Bringing over the family—largest portion of legal immigration to US

CNS.News reported yesterday that who one is related to, not one’s skills or humanitarian need, is the most reliable way to get Legal Permanent Residence (LPR) status putting the “new American” on track to becoming a US citizen.   In 2009 (in a recession!) we gave LPR status to 1.1 million immigrants, 748,000 of them came as relatives to someone who got in here ahead of them. Hat tip: Ed.

Called chain migration, I’ll bet there is absolutely no DNA testing to prove that these people are related at all.

From CNS.News:

(CNSNews.com) – Foreign nationals with family ties to American citizens and green-card holders accounted for about two-thirds (748,000) of the total 1.1 million individuals who were granted legal permanent residency status by the U.S. government in 2009, according to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

The number of foreign nationals who became legal permanent residents (LPRs) of the U.S. in 2009 as a result of family ties (66 percent) outpaced those who became LPRs on the basis of employment skills (13 percent) and humanitarian reasons (17 percent), the CBO revealed in a December 2010 report entitled, Immigration Policy in the United States: An Update.

“People granted permanent admission to the United States are formally classified as legal permanent residents and given a green card,” noted the CBO. “LPRs are eligible to live and work in the United States, own property, and join the armed forces; eventually, they may apply for U.S. citizenship.”

An individual who becomes an LPR or U.S. citizen can then sponsor the admittance of immediate family members into the U.S.

You can readily see how the number will multiply exponentially each year.   See NumbersUSA latest video demonstration of the quantum leap in US population already underway.

Preferred categories

There are five categories under which the U.S. grants permanent residency status to foreign nationals, according to CBO. They include: relatives of U.S. citizens, family-sponsored preferences, employment-based preferences, the Diversity Program, and humanitarian reasons.

The sub-categories under family-sponsored preferences admissions include – First preference: unmarried adult sons and daughters of U.S. citizens; Second preference: spouses and dependent children of LPRs, unmarried sons and daughters of LPRs; Third preference: married sons daughters of U.S. citizens; and Fourth preference: siblings of adult U.S. citizens.

I’m puzzled why unmarried adult sons and daughters would be the highest preference category.  Is it because they are the cheap worker-bees that big business wants?

Diversity Visa

We haven’t written much about it lately, and the mainstream media virtually NEVER mentions it, but readers will be shocked to learn that we have a diversity lottery where those wishing to come to the US from certain under-represented countries, oh, like Yemen and Nigeria for instance, can come if they win the diversity lottery. Here is one story I wrote about this giant loophole in our security.   When this CBO report discusses diversity,  that’s the program they are talking about.  We take about 55,000 lottery winners each year to bring more diversity to the US! No, this is not a joke!

Almost forgot, for new readers, the family reunification program (P-3) of the Refugee Resettlement Program has been suspended for about 2 years due to the discovery of widespread fraud in Africa with mostly Somalis.   Surprise! the State Department learned that as many as 80% of the Somalis applying to bring family were not even related to each other!

I’m looking forward to reading the whole CBO report carefully and am posting this in our ‘where to find information’ category.

Food for thought: Victor Davis Hanson on the degradation of California

This is an article that was published a couple of weeks ago before the Dream Act went up in flames in the US Senate.  I’m just seeing it now thanks to Brad. It’s long but very well worth reading the whole thing.

This little section highlights, I think, the annoyance I see here from commenters at RRW, especially angered at other commenters like Brim who seem to not like America (or at least white America) very much.   Please answer the question Victor Davis Hanson raises.   If America is so awful, so racist, so mean, so (you name it), why are illegal aliens begging to stay, all the while disparaging hard working country class Americans and our western culture?

By the way, the same goes for refugees who disparage America, why stay if this is such a rotten country?  Grateful hardworking immigrants who want to embrace our culture are not the problem.

From National Review OnLine (emphasis mine):

Fresno’s California State University campus is embroiled in controversy over the student body president’s announcing that he is an illegal alien, with all the requisite protests in favor of the DREAM Act. I won’t comment on the legislation per se, but again only note the anomaly. I taught at CSUF for 21 years. I think it fair to say that the predominant theme of the Chicano and Latin American Studies program’s sizable curriculum was a fuzzy American culpability. By that I mean that students in those classes heard of the sins of America more often than its attractions. In my home town, Mexican flag decals on car windows are far more common than their American counterparts.

I note this because hundreds of students here illegally are now terrified of being deported to Mexico. I can understand that, given the chaos in Mexico and their own long residency in the United States. But here is what still confuses me: If one were to consider the classes that deal with Mexico at the university, or the visible displays of national chauvinism, then one might conclude that Mexico is a far more attractive and moral place than the United States.

