Asylee or refugee? Chart showing US “refugee” numbers is confusing

There is a chart making the rounds (several people have sent it to me) which supposedly shows the “origins” of “refugees” admitted to the US.   Although the text makes it clear that the numbers are for those granted “asylum” in the US (yes, they become refugees, aka asylees, for the purpose of getting their goodies), but to call them “refugees” is confusing.

A refugee is generally considered to be someone the UN selects abroad and is admitted into the US by the State Department after some initial screening.  A successful asylee is someone who got to the US on his or her own steam and then asked for asylum and were subsequently granted refugee status.

So why do the “unaccompanied minors” from Central America need lawyers? Because they are going to be applying for asylum (although most are economic migrants, not legitimate refugees). http://www.breitbart.com/Breitbart-Texas/2014/06/05/Leaked-Images-Reveal-Children-Warehoused-in-Crowded-US-Cells-Border-Patrol-Overwhelmed

Also, the chart does not tell us what the time frame is for the numbers or where the author got them—are the numbers for 10 years, 5 years, one year???

Regular readers here can quickly see that the numbers are wrong if we are talking about “refugees” admitted by the US because leading that list in recent years are Iraqis, Burmese, Bhutanese and Somalis.

We don’t admit Chinese “refugees” in any great number.  This year (see stats here) for example in the same period that we took 32 Chinese “refugees” we have admitted 11,660 Iraqis.

Since the chart making the rounds lists Chinese “refugees” as over 65,000 it is clearly attempting to show “asylees” or “asylum seekers” (those who have not yet been granted asylum).   Those Chinese asylum seekers got in here through either illegal means or overstayed a visa (also illegal!).

By the way, most Chinese asylum seekers are frauds!  Remember this story from last February?

In fact, another bunch of frauds are the “unaccompanied kids” from mostly Central America who got in here illegally and are going to be seeking asylum.  If approved they will be refugees with all of the social services and rights available to a US citizen (except voting, but they will be doing that too!).   See our fact sheet for what refugees and asylees (those granted asylum) are eligible to receive.

Here is the government’s Annual Flow Report for 2012 which helps further make the distinction between “refugees” and “asylees.”  (Don’t ask me why they don’t have 2013 available, but I bet it’s because their “asylee” numbers are a chaotic mess or so over-the-top that they don’t want you to know!).

I sure hope that helps!

Out of town ….

I’m away for a few day to take care of some family business and will have little or no access to the internet.

If you are arriving here for the first time, I’m sure if you look around, you will find the information you need.

First, see our “about” page.  And, our most popular feature our “fact sheet.“

Check out “top posts” in the right hand side bar to see what other readers are finding most interesting.  Also, note tag clouds.   See our “categories” in the left hand side bar (the ‘where to find information’ category is filled with reports, statistic, documents) and then use our search function for specific topics.

We have written 5,689 posts over the last seven years, so you should be able to find something useful by typing a few key words into our search function.  For example, the hot topic these days include ‘unaccompanied minors,’ or ‘Syrian refugees.’    Don’t type in ‘Somali refugees’ without another key word unless you have all weekend to read!

Thanks and be back on Monday!

Addendum:  Almost forgot!  Since we moderate comments, those won’t be posted until I come back.

Lexington, KY: World Refugee Day event visited by Americans First

Could a new “pocket of resistance” be building in Kentucky?

As you know, political leaders in several cities are voicing their concerns about the large numbers of refugees placed in their cities and as a result putting enormous strain on social service and school system budgets.  We reported yesterday about requests for moratoriums on further refugee resettlement in several New England states.   And, don’t forget earlier this year Amarillo, TX was also asking for a reprieve.

And, as you know, last Friday was World Refugee Propaganda Day.

(An aside:  I just saw an interesting perspective on World Refugee Day where a commenter wondered why anyone would celebrate the fact that the UN has utterly failed in its supposed mission to quell violence around the world.)

We told you on June 16th that Lexington, KY would be the site of a World Refugee Day “celebration” put on by Kentucky Refugee Ministries (a refugee resettlement subcontractor of Church World Service working for the federal government).

Americans First:  Fighting for social and economic justice for US Citizens

What we didn’t know was that a budding organization called “Americans First” planned to pass out fact sheets at the event with information attendees need to know!

Go here for the excellent Fact Sheet!   And, tune in to Americans First radio!

Surprisingly, the media was not at the “Summit” but Kentucky Refugee Ministries dubbed it a success with 160 participants (a large number of which received Americans First fact sheet).

Contact Americans First, here.   Organizers plan to make this a national movement.

Second largest religious tradition by state; Islam in 20 states

This is old news by a few weeks, but Debbie sent me this very informative map today that was published at The Blaze a couple of weeks ago and I think it’s a good addition to our ‘where to find information’ category.    And, perhaps a good companion to our refugee statistics regarding top languages spoken by refugees admitted to the US (Arabic is the number one language of refugees arriving in the US right now).

By the way, the US State Department does track the religions of refugees they admit to the US, but does not make that information available to the general public.

Got worms? Watch out for pork tapeworms in refugee populations arriving in US!

I don’t know why this alert showed up in my inbox yesterday—it is from the CDC in 2012.  But, what the heck, just for a little change of pace before we get back to more news about the “refugee” invasion on the southern border.

http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/cysticercosis/biology.html

From the CDC (and especially for anyone volunteering to care for newly arrived refugees):

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a disease caused by central nervous system infection by the larval stage of the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium. In developing countries, NCC is a leading cause of adult-onset epilepsy. Case reports of NCC are increasing among refugees resettled to the United States and other nations, but the underlying prevalence among refugee groups is unknown. We tested stored serum samples from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Migrant Serum Bank for antibodies against T. solium cysts by using the enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot.

Seroprevalence was high among all 4 populations tested: refugees from Burma (23.2%), Lao People’s Democratic Republic (18.3%), Bhutan (22.8%), and Burundi (25.8%). Clinicians caring for refugee populations should suspect NCC in patients with seizure, chronic headache, or unexplained neurologic manifestations. Improved understanding of the prevalence of epilepsy and other associated diseases among refugees could guide recommendations for their evaluation and treatment before, during, and after resettlement.

[….]

The widespread exposure among these groups has clinical and public health implications because these populations are resettling to the United States, where the infection is not endemic and where many clinical providers are not familiar with the disease manifestations, diagnosis, or treatment.

It is a good thing we have Obamacare to pay for all this medical treatment required by refugees carrying parasites!
