Again, Refugee Camps are NOT Experiencing the Chinese Virus in Great Numbers

Months ago I began following the dire warnings from the international humanitarian industry and its media arm about the “vulnerable” refugees living cheek by jowl in massive camps where social distancing and wearing masks is not happening.

But, surprisingly the high numbers of cases and deaths that have been predicted are not happening.

See my previous posts here, here, and here for example.

An April 2nd AP story about the highly anticipated spread of the virus among the world’s most “vulnerable.” https://apnews.com/5bf8d0ce6f3ff0e2746317ba372d0999

This morning I dutifully (because I promised I would continue reporting on the topic) began searching for any updates that might have happened while I was busy on other issues over the last couple of weeks, and guess what!

There is no explosion of cases, no COVID “wildfire” blowing through camps.

The only story of any interest was this one, but it mostly focuses on the fear/mistrust Bangladeshis have of the Rohingya refugees living in their country—fear that the refugees are spreading disease, which they aren’t.

I know you have more important concerns, but I think it is very strange that the predicted “carnage” has not arrived.  The lack of spread raises questions about the whole concept of social distancing as a means to stop the virus.

From Nikkei Asian Review:

Rohingya scapegoated as Bangladesh battles COVID-19

DHAKA — “Two more Rohingya die from corona: Locals in panic” — screamed a recent newspaper headline in southeastern Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar.

Social media has sometimes been equally hysterical. One college teacher posted on Facebook that lack of awareness about COVID-19 among Rohingya refugees from Myanmar “will lead to our collapse.”

In August 2017, more than 740,000 mostly Muslim Rohingya fled a brutal military crackdown in northwestern Myanmar’s Rakhine state and entered Bangladesh as refugees. The United Nations described it as a “textbook example of ethnic cleansing.” Bangladesh already had 200,000 refugees from earlier Rohingya exoduses that began in the 1970s.

The novel coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated resentment in the densely populated country toward the refugees, and also brought further uncertainty to their chances of repatriation.

[….]

Abdul Mozid, a rural physician, runs a drug store near Kutupalong camp, a sprawling settlement made of bamboo and plastic sheets that is home to over 500,000 refugees. “Camps are like slums,” he told the Nikkei Asian Review. “People are scared that this will spread the coronavirus.”

More here, but it is mostly about the Rohingya Muslims and the fact that Burma, a Buddhist country that wants to remain Buddhist, doesn’t want them there, populating and pushing for Muslim control of the country.  LOL! The article doesn’t say it, but that is what is happening.

There was this other interesting bit of new news on the issue of the Chinese virus and its impact on refugees, or lack of any great health impact so far.

It is about a World Health Organization study where they are trying to assess the impact of COVID-19 on refugees and migrants.  It is called ‘Apart Together.’

Maybe because they aren’t finding enough sick refugees, they are switching focus to find out about the “psychosocial impact of COVID-19.”

(I assume planning to use the results to badger western countries once the panic dies down.)

ApartTogether is a global study to assess the public health social impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on refugees and migrants. It is a collaboration between World Health Organization, across its regional offices, the UN System, and a consortium of research centres led by Ghent University (Belgium) and the University of Copenhagen (Denmark). The study aims to better understand how refugees and migrants experience the psychosocial impact of COVID-19 and how they deal with any challenges that have arisen.

In collaboration with key UN partners, the insights from this survey will be used to inform policy and decision-makers on how they can better support refugees and migrants during and after this pandemic. The survey runs until 31 August 2020.

UN to Italy and Malta: Let the Mediterranean Migrant Flow Continue!

Invasion of Europe news….

The Chinese Virus crisis has caused legitimate concern to European frontline countries which have been the target of migrant boats launching from Libya.

In recent weeks, Malta and Italy have been forcing ‘rescue’ boats back toward the Libyan coast infuriating ‘aid’ agencies and the UN which claim that, “departures from Libya during the first quarter of the year rose four-fold over the same period in 2019.”

It’s been awhile since I reported on the Mediterranean route to Europe from the north African coast, primarily from Libya.

Hillary and her gal pals are directly responsible for the hell hole that is Libya today.

Just a reminder that the chaos that is Libya today is a direct result of the Obama Administration’s policy then crafted by Hillary Clinton (with Rice and Power) that brought down the government of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, not exactly a decent guy, but his absence opened up the sea route, a fast lane, for the invasion of Europe.

See my Hillary and Libya archive here.

From Middle East Monitor:

UN urges EU member states to disembark rescued migrants

Two UN agencies on Thursday called on Malta and other European countries to speed up efforts to bring to dry land some 160 rescued refugees and migrants from Libya, who remain at sea aboard two private vessels after two weeks, Anadolu Agency reports.

