Polygamy on the rise in US Muslim immigrant communities

We have written on many occasions about polygamy in the US Muslim community, so perhaps the most surprising thing about this information is that it is coming to us from the Huffington PostThe article by Patricia Nell Warren, which discusses all groups practicing polygamy, begins this way (a turn off to me):

One of the religious right’s standard sputterings is that legalizing same-sex marriage will open the door to legalizing polygamy.

But, read on!   Scrolling down to the section on Muslim polygamists, the author has obviously done some homework about Sharia (Islamic law) entering the US along with the immigrants.

The third threat that the DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) crowd see coming is from traditionalists in the U.S.’s growing Muslim population. Since 1900, the U.S.’s Islamic community has been quietly growing; but in recent decades, however, that growth has exploded with an inflow of immigrants and refugees, many of them from fundamentalist Islamic countries where plural marriage is legal. While liberal and even moderate Muslim-Americans have largely abandoned the practice of polygamy, traditionalists still insist on it. Their sacred book, the Koran, authorizes Muslim men to have up to four wives, provided they can care for them adequately.

U.S. census authorities don’t keep stats on religion, so they don’t know how big the Muslim population actually is. Recent conservative estimates put it at nearly 3 million, while liberal estimates push it as high as 7-8 million. Even a middling 5-6 million would make Muslims a sizable voting bloc. Muslim immigrants or refugees who arrive here with more than one wife, though legal in their country of origin, are required to pick one wife as the legal spouse under U.S. law and jettison the rest. However, according to a recent NPR story, there are an estimated 100,000 U.S. Muslims, perhaps more, who are practicing closet polygamy.

We have heard privately that refugees from countries like Somalia have for years brought additional wives to the US disguised as sisters or aunts.   Hum!  That sure fits the scenario that has recently caused the suspension of the State Department’s P-3 family reunification program.  Our source also told us that the volags resettling the polygamous “families” knew or suspected the phoney relationships, but still placed the “relative” nearby in the neighborhood.  The additional wives then were treated as single women with children and got more welfare aid.   The sure tip-off of a “husband” in the neighborhood was a “single” woman with a new pregnancy.

Ms. Warren goes on to explain Sharia law creep:

Immigrant traditionalists who want the same kind of life here that they lived in their countries of origin have discovered a back door into our legal system. Through it, they’re quietly linking their Islamic law system, sharia, with our practice of civil arbitration.

Yup, one more reason to halt ALL MUSLIM IMMIGRATION TO THE US.

Gettin’ to know the new neighbors in Ft. Morgan, the men anyway

A local church in Ft. Morgan, CO hosted a luncheon this week so that folks could learn more about the new Somalis among them.

About 70 Morgan County residents and leaders from the white and Latino communities came together to meet with 10 Somali elders for lunch at the United Methodist Church in Fort Morgan on Thursday.

The crowd, which filled the church’s cafeteria area, included government officials, business leaders, police, educators and a number of teenagers who wanted to ask some questions about the Somali community.

An estimated 250 Somali refugees have been drawn to Fort Morgan for the relatively high-paying jobs at Cargill Meat Solutions, and local people want to know more about their new neighbors, several said before the meeting.

At least they are working, unlike the ones trapped in Postville, Iowa with no work.

If you thought a meeting with the elders might be to determine the power structure in town, don’t worry, these elders don’t rule like they did in Africa.

Somali elders were responsible for making decisions when they lived in their homeland, but now they have a different role, said Abdullahi Aden, a Lutheran Family Services case manager for the refugees. They have a senior voice in discussions held with the refugees on problems and issues of everyday life, but do not rule.

Oh, well, except maybe they rule the women who can’t come out to the local church and eat lunch.

One guest wanted to know if the Somali women would be willing to meet with local women.

Somali women, in particular, feel more relaxed speaking with another woman in their homes, Aden said. They are ill at ease in mixed-gender settings and often reluctant to go to meetings.

They sometimes need a man’s permission to go someplace, too, he said.

Oh, what the heck, that’s their culture and who are we to say our treatment of women is better.   It’s all relative and we broadminded Americans mustn’t pass judgement.

Immigrants to Quebec will be required to sign agreement to assimilate

This is interesting.  Canada has been having problems, perhaps greater than the US has had, in getting immigrants to assimilate and respect Canadian values so Quebec has gone one step further.   New immigrants will be required to sign a declaration that they intend to learn French and respect the values of their adopted country.

Needless to say, the left is furious.  So, you must give supporters of the declaration enormous credit for even pushing the measure.     Can you imagine the uproar if such an effort were attempted here, but maybe things aren’t bad enough here—yet!  From the National Post:

MONTREAL – Future immigrants to Quebec will be required to sign a declaration promising to learn French and respect Quebec’s “shared values,” the government announced yesterday.

In a document with echoes of the controversial code adopted last year by the rural town of Herouxville, immigrants will be informed that Quebec is a democracy where men and women are equal and violence is prohibited.

“Quebecers have said yes to immigration, but they said yes to immigration on the condition that these immigrants integrate into our society,” Immigration Minister Yolande James said as she announced the policy, which takes effect in January.

She added that immigrating to Quebec “is a privilege, not a right.”

There is a lot of information on the web about Herouxville, the town that inspired this initiative.   One story is here.

Sarah Palin criticizes honor killings

This passed by with scarcely any notice; I just heard Bill Kristol mention it on Fox News so I googled it and found this New York Times blog post from October 21. (Kristol was making the point that Palin has spoken on substantive issues but the media has ignored such things in favor of covering her wardrobe.) The post is titled “Palin Criticizes Obama as Faux Feminist,” so who would think she said anything about honor killings? The mention is buried in this paragraph:

Ms. Palin spoke flanked by female supporters she described as members of the Democratic platform committee and the National Organization for Women. She took a strongly feminist tack throughout, criticizing practices such as honor killings in the Muslim world as well as inequities closer to home and singling out female owners of small businesses, especially one she described as “Irma the Restaurant Owner.”

Not news to the mainstream media, but I’m glad to see she knows about it and brought it up — and not surprised. If by some miracle she and McCain win next week, we can be sure she will bring up all sorts of things that make ordinary politicians and the media uncomfortable.
