Rohingya News: Thai Prime Minister warns against linking Rohingya to Islamic extremism in south

Apparently three Rohingya Muslims were arrested in Thailand and a linkage was quickly made to the violent Islamic separatists in southern Thailand.  Abhisit said all the facts are not in.   From the Bangkok Post:

The government is taking a cautious line over connections between three Rohingya arrested this week and reports they helped terrorists and the southern insurgency movement.

[….]

Police were unsure about the precise links and were conducting more inquiries, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said yesterday.

Just run of the mill human trafficking or terrorism?  Who knows!

Mr Abhisit said the men might have made money from human trafficking, without it reaching the separatist movement in the far South.

He also dismissed speculation that al-Qaeda terrorists had slipped into the country to whip up violence in the region.

The government was working with intelligence agencies overseas to make sure that did not happen, the prime minister said.

Several groups were involved in the southern strife and the government knew who they were, he said.

If you are a new reader, our interest in this subject is that there is a growing public relations campaign by resettlement agencies and lobbyists for the refugee industry to resettle Rohingya in the West and the US.   Note how the Refugee Council USA (a coalition of most of the advocacy groups involving refugees) now lists the Rohingya on its home page as one of several important issues they are lobbying about.

The Rohingya will be here, in the US, before more than 99% of Americans ever hear their name.   See our whole category, Rohingya Reports (here) to learn more and be in that tiny minority who understands the implications of these potential new neighbors.

Rohingya Update: Bangladesh has said, enough is enough

The Rohingya Muslims who have been living in Burma (Myanmar) for, they claim, centuries continue to flow out of Burma into neighboring countries.   Bangladesh which has camps for them at places like Cox’s Bazaar has apparently had it and is returning them to Burma as soon as they come across the border according to this report today.

By Tun Kyaw, Coxs bazar: Within four days 178 Rohingya Muslims from Burma who entered Bangladesh illegally were arrested and pushed back across the border to Burma by Bangladesh authorities, a source reports.

The individuals were arrested by Bangladesh Rifles Battalion No. 17 in the area of Bangladesh’s Ukia Sub-division under Cox’s Bazar District on the border of Maungdaw Township in Arakan State as they attempted to enter Bangladesh illegally to seek refuge.

[…..]

Rohingyas from Burma have been illegally entered Bangladesh in groups one after another over the last month. “The flow of Burmese Muslims into Bangladesh has been unabated,” said a border security officer on the condition of anonymity.

Local newspapers claim that Burmese entering Bangladesh are mixing into populations in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and causing crime and social unrest.

Linked with this brief news story is a lengthy treatise claiming the Rohingya were never heard of before the 1950’s and have not lived in Burma’s Arakan State for the centuries they claim.

By the way, where is the outrage against Bangladesh?  You will recall that “human rights” groups went ballistic a few months ago when Thailand pushed Rohingya illegal alien boat MEN back out to sea and the story became international news, start here.   Better still, if you are new to the Rohingya refugee crisis campaign, check out our whole category, Rohingya Reports.

Why do we care?  We care because the public relations push is on to resettle Rohingya in America.

If anyone sees any news from Ms. Hillary at the State Department condemning Muslim Bangladesh, send it my way!   After Obama’s fawning Cairo speech I don’t expect to see too much wrist-slapping of Muslim countries by the Obama Administration.   And, heck we all know how kind and welcoming a Muslim country is to its fellow Muslims!

More evidence of a connection between Rohingya and Islamic terrorism

This is a follow-up to a couple of my previous posts (especially this one) in our Rohingya Reports category (72 posts!) and probably only will hold interest for readers who have been diehard followers of the Rohingya issue.   To make a long story short, this ethnic group—Burmese Muslim Rohingya—is agitating with help from their friends in the NGO community to be resettled in the West.  As far as we know, they are not officially in the US (yet!).  I suspect, however, that some have come in with the Karen Christians*.    They have begun to be officially resettled in the UK and Canada.

This is from the Daily Star in Dhaka (the Capital of Bangladesh).  The Daily Star says it is “journalism without fear or favor.”

Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) had close links with Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO), an insurgent group in the Arakan state of Myanmar, JMB’s explosives expert ‘Boma’ Mizan revealed in interrogations.

Sources close to Rab interrogators said Mizan and some other JMB operatives received training from RSO arms experts in a camp near Myanmar border in 2002.

Now executed JMB chief Shaekh Abdur Rahman sent them for the training. In exchange for the firearms lessons, JMB trained Rohingyas to improvise and set off bombs.

Harkat-ul-Jihad-al Islami (Huji) Bangladesh, another outlawed Islamist outfit, too had strong connections with RSO.

[…..]

Lately, some individuals claiming to be former Huji men told this correspondent that in the late 80s and 90s many of their fellow operatives took arms training from Rohingya rebels.

[…..]

Sources said Huji took RSO help also in securing weapons and funds. The Rohingyan group had extensive supplies of arms, and for funds it would count on a number of Muslim-majority countries especially those in the Middle East.

* We have resettled 8,149 Burmese refugees this fiscal year already (that is from Oct. 1, 2008-April 30, 2009).  That number is second only to the number of Iraqis resettled in that time period (9,581).  We have heard from sources that “Burmese Muslims” were getting into Karen Christian camps and getting into the US.

Rohingya attack NGO’s: Why didn’t we hear more of this?