Earlier this month, Italy impounded the German rescue ship, Alan Kurdi, after its latest batch of migrants was quarantined offshore for two weeks due to the virus crisis in Italy.  https://news.un.org/en/story/2020/05/1063592

Middle East Monitor continues:

The UN Refugee Agency and International Organization for Migration (IOM) warned that direct or indirect state involvement through the commercial Captain Morgan vessels in the return of the rescued migrants and refugees to Libya might violate international law.

“UNHCR and IOM unequivocally reiterate that no one rescued at sea should be returned to Libya,” said the statement.

“The misery and risk to life posed by intensifying conflict, arbitrary detention, and widespread human rights violations, amongst other factors, meaning it cannot be considered a place of safety.”

Necessary health measures undermine reception capacities in some Mediterranean States due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, prompting the UN agencies to offer support for the effective and speedy processing of new arrivals.

[….]

The UNHCR and IOM noted that the Mediterranean countries had been at the forefront of receiving sea arrivals in recent years and that their efforts, along with non-governmental organizations’ search and rescue vessels, had prevented many tragic deaths.

“However, the UNHCR and IOM are also deeply concerned about reports that States have been ignoring or delaying responses to distress calls, especially amid a sharp decrease in state-led and NGO search and rescue capacity,” said the statement.

EU Countries Fall Short on Promise to UN to Resettle 50,000 Refugees (over two years!)

Invasion of Europe news….

President Donald Trump admitted 30,000 refugees to the US in the last fiscal year (ended September 30th), but did you know that the entire European Union could not resettle 50,000 in a two year period!

They might argue that well, heck, we have tens of thousands (hundreds of thousands!) arriving illegally and asking for asylum, but so do we!

However, the tone of the international media is consistently anti-US, anti-Donald Trump (aka the meany), yet here is news from Deutsche Welle completely lacking in any snarky tones about European big mouth heads of state NOT MEETING their promised target of 50,000 OVER TWO YEARS!

Not surprisingly, Deutsche Welle blames the inability to get the job done on those pesky right wing citizens.

EU breaks promise of safe passage for 50,000 refugees

European governments, including the German government, have failed to deliver on a pledge to admit 50,000 refugees by this month, DW has learned.

The European Union launched the resettlement program two years ago with a deadline of October 31, 2019. But only 37,520 people have arrived in Europe under the program so far.

You need to know that the UN Secretary General Guterres is a past socialist prez of Portugal. So it is especially humorous to me to see how lousy Portugal is at welcoming refugees!

A spokesperson for the European Commission has admitted the target will not be reached by the end of October.

[….]

Germany was one of the countries leading the EU resettlement initiative. Last year, Chancellor Angela Merkel publicly promised to accept 10,200 people under the program. A spokesperson for the country’s Interior Ministry told DW that just 4,800 had arrived so far. He said that the delay in forming a government after German elections in 2017 had led to “complex organizational preparations” for the refugees’ arrival being pushed back.

[….]

The resettlement program is supposed to offer a safe route for some of the most vulnerable people fleeing conflict zones such as Syria and Libya. It is intended as an additional option to the right of asylum.

[….]

EU Commissioner Avramopoulos’ term in office ends on October 31, so the task of coordinating any future EU resettlement program will fall to his successor Margaritis Schinas, who has been at the center of controversy even before starting his job.

Schinas has been appointed under the new title of commissioner “for Protecting our European Way of Life” — a name which critics said mimicked the rhetoric of far-right populists, who claim immigration threatens European values.

Many political parties across Europe have made immigration an election campaign issue, taking a lead from populist parties and the far-right.

Africa Expert Leonie Jegen https://www.ies.be/user/284

Leonie Jegen, a migration expert at Germany’s Arnold-Bergstraesser-Institut, said resettlement was a divisive issue among EU countries.

“Resettlement is something that is not completely off the political agenda, but discourse around refugees has shifted in a negative direction in recent years,” she said.

UN Migration pact: Austria out, Poland and Czech Republic to follow?

That UN Global Compact for Migration could crumble as more countries signal they won’t sign the document in Morocco in December.

We told you about it here recently.  President Trump took us out at the very beginning and then Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban also said no way.

Sounds warm and fuzzy, so what is the problem?  Those who have studied the draft say it would make migration a human right.  In other words everyone would have a right to move wherever they wish.  There would be no more legal migration process.

