UN says more refugees need resettlement

So, what else is new?

I’ve been writing this blog since 2007 and I have never seen the UN say anything other than—take more, take more!

Since the US has a goal of 80,000 this year, this would indicate that the US is taking the lions share—again.

From the UN News Service:

4 July 2011 –

The United Nations refugee agency today called on countries to offer more resettlement places for the world’s most vulnerable refugees, warning that unless a deal is reached this year nearly 100,000 people will be left “in an agonizing limbo.”

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said 80,000 places for resettlement – offered to refugees who cannot return to their home countries or settle in the countries where they first claimed asylum – are currently available each year.

But as many as 780,000 refugees are estimated to be likely to need resettlement in the next five years, the agency warned in a press release issued from its headquarters in Geneva.

Last year UNHCR presented more than 108,000 refugees for resettlement, and about 73,000 were eventually resettled with the assistance of the agency, with the most going to the United States.

Obama’s war in Libya isn’t helping the situation either.

Did they tell Michelle about the “xenophobic” attacks in South Africa?

Yesterday Michelle Obama and the girls (literally wrapped in the South African flag) arrived in South Africa to get a first hand look and to pay tribute to the legacy of Nelson Mandela, here.

Saying that throwing off the white oppressors was President Obama’s first political cause, they paid homage to Mandela.

“After leaving here, she proceeded to make a brief courtesy call on former president Mandela,” said Achmat Dangor, the head of the foundation, calling the first lady “a lovely woman without any airs”.

Their visit added to the symbolism surrounding Obama’s journey, with America’s first black family in the White House meeting South Africa’s first black president.

President Barack Obama has called the anti-apartheid struggle his first political cause, and US officials say he has had periodic telephone contact with Mandela, who led the struggle against white-minority rule.

I bet they never told Michelle about the black on black and black on Asian crimes against immigrants to South Africa, here, just days before her arrival.  But, of course that wouldn’t fit into the media (and socialist) narrative about the “rainbow” nation.

Several Somali-owned shops in the South African town of Rothenberg have been attacked by local gangs, looting the properties and stealing cash, witnesses said Saturday.

Dahir Mohamed, a Somali trader and merchant, said that at least 10 shops were looted while three of them were set on fire after all the valuables and cash were taken.

“Fortunately, no Somali refugee was killed or hurt during Friday’s looting related incidents” Mohamed told Radio Mogadishu on Saturday morning, saying that all Somali shop owners and workers fled, fearing being killed or burned alive in their businesses.

He estimated that at least $2 million was taken. The shop owners called local police, Mohamed said, but did not receive any response.

He said that a Chinese businessman whose shop came under attack received an urgent response from the police. China has a diplomatic mission in South Africa while Somalia does not, Mohamed noted.

It is the second such attack in less than month. On May 11, more than 50 Somali-owned shops in the South African city of Port Elizabeth were destroyed and looted by local residents.

Obama sends money for Libyan refugees, invites rebels to set up DC office

The Obama Administration announced, according to this report from a Chinese news agency (Xinhuanet), that it is sending $50 million in aid to “partners” in the North African region to help with “refugees” and the “humanitarian crisis” created by the joyful Arab Spring democracy revolutions.   It was also announced that Obama has invited the rebels to set up an office in Washington. What is that all about?  Do they need to be close to the money pot or are they going to have rebel lobbyists crawling over Capitol Hill, or both?

From Xinhuanet:

BEIJING, May 25 (Xinhuanet) — A senior U.S. diplomat says President Barack Obama has invited the Libyan rebels’ National Transitional Council to open an office in Washington DC.

Speaking in the de-facto rebel capital of Benghazi, “U.S. Assistant Secretary-of-State for Near Eastern Affairs”, Jeffrey Feltman, says the invitation marked an “important milestone” in the relationship with the NTC, and that he was pleased they had accepted the offer. Several countries, including France and Italy, have recognized the NTC, while the U.S., the European Union and others have established a diplomatic presence in Benghazi. In addition, Feltman announced that the US has given more than 50-million U.S. dollars to aid the Libyan people.

He said, “We’ve given today 53.5 (m) million (U.S.) dollars to address the humanitarian crisis that stems from Gadhafi’s attack on his people. This is to international partners who are working in part inside Libya and in part with the refugees who are in Tunisia and Egypt. So, it’s addressing refugee needs outside Libya’s borders, it’s addressing the needs of the people of Misrata and others, it’s through international partners.”

I see that Obama already dipped into the ERMA funds* he has at his discretion back in March for $15 million to Libya, so there must be some new redistribution of taxpayer dollars to “partners” in North Africa in recent days.   Also, Libyan rebels traveled to Washington and London earlier this month looking for money, here, guess they hit the US taxpayer-supported lottery!

We should be happy in one regard, we aren’t airlifting the “refugees” to the US (yet!).

*Readers the Emergency Refugee and Migration Assistance fund is at about $100 million each year, but I cannot find anything at the moment to tell us how much Obama has already spent.

Shelbyville, TN propaganda film to be screened at the State Department

Only “credentialed” reporters will be permitted to attend!

This is your classic Washington elitist ruling class strategy — only preferred media who will be expected to tow the party line will be permitted in the inner sanctum of the Obama State Department, here.

For the other side of the story about the “Welcome to Shelbyville” film, go here.

By the way, the US State Department held a conference call where apparently they couldn’t screen those on the call and I gather they got an earful yesterday.  More on that later.
