Another 500 refugees added since yesterday; come on Donald!

The word on the cable networks, as I got up this morning, is that the President will not sign his refugee executive orders today.  I’ll have more on the news I’m seeing in the next post.

As you know I have been tracking the refugee admissions since the morning of January 20th (Inauguration day). On that morning Wrapsnet (also called the Refugee Processing Center) reported that we had admitted 29,895 refugees since the first day of the 2017 fiscal year (October 1, 2016).
This morning the number was 31,521, a gain of 1,626 since Donald Trump became President less than a week ago. The US State Department and its refugee contractors are on a mission to get Obama’s 110,000 in here by September 30th!

We see now that there was a one day jump of 512 since yesterday, a rate that puts them well on their way to that 110,000 goal for the year.

This morning I ran the numbers for 1/25/2017 to 1/26/2017 and got 512!
You can bet that every day the Trump team drags this out, you will see astronomical numbers like that and you can be sure that the UN/IOM is handing out plane tickets like pez candy around the world.
They will then wail and moan that Trump couldn’t possibly dash the hopes of all those with a seat on a plane.
Here is where the 512 were distributed:

Florida is 8 (number cut off in screenshot).  Alaska and Hawaii are zero.

Here are the top ten receiving states over the last 24 hours:

How many refugees so far in FY2017? Daily average has dropped

I just checked the Wrapsnet data base and see that since I wrote last week the daily average of arriving refugees has dropped. Either the data is not up to date as of yesterday (January 15th) or placement has necessarily slowed (we noted problems in Rochester with the huge flow coming in and suspect that could be happening everywhere).
Last week we reported an entry rate of 285 refugees a day (for the first 90 days) and these numbers tell us that the rate is now 257 per day (again assuming the data has been recorded up to yesterday).
Here are some screen shots of FY2017 overall numbers.  I laugh every time I see that Delaware has zero because sweet ol’ Joe Biden helped create the Refugee Act of 1980, yet somehow his home state of Delaware always dodges a bullet.

Florida is 873, Alaska 22, and Hawaii 3 (cut off my screenshot)

Then here is a shot of the top ten states at the moment. I am fascinated to see that Kentucky is increasingly one of the top ten when it never used to be—must mean that Senators Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul are fine with it!  And, we see how impotent Texas is at slowing the flow too!

Look for our Trump watch beginning on Saturday, January 21st! Will he or won’t he ‘pause’ the UN/US Refugee Admissions Program?

Don't miss James Simpson's prescription for what must be done about the UN/US Refugee Admissions program

Investigative journalist, author and popular speaker James Simpson has penned an excellent overview of the Refugee Admissions Program published at The Federalist a few days ago.
Full of facts and figures with many links to more information, it is entitled:

Shut Down America’s Refugee Programs Before They Turn Us Into Germany

Simpson concludes with this prescription for the incoming Trump administration reflecting my views as well:

The resettlement program is dangerous, expensive, and unfair to Americans. Its structure encourages endless growth, systemic corruption, cronyism, secrecy, and duplicity. The refugee program must be put on hold. Members of Congress have called for a moratorium, and such legislation is circulating. H.R. 3314, the Resettlement Accountability National Security Act, has 86 co-sponsors.

But legislation isn’t needed. On his first day in office, Trump can pause the entire program by simply resetting the annual refugee targets to whatever number has already been reached this fiscal year. The 1980 Refugee Act gives him authority to do this, and subsequent court decisions have declared Congress’s refugee resettlement oversight authority as advisory only.

Trump has stated his desire to halt resettlement from nations of terrorism concern. It would be wiser to pause the entire program.

Once paused, the entire system must be either trashed or completely reformed. Congress must do that, and by pausing the program it puts the hammer over reluctant Congressional leaders’ heads! If they want to admit refugees to the US, they can reform it or completely scrap the present law and start all over. But, that fight must be fought.

Trump could easily do what George Bush did in the wake of 9/11!

There is precedent for pausing the program.  George Bush partially paused it in the two years following 9/11.  I just had a look at the ORR Annual Report to Congress for 2003 and entry tables*** are telling.  We went from admitting 94,226 refugees in FY2000, and 87,110 in FY2001 to the following numbers for FY02 and FY03: 45,850 and 39,177 respectively.
Going back to my previous  post where I reported that we have admitted 25,671 refugees in the first 90 days of this fiscal year, if that rate continues until January 20th (adding another 5,704) that means by inauguration day the number for this fiscal year will be 31,375.   And, if Trump doesn’t pause it until January 30th, then we are looking at 34,228 having entered by then (not far off of the Bush numbers).

Your work is not over because Trump must take the initiative to change the law, not just halt or slow the flow during his term in office.
So, pausing, or giving the program a ‘time-out,’ when Trump enters office will not be unprecedented or unreasonable to help assure our safety and will throw the ball to Congress where the law must be changed or in 4-8 years we will be back to square one.

***BTW, I was  interested to see the dramatic drop in Somali numbers from 2001 (4,940) to 2002 (242!). Worried about Somalis weren’t they!

