‘Islam in Europe’ where Esther is following the issue closely (Hat tip: Baron at GOV).

And, be sure to read Jerry Gordon’s “Backhand Bitchslap” at ‘New English Review’. Things are heating up in chilly Sweden.

Sweden is the country in Europe most often lauded for its open door and welcoming attitude to immigrants, but some cities, like Malmo with its Muslim neighborhoods that have become no-go zones, is now having problems with unruly youths, members of the Religion of Peace.  (Hat tip:  Mars)

Dozens of youths have rioted in the southern Swedish city of Malmo for a second consecutive night, setting cars on fire and clashing with police. “We’ve had a very difficult evening,” a police spokeswoman told the AFP news agency late on Thursday.

“There have been fires burning since this afternoon… extensive damage to public property, and… stone-throwing and bomb threats against police.”

She said the trouble was linked to the closure of an Islamic centre.

The owner of the building, in an immigrant neighbourhood, had decided not to renew the centre’s lease. The centre, which included a mosque, had to move out.

So instead of simply finding another building to lease as civilized people would do, the youths are rioting and destroying property.

Come to think of it, George Bush isn’t involved in Sweden either.  Humm!

On being nice:

Just as I was writing this post a couple of people sent me this link to an article in American Thinker by Bill Warner today about how being nicer to Islamic radicals is futile.   Sweden may be the ultimate example of how niceness will get you no where with certain people.

Somali missing youths, an update

Normally I would just put an updating  link on the original post we did on the  missing Minneapolis Somalis.     However, this Wall Street Journal article yesterday had a few important new nuggets of information I wanted to highlight.

U.S. Somali community leaders estimate that as many as 20 men may have left the U.S. to fight in the past two years.  [We’ve heard the number 40 mentioned]

The reports have raised concern among counterterrorism officials about immigrant youths being recruited by radical groups. For years, terrorism experts have believed that better assimilation of immigrants in the U.S. than elsewhere makes the threat of radicalization of young Muslims less than it is in Britain and other countries with large immigrant communities beset by high unemployment and less opportunity. The Somali case could cause that view to be reassessed.

Experts on Islam, like Robert Spencer at Jihad Watch, keep hammering away at the point that Islamic terrorism (jihad) is not a result of poverty, unemployment, or no opportunity, it is an imperative of Islam itself, and we agree.   It is good to hear that maybe our so-called “terrorism experts” might be finally catching on!

Then here is the other bit of new information.  We have been wondering if Somali youths were missing from elsewhere in the US and the FBI seems to confirm that they are.

E.K. Wilson, an FBI special agent in the bureau’s Minneapolis office, said he couldn’t confirm the existence of an investigation, but he said the FBI is aware that “a number of young Somali men from throughout the United States have left, potentially to fight with terrorist groups. We’re in the process of working with the local Somali community to get the parents to come to us with concerns about radicalization of youths.”
