Palestinians in Libya have no place to go

As the Obama/NATO bombing continues in Libya, here is a writer who says that Gaddafi had welcomed Palestinians (most Arab countries do not resettle Palestinian refugees) to the country, many have been there for decades, and now, desperate to escape, they have no place to go.

The article is a bit confusing but some things I gathered from it:  Palestinians have died in the bombing, the UN agencies are confused over who has authority for helping Palestinians since they have their own UN agency (UNRWA), but its jurisdiction is geographically limited.  UNHCR then has helped some, but its outside their authority. The Palestinian Authority has sought permission from Egypt for some to be transported across Egypt to Gaza, but that doesn’t appear to be going anywhere.  Egypt has refused them entry into Egypt.  Israel offered to take 300.  Some may be be supportive of the Muslim Brotherhood rebels, others deny it.

The trapped Palestinians sent out this appeal, so far no response:

“We the Palestinians living in Libya, some for more than 35 years have come from Lebanon to flee (civil) war and resided among our brothers in Libya where we got married and worked. However, after the 17 February insurrection and the worsening security situation, we are trying to leave the country via its ports but were not allowed because of inadequate travel documents. We are now stranded and sell our belongings to eat; we do not have work or shelter and do not know what to do or where to go.”

Read the whole article.  It’s the first I’ve seen about Palestinians trapped in Libya.

An afterthought!  I just remembered that in 2009 when NO ARAB COUNTRY WOULD TAKE ITS FELLOW PALESTINIAN ARABS trapped in Iraq, we started to bring them to the US, here.

Why there is no “right of return” for Palestinian “refugees”

The New York Daily News has published a terrific column by Asaf Romirowsky that tells you what you need to know about Palestinian “refugees” and the Arabs’ demand for their  so-called right of return as part of a peace agreement with Israel. The headline says it: “UN refugee agency poisons the push for Mideast peace:  UNRWA only furthers Palestinians’ suffering.”

The “right of return” is a big deal to the Arabs, which is why–

When Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came out of his lengthy sitdown with President Obama, he focused as much on the question of the right of return of Palestinian refugees as he did on the dispute over the 1967 boundaries. “It’s time to tell the Palestinians forthrightly it’s not going to happen,” said Netanyahu – and with good reason, for within a matter of just a few years, an influx of refugees would effectively erase Israel as a Jewish state.

If Obama agrees, there is a significant step he can take now – namely, working to dismantle the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), whose very existence has been built around perpetuating this so-called right.

The call for a Palestinian right of return is based on a highly specific – and discredited – reading of history, which assumes Israeli responsibility for creating the refugee problem via “ethnic cleansing.” Restitution from the allegedly guilty party, then, involves the eventual return of the refugees and their descendants, even when they are generations removed from the initial “crime” of Israel’s founding.

He goes further into the reasons for dismantling the terrible UN agency UNRWA, concluding:

A UN agency that’s invested in perpetual conflict will not help bring about peace.

Amen. We’ve written a lot about the Palestinian “refugees” and UNRWA. See this search page  or click on our “Israel and refugees” category in the column on the left. But the Romirowsky piece summarizes most of the issues in this complicated subject that most of the world’s media distorts out of ignorance or ill will or both.

Israelis have effective border guards—dogs!

The other day, Barack Obama insulted all of us who want to see our Mexican border sealed by joking and saying the next thing you know they [racists, xenophobes, hate mongers and Islamophobes] want moats with alligators on the border.   No, not yet, but how about dogs!  Dogs are effective against those sneaking into Israel on several levels including the fact that dogs are considered dirty in some forms of Islamic doctrine.

From Yahoo News:

RAMADIN, Palestinian Territories (AFP) – Palestinians desperate for work in Israel will go to extremes to sneak past the West Bank barrier, but now they face a new hurdle — army attack dogs sent to sniff them out.

Workers say the use of dogs to hunt down anyone trying to enter Israel illegally is a new phenomenon which has only been occurring for about two months.

But it is a development which has quickly spread fear and anger among the worker population living in the south Hebron Hills, one of the poorest areas in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The Israeli army readily admits to using dogs in its operations in the West Bank, but says they are only brought in as a way of protecting the sprawling separation barrier from Palestinian vandals looking to create openings which would allow “terrorists” to infiltrate Israel.

“In order to prevent damage to the security fence, the IDF (army) uses a number of different measures, including the canine unit and its trained dogs, while taking appropriate precautionary measures to avoid unnecessary injury,” the army said in a statement sent to AFP.

If the dogs don’t work out, they could try herds of pigs on the border.

Moving more “refugees” to Gaza…

.….and they are Palestinians who’ve never been there before.

Continuing with the major disruption in North Africa (partially due to Obama’s policies) comes this story.  I don’t know what to make of it, but now Palestinians are being taken to Gaza.   Why add more so-called “refugees” to Gaza (to build an even greater army against Israel)?

From Ma’an News Agency:

CAIRO (Ma’an) — An eighth group of Palestinians was evacuated from Libya and transferred safely into Gaza on Saturday evening, officials in the coastal enclave said, as battles between pro- and anti-government forces continue to rage in the North African nation.

The group, accompanied by Palestinian consular representative in Egypt Mohamed Hammad, consisted of 48 Palestinians who had been living in Libya when anti-government protests turned into clashes.

Most have been Palestinian refugees working in Libya, few have ever visited Gaza.
