One more refugee crime case where in addition to the pain and suffering he caused, not only did we pay for his resettlement, but taxpayers will pay for his trial and incarceration for life. I think the cost of criminal trials of refugees and the cost of their time in prison should come out of the US State Department’s budget and out of the contractors’ hides. Of course it is still all your tax money, but at least it might cause the resettlement industry to be more careful about who they bring to your towns and cities.
By the way, we have 1,556 posts in our ‘crimes’ category, here. Happy reading!
Somali refugees, like these in Kenya, are looking for a chance to get to the US. 53% of Americans say we don’t have an obligation to bring them, or any “persecuted” people, here.
Truth-be-told, it would be an overwhelming majority (not 53%) if the general public had any knowledge (as you do, as readers of RRW) about how the process works and who is getting paid to ‘help’ the mostly economic migrants (not refugees!) get here. This poll and our previous postshould send a message to Republican candidates this fall!
Here is the AP story (hat tip: Judy). Emphasis is mine:
Americans are wary of granting refugee status to children crossing the U.S. border to flee strife-torn countries in Central America, and most in an Associated Press-GfK poll say the U.S. does not have a moral obligation to accept asylum seekers generally.
The new poll found 53 percent of Americans believe the United States has no moral obligation to offer asylum to people who escape violence or political persecution, while 44 percent believe it has that responsibility.
And more than half, 52 percent, say children who say they are fleeing gang violence in Central America should not be treated as refugees, while 46 percent say they should.
The responses expose a partisan rift, with 70 percent of Republicans saying Central American children should not be treated as refugeescompared with 62 percent of Democrats who believe they should. On whether the United States has an obligation to accept people fleeing violence or political persecution, 66 percent of Republicans say it does not and 57 percent of Democrats say it does. [Republican primary candidates challenging the establishment, take note!—ed]
So that would mean that a whopping 43% of Democrats also believe we have no obligation even in the case of political persecution—wow!
AP goes on to define the word “refugee:”
To qualify for asylum, applicants must prove they suffered persecution or have a well-founded fear of persecution on grounds of race, religion, nationality, membership in a social group or political opinion. A refugee must demonstrate the same but, unlike an asylum seeker, seeks protection while still outside the United States.
Note there is not one word in that largely correct definition that says anything about “fleeing violence.”
About the photo: Just so you know, we have resettled 6,080 Somalis to the US this fiscal year and 2,414 came here through Kenya supposedly fleeing violence. If Obama keeps this up, he will soon catch up to George W. Bush in the number of Somalis brought to your home towns!
For a little levity, because we need it sometimes…..
From the Berkshire Eagle (hat tip: ‘pungentpeppers’). I’m imaging the reporter writing this with a straight face:
PITTSFIELD — A Pittsfield man was found guilty of a felony for nearly biting off part of his roommate’s thumb last winter during an altercation over bathroom etiquette.
RRW Geography Lesson—Bush boy from Ghana goes wild!
Michael Mensah, 57, was convicted on Thursday of assault and battery causing serious bodily injury. He was acquitted of a felony charge of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
It took a jury of three men and three women less than an hour to reach a verdict.
On the afternoon of Feb. 11, Pittsfield Police responded to a Summer Street residence for a report of a domestic incident and were greeted at the door by a naked man with part of his thumb hanging by a tendon. Mensah, his roommate, was found in his room lying on his bed complaining of pain to his back, neck and head. His shirt was covered in blood and the bathroom “clearly showed signs of a bloody fight.”
Both men were taken to Berkshire Medical Center for their injuries.
On Thursday in the Jury of Six session in Central Berkshire District Court, Stephen Quam, 61, testified that part of his right thumb had to be removed.
He said doctors told him because it had been bitten off there was no way to reattach it.
He showed the jury his thumb, which appeared to be missing the first phalanx, including the nail.
In court both men had very different versions of what took place that day, although they agree that the argument was about the use of the bathroom.
According to Quam, who is also from Ghana, he went in to shave his head with a pair of clippers while Mensah was using the toilet. Mensah also is a Ghanian national. [Not US citizens, yet you lucky Mass. taxpayers paid for this trial replete with costly interpreters!—ed]
He said he made a comment to his roommate about not telling him he was going to defecate.
“The room began to smell,” he said through an interpreter.
This enraged Mensah who attacked him, pushing him into the bathtub, choking and punching him before biting his thumb, which had ended up in Mensah’s mouth.
“Part of my thumb came off,” he testified.
During the attack Quam was injured when the clippers he was using landed on his foot, he said.
Quam testified that he never struck his roommate that day.
Mensah told the jury he was using the toilet when Quam came in uninvited and began to shave his head. He said he had to “poop” and did so. Quam then came up to him, began thumping him on the head with his fingers and called him a “bush boy.”
