This latest disease is not one that immediately comes to mind like TB and HIV/AIDS that we usually hear about. BTW, American readers should know that even our “screened” refugees are permitted entry into the US with TB and HIV. http://www.slideshare.net/saeidzaxo/diphtheria-ppt
From Outbreak News Today (never heard of it, but maybe it is time to follow this news site!). Story titled: ‘Europe reporting imported cutaneous diphtheria in refugees’
People are fleeing certain African and Middle Eastern countries in large numbers and many are headed to the countries of Europe. In fact, one report notes that about 5,000 people flee Eritrea each month, according to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the UN refugee agency.
One of the things that can come from refugees and asylum seekers are infectious diseases contracted in their home country.
Europe is currently reporting cases of cutaneous diphtheria in asylum seekers to several countries to include Denmark, Sweden and Germany. To date, nine cases have been reported by the three nations.
The disease is contagious and can be deadly. More problems and expense for Europe’s socialized medical system. Go here for our ‘Invasion of Europe’ archive. And, for new readers, you should know that we have a ‘health issues’ category, here (with 278 previous posts on health problems of refugees).
You have probably seen all of the news this week from Calais, France where illegal aliens who got into Europe elsewhere are piled up looking to get into the UK where they think they will get the most social service benefits. BTW, legitimate asylum seekers are supposed to ask for asylum in the first safe country in which they arrive. Asylum shopping is what is happening here.
From the International Business Times: Calais, France: Africans make a run for the tunnel and the UK. Photo: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/calais-crisis-for-desperate-migrants-its-england-or-death-as-they-brave-dogs-riot-police-and-speeding-trains-10425270.html
After thousands of migrants made repeated attempts to storm the Channel Tunnel that connects the French port of Calais with Britain this week, politicians and newspapers in the country have begun talking tough. Whether British authorities can match the determination of migrants, many of whom have endured dangerous, months-long journeys in their quest to reach England, however, remains uncertain.
Over 3,500 attempts have been made by migrants, many of whom are from countries in Africa, the Middle East and central Asia, to enter the tunnel this week. The deployment of French riot police, armed with pepper spray, dogs and batons, has not succeeded in stopping the attempts, though on Wednesday, the latest day for which data is available, only 300 people were reported to have tried to access the tunnel, down from 1,500 each of the previous two nights.
A Sudanese man died on Wednesday, after being hit by a truck that transports vehicles through the tunnel, French police said, according to Reuters. French media said he was the ninth migrant to be killed in the crisis since early June.
Prime Minister David Cameron warned migrants Thursday that the U.K. was “no safe haven,” for them, adding that illegal immigrants would be removed from the country. Earlier in the week, he described the thousands of migrants gathered in Calais as a “swarm,” prompting angry condemnation from rights groups and opposition politicians.

I am continually amazed that our so-called leaders, especially the Republicans, don’t see what is happening in Europe and know that we are headed down the same path. Do you think that some Romans saw the fall of Rome in advance?

Ho hum! So we are bringing refugees from the highly touted welcoming-to-all “Rainbow Nation” of South Africa, dropping them off in San Francisco and now whining about how there isn’t enough housing for them. Maybe one of the well-paid staffers at the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) might welcome this gay refugee to their home!
A long sob story at the Bay Area Reporter: Isn’t HIAS PAID to take care of the refugees it resettles? Why is San Francisco gay refugee saying this: “In the U.S. I am facing homelessness,” Mayema told the Bay Area Reporter in a recent interview. “I don’t want to end up on the streets.”
“Our biggest challenge in helping these people is to find housing for them,” said Amy Weiss, the director of refugee and immigrant services at Jewish Family and Children’s Services of the East Bay. “They come with no employment history and no housing history. San Francisco is hard enough to find housing if you have an income. It is a huge problem for us and for them and to anybody resettling refugees.”
The agency is believed to be the only one in the country that has developed a specific program to work with LGBT refugees. It began four years ago when a number of Iranian LGBT refugees, who had fled to Turkey, needed help resettling in the U.S.
