Rome: Protesters take to the streets claiming refugees are bringing crime to their neighborhood

Sorry to focus so heavily today on ‘Invasion of Europe’ news, but that seems to be where the action is.

Matteo Salvini a political “rising star” in Italy. http://news.yahoo.com/salvini-seeks-fill-berlusconi-boots-italys-063140476.html

From the Independent:  (Be sure to see the photo which I can’t import—these women don’t look so nasty to me!  Their sign says: ‘enough uncivilised immigration’)

Racial tensions have exploded in Rome’s suburbs after locals chanting pro-Mussolini slogans attacked an immigrant holding centre. Police responded with baton charges and tear gas.

Locals are calling for the building in the Tor Sapienza district to be closed after blaming the migrants it houses for “insupportable” levels of street crime in the area.

But the nastier side of the protests were apparent on Tuesday night with hundreds of people chanting: “The blacks have to go,” and dozens more shouting: “Long live Il Duce (Mussolini)”.

The violence in Tor Sapienza began simmering on Monday night with hooded men throwing stones at the Sorriso reception centre in Viale Giorgio Morandi. On Tuesday night the situation escalated dramatically. At around 10pm around 50 people, at the head of a 250-strong crowd, attacked the centre with rocks and petrol bombs. At least 14 people, including four policemen, were injured in the clashes that saw cars and rubbish bins set alight and used as barricades. Some residents claimed the police over-reacted. “They charged us suddenly, for no reason, while were standing still on the pavement. We wanted protection from the forces of law and order, but instead they attacked us,” one local, Eliana, told Ansa news agency.

The 36 African and Bengali refugees inside pleaded with police to be led away to safety, according to Corriere Della Sera newspaper. A few hours earlier one of the refugees was attacked in the street.

The ugly developments are the latest sign of a wave of anti-immigration sentiment sweeping Italy, with populist political leaders appearing to profit from, even encourage it. Matteo Salvini, head of the xenophobic Northern League, has seen his ratings rise after appearing in a T-shirt bearing the phrase: “Stop Invasion”.

But, now hold on, go to the last paragraph and we learn that the refugees aren’t pure as the driven snow…..

The violence at Tor Sapienza is the latest in a series of racially-motivated confrontations in the capital in the past few months. In September there were several clashes between refugees and locals in the Corcolle district. Around 40 migrants attacked two buses with stones and threatened a female driver, after claiming they were not allowed on public transport. Locals responded by launching vigilante patrols.

I wonder what level the migrant population must reach before violence comes to the streets.

LOL! Remember that story we had from Italy in August—Refugees protest against boring Italian food!  It is tough being a refugee in Italy these days.

Bloomberg writer posits that more ingredients in a recipe makes for a better stew and so does more immigration to America

Huh?

This is just a ridiculous analogy and would not be worth even a mention if it weren’t for the huge number of commenters (with entertaining things to say) blasting the author’s conclusions and demonstrating the good sense of Americans generally.

Noah Smith http://www.bloombergview.com/contributors/noah-smith

Here is Noah Smith’s opening paragraph of Best Immigration Policy Is More Immigration (hat tip: Paul):

In my family, we have a cooking technique that is especially useful for making stews and other mixed-ingredient dishes. If there is ever doubt as to whether or not to add more of an ingredient — onions, olive oil, Cholula sauce — we err on the side of adding more. This approach has long been my default attitude toward immigration — more is better.

There is a bunch of mumbo-jumbo about assimilation and whether well-educated immigrants assimilate better than the uneducated.  The author does say that maybe we shouldn’t have so many uneducated ones.  And concludes with this:

So it would seem to be a good idea for us to tilt our immigration policy toward more skills-based immigration. When it comes to the “More!” cooking technique, high-skilled immigrants are the ingredient that goes well with any dish.

Brilliant, isn’t it!

Bloomberg commenters were having none of it.  As of this writing, there are 500 of them.  Some are hilarious!

Here is the latest one (an hour ago as I post this):

Jim:  It’s unbelievable how many idiots there are in the world, and how many of those idiots are in the media profession.

Somalis cook too!

And, LOL!, here is one involving another cooking technique!  Somali refugees in America like cooking too—roast lamb in this case!

