Clever phrase by Grandi but a whole lot of average Europeans (Americans too!) are asking why it is their responsibility to save the African continent.

UN refugee chief says Med migrant rescues ‘taken hostage’ by politics

The head of the U.N. refugee agency says returns home among the millions of Syrians living abroad are few, and insists that rescues on the Mediterranean Sea have been “taken hostage by politics” — and must be restored.

58 migrants who had been kept out at sea for days have now disembarked in a deal that will divide the group four ways. Filippo Grandi also urged Myanmar’s government to do more to create the conditions for Rohingya Muslims to return home. Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have fled to neighboring Bangladesh to escape a bloody crackdown since August last year.

The wide-ranging address by Grandi at UNHCR’s annual executive committee meeting on Monday comes as the European Union has been riven by discord over how to handle an influx of migrants in recent years — though the rate has dropped off from a record high in 2015.

The new government in Italy, which has taken a stricter line on migrants, has refused to allow in some boats that retrieved desperate people who left from Libya, dropping the dilemma of whether to take them in on fellow EU countries like France and Spain.

Grandi, who is Italian, appealed to Europe to preserve its asylum policies. He noted that Libya — the main launch point for migrants hoping to cross the Mediterranean — has strengthened its coast guard in recent months, but not its other institutions.

As a result, more would-be migrants and refugees have been getting forcibly returned to Libya, and “that means more and more people exposed to exploitation and detention — in horrific conditions.”

“Responsibility-sharing has been replaced by responsibility-shedding,” Grandi said, alluding to the EU squabbles. “Pushing people away cannot be the answer, and negotiating disembarkation boat by boat, even when successful, is not a good option.”

The nub of the problem: the African population is rising at an unsustainable rate

I guess you are shouting at your computer screen right now! DUH! OF COURSE IT IS!

And, frankly, Europe, by allowing itself to be the pressure release valve for that expanding population is actually encouraging even further population growth there and in the Middle East.

Here is a picture worth a thousand words at Quartz. It is to illustrate an opinion piece entitled:

We need to talk frankly about our rapid population growth in Africa if we want to beat poverty

No kidding and it better be more than talk!

You can read the whole thing yourself, but here is one small snip:

Based on current trends, Africa as a whole is projected to double in [population] size by 2050. Between 2050 and 2100, according to the United Nations, it could almost double again.

Once the migrant taxi service is stopped in the Mediterranean, the UN, the EU and African leaders better get to work on the African continent and stop being too chicken to address the population growth there.

By the way, the same goes for the US. Encouraging the flow of refugees from Africa to your US towns does nothing to help Africa get their population under control.

Panama revokes registration of Mediterranean migrant transport ship Aquarius 2

The NGO that has been acting as an immigrant “taxi service” was shocked to learn that as of now they have no flag under which to fly.

It has been over four years since former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott told the Europeans, in April of 2015, that they must turn back the boats carrying Africans and Middle Easterners to Europe. They are finally getting to it. It’s just too bad that hundreds of thousands got in during those interim years.

Panama revokes registration of last migrant rescue ship in central Mediterranean

MILAN (Reuters) – The Panama Maritime Authority has revoked the registration of search and rescue ship Aquarius 2 in a move that means there will be no charity rescue ships off the Libyan coast in the near future unless the vessel can find a new flag to sail under.

Aquarius 2, the one remaining charity rescue vessel still operating in the Central Mediterranean area, is currently at sea with 58 survivors on board.

The decision by the Panama Authority (PMA) means that once the ship comes into port it will be deflagged and will not be allowed to operate again unless it can find a new flag.

Salvini grim — Salvini: it is a Mediterranean “taxi service” for migrants!

SOS Mediterranee, one of the charities that operates the Aquarius, said in a statement it was reeling from news of the revocation, which it said followed pressure from the Italian government.

“On Saturday … the Aquarius team was shocked to learn of an official communication from the Panamanian authorities stating that the Italian authorities had urged the PMA to take ‘immediate action’ against the Aquarius,” it said.

Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said the Italian government had applied no pressure on Panama.

A public backlash against the arrival of hundreds of thousands of seaborne newcomers in the past five years helped put Italy’s anti-establishment ruling coalition into office.

Salvini has led a popular crackdown against immigration since his League party and the anti-establishment 5 Star Movement took office in June.