Since then the agency has worked with a number of LGBT refugees, mostly gay men from Africa and the Middle East. In November Junior Mayema arrived from Capetown, South Africa, where he had fled five years ago from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Then look at this, even the UN High Commissioner for Refugees refers to the attack (the star of this story claimed he suffered) as an “alleged attack.” So, he was resettled in America even though it was never proven he was attacked in S. Africa?
UNHCR staff, after learning about Mayema’s alleged attack, referred his case for resettlement last summer. Four months later, according to the account, he was granted refugee status and, in November, arrived in the Bay Area where he received assistance from the Jewish agency and a local church-sponsored group in acclimating to his new surroundings.
And, by the way, as we admit hundreds of refugees from the supposedly welcoming country of South Africa, you can bet there are few if any persecuted white people in the group. I wonder if a white person pretended to be gay or lesbian and said he or she was attacked, could they get in to the US from South Africa?
The sob story goes on and on, continue reading here. It is largely a play for more taxpayer money!
This isn’t the first time a Minnesota Somali has run for president in Somalia, but it does beg the question—do people like St. Cloud resident Anab Dahir get to vote here and at the same time be a candidate to lead a foreign country? And, do all those Somalis who have become American citizens (and some who vote who aren’t citizens!) get to vote in Somalia and here?
Shouldn’t they have to decide to which country they have loyalty? I expect Anab Dahir has an easy time ‘campaigning’ in Minnesota, be interesting to see how she does in Somalia.
If she should win, will she go live in Somalia or govern from Minnesota?
If she goes to Somalia, doesn’t that mean that others of her countrymen should go there too? And, in that case we sure shouldn’t be admitting NEW Somali refugees to the US.
We have admitted 6,226 Somali ‘refugees’ to the US in the first 9 months of fiscal year 2015, here. Are they all going to vote here and in Somalia?
Just checked another US State Department data baseand found out that so far in FY2015, Minnesota got 846 new Somali refugees. 437 went to Minneapolis. St. Cloud ‘welcomed’ 189 more Somalis and St. Paul got 76. Small numbers went to 26 other towns and cities in Minnesota.
For new readers, the UN/US State Department sent 10,000 Somalis to Minnesota over the last ten years, here. That number does not include the over 2,000 secondary migrants that go to MN each year from other locations around the US as the Somalis build an enclave in Minnesota.
From Midnimo:
“Men have led Somalia for 25 years and they’ve never done anything,” says Anab Dahir.
Anab Dahir, a medical clinic interpreter and 42-year-old mother of six living in St. Cloud, Minnesota, came to the United States from Somalia in 1997, seeking asylum in the Chicago airport. Now an American citizen, she is active in the rapidly growing Somali community in her Midwestern state. She has become so civic-minded, in fact, that she has decided to run for office — not in the U.S., but in her birthplace. Dahir is running to become the first female president of Somalia. “Men have led Somalia for 25 years and they’ve never done anything,” she says. “Now, it’s the women’s turn.”

I think Al-shabaab, the Islamic terrorists there, will have something to say about a woman leading the country of Somalia, don’t you?
Editor: From time to time we publish opinion pieces from our readers as well as other comments worth highlighting. This is from an Idaho patriot with a point of view we have heard expressed before. Not pulling any punches here, the author is sure to infuriate some of you.
By the way, we have often asked our critics to pen an opinion piece for us about why they think the federal resettlement program is a good thing for America and they never take us up on it. Maybe some of those critics, who lurk here daily, will be inspired to respond after reading this!
(Emphasis below is mine) From Idaho Patriot:
The refugee program is not unlike ancient AMERICAN slave trade.
Caboceers from the UN tap or trap their kinsman, the majority of which are uneducated and unskilled laborers, many of which DO NOT read.“Marketed” to foreign countries as laborers, separated from friends, family, and language they are relocated by the will and decision of overseers. Immediately the “cost of their transportation” puts them in debt to the government. Statistics say that the majority do not/cannot repay that initial debt.
