Commentary: A Baby’s Dead – Nobody Taught The Refugees

Editors note:  This is a guest commentary from reader ‘pungentpeppers.’

We began resettling the more primitive Somali Bantus in 1999. http://www.bantusupport.pdx.edu/

What’s happening to the money used to settle refugees in the U.S.?  It sure isn’t being spent to teach refugees the basics of life in the U.S.A.

A baby boy, born to Somali refugee parents, might still be alive today if his family understood about smoke detectors.  Officials said 7-month-old Mohamed Ali likely died of smoke inhalation after his family’s apartment building in Phoenix caught fire June 23.  The baby’s mother and grandmother were able to get out the other children living in the apartment, but heavy smoke and a wall of flames prevented them from saving the baby.

The fire displaced about 80 people from the 16-unit complex, which is largely occupied by refugee families. Most have since returned to their apartments.

Per police spokesman Sgt. Trent Crump, investigators believe the family’s apartment didn’t have a working detector — the battery was missing. Crump said that it’s not clear who removed the battery or when.

From Arizona Central:

Fatuma Dubow, a Somali refugee who lives in the complex, said most people from her homeland don’t have electricity, so checking a smoke detector or understanding how it works is knowledge that develops over time.

When asked if she has checked her smoke detector’s battery, Dubow said she didn’t know how.

“I tried one day, but I couldn’t,” she said Tuesday as a maintenance man repaired water damage to her kitchen from fighting the fire.

Another Somali refugee who lives nearby said she knew that smoke detectors were important but was under the impression that they alerted police and fire automatically during a fire.

The woman, who did not want to provide her name, said it takes some immigrants years to learn things such as how to dial 911 or what to do when they smell a gas leak. Some type of instruction would help, she said.

Generally refugee resettlement agencies send a caseworker to meet the family at the airport and drive them to a furnished apartment. [It is in their contract with the federal government–ed].  They are then told how to work kitchen appliances, operate the air-conditioner, lock the doors and windows, run the hot- and cold-water taps and call 911. Cathy Peterson, of Catholic Charities Community Service, said “The heath and safety (primer) would include the smoke alarms”.

It’s plain that this group of refugees were not given adequate instruction or training.  It is unfair to them, and to their neighbors, to settle them in unfamiliar environments that are poles apart from what they are used to, and to expect that somehow, magically, the foreign newcomers will “breath in” our way of life.

If people cannot read or understand the basics, what’s the use of giving them a quick talk and handing them a health and safety booklet?!  Do the refugee agencies expect Phoenix fire officials to teach them our way of life in Bantu?! The refugee agencies get paid big bucks to bring people here, but their profit-maximizing, hare-brained “bring ’em and dump ’em” scheme – well, it just cost this baby his life.

Boston: Somali former refugee charged with rape (possibly more than one)

Just for a little change of pace tonight from the ever-expanding crisis on the border, ho-hum we will return to our never-ending Somali crime stories.  This time from Boston last week….

Somali Said Said facing rape charges in Massachusetts. Photo: Boston Globe

From the Boston Herald (Hat tip: crime sleuth ‘pungentpeppers’):

A second reported rape in the Seaport District by a livery driver in less than a year has the city’s taxi union and a South Boston state representative demanding a crackdown before another young woman is attacked in the trendy nightspot.

“This is a real public safety issue, particularly for women in my district,” said Southie state Rep. Nick Collins. “It’s something that we have to resolve and I’ll be looking to work with the city to come up with some new legislation.”

Said Said, 40, of 97 Doane St., Quincy, was ordered held on $35,000 cash bail yesterday at his arraignment in South Boston District Court after pleading innocent to charges of aggravated rape, unarmed robbery and receiving stolen property.

Police allege that at midnight Sunday, Said, who is of Somali descent, picked up a woman in a livery minivan outside Legal Harborside restaurant on Northern Avenue and took her to a deserted South Boston location, where he raped her and stole her cellphone, cash and credit cards before dropping her off on State Street.

He used the victim’s credit card.  Pretty dumb wouldn’t you say!

Police said they were able to track down Said after he was reportedly caught on surveillance camera using the alleged victim’s credit card to make a purchase at a Walgreens Pharmacy in Quincy.

The victim identified Said in a photo array set up by Boston police, according to court documents.

Attack is similar to one that occurred last summer:

Sunday’s alleged assault was eerily similar to an attack that occurred Aug. 6, 2013, when a woman told police she flagged down a livery sedan in South Boston thinking it was a taxi and was instead driven to a secluded area in Newton, where she was raped and assaulted by the driver.

Somali voter fraud alleged in Minnesota House race

One hundred and forty Somalis registered to vote using the same address (where no one lives).