I found this tiny little mention of riots sometime in the last week at a refugee camp in Bangladesh.   We told you about these Rohingya camps in the very first post we wrote about Rohingya Muslim refugees flooding out of Burma.   Cox’s Bazaar is considered a recruitment site for HUJI-B.

This is all I have on the incident, but would like to know more.  Who were the ten representatives of donor countries and who are the two NGO’s the Rohingya’s are apparently blaming for blocking aid to them?  From The New Nation:

Our Correspondent, Cox’s Bazar

Ten diplomats of the donor countries visited three refugee camps Rohingyas at Ukhia and Teknaf of Cox’s Bazar on Monday last.

The diplomats, besides the refugee camps, also visited Ukhia thana and health complex. After the diplomats left the camps, the Rohingya refugees attacked Leda refugee camp in Teknaf and damaged offices and health centers of two NGOs.

The European diplomats visited the Leda refugee camp amid tight security and they stayed at the camp for short time.

The officials of the two NGOs ran to safety after the attack by refugees. Police posted in those camp brought peace in the camps. But the refugees said the ten donor countries are not coming in aid of the refugees because of the two NGOs.

The European diplomats then visited the slums near the Ukhia refugee camps where around 20,000 Rohinga live.

Just a reminder that there is an NGO public relations campaign on-going to resettle the charming Rohingya in the West.  So far they have gone to Canada and the UK, will the US be next?

State Department notes linkage of Rohingya to terrorist group

Update June 10th, 2012:  Note that the US State Department has removed the terror list link I noted below from its website so it’s a good thing that Watch sent us the text at the time.

A reader named “Watch” has alerted us to a really fascinating link at the US State Department—Country Reports on Terrorism 2008 (dated April 30, 2009).  Check it out here and note that, no surprise, Al-Shabaab is there (you remember the recruiters of our missing Somali refugee youths) and also Lashkar e-Tayyiba (LT) (note several spellings of LT).  Some theories suggest that Farooq Kathwari’s son died as a Kashmiri Jihadist with LT.  Kathwari is of course the Chairman of the Board of Refugees International, a major lobbying group advocating for increased Muslim refugee resettlement in the US.

I am getting off track, below is the whole report “Watch” has sent us on HUJI-B the Bangladeshi terrorist group linked to the Rohingya.   For new readers trying to catch up on why we are concerned about Rohingya go to our entire category on the subject here.   “Watch” posted the following here:

HARAKAT UL-JIHAD-I-ISLAMI/BANGLADESH (HUJI-B)
a.k.a. Harakat ul Jihad e Islami Bangladesh; Harkatul Jihad al Islam; Harkatul Jihad; Harakat ul Jihad al Islami; Harkat ul Jihad al Islami; Harkat-ul-Jehad-al-Islami; Harakat ul Jihad Islami Bangladesh; Islami Dawat-e-Kafela; IDEK

Description: Harakat ul-Jihad-i-Islami/Bangladesh (HUJI-B) was designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization on March 5, 2008. HUJI-B was formed in April 1992 by a group of former Bangladeshi Afghan veterans to establish an Islamic social system based on the “Medina Charter.” The group was banned by Bangladeshi authorities in October 2005. In May 2008, HUJI-B members formed a new organization, the Islamic Democratic Party (IDP). In November, government authorities rejected their application for registering as a party that could participate in elections. HUJI-B has connections to the Pakistani militant groups Harakat ul-Jihad-Islami (HUJI) and Harakat ul-Mujahedin (HUM), which advocate similar objectives in Pakistan, Jammu, and Kashmir. The leaders of HUJI-B and HUM both signed the February 1998 fatwa sponsored by Usama bin Ladin that declared American civilians to be legitimate targets for attack.

Activities: HUJI-B may be responsible for numerous terrorist attacks in India, including an October 2008 attack in a shopping area in Agartala, Tripura that killed three and wounded over 100 people. The Agartala attack may have been conducted jointly with a local Indian separatist group. HUJI-B has trained and fielded operatives in Burma to fight on behalf of the Rohingya, an Islamic minority group. Three HUJI-B members were convicted in December 2008 for the grenade attack on the British High Commissioner in May 2004 in Sylhet, Bangladesh. Bangladeshi courts issued warrants in December 2008 for the arrest of eight HUJI-B members for the bombing at a festival in April 2001 that killed 10 and injured scores of people. In May, Indian police arrested HUJI-B militant Mohammad Iqbal, a.k.a. Abdur Rehman, who was charged with plotting attacks in Delhi, India. HUJI-B and its detained leader, Mufti Hannan, are also suspected in a 2000 assassination attempt on Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Strength: HUJI-B leaders have claimed up to 400 members are Afghan war veterans, but its total membership is unknown.

Location/Area of Operation: The group operates primarily in Bangladesh, India, and Burma. HUJI-B has a network of madrassas and conducts trainings in Bangladesh.

External Aid: HUJI-B funding comes from a variety of sources. Several international Islamic NGOs such as the South African-based Servants of Suffering Humanity may have funneled money to HUJI-B and other Bangladeshi militant groups. HUJI-B also can draw funding from local militant madrassa leaders and teachers.

For new readers, we have 70 posts in the Rohingya Reports category, the bottom line is that there is a public relations campaign underway to begin resettling Rohingya in the US.  Refugees International has advocated for their resettlement.  Some have already gone to Canada and the UK.
