Gates of Vienna: The Rhine is freezing…

Last night I was discussing my post about Malta and about the invasion of Italian islands by hundreds, thousands, of immigrants flooding out of North Africa with my friend Richard at Blue Ridge Forum.  I wondered aloud if the Romans knew the empire was falling before it finally did.   Did they see it coming?

I see, thanks to Richard, that others are thinking the same horrible thoughts—two days ago from Baron Bodissey at Gates of Vienna:

The fall of the Roman Empire was not a sudden event.

The imperial power wielded by Rome decreased gradually over the course of centuries, during which time a steady deterioration was punctuated by repeated barbarian incursions and the sacking of cities. The reach of the empire shrank by fits and starts until it was overthrown entirely and replaced by kingdoms ruled by the Germanic invaders.

In his address to the Magna Carta Foundation in Rome on Friday night, Geert Wilders referred to a significant event during the course of the fall of Rome: the freezing of the Rhine on December 31st, 406. This allowed thousands of Germanic invaders to cross the frozen river and overrun Gaul, after which they were well-positioned to invade the Italian peninsula and sack Rome itself just a few years later.

Mr. Wilders finds a parallel to these events in the current decline of Western Civilization. He notes that modern-day barbarians — immigrants from the Islamic world — are anticipating the equivalent of the freezing of the Rhine, after which they will be able to overrun and sack the copious riches of an all-but-moribund Europe.

[….]

This has been the winter of Arab discontent, and as a result of the recent upheavals in North Africa and the Middle East, the metaphorical Rhine may finally have frozen over. Instead of a river, the barbarian invaders are crossing the Mediterranean Sea. Instead of walking, they are cramming themselves into rickety boats and crossing over into Italian territory.

Please read Baron’s whole treatise, and then this from the concluding paragraphs:

The Rhine is beginning to freeze.

The PC-MC impulse is widespread and deeply embedded in Europe. It will take catastrophic circumstances to dislodge it, but a great slow-motion catastrophe is even now unfolding.

Is America far behind?

Poor Malta, here they come!

Only yesterday I reported that Malta’s Prime Minister, Laurence Gonzi, said NOOOO! to taking more African immigrants from Libya or Tunisia.  I also reported that thousands are arriving on Italian islands (here).  Now, hat tip: Charles, we see that two boats packed (packed shoulder to shoulder!) arrived in Malta today with 500 Somalis and Eritreans aboard.

From the Times of Malta:

Two boats carrying some 500 Somali and Eritrean immigrants from Libya entered Malta this afternoon.

The first boat arrived in Dahlet Qorrot, the second at Haywharf at around 5.30 a.m. The Gozo boat was also escorted to Haywharf where it arrived at around 7.30 p.m.

The arrivals were the first in Malta this year and since the conflict between rebels and Gaddafi forces in Libya.

You must watch the film clip of one of the boats being brought in to dock that accompanies the story!  I hate to keep mentioning it, but if you read the almost four decades old French novel, The Camp of the Saints, you have already seen these packed boats in your mind’s eye.

Oh, and one more thing, although the news account says there were women and children aboard, it sure looks like a lot of young men to me.

Immigrant food stamp scammer sentenced in Gary, Indiana

Wouldn’t you think that eventually the word would get around to the food stamp fraudsters that their fellow scammers were being busted from coast to coast.  Nevermind, I take that back, only if they happened to read RRW would they know because no one in the old media ever puts these stories together.

Today’s scam comes from the Post-Tribune in Gary, Indiana:

A Gary man will have to pay back almost $290,000 along with serving 21 months in prison after pleading guilty to food stamp fraud, according to court records.

Husein Kanakrieh was sentenced Wednesday in the U.S. District Court after pleading guilty last year to charges of lying on his income tax filings and abusing food stamps.

Kanakrieh ran a store, Jordan Foods, 4272 Georgia St., Gary, and would buy food stamps for less than their real value, according to his plea agreement. He would then redeem the stamps through his store for full value, the agreement said.

This last line is deceptive.  He redeemed his stamps from the taxpayer!

Africans from Libya and Tunisia land by the thousands on Italian islands

From AP:

ROME (AP) — Boatloads of illegal African migrants have resumed setting sail from Libya for Italy, authorities said, overwhelming tiny islands and towns in southern Italy already struggling to host thousands fleeing unrest in Tunisia.

Before dawn Sunday, Italian coast guard vessels escorted a boat crowded with 284 Somalis, Eritreans and Ethiopians to shore, the first boat to resume the long-established routes of smugglers’ boats toward Italy from Libya’s long coastline.

They are sleeping on the docks and in the fields.

Since Lampedusa, a tiny island off Sicily, is already straining from sheltering the thousands of Tunisians, who have taken to sleeping on docks and fields after housing space ran out, the boat from Libya was diverted to Linosa, an even tinier island in the Pelagie archipelago south of Sicily.

Authorities said at least two other boats coming from Libya with hundreds of migrants aboard were spotted by fishing boats or coast guard air and sea patrolling the southern Mediterranean Sunday.

What are they doing here, they have freedom now in Tunisia?

Sen. Maurizio Gasparri, a close conservative ally of Premier Silvio Berlusconi, said the migrants should be transported back to Tunisia rather than to the mainland.

“They are clandestine (migrants) who ran away from a country where there is no war — on the contrary, there is now more freedom than before,” the Italian news agency ANSA quoted Gasparri as telling reporters.

Over 600 land within a 24 hour period.

Italian border police said in the 24 hours ending at midnight Sunday some 625 migrants, aboard five separate boats landed on Lampedusa. And hundreds had arrived earlier in the week on the island, which is closer to northern Africa than to mainland Italy.

Amazing how prescient Jean Raspail was over 35 years ago when he wrote The Camp of the Saints.

Judicial Watch asks: How many terrorists get across southern border undetected?

Tom Fitton President of Judicial Watch reported this past week at Big Government on a report obtained through the  Freedom of Information Act from Customs and Border Enforcement on the possible number of suspected terrorists getting into the US across our border.  Read it here.

I’ve told you I suspect some of our “humanitarian NGOs” may be helping would-be “asylum seekers” get across the border here.  And, they couldn’t possibly know who the Somalis and others from terror-sponsoring countries really are and who they are affiliated with.