Phyllis Kahn vs. Mohamud Noor. http://politicsinminnesota.com/2014/04/kahn-noor-gird-for-house-60b-primary/

From KSTP news:

Absentee voting started Friday, six weeks ahead of primary elections. Already there are strong allegations of voter fraud.

The attorney for Phyllis Kahn says he got word Thursday night; there might be hundreds of people who are registering and voting using an address that’s not their home.

Absentee voting kicked-off Friday morning in a hotly contested democratic primary race for the state house between incumbent Phyllis Kahn and Mohamud Noor.

Brian Rice, attorney for the Phyllis Kahn Volunteer Committee, claims there’s voter fraud.

“I think there is a coordinated effort to use this address to bring voters into the DFL primary election on August 12, that’s what I think is going on,” Rice said. “It’s wrong, it violates Minnesota Law, it’s a crime.”

According to voter registration records from the Secretary of State’s office and the DFL Voter Activation Network more than 140 people used 419 Cedar Avenue South in Minneapolis as their home address, when they registered to vote.

The address is for what’s called Cedar Mailbox Center. The building manager and mail center’s employees weren’t comfortable speaking on camera, but they said they were surprised by the allegations.

They say nobody put the wrong address on purpose. For 13 years, many Somali-Americans from all across the state have been getting their mail there. They say nobody lives there.

This is the same Leftie political campaign/squabble that ended in fisticuffs back in February and the police had to be called in.

Why so many Somalis in Minneapolis?

I think that every day for over the last three years, this post (Why so many Somalis in Minneapolis?) has remained in our Top Posts.

Al-Hijra helpers!

Thank the US State Department and three federal contractors— Lutheran Social Services, Catholic Charities, and World Relief Minnesota—attracted to the state by generous welfare goodies gratis Minnesota taxpayers.  And, I would bet a buck that Phyliss Kahn and the DFL have been cheering the flood of Muslim migrants to the state for decades.

That reminds me, I wonder if Minnesota will be “welcoming” the unaccompanied minors from south of the border?  Do you live in Minnesota?  If so, call your state refugee coordinator and ask if the “kids are coming?”  Here is the list of all state refugee coordinators.

Somali stowaway miracle boy update (soap opera resumed after short interlude)

I don’t even know why they are bothering to publish a story like this one—-boy cries when talking to Mom in Africa (Mom cries too).  Incredible news!

The tearful Mom: I’ll be there soon honey!

See our previous posts here.

So why does the Dad need CAIR to speak for him?

However, we do learn that Mom is still trying to get to the US on an asylum claim.  Miracle boy does not live at home with Dad and wicked step mom.  Miracle boy hopes to live with aunt in Minnesota (yeh, Minnesota here comes one more!)  And, CAIR is speaking for miracle boy’s Dad.

From AP at the Sioux City Journal:

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — A Somali immigrant who survived an arduous flight to Hawaii stowed away in a jet’s wheel well says he was trying to reach his mom, a refugee in Ethiopia who says her teenage son broke down in tears this week during their first call since his ordeal.

Mother Ubah Mohammed Abdule, who is seeking U.S. asylum, told The Associated Press Wednesday her son, who she hasn’t seen in eight years, cried on the phone Tuesday and told her he thought she was dead.

[….]

A family spokeswoman forwarded questions on Wednesday from AP to father Abdilahi Yusuf, a Santa Clara taxi driver, about why his son is not living with him. As with past requests, Yusuf has not responded. The spokeswoman, Zahra Billoo with the Council on American-Islamic Relations, says the family wants to maintain their privacy.

Here we had one teenaged “refugee” who wanted to go back to where he came from, and we won’t even let one go.

And, whatever happened to all of the talk of criminally charging the boy?

Minneapolis Somali leader: al-Shabaab recruitment efforts present 24/7

FBI ramps up investigation of Jihadist recruitment among Somali refugee youths—this time for Syria.

Farah is executive director of Ka Joog which he says attempts to keep young Somalis from joining Jihadists.

Here we go again!  Give them the good life—food, shelter, medical care, education—and they use it to grow warriors for Allah.

From Minnesota Daily:

Agents from the Minneapolis office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation are collecting information from Cedar-Riverside residents as part of an ongoing investigation spurred by recent allegations of American citizens joining Syrian rebels overseas.

Rumors that neighborhood residents are illegally fighting in conflict overseas prompted agents from the FBI to ramp up their already-existing presence in the neighborhood earlier this month, said Minneapolis FBI spokesman Kyle Loven.

He said agents are actively interviewing residents and informing them about the allegations, while also trying to figure out if anyone in the community is involved.

“We’re looking for information that would indicate that someone intends to travel to a country where there’s armed conflict,” Loven said.

[….]

Citizens are allegedly joining rebel forces in going against Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s government.

[….]

Mohamed Farah, executive director of Ka Joog, a Minnesota Somali youth group, said al-Shabaab’s recruitment efforts are present in the Somali community “24/7.”
