Las Vegas: jobs for refugees or jobs for refugee resettlement workers, that is the question

Readers please visit Friends of Refugees blog here daily to find out all the latest on what the federal refugee contractors are up to.  Here is a good post by Christopher Coen on Saturday about refugees continuing to be brought to Las Vegas inspite of Nevada’s extremely high unemployment rate.

The African Community Center and the State Department are continuing to resettle refugees to Las Vegas despite the city’s official unemployment rate of 14.2% (some estimate the “real” unemployment rate is closer to 25%). An article in the Vegas Seven publication extolls African Community Center’s virtues, while not asking any questions….

[…..]

Yet, why is the State Department, the African Community Center, and ECDC (Ethiopian Community Development Council) continuing to resettle refugees to a state and city with such a high unemployment rates? Does it make any sense to do so? The ECDC and the African Community Center would no doubt protest that they would have to shut down operations in Nevada if the State Department were to cut the flow of refugees and federal funding, but at what price does this come to refugees to continue to resettle them to a place with such low employment prospects? What is more important, jobs for refugees or jobs for refugee resettlement workers? I guess we know the answer.

The director of the Las Vegas African resettlement agency is Berihun Teferra I wonder if she is any relation to the President of the Ethiopian Community Development Council, Tsehaye Teferra, here.

Virgil Goode: Anchor babies cost taxpayers–bigtime!

Your tax dollars:

Former Virginia Congressman, Virgil Goode, has published another good piece on a hot immigration issue at Frontpage magazine this morning.   It begins:

In his address to the country on immigration last week, President Obama said that “being an American is not a matter of blood or birth.” Our current government policy of giving automatic US citizenship to the children illegal aliens [not just illegal aliens but any other foreigner who happens to be here temporarily–ed] who are born on American soil makes being American solely a matter of birth.

Americans are quickly waking up to the disaster that is the arbitrary government policy of guaranteed automatic citizenship to the children of illegal aliens. A Rasmussen Poll found that 58% of Americans opposed granting citizenship to the children of illegal aliens, while only 33% supported it.

Birthright citizenship creates a massive fiscal burden on the American taxpayer.

Read it all, especially the part about how Obamacare will be used by illegal aliens through their children.

Virginia: more indictments against Somali pirates

A couple of pirate cases being tried in Virginia (home port of the allegedly attacked ships) caught my attention when one of the groups of pirates claimed they were only ferrying refugees.

From the Virginian Pilot:

A federal grand jury issued new indictments this week against two sets of Somali nationals, adding more criminal charges bolstering the government’s piracy case against the 11 men.

[…..]

Those charged in the Ashland attack claim they were ferrying refugees from Somalia to Yemen when they became lost at sea. They fired at the ship, they say, out of a desperate attempt to get attention.

Do you know that if that last group (the supposed refugee-ferrying Somalis) get off they will likely be allowed to stay in the US.  We don’t deport Somalis back to Somalia.

Wanda Sykes!

This article also drew my attention because of the comment someone left that sent me looking for the source.  Sure enough, here it is!   BLACK comedian Wanda Sykes (friend of Obama) said the following in October 2009 about Somali pirates:

And, of all the bad luck, how did he (Obama) catch a term where he’d have to fight pirates? Pirates!

After trying to figure out how a bunch of bums in small boats manage to hijack giant oil tankers she asks, “Where the f- – – do pirates even come from?” And why don’t they look like pirates are supposed to look, “and not like car jackers?”

Her solution to the captured pirate they recently brought back for trial? “Chop his leg off, stick a broom handle up there, stick a hook on his arm, a patch on his eye, a parrot on his shoulder and kick his ass back to Somalia!”

Imagine for a moment that a prominent white comedian had said such a thing!  He or she would be out of work.

Three suspected al-Qaeda terrorists arrested in Europe…

….all three were either refugees or asylum seekers.

From CNN World:

The Norwegian citizen is of Uyghur origin, police said. He went to Norway at the end of the 1990s as a resettlement refugee and obtained citizenship in 2007.

The second is an Iraqi-Kurdish man who went to Norway at the end of the 1990s and was granted a residence permit on humanitarian grounds.

The last man is an Uzbek who went to Norway as an asylum seeker at the beginning of the 2000s. His application for asylum was rejected, but he was later granted a residence permit in Norway based on family reunification, police said.

They were plotting against the US and the UK.

Wondering where we’ve been? Not much time to write these days as I mentioned here.   For readers who happen to live in Maryland, you can read more about what I’m doing here.  Right now I’m organizing this meeting on illegal immigration.

New Austrialian Prime Minister wants to set up regional processing center in East Timor

As we hear often from our Australian readers, Australia is having the same problems as the US and other first world countries—illegal aliens are attempting to get into our countries by whatever means they can.   Julia Gilliard, the new Prime Minister of Australia, says she wants to find a long-lasting solution to one of the hottest issues facing western nations—-immigration.  Good luck with that.

From ABC News:

Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott both announced new policies on border protection today as the asylum seeker debate took centre stage in pre-election political manoeuvres.

Taking aim at what she called the Opposition’s “rhetoric” and “hollow slogans” on turning asylum seekers back at sea, Ms Gillard announced that the Government was negotiating with East Timor on setting up a “regional processing centre” to handle new boat arrivals before they arrived in Australia.

She said she had held talks with the United Nations as well as East Timor president Jose Ramos-Horta and New Zealand’s prime minister John Key on setting up the centre and asked for the “patience and support” of the Australian people.

“The purpose [of the new centre] would be to ensure that people smugglers have no product to sell,” she said.

“A boat ride to Australia would just be a ticket back to the regional processing centre … to ensure that everyone is subject to a consistent, fair assessment process.

New UN Report says there is no need for Tamils to seek asylum!

How about telling that to the US State Department and their contractor the International Rescue Committee—we don’t need to resettle Tamils in Oakland (or anywhere else!).

Ms Gillard said the Government was lifting the suspension on processing claims for Sri Lankans after the release of a new UN report overnight, clearing the way for all Sri Lankan asylum claims to be processed as far as possible.

The report, from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, described “greatly improved” security in Sri Lanka, and said it should not be presumed that Tamils need asylum.

“I have a message for people in Sri Lanka who might be considering the journey to Australia,” Ms Gillard said.

“Do not pay a people smuggler, do not risk your life only to arrive in Australian waters to find that you are far, far more likely than anything else to be quickly sent home by plane.”