Salvini has previously accused SOS Mediterranee and other charities of acting like a Mediterranean “taxi service” for the migrants.

Italy’s Salvini says Europe is importing African slave workers rather than having more children of their own….

‘Merde alors!’: Salvini draws fury with reference to African ‘slaves’

Italy’s far-right interior minister, Matteo Salvini, has compared African immigrants to slaves, prompting Luxembourg’s foreign minister to retort angrily using the French curse “Merde alors!”

The fiery exchange between Salvini – the leader of the League, which governs in coalition with the populist Five Star Movement – and Jean Asselborn occurred during a behind-closed-doors session at a European conference on security and immigration in Vienna.

Salvini on facebook — Salvini posted a video of the exchange on facebook!

Salvini, who immediately launched a crackdown on illegal immigration when his coalition government came to power, proudly published a video of the interaction on his Facebook page, alongside the post: “The Luxembourg [foreign] minister declared this morning that we need migrants because Europe is ageing. I told him I instead work towards young Italians (and Europeans) returning to bringing children into the world, because we don’t want new slaves.”

In the video, Salvini speaks about “being paid by citizens to help our young people start having children again in the way they did a few years ago, and not uproot the best of the African youth to replace Europeans who aren’t having children any more. Maybe in Luxembourg there’s this need; in Italy there’s the need to help our kids have kids, not to have new slaves to replace the children we’re not having.”

Asselborn, sitting two seats away from Salvini, gets increasingly agitated as the minister speaks, before interrupting in French with “allez, allez, allez”.

Salvini then says: “Your opinion is not mine. Maybe in Luxembourg there’s a need for new immigration but in Italy there’s a need to help people have children.”

The Dalai Lama makes headlines while speaking in Sweden: Europe belongs to the Europeans!

Refugees should go home and rebuild their own countries!

You’ve probably seen the news, The Dalai Lama, the present leader of the Tibetan Buddhists recently spoke in Malmo, Sweden and shocked many by saying Europe is for Europeans and refugees should go home.

pope on lampedusa — In July 2013, Pope Francis went to the Italian island of Lampedusa to welcome the migrants to Europe from Africa, to say mass for them and to lecture Italians about being more welcoming. He and The Dalai Lama are obviously not on the same page!

However, before you get too excited, The Dalai Lama did say that Europe should help the refugees get on their feet, and then send them home. (I’m thinking he doesn’t subscribe to the goofy notion that diversity is strength!)

Here is a bit of what Newsweek says about his talk:

The Dalai Lama—oft-considered the embodiment of peace and tolerance—has suggested Europe should only be for Europeans, telling refugees to go home and rebuild their own countries.

In comments made at a conference in the city of Malmo, in southern Sweden—which is home to a large immigrant population—the spiritual guru said that while Europe should offer safe haven to those in need, refugees must not stay forever.

Most-Admired-2015-14 — Although a few years old, see Sweden’s Most Admired people! It will be interesting to see where The Dalai Lama ranks in a new survey.

According to Agence France-Presse, the leader said Europe was “morally responsible” for helping the refugees who fled war, hunger and persecution in their homelands and are “really facing danger against their life.”

He even said European nations must “help them, educate them” and ensure they have a good quality of life. However, the Dalai Lama also suggested these efforts must be made with the provision that the migrants will eventually leave.

“I think Europe belongs to the Europeans,” he added, noting that governments must be honest with new arrivals about the fact “they ultimately should rebuild their own country.”

But, if one is honest, therein lies the rub. Frankly some people and cultures are incapable of building their countries.

How many chances over hundreds of years have African nations had to do that, but they just can’t get it done. The most recent example is South Africa a once prosperous nation eroding before our eyes.

Muslims continuous squabbling among themselves keep most of the Middle East from prospering. So they and the Africans are flowing out to find a better (easier!) life somewhere else.

Building their own countries is hard work after all!

Newsweek continued with a discussion about the recent election there and downplaying significant election gains, says the anti-migrant party didn’t quite get enough votes to control the government.

Islamic imperative….

One thing The Dalai Lama may not understand is that Islam dictates that Muslims must migrate to spread their ‘religion,’ so all of the migrants are not simply looking for a better life. It is called the Hijra.