Susan Betts (responding to Dave Kelly):

Having been someone that worked with the influx of Somali folks that came in this country in the 90’s these idealistic people have no idea in so far as practical application what they are talking about. Most are very very unskilled, don’t speak English well enough, don’t understand the basics requirements of what a land lord will require of them and don’t care. I had one land lord end his participation in the county program for housing because these people built fires to roast lambs in the middle of the living room and would not stop. It damaged his property so badly that he ended up suing the county. They ignore occupancy laws and many many other things that would take forever to itemize. I think you get my drift. There assimilation was all federal, state and county funded once those dollars were gone it has been a real mess. I am speaking for Ohio and Minnesota.

In advance of Obama’s visit to Burma, the NYT does the Rohingya as victims story

Burma, one of the only countries in the world with the guts to stand up to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. Monks protest in 2013: http://www.demotix.com/news/3243077/buddhist-monks-protest-against-oic/all-media

I would have to write a book to tell you why this story is so infuriating to me.  I don’t have time for books!  But, I have followed the Burma (Myanmar) Rohingya Muslim issue for years (174 previous posts in our Rohingya category) and it makes me want to explode when I see the one-sided portrayal of the issue by the mainstream (leftwing, pro-Islamist media).

By the way, my initial interest in the Rohingya story was that our refugee resettlement contractors are pushing for the US to take more Rohingya refugees (USCCB here), and in fact have already resettled some in America.  Esar Met, convicted of killing a Burmese Christian girl earlier this year in Utah, was almost certainly a Rohingya.

Oh, how times have changed.  Here is Time magazine on the Rohingya in 2002 (see our 2009 post here to see how Time got with the Rohingya as ‘victims’ meme by 2009).  In 2002:

Today, southern Bangladesh has become a haven for hundreds of jihadis on the lam. They find natural allies in Muslim guerrillas from India hiding out across the border, and in Muslim Rohingyas.

Interestingly, the US State Department removed its link where Rohingya had been previously linked to Islamic terror groups.

I don’t see one single word in the New York Times article from last Thursday about what started the latest round of violence between the Buddhist majority and the Muslim Rohingya minority—the rape and murder in 2012 of a Burmese girl by a gang of Muslim men. Not a word about outside Islamic agitators (Muslim “pilgrams”) working among the Rohingya population, and definitely not one word about the Organization of Islamic Cooperation attempting to get an Islamic/sharia foothold in Burma.

Remember everywhere is fair game for the creation of a Sharia state.

Here is the New York Times carrying water for the lecturing Obama again and the Islamist agenda:

SITTWE, Myanmar — The Myanmar government has given the estimated one million Rohingya people in this coastal region of the country a dispiriting choice: Prove your family has lived here for more than 60 years and qualify for second-class citizenship, or be placed in camps and face deportation.

The policy, accompanied by a wave of decrees and legislation, has made life for the Rohingya, a long-persecuted Muslim minority, ever more desperate, spurring the biggest flow of Rohingya refugees since a major exodus two years ago.

In the last three weeks alone, 14,500 Rohingya have sailed from the beaches of Rakhine State to Thailand, with the ultimate goal of reaching Malaysia, according to the Arakan Project, a group that monitors Rohingya refugees.

The crisis has become an embarrassment to the White House ahead of a scheduled visit by President Obama to Myanmar next week. [Obama off to Asia here—ed] The administration considers Myanmar a foreign-policy success story in Asia but is worried that renewed conflict between Buddhist extremists, who are given a free hand by the government, and the Rohingya could derail the already rocky transition from military rule to democratic reform.

Mr. Obama called President Thein Sein of Myanmar last week, urging him to address the “tensions and humanitarian situation in Rakhine State,” the White House said.

In his most public appeal to the government yet, Mr. Obama asked the Myanmar leader to revise the anti-Rohingya policies, specifically the resettlement plan. Myanmar must “support the civil and political rights of the Rohingya population,” he said.

The Rohingya have faced discrimination for decades. They have been denied citizenship and evicted from their homes, their land has been confiscated, and they have been attacked by the military. After one such attack in 1978, some 200,000 fled to Bangladesh.

Many paragraphs of blah, blah, blah and this:

The latest flare-up began with an outbreak of sectarian rioting in 2012, in which hundreds of Rohingya were killed and dozens of their villages burned to the ground by radical Buddhists. Since then, close to 100,000 have fled the country, and more than 100,000 have been confined to squalid camps, forbidden to leave.

No discussion of how the latest flare-up started!  Or, how the Rohingya set Buddhist villages on fire and killed innocents.  Typical biased and disgusting coverage!

