Columbus, Ohio mosques mushrooming thanks to refugee population growth

Related (update): More mosque problems in Boston, here.

Yesterday we mentioned Columbus as it relates to Somali Islamists recruiting jihadists in Columbus, here.

Demographics! Demographics! Demographics!

And, today I see that Columbus saw another grand opening of a mosque on Saturday to accommodate the growing Muslim population there of mostly Somalis, Iraqis and other Arabs (secondary migrants) who the article in the Columbus Dispatch actually says are moving to Columbus because of the mosques.

Read the article about the mosques here .  And, then any of you Ohioans who want to dig down into the Refugee Resettlement program of the US State Department should visit Ohio Refugees Services in the Ohio Dept. of Job and Family Services.

Get to know the resettlement agencies (contractors) which include at least three of the big nine:  World Relief (Evangelicals), Catholic Charities (USCCB) and subcontractors for the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society.  They are every year bringing more Muslim refugees to Columbus.

And, I was interested to see that Ohio has a published Refugee Resettlement Plan.

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of pulling the facts together wherever you live.

Columbus, OH: Somalis complain about housing conditions; but there is more to this story!

To set the stage, we have your basic story—‘legal aid’ lawyers whip up Somali tenants to complain about their landowner.  It begins as follows at The Columbus Dispatch:

Cockroaches and mice scurry across the carpeted floor where Luul Botan’s three young children play.

The bathroom and kitchen faucets leak a steady stream of water. Some of the kitchen cabinets are broken. The drawers stick. And the front door doesn’t close easily, leaving the 32-year-old mother fearful that someone might break into their North Side apartment at night.

Remember this story from 2012 where police had to break up crowds of Somalis fighting for subsidized housing in Columbus. http://www.barenakedislam.com/2012/12/10/columbus-ohio-muslim-crowd-of-2000-turns-violent-waiting-to-apply-for-subsidized-apartments/

“The conditions are horrible, and the management at Capital Park apartments doesn’t care how bad it gets,” she said last week through a Somali interpreter.

Botan said she fears that her children, who are 5 years, 1 year and 4 months old, are being sickened by the insects and mouse droppings. She said she asked the manager five times to replace a missing screen in the living-room window of her second-floor apartment in the complex on Agler Road.

“I’m so afraid my daughter will fall out when she runs over to watch children playing outside. It’s so dangerous,” she said.

During the past several weeks, dozens of Capital Park residents have called the city of Columbus about what they say is a worsening problem. With the help of Legal Aid attorneys and other volunteers, the mostly low-income Somali refugees have also begun sending letters to the management of the 314-unit complex owned by Volunteers of America, requesting repairs that many have already asked for.

“The tenants in this case are stepping up, asking the landlord merely to do what Ohio law requires: Keep the rental property fit, habitable and up to code,” said Benjamin D. Horne, a managing attorney with the Legal Aid Society of Columbus.

Most of the residents were resettled by the federal government from refugee camps in Kenya, he said. They have little knowledge of their rights. [Nor little knowledge of how to care for a home and appliances, according to this story—ed]

I would like to know which refugee resettlement contractor resettled them in this building.  And, what connection they have to Volunteers of America.

Who the heck is this Volunteers of America which owns the Capital Park building?

Is this one more example of how the whole refugee business has turned into one more get-rich scheme by people tapping into the federal treasury?   I’ve been for a long time referring to refugee resettlement as an industry (driven by companies looking for cheap labor) and here is a whole new angle to the mess.

The Columbus Dispatch goes on to tell us this:

David Burch, a spokesman for the national office of the Volunteers of America in Alexandria, Va., said some complaints went directly to the city, which has sent 32 code-violation notices in the past three weeks.

[….]

Volunteers of America bought the complex in 2000 and did a $4.5 million renovation two years later, Burch said. Government sources, including the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, provided the funds for the renovation.

The 45-year-old complex is slated for another makeover in three years, he said, when it is eligible for more federal funding.

“Our primary goal is taking care of our people and making sure they have decent housing so they can build a successful life,” he said.

Now, check out a recent Form990 for Volunteers of America’s office in Alexandria, Virginia (just one branch of VOA):

It is a NON-PROFIT ‘holding company’ with $62 million in assets and although its employees are apparently paid nothing from the organization, its CEO makes nearly a half million dollars a year in salary and benefits! from related organizations (page 7) and there are seven other employees in the 6-figure range.  What related organizations?

These financial machinations are all way beyond my ability to understand, but it sure confirms for me that there are some big players with big money (much of it your tax dollars) helping to drive the importation of “refugees” into America, while hiding under the white hat of humanitarianism.

What is up with Ohio—it sure is being targeted as a “welcoming” state for refugees? Making sure Ohio is blue?  See our Ohio archive here and see especially this post where “Welcoming America” came to town in Cleveland over a year ago to be sure the community there is ready to welcome more immigrants.  Apparently, Columbus is vying with Minneapolis in building a Somali enclave.

Columbus, OH: Somali sentenced in ‘No Child Left Behind’ scam

Apparently this is one of several cases of this particular scam being investigated in Columbus, Ohio because we posted on another one, here, back in February.

From the Norwalk Reflector (Hat tip: ‘pungentpeppers’).  Emphasis is mine:

A Somali man who ran a scam tutoring company for needy Franklin County students was sentenced to 13 months in prison Thursday on federal charges of falsifying invoices and stealing students’ identities.