From the liberal Irish Times (so they don’t clearly mention the real crux of the problem):

Poles and Czechs follow Austria and Hungary in rejecting UN migration pact

Anti-immigration leaders in central Europe follow US lead in opposing global framework

Poland and the Czech Republic are set to join Hungary and Austria in pulling out of a United Nations pact on migration, as populist central European governments attack the deal before it is even signed.

Arbour: But we just want to control migration chaos via the United Nations!

The Global Compact For Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration was agreed in July by all UN members except the United States, and sets out norms for protecting and integrating people who migrate and ways to help them return home.

The pact is non-binding and recognises each state’s right to its own migration policy, but a growing number of anti-immigration leaders in central Europe are now rejecting it ahead of next month’s signing ceremony in Morocco.

“It is very likely that, like Austria, the Czech Republic and the United States, we will not be part of the UN global compact,” Polish prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Friday.

“We believe that here our regulations, our sovereign rules on border protection and migration control are our absolute priority.”

A day earlier, Czech prime minister Andrej Babis declared that he also opposed the pact.

“It’s not clearly interpreted and it could be abused. The United States has pulled out, Hungary too, now Austria, and Poland is debating it as well,” he said.

“I don’t like the fact that it blurs the distinction between legal and illegal migration. . . I will propose to partners in the government that we should do the same as Austria and Hungary,” he added ahead of cabinet talks on the pact next week.

I would like to know exactly what was left out of Babis’s statement in that previous quote!

UN to Trump: You must let them in!

Here we go again!

The United Nations is demanding that we follow international law and let those fleeing violence in their Central American countries (not a criteria for granting asylum) into the US.  What happened with that supposed effort to tell Mexico to grant them asylum—that is what international law says!

The first safe country asylum seekers reach is where they must ask for asylum.

Clearly the UN is endorsing the concept of “asylum shopping” a term used around the world where migrants are on the hunt for their best deal.

But, you know all of that.

The caravan is an anti-Trump public relations stunt in the run-up to the midterm elections and it seems the whole world is in on it.

Here is Voice of America (with a photo of the starving mass of humanity!):

UN: Countries Must Allow People at Risk to Request Asylum

If VOA was trying to get sympathy for the marchers, this photo is a poor choice!  Just saying!

GENEVA —
The U.N. refugee agency is urging Washington to allow people fleeing persecution and violence, including those who are traveling with the Central American caravan, to request asylum on U.S. territory.

U.S. President Donald Trump has vowed to prevent a caravan of thousands of immigrants from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador from entering the United States. The Pentagon has announced plans to send hundreds of troops to the border in what is described as a support role.

The U.N. refugee agency will not weigh in on whether it is legal for a country to close its borders to refugees and asylum seekers. But it says international law clearly states any person whose life may be in danger has the right to seek asylum and benefit from international protection.

What you see happening with gobbledygook in that previous paragraph is a strategy to make you think that every person on the move anywhere is a legitimate refugee.  We aren’t there yet, but the UN is driving public opinion in that direction.

There has to be a reason for “danger,” generalized danger is not a reason for granting asylum.  To be granted asylum a person must prove that he or she would be persecuted for race, religion, political views if returned to one’s home country.  Running from gang violence or poor job prospects does not make someone a refugee!

Andrej Mahecic
UN spokesman Andrej Mahecic says there are security risks for the migrants as they travel through Mexico.  Well gee, is that our problem? The UN can simply and easily get them back to their homes. (If they were really that concerned.)

“Our position globally is that the individuals who are fleeing persecution and violence need to be given access to territory and protection including refugee status and determination procedure. And, if the people who are fleeing persecution and violence enter Mexico, they need to be provided access to the Mexican asylum system and those entering the United States need to be provided access to the American asylum system,” he said.

But to get to the US they must pass through Mexico!

So that (above) tells me that any migrant caravan marchers who didn’t ask for asylum in Mexico when they crossed in to that country are admitting they aren’t asylum seekers after all.

Hence when they reach the US border they will all be illegal aliens and we can keep them out!

Mahecic keeps trying to send his message:

He said it is urgent to stabilize the situation, to provide proper reception and to improve basic conditions for people on the move. In regard to people seeking asylum, he says their international protection needs must be properly assessed before any decision is taken on their return or deportation.

More here.

Remember that Mahecic and his bosses are trying to drive public opinion world wide to their view that migration is a human right.  If they succeed then obviously that spells the end of the concept of national sovereignty.

Trump’s America First! message is completely antithetical to the UN’s objective, thus their on-going effort to destroy him.

Don’t you just feel like telling the UN to shut up! Of course, using only non-violent means by cutting off their funds entirely!