So there is a surreal nature to these protests: something like, “Please do not send me back to the culture I nostalgically praise; please let me stay in the culture that I ignore or deprecate.” I think the DREAM Act protestors might have been far more successful in winning public opinion had they stopped blaming the U.S. for suggesting that they might have to leave at some point, and instead explained why, in fact, they want to stay. What it is about America that makes a youth of 21 go on a hunger strike or demonstrate to be allowed to remain in this country rather than return to the place of his birth?

Read it all and weep for California.

A food stamp fraud bust in New Haven, CT

It’s not much of a story, but interesting that it’s in Connecticut. We don’t see too many busts in New England.   Also the story doesn’t tell us how much he ripped off the taxpayer for, or whether the money went to his buddies abroad (don’t want to frighten Connecticut liberals I’m guessing), but it must have been a pretty big heist for him to get the possibility of twenty years behind bars.

From the New Haven Register:

NEW HAVEN — The former owner of a Ferry Street market pleaded guilty today to food stamp fraud, federal authorities said in statement.

Talib Jawad Kadhim, 55, of Forbes Place, East Haven, faces up to 20 years in prison and up to a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced on one count of food stamp [fraud] on March 11, the statement said.

Search RRW for ‘food stamp fraud’ and read dozens of posts about this scam where immigrant owners and managers of convenience stores trade cash for food stamps at usually fifty cents on the dollar.

Dream Act dead today in US Senate

From Talking Points Memo:

By a vote of 55 to 41, a cloture vote on the DREAM Act failed in the Senate this morning. That brings an end to the push for the legislation — which would provide a pathway to legal status for illegal immigrants who serve in the military or earn college degrees — until the 112th Congress, which will convene Jan. 5.

That Congress will have more Republicans than this one did, which doesn’t bode well for the prospects of the DREAM Act passing in 2011. As expected, Republicans lined up to stop the cloture vote on DREAM, fearful of being singed by a conservative base that has zero tolerance for immigration reform beyond the type favored in the Grand Canyon State.

Ironically — or perhaps predictably in the current Senate environment — DREAM was a bipartisan bill when it was introduced in the Senate in 2007 by Sens. Dick Durbin (D-IL), Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Richard Lugar (R-IN). Now, defeat of the bill has fallen along largely partisan lines as expected.

But there were a few who jumped ship — Republican Sens. Dick Lugar (IN), Lisa Murkowski (AK), and Bob Bennett (UT) voted yes on cloture. Democratic Sens. Mark Pryor (AR), Jon Tester (MT), Ben Nelson (NE), Kay Hagan (NC), and Max Baucus (MT) all voted no. Jim Bunning (R-KY), Judd Gregg (R-NH), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), and Joe Manchin (D-WV) were absent.

Liberal Sweden joins the club!

That is, the club of Nations that have opened their borders to Muslim immigrants only to be attacked from within.

Sweden’s first Islamic terror attack

Sorry I didn’t get around to posting this sooner, I’ve been away.  But, I did read some early reports and noted that the Swedish press was dancing around the issue of whether this was a case of a Muslim immigrant attacking the country that had “welcomed the stranger.”

Here is an article from the Christian Science Monitor that actually makes the connection between an Islamic extremist and the issue of open borders by western countries to immigrants of all persuasions.   The CSM dares to mention the changing political landscape in heretofore Far Left Sweden.

Two explosions rocked central Stockholm Saturday evening in what Swedish police have called a terrorist attack.

One man, who appears to have been a suicide bomber, was killed, and two people were injured. The explosions occurred about ten minutes after a Swedish news agency and police received a threatening e-mail that referred to Sweden’s troops in Afghanistan and a Swedish cartoonist’s controversial 2007 depiction of the Prophet Muhammad.

The attacks bring the struggle with terrorism to Sweden, which until now has avoided the violent attacks that have taken place in other European nations.

[….]

Resentment toward Islam and Muslim immigrants is rising in Sweden, as in other European nations.

In September, the far-right Sweden Democrats won a surprising 20 seats in Parliament. The group is staunchly anti-immigration, and particularly against Muslim immigrants.

Here is our coverage from back in October about the Swedish elections.   I can always tell when something is happening in Sweden even before I see the news, because this old post, one of our most widely read posts, must be high on search engines.

Endnote! For the most thorough news on European radical Islamic activity visit Gates of Vienna (it is in our blogroll) regularly.  They were on top of the Swedish bomber story from the beginning (because they have contacts in Sweden).  I see they have posted this story from The Mail which has determined that the bomber, an Iraqi immigrant to Sweden, was educated in England.

And, be sure to read “Why Sweden?” by Robert Spencer at Frontpage Magazine, here.