Processing country map is instructive: US Dept. of State working hard to clean out UN camps in Kenya

I find  it interesting to examine Wrapsnet’s ‘Processing Country’ maps when they are updated at the end of each month.  We don’t know exactly who is being processed through each country (these are not necessarily the countries of origin of the refugees being placed in your towns), however we can make educated guesses. Kenya for example….

dadaab
UNHCR camp (Dadaab) in Kenya where Somalis wait for a ticket to your town. This is why Kenya is the #2 processing country for refugees arriving in the US.

Since Kenya, considered a safe country that has hosted huge United Nations camps primarily for Somalis, is the second largest processing country, we can assume that we are working hard to help the UN clean out camps like Dadaab and that large numbers of Somalis are arriving from the camps Kenya would like to close! The Kenyan government believes Islamic terrorists are harbored in the UN camps.
In the first three months of the present fiscal year (Oct. 1, 2016-December 31, 2016) we admitted 25,671 refugees, a much higher number than I have seen for the last 10 years and in keeping with reports like this one from Rochester, NY where the resettlement contractor says they can’t manage the huge flow coming in.
Of the 25,671, Iraqis account for 3,624, Syrians 3,566 and Somalis 3,488 (all terror producing countries).

If Donald Trump doesn’t pause the UN/US Refugee Admissions Program when he takes office, and this rate of entry continues, we will have the highest years for Syrians and Somalis (in 30 years for Somalis!) entering the US.

So here (below) is the latest ‘Processing country’ map (I did not reproduce the South American portion, but know that we are processing small numbers in from there).
Not obvious on this map, and not in the top ten, but noteworthy are the island nation of Malta (in the EU) that sent us 170 illegal alien boat people (calling them refugees) who landed on Malta in just those three months. They are the European Union’s problem, not ours! I have written dozens of posts on this practice that began in the Bush Administration!  See here.
Also maddening is the fact that we are doing the same thing in South Africa where we are taking that country’s illegal aliens (such as the unwanted Somalis) to the US as refugees.  In the first three months we took in 338 from S. Africa. These are not persecuted whites we are admitting! South Africa is supposed to be the welcoming RAINBOW NATION, so why must we take their rejected asylum seekers? Why are their immigration problems ours?

There are so many reforms Congress could be making even if they don’t have the stomach for a complete rewrite of this program, including disallowing such practices as we see going on with S. Africa and Malta!
Here is the ‘Processing Country’ map and note that in many cases these are Muslim countries we are processing from.

Here are the Top Ten Processing countries (remember we don’t know which nationalities are being processed in these locations):

  1. Turkey (3,102)
  2. Kenya (3,064)
  3. Jordan (2,394)
  4. Tanzania (1,768)
  5. Uganda (1,673)
  6. Iraq (1,574)
  7. Nepal (1,458)
  8. Malaysia (1,297)
  9. Ukraine (1,221)
  10. Ethiopia (1,191)

IOM: Mediterranean migrant ships won't stop until Europe finds ways to let them come legally

Invasion of Europe News….

Sheesh! The International Organization for Migration (IOM) yesterday said, don’t stop the boats and the boat people from Africa and the Middle East, find ways for them to migrate legally to Europe. (See former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott tell the Europeans to turn back the boats, here.)

iom-bags
Scene from the movie that fizzled ‘The Good Lie.’

The IOM was for years a quasi-non-profit organization (getting most of its money from governments) and a US refugee contracting agency whose job it was, and still is, to get refugees ready to fly to your towns and cities. You will see refugees in US airports with blue IOM bags.
Now the agency has been folded in to the United Nations and it is one more reason to sever our ties with the UN!
Here, yesterday, they reported on the number of illegal migrants who have arrived in Europe in 2016.

Switzerland – IOM on Friday (06/01) reported preliminary totals for all 2016 migrant and refugee arrivals to Europe via the Mediterranean Sea, as well as estimated fatalities. Arrival totals were 363,348 split almost evenly between Italy and Greece, with much smaller numbers arriving in Malta, Cyprus and Spain. Fatalities and missing migrants reached at least 5,079 although IOM emphasizes that some incidents reported in the month of December and earlier have not been fully accounted for.

According to IOM’s Missing Migrants Project, incidents off Spain, Morocco and Tunisia have been reported whose victim totals could add another 300 or more fatalities to the 2016 total. The year 2016 already is the deadliest for migrants ever recorded by IOM in the region.

The probable addition of several hundred more fatalities recorded in 2016 only deepens the tragedy, said IOM Director General William Lacy Swing, who added, Europe’s frustration with a seemingly endless cycle of migrant rescue followed by reports of shipwrecks and more drownings won’t end until governments throughout the region find a way to manage migration comprehensively.

“Migrants and refugees aren’t coming because they believe their lives will be rescued at sea once they leave Africa or Syria or wherever conflicts drives people to seek safety,” Ambassador Swing said. “They’re leaving because they believe their lives will be doomed if they stay. The answer lies in finding creative means to permit safe, legal and secure migration, be that through work visas, family reunification or temporary protected status. [UNHCR is searching for “alternative pathways” to move the third world to the first since most of these migrants are not legitimate refugees.—ed] Instead of doubling down on tactics that don’t work, let’s use this New Year to try something that’s actually new.”

Italy and Greece suffer the most.

Read the whole article, these numbers are way down for Greece, but up for Italy.