Is UNHCR Antonio Guterres the chief caboceer for global corporations?
Caboceers and wealthy contractors work together, not unlike the slave markets.
Money from the “New World” exchanges hands, and lives are shipped off to help feed the greed of massive industries. Refugees are told they have arrived in a “better” place, the proof of which is running water and flushing toilets. (Oh how lucky we would be to be relocated away from our problems to arrive in the land of bidets).
These people are segregated into poverty communities (Jim Crow would be proud of). Without employable skills, language, or ability to read they have no other option but to accept the housing supplied by their new handlers. Federal and State monies provide plantation type housing, similar to the cluster of shacks that indentured slaves were provided. Families who were destitute remain destitute but now they add debt, isolation, and language and cultural barriers to their troubles. Twice poor: economically, now cut off from their kinsmen.
Their own nationals often serve as handlers who are paid to organize and work their countrymen through the programs provided by state and federal tax dollars. The New World of promise turns out to be more similar to indentured slavery. Equipped with new skills they are now “qualified” for the jobs that “American’s won’t do”.
The reason Americans won’t do those jobs is NEVER QUESTIONED.
Perhaps it is because the work is grueling and the pay so meager that gas money is hardly covered. Perhaps it’s because nobody monitors the abuses against workers at these jobs, perhaps it’s because the hours are so strenuous that Americans would call and report it. Perhaps it’s because Americans aren’t “afraid” to lose jobs, or afraid of the government, or afraid to speak up about being mistreated. God forbid we ACTUALLY EXAMINE THE EMPLOYERS to see WHY Americans won’t work at these jobs. Billions are earned by these Masters but the indentured refugees are kept down and controlled as they fill the pockets of the fat cats on top. Refugees DON’T KNOW how to escape these situations; Americans do and perhaps that’s why we aren’t “doing these jobs”.
OUR happy community gets to feel wonderful about herself as she hands out poverty portions of used furniture, cheap food, and old clothing. Toss out all your unwanted items and feel good about your generosity, this is the other face of greed and can’t be anymore repulsive.
Get the warm and fuzzies by helping out at the refugee center if you wish but I dare you to walk the streets weekly and see how things really are. Many of you say you wish to “convert” these souls, but you aren’t going out to do so. Many of you say you “love multi-culturalism” but you live as far away from their dirty rundown dumps as possible.
What you really want is to feel good about yourself when you feel like doing a good deed. You want to pat yourself on the back when you give your 2nd hand charity. You want to promote yourself in the community by looking like you offer love and the hand of fellowship to people you don’t have anything to do with. Many of you love to have money from Federal and State programs that supply you with security and wealth from these tax funded programs for refugee schooling, medical care, adult education, housing, therapy, and other tax funded provisional programs. You care about YOU. If you were not receiving money you would not be receiving refugees.
Twin Falls has met her capacity to absorb refugees. At this point we are mistreating the ones who are already here by not seeing to their needs.
We are also dealing with questionable leadership who, DESPITE THE OUTCRY FROM THEIR COMMUNITY, don’t want to limit or cut off the federal money received for their part in this refugee trade. These programs are now BUILDING INDIGENT populations that are drowning Twin Falls in higher crime, garbage, and displaced souls.
This program needs to end.
Editor: My interest in the refugee program back in 2007 was initially begun because it came to citizens’ attention that refugees were being resettled in my county into the worst slum sections of our major city and reports were that they were not given necessities such as bedding and winter coats. Look around where you live and see if meek refugees are being neglected. Suggestion for reform…..
This reminds me that we have a suggestion for something that could be done very easily by Congress and that is to create a repatriation fund to help unhappy refugees (and other legal immigrants) rejoin their own people and cultures where they came from or in a another country that is within their own cultural zone. Even the introduction of such a bill in Congress would ‘smoke out’ very quickly those who really care about the refugees as people, from those who are using them for cheap labor or for their own personal selfish reasons.
