Finland seeing asylum seekers convert to Christianity after first application rejection….

….and authorities are scratching their heads and wondering if it’s for real. Really!

I’m thinking they need to be reading Bill Warner’s books!

Finland, of course, is where we saw a recent Islamic terror knife attack, here.

HELSINKI, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) — Asylum seekers of Islamic background have increasingly switched to Christianity in Finland, officials have said.

Kari Kiesilainen, a head of section at the Ministry of Justice, told national broadcaster Yle this week that the number of converts has come as a surprise.

He did not give exact figures, but said the situation caused delays in application assessment as often an oral hearing may have to be arranged in the administrative courts.

This year Finnish authorities have rejected more applications than they accepted. Some 2,692 applications led to a status for “international protection”, whereas 2,847 were rejected. The rejected applicants can either leave the country or file a complaint to the administrative courts, otherwise they are subject to forced deportation.

Yle reported that a change of religion has been mostly claimed when the first application is dismissed and the applicant files a complaint.

Now, the question is, what are the real motives of the converts? Do they really want to get rid of their old religion or just want to increase the chances of staying?

While the civil servants are to shoulder the responsibility to figure out the reality, specialists from the national Evangelic Lutheran Church believe the new converts often take a personal risk in their decision and have usually considered their options carefully.

Marja Laihia, a specialist for immigrant services at the Central Administration of the Finnish Evangelic Lutheran Church, reminded that refugees arrive in an environment of religious freedom, which is new to them.

Talking to Xinhua, she said arrivals have mostly lived in countries were Islam is enforced, either by the state or at least by the extended families. “Now they are in a country where they can choose on their own,” she said. [Funny! Why then didn’t they choose on the first application?—ed]

Finland: Moroccan Muslim asylum seeker was targeting women in terror spree

“Then a person ran towards us shouting ‘He has a knife’, and everybody from the terrace ran inside. Next, a woman came in to the cafe. She was crying hysterically, down on her knees, saying someone’s neck has been slashed open.”

Surely you know what happened in Finland on the heals of Barcelona, but here from Reuters we get more facts on the killer and the poor innocent women who were sadly in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Over the years we have written a few posts on Finland, but it isn’t as easily accessible (or slovenly welcoming) as other Scandinavian countries like Sweden and Norway.

This Reuters story is surprisingly unrestrained and relatively free of whitewash (or is that because those quoted weren’t pulling punches and speaking in politically correct terms?):

HELSINKI/TURKU, Finland (Reuters) – Finnish police said on Saturday that an 18-year-old Moroccan man, arrested after a knife rampage that killed two people and wounded eight, appeared to have targeted women and that the spree was being treated as the country’s first terrorism-related attack.

The suspect arrested following the attack on Friday after being shot in the leg by police in the city of Turku had arrived in Finland last year, police said. They said they later arrested four other Moroccan men over possible links to him and had issued an international arrest warrant for a sixth Moroccan national.

Finnish broadcaster MTV, citing an unnamed source, said the main suspect had been denied asylum in Finland. The police said only that he had been “part of the asylum process”.

The case marks the first suspected terror attack in Finland, where violent crime is relatively rare.

“The suspect’s profile is similar to that of several other recent radical Islamist terror attacks that have taken place in Europe,” Director Antti Pelttari from the Finnish Security Intelligence Service told a news conference.

Both of those killed in the Turku attack, and six of the eight who were wounded, were women, the police said. The two who died were Finns, and an Italian and two Swedish citizens were among the injured.

Ville Tavio (Finns party): Asylum system is primary means of entry for terrorists.

“It seems that the suspect chose women as his targets, because the men who were wounded were injured when they tried to help, or prevent the attacks,” said Crista Granroth from the National Bureau of Investigation.

“The act was cowardly … we have been afraid of this and we have prepared for this. We are not an island anymore, the whole of Europe is affected,” Prime Minister Juha Sipila said. [Well, maybe not Poland and Hungary that have closed their borders to Muslim migration!—ed]

Some members of the nationalist Finns party, which was kicked out of the government in June for their new hard-line anti-immigration leadership, blamed the government for what they said was too loose an immigration policy.

“The asylum system is the primary road for illegal immigration, used also by the terrorists. Harmful immigration can be controlled only by reducing Finland’s attractiveness, or by border controls,” said Finns party lawmaker Ville Tavio.

What is asylum? (As opposed to refugee resettlement)

In the refugee resettlement process, wannabe refugees must prove they are persecuted, the UN screens them (supposedly!) and a country accepts them and flies them in.

For asylum, the wannabe refugee makes his or her way to a ‘safe’ country and then applies for asylum (or often called political asylum). They are supposed to make a case that they would be persecuted if returned home. Europe is dealing with mostly asylum seekers (many are phony and are really economic migrants) who are basically loose in the country until their cases can be processed.

And, are often loose because they have been rejected and no one has made them leave!

So, it is a misnomer when you hear the Left and political leaders refer to asylum seekers as refugees. They are not legitimate refugees until their cases have been processed and the governmental body responsible has granted them asylum.