Ashkir Ali, 46, of Balsam Lake Drive on the East Side, pleaded guilty in November to the charges. He faced as many as seven years in prison.

Ashkir Ali could be deported, and he might actually do Somalia more good than he does the US. But, don’t hold your breath!

“I’m not coming back here,” Ali told U.S. District Judge Edmund A. Sargus Jr. “I’ve learned my lesson.”

Sargus ordered Ali to pay $115,916 in restitution and to serve 13 months in a federal prison and five months in a half-way house. He said a mandatory two-year prison sentence for identity theft was reduced because of Ali’s “substantial assistance” in investigating tutoring fraud.

Ali was indicted more than a year ago after a two-year investigation of his company, WAISS Network Technologies, by the Ohio auditor’s office.

The probe revealed that WAISS made $100,000 from Columbus and $20,000 from South-Western city schools as part of the federal “supplemental educational services” tutoring program, mandated by the No Child Left Behind law.

The other day I mentioned that there is beginning to be some reporting by the mainstream media about the refugee program in negative news about refugees.  A few years ago there would not have been a line like the next one in a crime report, while fluffy puffy feel-good stories would always mention the ‘r’ word.

Ali came to the United States in 1997 as a political refugee and is a permanent U.S. resident, Sargus said. He could be deported to Somalia after his prison term because he has been convicted of an aggravated felony, according to his plea agreement.

He won’t be deported, not the way things are going now with ICE (see Senator Sessions).

By the way, Columbus is right behind Minneapolis with its rapidly expanding Somali population.

Columbus, Ohio Somalis are going home to Somalia to rebuild their country….

…..while we continue to bring more in to the US.

It’s only 54 leaving, so far, but its a step in the right direction.  Here is the story from NPR News:

Work ahead in the homeland! Mogadishu was destroyed by Al-Shabaab Islamists. 2012 photo from Wodu Media

Thousands of Somalis came to Columbus during the past 20 years to escape civil war. Columbus soon had the second largest Somali community in the United States. The immigrants set up businesses, enrolled in schools and made new lives for themselves.

But now some are returning home. A small group of Somalis are going back with hopes of rebuilding the devastated African nation.

[…..]

Before the war, Mogadishu was a city of two and half million people with glistening beaches on the east Coast of Africa. Twenty two years of civil war has destroyed many of the city’s buildings and left others pock-marked by bullets. The beaches are polluted and have been used as launch points for Somali pirates.

Despite the trouble, 34-year-old Ahmed Adan moved back to Mogadishu from Columbus in January. He works with the new government. During a telephone conversation from Mogadishu he says while sporadic fighting still occurs, the time of civil war is over. On most days, he says, “life goes normal.”

“There is a lot of people coming back and I have been actually actively talking to people in Columbus, in Minnesota and other parts of the United States to people that I know,” Adan says.

Adan says he returned to Somalia because he wants to help his homeland out of a crisis. He says Mogadishu is changing from something that was almost a “ghost town” to someplace that is actually livable.

[…..]

The head of the Somali Community Association on Cleveland Avenue says 54 people from Columbus have returned to Mogadishu. At the Franklin County Council on Aging, caseworker Loodar Dafur, sees a slight drop in demand recently for elderly services among Somalis.

[…..]

Basra Mohamed is a Somali language radio host for a community station in Columbus. Her weekly programs are heard not only here but in other U.S. cities with large Somali populations. She says the pull toward Somalia is felt wherever refugees have fled.

“Not just Columbus, but people are going from Minneapolis, going from Portland, Maine, going from all the other, not just one place, even in Europe, people are going back to Somalia.” We lost a lot, we lost so much and going back means gaining some normality and getting sense of normality and finding yourself, I think,” Says Mohamed.

What’s wrong with this picture?

So tell me why the US State Department has admitted 4,921 Somalis to the US in the first 8 months of this fiscal year!  American tax payers are paying a “church” contractor to resettle those “refugees” in your town and we will pay for food, housing, medical care and education for the kids while earlier “refugees” return to their homeland!

It would be cheaper and less disruptive (remember the housing riot in Columbus in December?) to give the supposed new batch of “refugees” a stipend and send them to Mogadishu!

American Somalis protest against South Africa mistreatment of fellow Somalis

This is an interesting turn of events.  Just this morning I wrote about Somalis in South Africa protesting the “xenophobic” treatment of Somali migrants by other black people in the Rainbow Nation, here.

Now comes news (really only the photo below, I couldn’t find a story) about a protest in Columbus, Ohio (one of the largest Somali resettlement sites in the US) in support of Somalis in South Africa and against the government there.

American Somalis should tell Obama to put pressure on the African National Congress to be more welcoming when he visits there later this month, after all that’s what the Rainbow Nation idea was all about.  Right?

Also, today, it has been reported that the man considered the father of this model socialist government, 94-year-old Nelson Mandela, has been hospitalized in Johannesburg.

This is from the Columbus Dispatch:

Hamain Ismail of Columbus holds the Somali flag during a march on the North Side before attending speeches about the mistreatment of Somalis in South Africa. Local Somalis gathered in the parking lot of the former Value City Department Store on Innis Road to call attention to the situation.
