A reader, Phillip, sent us this very interesting map. It is a little annoying to have to figure out in some cases which flag is depicted on certain states, but it is nonetheless informative. States with dominant populations of Burmese, Bhutanese, Somali, Cuban, Ethiopian, Iraqi or Vietnamese got that way through the Refugee Admissions Program since they are all major refugee-sending countries.
Somalis are dominant in Minnesota and Maine; Iraqis in Tennessee, Michigan and Idaho.
We don’t take many refugees from the Philippines, China, Dominican Republic, India or of course Canada. They get in here through other means. However, the Chinese are the largest group of asylum seekers who successfully get in.
The map makers excluded Mexico (don’t know why). And, I would have guessed the Salvadorans would dominate Maryland.
Here is where Phillip got the map, I don’t have time to examine it further, but you might.

Africans fastest growing immigrant group in America
So says The Economist in an article entitled: ‘Building Afromerica.’
This is an article meant to put your mind at ease by suggesting that a large percentage of the Africans arriving in America are well-educated and live in the suburbs when they get here, thus not adding to inner-city poverty.
We don’t believe that is the case for the refugee portion of the flow (so far!).
However, if Obama gets his way, more will be in suburban towns, see here (educated, or not! impoverished, or not!).
I’m posting this because it includes a statistic I was interested to see—the percentage of legal Africans arriving as refugees and those arriving via the Diversity Visa Lottery.
If you don’t know about the so-called ‘Green Card Lottery’ you need to learn about it!
The Economist:
Relatively few Africans are illegal immigrants (those who are have almost all overstayed their visas). Instead, they have particularly benefited from the Refugee Act of 1980, which brought more refugees to America, and the Immigration Act of 1990, which created special diversity visas, issued by lottery, for people from under-represented countries. According to analysis by the Pew Research Centre, 28% of legal African immigrants who arrived between 2000 and 2013 came as refugees; 19% of them arrived on diversity visas. For all legal immigrants, the equivalent figures were 13% and 4%.
We learned in the first year of writing this blog that one reason the refugee resettlement program shifted to include large numbers of Africans was revealed in a 2007 report:
According to Heidi Boas in her lengthy 2007 paper entitled, “The New Face of America’s Refugees: African Refugee Resettlement to the United States:”
….several of the individuals interviewed for this paper identified the Congressional Black Caucus as one of the most influential groups advocating over the past decade for increased African refugee resettlement to the United States.
Back to The Economist…..
So what legal programs admit the other 47% of Africans? I would like to know!
Then there is this….
African migrants stand out from American-born blacks. Indeed, on most measures, they have little in common but their colour.
And, that is why there are conflicts when Somalis especially are resettled by federal contractors into African-American neighborhoods naively assuming (we can only guess) that since they are the same color they should all just love each other! Not!
As Minnesota goes (demographically), so goes the Nation
Here is a long article published originally at Brookings basically warning America that the white population is fading out, getting old, retiring and dying off and we better darn well educate the immigrants in order to replace us in the workforce.
So far, it isn’t going well as we learned just the other day that half of the Somali population of Minnesota lives in poverty.
Here are a few snips from the beginning of the story (I don’t have the time or patience to read it all!).
Refugee resettlement is named as one of the main reasons for the demographic shift in Minnesota (thank Catholic Charities, Lutheran Social Service and World Relief renamed Arrive Ministries for that! See here!).
Minnesota and the surrounding states of the upper Midwest are experiencing a demographic revolution. Yet that fact and its significance are just beginning to sink in, which is why many residents of the greater Minneapolis-St. Paul area, whatever their own ethnicity, still refer to their community matter-of-factly as “lily white.” And while it’s true that with a 78% Caucasian population the Twin Cities are still far less ethnically diverse than other parts of the United States—among them the far West and Southeast as well as gateway cities and multicultural hubs like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, and Miami—it’s also becoming less true with every passing year. One big reason: immigration.
[….]
