Senate Homeland Security Committee worries about Canada's Syrian refugee flood

The plan by new Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau foresees 25,000 Syrian refugees to arrive in Canada by the end of the month. US Senators worry that they cannot be thoroughly vetted and ask that since we share an over 5,000 mile border could the massive influx pose security threats for us?
The Committee will hold a hearing this morning at 10 a.m. (see here).
Here is the news at Channel News Asia:

WASHINGTON/OTTAWA: Canada is proceeding with plans to take in 25,000 Syrian refugees, but the country’s background-vetting programme is under scrutiny by a U.S. congressional panel, with a hearing set for Wednesday, amid lawmaker concerns about U.S. security.

Pals! Canada’s Immigration minister pretty much says, who cares what the US Senate does, we have already run it past Obama and he is fine with it! Photo: The boys will meet again in Washington in March. http://www.am980.ca/2015/12/29/justin-trudeau-to-visit-barack-obama-march-10th/

The Senate Homeland Security Committee has questions about the Ottawa government’s intake of refugees by the end of February and the possibility that violent militants could mix in and cross the long, largely porous U.S.-Canada border.

At the public hearing, senators will question U.S. and Canadian experts and a U.S. Border Patrol officer on Canada’s “fast track” resettlement programme. Canada’s government turned down an invitation to send a spokesperson to the session.

“We have been in frequent touch with members of the U.S. administration who are satisfied with what we are doing … if the U.S. Senate wants to engage in these activities, that is their right, of course,” John McCallum, Canada’s immigration minister, told reporters on Tuesday.

Initial inquiries show Canada’s background checks on refugees are less rigorous than the 18- to 24-month vettings done by U.S. authorities before letting any Syrian refugee set foot on American soil, congressional aides said.

Canada’s new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has already delayed his government’s program. It had targeted resettlement of the 25,000 by the end of 2015.  Now the target is February.

By the way, Canada’s plan could affect states like Montana that share long borders with our neighbor to the north.

Now Toronto wants a pause in Syrian refugee flow to city!

You can’t make this up!  Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (the boy who loves Muslims!) first promised 25,000 Syrians would be resettled in Canada before the close of 2015, now the goal is by the end of February of this year, but they forgot to see if they had enough housing!

We reported on Ottawa yesterday, now here comes Toronto as government frantically searches for more ‘welcoming’ cities who need more Muslim immigrants!
Hitting the “pause” button!
From the Toronto Sun:

TORONTO – The federal government is briefly hitting the pause button on Syrian resettlement efforts in Toronto and looking for other cities to take in refugees.

Immigration Minister John McCallum revealed Wednesday that resettlement groups in Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver and Halifax have asked for a temporary stop in the flow of government-sponsored refugees. But McCallum also told reporters he believes Canada is still on track to bring in 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of February.

The pause means refugees will now remain in hotels for a few extra days after their flights land in Canada.

“The flow from the airplanes is not slowing down at all,” McCallum said during a speech in Toronto. ”It’s just certain towns or cities need a pause. There will be other places in Canada who will receive the refugees.”

Canadians in other cities beware!

The feds are actively seeking more cities to take in government-assisted Syrian refugees.

Ottawa: Not enough low income housing for number of Syrians arriving in the capital

Oopsy!  New Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s big promises hit another road block.

Trudeau home
Maybe Justin could make room for a few hundred at his new home!

There are 10,000 poor Canadians on a waiting list to get housing in Ottawa so now 450 Syrians are on hold living in temporary housing as Catholics and others scramble to find homes for families that are much larger than originally anticipated.
From CBC News:

An agency struggling to cope with the surge of government-sponsored Syrian refugees arriving in Ottawa has asked for — and received — a pause to let them find suitable housing for families already here.

The Catholic Centre for Immigrants, the agency overseeing the arrival of government-sponsored Syrian refugees in Ottawa, reported that all 450 temporary housing spots were full, since many of the families have not yet been able to secure permanent housing. [Why aren’t the Catholics concerned with Canadian poor people?—ed]

[….]