The interpreter explained this was a very derogatory phrase in Ghana.
Migration Policy Institute. 17% of those brains leaving Ghana were in the US by 2001.
When Mensah was finished using the bathroom he tried to leave the room, but was pushed by Quam and fell into the bathtub. He said Quam choked him with one hand and punched him with the other. He eventually bit Quam’s thumb to get him to stop beating him, he said.
So what I wanted to know is, where did all these Ghanians come from? Or more specifically how did they get here?
I learned that “welcoming” Massachusetts is loaded with them.
This is how I found out all about the migration history of ‘bush boys’ (really, more than I wanted to know) hereat the Migration Policy Institute. Can you believe it! Ghana is worried about a BRAIN DRAIN!
The Ghanaian population in the United States has grown rapidly over the last decade and a half, particularly between 1990 and 2000, when the population jumped from 20,889 to 65,570, or 210 percent. Family reunification, refugee resettlement, and the strong economy of the 1990s are the factors driving this increase. Many believe these figures to be undercounts, and nonofficial estimates reach as high as 300,000.
Of course that means there are a whole bunch of illegals here besides the “refugees” (just waiting for the Obama amnesty!).
I was surprised to see this story. I thought all of the cases of Islamic terror fundraising for al-Shabaab by Somalis we brought to America through refugee resettlement (at your expense) had gone to trial and those convicted were safely tucked away in prison (at your expense). Oh, and adding insult to injury, it is surely your welfare dollars they are sending to Africa.
Surprise! Here is yet another case! One of the women is from Seattle, Washington and the other from Reston, Virginia. The story I first saw is this onefrom the Seattle Times via AP (thus the focus on Seattle’s alleged terrorist).
Dhirane appeared in District Court in Seattle on Tuesday. http://www.kirotv.com/news/news/kent-woman-suspected-funding-terrorist-group/ngmYG/
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A Washington state woman and four other people have been charged with funneling money to the al-Qaida-linkedextremist group al-Shabab in Somalia.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Alexandria announced the charges Wednesday. The two women, one from Kent, Wash., and the other from Reston, Va., are charged with providing material support to a foreign terrorist network. The U.S. designated al-Shabab as a terrorist group in 2008.
Prosecutors say 44-year-old HindaOsman Dhiraneof Kent and 34-year-old Muna Osman Jamaof Reston were arrested in their homes. Dhirane faces an initial appearance Wednesday at the federal courthouse in Seattle.
Three others overseas have also been charged. One is in custody in the Netherlands; the other two are fugitives in Kenya and Somalia.
Prosecutors say the women raised money for al-Shababusing code words like “orphans” to refer to al-Shabab fighters.
According to the Department of Justice, Dhiraneand JamaJamaare leaders of an al-Shabaabfundraising conspiracy operating in the U.S., Kenya, the Netherlands, Somalia and elsewhere. Jamawas allegedly responsible for sending money to Kenya through overseas defendant FardowsaJamaMohamed, while Dhiranewas primarily responsible for sending money to Somalia through another overseas defendant, BariraHassan Abdullahi, according to the charges.
The Seattle area boasts the second-largest Somali population in the U.S., behind Minneapolis-St. Paul. Over the years, the FBI and federal prosecutors have attempted to make in-roads into the community. [I don’t think “boasts” is the right word here, do you?—ed]
Editor: LOL! This is one way to deal with my growing backlog!
“No expense spared” as Saudi Arabia builds the world’s best security fence. The UN and its “humanitarian” lapdogs are silent. http://www.homelandsecurityresearch.com/2008/06/saudi-arabia-border-fence-market-largest-in-the-world/
~UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Socialist Antonio Gutteres opines that European financial support for Syrian refugees is no longer enough and that more countries (besides Germany and Sweden) need to open their arms to mostly Muslim ‘refugees’ and invite them in.
~They are breaking into Spain through Morocco, but Spain is not a welcoming place say Syrian refugees who want to move on to Germany, Sweden or France.
~Bulgarian “anti-refugee” border fenceticks-off the international humanitarian industrial complex. But they say nothing that I know of about the best border fences in the world protecting Saudi Arabia! We have reported on several occasions that S.A. rounds up, and deports, all those would-be asylum seekers who do manage to get into the “Kingdom.”
~Turkey attempts to clear Istanbul of Syrian beggars living on the streets. Turkey, a Muslim country, has been “welcoming” but the citizens there are losing patience now.
Notice a common thread. Truth-be-told, Europe isn’t so welcoming to ‘asylum seekers’ because the illegal aliens trying to break in are almost all Muslims. Not even Saudi Arabia wants them.
If Saudi Arabia can build a 1,600-mile-long fence, why can’t we? Just asking!
