Somalis still arriving in Greeley, looking for work

There was a little noontime luncheon meeting in Greeley, CO a few days ago to tell citizens of Greeley what the state of the refugee resettlement program is in that city in the wake of recent firings of Somali refugees at the Swift meatpacking plant.  Only 25 people came to listen.   I am amazed at the low number and can only guess it was not widely publicized.

Here are some of the bits of information the attendees received:

Somali refugees are still arriving in Greeley although jobs are scarce.

Somali refugees continue to flow into Greeley, but the rate has slowed in recent months, a refugee caseworker told an audience Wednesday at Aims Community College.

……

While Somali and other east African refugees were arriving at a rate of 15 to 20 a week earlier this year — most taking jobs on the second shift at JBS Swift & Co. — arrivals have dropped to about eight to 10 a week, said Ibraham Mohamed, the caseworker [employed by Lutheran Family Services].

……

The decline comes in the wake of about 120 Muslim workers, mostly Somali, being fired at JBS Swift in September. The firings came after workers claimed that the company reneged on a compromise to allow them a short break around sunset to accommodate prayers during the holy month of Ramadan. JBS Swift officials said they tried to accommodate the workers’ religious practices, and that the firings were the result of an unauthorized work stoppage that involved about 300 Muslim workers walking off the job.

About half the fired workers remain in Greeley looking for other jobs that don’t require strong English skills.

A large number of Somalis have moved on to ‘welcoming’ Ft. Morgan:

James Horan, division director of Denver-based Lutheran Family Services Refugee and Asylee Programs and the featured speaker at Aims, said about 500 Somali refugees are in Greeley, up about 100 from earlier in the year. Meanwhile, about 300 have moved to Fort Morgan, home to a Cargill meatpacking plant.

Horan says the Muslim community could get larger, implying it is totally out of your (citizens of Greeley) control:

The recent labor dispute at JBS Swift aside, most refugees like what they’ve found in Greeley, according to Horan. He said there’s no way to predict how large the refugee population in Greeley will become.

Then Horan presents the arrival of refugees as a fait accompli.  Although it is the first time you might be noticing it (refugee arrivals).  No sense fighting it, it is happening everywhere!  As if settlement of third world refugees in small towns and cities in America is like an unpredictable new virus and all you can do is take some tylenol and get used to it.

“What you’re experiencing in Greeley is not entirely unique,” he said. “It’s probably unique to you and your community, but it’s a trend that’s happening to a lot of small- and medium-sized communities in the country.”

They want you to think this, but know, citizens of Greeley, you can speak up.   Other citizens in other cities have told the US State Department and the volags (and the meatpackers) to buzz-off and find some other place to resettle refugees.

My usual reforms-needed rant:   Every resettlement city chosen by the volags and the State Department should have an opportunity to learn all the facts about refugee resettlement in ADVANCE of refugees being resettled.  Then citizens must be given an opportunity to express their opinions and decide if they want refugees or not and HOW MANY!

Welcoming Ft. Morgan, CO doesn’t have enough jobs for refugees

Refugees who don’t speak English or have at least a GED are not going to find much work in Ft. Morgan.  Only Cargill or Swift (meatpackers) have jobs for unskilled, non-English speaking Somalis.  (Hat tip Bluelitespecial).   From the Ft. Morgan Times:

East Africans who do not work for Cargill Meat Solutions or Swift Co. have a hard time finding jobs.

Employers need workers who can speak English and often also require employees to have completed high school or have a GED equivalent. A driver’s license is also very helpful, said John Torrez, an employment counselor and bilingual specialist for the Fort Morgan Workforce Center.

In light of the fact that the Somalis who walked off the job in Grand Island, NE are suing Swift for discrimination, I wouldn’t think Swift management would be in a hurry to hire more Somalis.

So who is going to help them find work?   Maybe a taxpayer funded workforce training center.

One Somali man noted that many of his fellow refugees do not speak English and did not have formal education during their time in refugee camps. That makes it hard to find a job. He wanted to know how the workforce center, or any other agency, can help them, perhaps with training.

Remember “Refugees take root” and bring the wonders of diversity.   Ft. Morgan has signalled that it is ‘come one-come all’ so I guess they will figure it out.

Somalis will sue Swift and the Mayor is next, or so they threaten!