Surprise! 'Refugees' not liking life in Finland headed home to Iraq by the thousands, kiss the ground

This news strikes me as a possible partial solution to the European migrant crisis—make the asylum process difficult and offer charter flights home.
In fact, a smart legislator in America should introduce a bill that would set up a ‘Repatriation Fund’ to pay refugees (and illegal aliens) air fare home. I would even throw in a little starter money when they promise not to come back! Learn about this idea from a guest comment, here. Over the years we have heard from (and about) refugees to America who are very unhappy (disillusioned!), but have no resources to get home.
I am convinced that a Repatriation Fund would be cheaper for the American taxpayer than paying out all of the welfare, healthcare, and education costs of the migrants!

Here is the news from Thursday (I missed a lot of news this week, so am trying to catch up!) at the UK Daily Mail:

Iraqi refugees who left Finland voluntarily due to chilly weather conditions have been pictured kissing the ground in joyous scenes upon their return to Baghdad.

Thousands of the migrants who left Finland arrived back in the Iraqi capital today and were pictured greeting loved ones and celebrating their return home.

They had originally fled to Finland only to become disappointed with life in the frosty Scandinavian country.

Photographs taken of their arrival in Baghdad showed some crying with relief at being reunited with loved ones, while others kissed the floor of the airport after touching down.

Europe is in the grip of its worst migrant crisis since the Second World War, with more than a million people arriving last year having fled wars and poverty in the Middle East and Africa.

Although Germany and Sweden have taken in many of the migrants, Finland too saw its number of asylum seekers increase nearly tenfold in 2015 to 32,500 from 3,600 in 2014.

Almost two thirds of these were young Iraqi men, but some changed their mind and returned after Finland chartered flights to Baghdad.

Officials said about 4,100 asylum seekers had so far cancelled their applications and that number was likely to reach 5,000 in the coming months.

Will recent gang rape have any affect on upcoming elections in Finland?

The gang rapists are alleged to be Somali young men. Leftists say it has nothing to do with who they are—they just need jobs. So, what do you do if there are too many low-skilled immigrant young men in your country who can’t find work, not assimilating and committing crimes? You stop bringing in those young men from Africa and the Middle East and deport those committing crimes! It is a no-brainer!

HELSINKI, March 17 (Xinhua) — Finnish police arrested five young immigrants on suspicion of having raped a young woman outside a suburban railroad station a week ago. The incident has since focused public attention on integration and criminality within immigrant communities in Finland.

It looks like almost every European country has an immigration restriction party that is gaining favor. This is True Finns’s leader Timo Soini.

Finnish media said the five arrested boys, aged between 15 and 18, are of Somali descent. Charges are expected in a month’s time.

A study by the National Research Institute Research of Legal Policy last year indicated higher criminality in some immigrant groups, particularly those with a high ratio of young men.

It is all about income they say, nothing to do with being Somali!

The institute concluded that difference between immigrants and natives was in part explained by the high proportion of young men and low-median income levels.

The institute also said that the criminal involvement of immigrant groups varied considerably. There are groups with crime and victimization rates that are higher than in the majority populations, but other immigrant groups manifest below average offending and victimization risks.

Abdirahim Hussein, a Finnish-Somali candidate for the upcoming parliamentary election, condemned the alleged rape, but rejected the view that the Somali community in Finland would bear even partial responsibility for the actions of five individuals.

News service Uusi Suomi quoted him as saying that the Somali background of the alleged perpetrators was not the real issue. “The lives of the young men simply are not going well,” said Hussein.

While the alleged gang rape took place a month before the general election, political observers are waiting to see how the incident will affect the populist True Finns’s leader Timo Soini.

Finland begins to close the door to refugees

While Sweden still lives in la-la land, the Finnish people are not so naive….

Although Finland didn’t take very many refugees to begin with, I wonder if that brutal murder committed allegedly by a Somali in a small town pub had anything to do with Finnish feelings toward asylum seekers.

American readers take note, in Finland, communities have a say about taking refugees while in America the State Department and its contractors are constantly scouting out new and unsuspecting towns and you will get refugees dropped off with little notice if you aren’t continually on watch.

Finnish municipalities have significantly cut quotas on receiving refugees from foreign countries.

Refugee quotas have significantly been reduced by Finnish municipalities, with just 40 of them signaling readiness to receive refuges, local media outlets reported.

Last year, the municipalities received more than 1,000 refugees, a record number that experts attributed to additional government funding and the Syrian conflict.

In addition, Finland increased the quota for refugees from 750 to over a thousand.

This year, the refugee quota stands at 1050, but it is unlikely to be implemented in time.

Meanwhile, the regions of Satakunta and South Ostrobothnia have said that they will not receive refugees this year.

People fleeing Syria remain refugees of choice for Finnish municipalities, while refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo are reportedly the most unwelcome people.

This last line is very interesting! Apparently Finns are still o.k. with Syrians, but one of the UNHCR’s newest big resettlement pushes—for those from the Democratic Republic of Congo—is getting a cold reception. American readers know that we are expected to receive most of the 50,000 from DR Congo within five years (we are already into that five year resettlement plan).