See our Rohingya Reports category.  And, you could write a book!

Lewiston, Maine mayor: More public housing would attract more welfare recipients

Mayor McDonald is continually under fire from Leftists and Somali agitators. Here is one such case in 2012: http://www.pressherald.com/2012/10/02/lewiston-mayor-asked-to-resign-after-comments/

Although the “S” word is not mentioned, it does seem that the mayor ( Mayor Robert Macdonald) had Somalis on his mind when he talked with WMTW.TV (hat tip: ‘pungentpeppers’):

Voters in Lewiston have repealed an agreement that would have given some pieces of city land to a landlord whose properties were destroyed in a 2013 arson. Affordable housing would have been built at the site. Mayor Robert Macdonald said the city has enough housing and more than 40 vacant buildings have been torn down so far.

[….]

He is concerned about building more housing that can attract people from other areas and take advantage of public services. When we bring these people in here, they perpetuate the—the myth that Lewiston is nothing but a welfare place.

By the way, I assume the arson fire discussed is this one which did involve a Somali boy.  More here.

How did all those Somalis (thousands of them) end up in Lewiston?  See our post from 2009 on Maine and the welfare magnet, here.

You also might want to have a look at our extensive archive on Lewiston by clicking here.

And, one more thing, Maine’s Governor Paul LePage, who has been trying for years to get rid of Maine’s reputation for welfare generosity to migrants and asylum seekers, was re-elected last week (the Left is not happy).  See our Maine archive here.

Sec. of Homeland Security visits Somali “community” in Minneapolis, hears complaints

Says he wants help in identifying immigrants with bad intentions.  (Well, he didn’t exactly say that.)

In response, Somalis welcome federal help in keeping their youths from wanting to join the jihad, say they need more taxpayer funded stuff to keep them here.  (Well, not exactly in those words.)

Jeh Johnson with Somalis in Minneapolis. Somalis don’t want any airport profiling as they travel in and out of the US. http://www.kare11.com/story/news/local/2014/11/07/homeland-security-chief-johnson-somalis-luger-bihi-dube/18670865/

It seems pretty simple to me, don’t profile at airports as they leave the country, just let them leave and then strip them of their passports!

From Fox9 Minneapolis (emphasis is mine):

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) –

Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson was in the heart of Minnesota’s Somali community Friday to listen and let local leaders know they aren’t alone. He encouraged grassroots efforts to build safe, strong and proud neighborhoods, telling the Muslim community this is your America too.

“I want to encourage people to be participants in our public safety, in our homeland security.” Johnson said. “This is your country too.”

Johnson talked about several hot button issues, insisting he is focused on community engagement.

“Muslims are always being targeted because they happen to be Muslims,” Abdirahman Mukhtar, with Pillsbury United Communities said.

The secretary’s agenda includes racial profiling and the extremist recruitment of young Muslims to fight in wars overseas.

“This is an exercise in trust,” Johnson said.

The secretary explained that efforts to block the pipeline that is sending potential fighters from the Twin Cities to far off places like Somalia and Syria starts on the ground in neighborhoods like Minneapolis’ cedar-riverside.

The message from the White House is the federal government needs help.

“If you see somebody who may be headed in the direction of violence, someone disaffected, angry in some way, help us to help you in the community,” Johnson said. “I don’t consider that snitching.”

“We are very happy that we are getting the right attention,” Abdirizak Bihi, a Somali community leader said.

Somali community leaders welcomed the cabinet level visit that included meetings and roundtable discussions with law enforcement and other stakeholders.  [‘Stakeholders’ never include those critical of the government—ed]

The hope is that Washington gets the message that there are problems on the ground here that need addressing to keep young immigrants from becoming disillusioned and influenced by terrorist organizations.

They need more job training, education, and nice places to live (and for you to pay for it!).

“There’s no employment opportunities, no job training, college readiness, the achievement gap,” Amano Dube with Pillsbury United Communities said. “They don’t have an appropriate place to live.”

And, LOL! don’t you dare profile them at airports as they try to get to Somalia or to the Middle East to join ISIS!  It continues to be a great mystery to me why so many “persecuted” Somalis are always flying back and forth to Somalia and East Africa.  How persecuted could they be?

BTW, more Somalis are arriving in Minneapolis every day thanks to the US State Department and its contractors.