This is an update of our now extensive coverage (54 posts in this category) of the Somali meatpacking conflicts in Greeley, CO and Grand Island, NE.   (Hat tip:  Janet)   CAIR agitators are in Grand Island collecting stories from fired workers in preparation for their upcoming discrimination suit against the meatpacker.  From KHAS-TV:

Members of a Muslim advocacy group [CAIR] said they will be filing discrimination claims against the JBS Swift Meat Packing Plant in Grand Island. It all stems from a prayer dispute between Somali Muslim workers and the company last month.

Chicago based [Chicago seems to be the epicenter of all things bad] representatives from the Muslim Advocacy Group were in Grand Island Tuesday and earlier Wednesday morning.

The group met with Somali residents to address the prayer dispute that left many Muslim workers jobless after they walked off the job repeatedly in protest.

Representatives from the American–Islamic Relations said they plan to file more than 20 discrimination claims against the company.

One of those discrimination claimants had this to say:

“Every person who came from Africa, we came here to find a better life. We could not find that better life and it is very stressful life,” said Ismail.

Really Ismail, more stressful than life in that hell-hole Somalia?   You know what we say!

These malcontents are trained well aren’t they?  Watch the film that comes along with this article because this charming Ismail goes on to call the Mayor of Grand Island a terrorist when all she implied is that after 9/11 all the Somali refugees in town made her a little nervous.

Abraham [the agitator] said they are also disappointed in Mayor Margret Hornady’s remarks in the New York Times. Hornady said that after the 9–11 attacks the headdress many Somali women wear quote “gives some of us a Turn.”

“To condone bigotry the way that she did through her comments we think is just so ignorant we think she should rescind her comments, issue an apology and reach out to the Somali community to try to create understanding,” Abraham said.

But even an apology will not cut it for Guled and the Somali community.
Ismail said they plan to take action against the mayor as well.

Really Ismail (the bully), on what grounds will you sue?  Or, what other “action” do you have in mind?

When I first told you about this story, about the attacks on the Mayor, I gave you her e-mail address to send a note of support.  If you haven’t done that, here it is again:  MayorHornady@grand-island.com

You know what we all should do, get some of that community organizing literature so we can better identify the tactics used to destabilize communities!

Outrage! Somalis try to silence mayor of Grand Island, NE…

…and, if they succeed, you will be next!

Boy does this make my blood boil!    Do you remember last Wednesday that the New York Times actually published a front page story about the multicultural tension in Grand Island, NE in the wake of Muslim prayer demands and the subsequent firing of Somalis at the Swift meatpacking plant there?

The mayor of Grand Island expressed to the Times that the presence of so many Somalis in town made her and others uncomfortable.   Well that is the truth, and it is happening in every town in America where large numbers of Somalis have arrived.

Does it surprise anyone to hear now that Somali COMMUNITY ORGANIZER Mohamed Rage (we’ve heard from him before) says, “She is not fit to be mayor.”

Actually I am not surprised, but outraged by this overt ploy.  This isn’t just because he is angry with this mayor, this is to send a message to any mayor or elected official anywhere in America that you better not speak the truth!

GRAND ISLAND —

An Omaha Somali leader is asking Mayor Margaret Hornady to recant comments she made in a national publication that he says are discriminatory.

In a story that appeared Thursday in The New York Times, Hornady suggested she had difficulty adjusting to the sight of local Somali women in Muslim headdresses.

Hornady said that after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, it “gives some of us a turn.”

Seeing the Somali’s traditional dress reminds her of Osama bin Laden and the attacks on the U.S., she said, adding that she knows it sounds prejudiced and that she’s “working very hard on it.”

Mohamed Rage, who leads the Omaha Somali-American Community Organization, condemned the comments Friday and said he is trying to reach the mayor to address his concerns.

Rage said such comments are inappropriate for a leader, and the city’s Somali community has reacted with shock.

“She’s not fit to be a mayor,” he said.

Please send an e-mail to the mayor MayorHornady@grand-island.com and give her support!   You might also want to comment at the Grand Island Independent story.

Update October 21:  Blulitespecial sent this news story as a follow-up.  It was mostly a rehash of the story, but the thing that interested me was this:

Zapata (VP of Muliticultural Coalition) doesn’t think the mayor’s comments will set the Mulitcultural Coalition’s progress in the community back at all. But last month’s disagreement at Swift doesn’t help things. Muslims at the African grocery store said about 20 Somalis moved to Lexington to work for Tyson, some stayed in G.I. and are living off of unemployment, and others are working on a lawsuit against JBS Swift.

Do you think some of those 20 arrived in Grand Island with a mission?