Ottawa expects to welcome about 1,200 Syrians by the end of February. So far, about 500 have arrived.

So which impoverished and disabled Canadians will they bump from the waiting list?

Also complicating resettlement efforts is the city’s centralized waiting list for affordable housing, which stands at 10,000 requests with an estimated wait of five years.

The shortage of affordable housing is one of the main impediments for the refugee contractors here in the US, in Canada and around the world. So make sure that the feds don’t arrive in your town passing out the big bucks to local governments to build more housing.

The housing will be immigrants not your own poor people!

***Update*** Yikes! No sooner had I posted this and I see Vancouver doesn’t have enough housing either! See here.
And, more turmoil and confusion in Canada over who pays the airfare for the Syrians. What a mess!

Fascinating: Only 3 in 10 Syrian families even want to be resettled in the West

The new Canadian prime minister, boy Trudeau, had campaigned on the promise to bring in 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by December 31, 2015.  They fell short by about 19,000!   Here is one important reason why (you won’t see this mentioned by the NO borders agitators in the US resettlement industry!).

Trudeau promises
Promises, promises! The do-gooder (paternalistic!) Liberals run into a bit of a problem. 70% of Syrian refugees don’t want to go to Canada.

They want to stay in the Middle East!  Can you believe it!  They like their culture and they hope to go home!
From the Globe and Mail:

Omayma al-Kasem is bold, forthright and speaks clearly and with confidence. She has completed four years of law school and volunteers as a mental-health worker with a Jordanian charity, and as such, is exactly the kind of Syrian refugee Canada wants to welcome. The trouble is, Ms. al-Kasem isn’t interested in coming.

The 26-year-old from Daraa, Syria, is one of a sizable number of Syrians turning down the chance to become permanent residents of Canada. According to UN figures, just three out of every 10 households contacted about resettlement in Canada go on to relocate.

“Some families are still hoping to return home, others are concerned about their ability to integrate into another country – including learn the language,” said Aoife McDonnell, an external relations officer at the UNHCR refugee agency in Jordan.

More here….
One of the unspoken truths that the resettlement industry is loathe to admit is that many refugees who do reach the West are unhappy and want to go home, but they are trapped in a land where they have discovered (to their great disappointment) that no streets are paved with gold.

Canada now says it will "welcome" 50,000 Syrians by the end of 2016

They have been all over the place with their numbers especially since they realized they couldn’t get 25,000 relocated to Canadian towns by the end of December (less than 4 weeks from now).

McCallum
The boy wonder’s immigration chief is a former banker, John McCallum: 35,000-50,000 Syrians by the end of 2016. https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/john-mccallum-canadas-new-minister-immigration-harvey-pakistan

So to make it look like Trudeau’s campaign promise isn’t a bust already they are now throwing around the number 50,000 over the next twelve months. (To get to that number they need to be bringing in around 1,000 a week! Good luck with that security screening!)
And, we better be beefing-up our northern border! (Maybe Donald should start adding that border to his campaign speeches!)

Among our top posts for the last couple of weeks is this one about Canadian military men being thrown out of barracks to make room for Syrians.
Now here is the mention of 50,000! (the first 300 arrived a few days ago). From The Desert Sun:

As Canada prepares to welcome the first of 25,000 Syrian refugees, the government suggests that number could double over the next year.

“The number of refugees is likely to be in the order of 35,000 to 50,000” by the end of next year, Immigration Minister John McCallum said.

The first “mass flight” of up to 300 refugees from Turkey and Jordan is expected to arrive by chartered aircraft*** on Thursday.

The new Liberal government made a commitment to resettle 25,000 refugees, along with those privately sponsored by churches and families, by the end of February.

Those coming to Canada are undergoing security, immigration and health checks.

The article goes on to tell us that most of the Syrians will come from UN camps, thus they will be nearly 100% Sunni Muslims just as are those entering the US now.
***There have been rumors of chartered flights bringing large numbers of refugees to the US.  Surely someone has a photo if this has occurred!