As former Minneapolis mayor R.T. Rybak says, “Our diversity is more diverse” than many other places because the state in general, and Minneapolis-St. Paul in particular, have been hubs of refugee resettlement for decades. The region has twice the share of immigrants from Southeast Asia as the United States as a whole (21% versus 10% of the immigrant population), and five times the share of immigrants from Africa as the nation as a whole (21% versus 4%).
Minnesota is home to Mexicans, Hmong, Indians, Vietnamese, Somalis, Liberians, and Ethiopians. Its people of color also include American-born Native Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and African-Americans. According to the State Demographic Center, the Asian, black, and Hispanic populations in the state tripled between 1990 and 2010, while the white population grew by less than 10%. This trend will continue: From 2010 to 2030, the number of people of color is expected to grow twice as quickly as the number of whites. As Minnesota and the region go, so goes the nation, which is also becoming ever more diversified, with an overall decline in the percentage of whites, and increase in people of color.

US Census: Immigrant population boom happening now
This is the headline from the UK Daily Mail yesterday. You may have already seen it:
White US children will be minorities by 2020 after immigrant ‘baby boom’, Census reveals
Here are the first few paragraphs:
White children will be outnumbered by minority kids in the United States in just five years, new Census Bureau projections reveal.
This is the result of an ongoing trend of declining birth among white Americans and a baby boom among immigrant groups, as well as a surge in immigration.
By the year 2020, 50.2 percent of all children in the US are expected to be non-white, according to the Census. By 2044, whites will be outnumbered by minorities.
The Census study, released this week, predicts that by year 2060, nearly 20 percent of the population will be foreign born – thanks to an influx of 64million new immigrants.
The “seedlings” are sprouting at a rapid rate! We are being replaced and Obama is one step ahead of us.
Read it all and see the graphs. Be sure to click on the cute little infographic by Brookings where we are told in gleeful tones that the immigrants will vote Democratic (so as to get their government goodies?)! See the book, here.
Canadian demographer predicts secularists are in decline because religious people have more children
Professor Eric Kaufmann:
“The cumulative effect of immigration from religious countries, and religious fertility will be to reverse the secularization process in the West. Not only will the religious eventually triumph over the non-religious, but it is those who are the most extreme in their beliefs who have the largest families.”
As we have often argued on these pages—demography is it—change the people in order to change the future of nations (ours being of particular concern to me!).
We know that some demographers have argued that fecund people—like Muslims and Hispanics—reduce the number of children they have as they become more prosperous and live in first world countries, but this London demographer (raised in Canada) doesn’t see that—even if reduced slightly, the birthrate of religious people still outpaces the secularists.
Read this fascinating analysis of London Professor Kaufmann’s work at the Vancouver Sun where the photo above catches one’s eye for sure!
Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris and other well-known atheists consider the decline of religion inevitable as the global population becomes more secular, more educated and more urban.
Last month, a Pew Research poll in the U.S., the world’s most-religious industrialized nation, revealed that three out of four Americans also agree religion appears to be in retreat.
But is it? While secularists are making some inroads in North America and Europe, the new atheists and others are missing a crucial demographic shift as the world’s population has swelled to seven billion.
Those who believe the world is inexorably becoming more secular are overlooking the rise in the developing world of Muslims, Hindus, Catholics and Pentecostals, as well as the phenomenally rapid expansion of sects such as the Amish and ultra-Orthodox Jews.
In a challenge to the secularizing proposition, Eric Kaufmann, a noted London-based demographer, projects that religious people, especially conservatives, will win the race against the non-religious in the 21st century.
Why? Basically because religious women are having far more babies than secular women.
Read on. There is a lot more. By the way, I’m afraid that all those non-Muslim religious people (noted by the Professor) combined will not out produce Muslims since their numbers are so much greater to begin with! I guess Professor Kaufmann isn’t going to tell us that.
The Vancouver Sun directs us to an older story about how immigrants high birthrates affect Canadian taxpayers, here.
