Boy born in Sierra Leone refugee camp is Staten Island’s No.1 problem child

Whew is this a weird story.  This 11-year old refugee boy is facing criminal charges for harassing a Muslim girl, but his family is Muslim too.   And, on top of it all, his father bought a plane ticket to send him back to Sierra Leone.

From Gothamist:.

11-year-old Osman Daramy, a Staten Island sixth-grader who faces felony hate crime charges for assaulting a Muslim classmate, appeared in Family Court yesterday in the Bronx. Previously, the Post ran a sad photo of Daramy getting marched out of school in handcuffs and ankle shackles, and today the tabloid follows up with a photo of Daramy defiantly flipping off the tabloid’s photographer. We realize Daramy—who was born in a refugee camp Sierra Leone—has his problems, but we’ve got to give the kid credit for giving the Post the salute it deserves.

At Daramy’s arraignment yesterday, Judge Helene Sacco ordered the boy held without bail until his next court appearance Tuesday, because of concerns he could commit another crime. Assistant District Attorney Teresa Wilson told the judge that Daramy is “a public safety risk,” adding, “It was not one incident. It was a continued course of behavior.” Daramy had allegedly been harassing his victim for some time now, and prosecutors say he was joined by a 13-year-old female accomplice two months ago when he punched and kicked the Muslim girl and tried to rip off her hijab outside Dreyfus Intermediate School.

On Wednesday, Daramy allegedly approached the girl saying, “Aren’t you the Muslim girl we beat up? We’ll beat you up again.” He then shoved her to the ground, punched her, and again tried to rip off the hijab, prosecutors say. Though Daramy was defiant for the cameras outside court, once inside he was reduced to tears, as was his father, Frank Davis, who points out he and his wife are Muslim. “How could a Muslim have another hate crime against a Muslim?” he asked yesterday, adding that he has bought a plane ticket and intends to send Daramy back to Sierra Leone.

Don’t ask me how he can send him back to Sierra Leone when he is facing felony hate crime charges in our legal system.

One more reminder—get your kids out of public schools!

A depressing story all around. Daramy faces up to 18 months in a juvenile facility if convicted of assault and harassment as hate crimes, and the Post has dubbed him “Staten Island’s No. 1 problem child.” His school, Dreyfus Intermediate, is also known as a problem school, and yesterday local merchants staged a small rally outside, calling for a “full evaluation of the school and faculty” by the DOE to address the impact on the surrounding community. And one parent told the Staten Island Advance, “It’s hell. There is no safety in there from the teachers or the guards.”

More on Native Americans and Somalis trying to get along

I told you about this issue just a few weeks ago, here, but now I see there is another story on their on-going struggle to co-exist in Minnesota.

From an AP story at the Daily Reporter:

MINNEAPOLIS — Longtime American Indian residents in a poor Minneapolis neighborhood and some of their new neighbors from Somalia are struggling to get along. A handful of alleged attacks against women and elders by young people from both communities haven’t helped.

But some residents, American Indian and Somali, are trying their best to tamp down the violence and learn to live with one another, Minnesota Public Radio reported Wednesday.

Franklin Avenue in the Phillips neighborhood had long been the heart of Indian Country in Minneapolis. But the early 1990s* drew Somali refugees to Phillips in search of cheap rent and storefronts where they could open convenience stores and halal meat shops.

[continued here]

I probably get more questions on the issue I’ve hi-lighted above than on any other issue relating to Somalis—where does the money come from to open all the shops when existing residents couldn’t make a go of shops in the same neighborhood?  My guess is three fold—micro-loans probably through shariah banking to Muslims,  the lucrative food stamp “business” and the money transfer business (money flowing to Africa and the Middle East from the shops).  I’m looking for people to confirm my suspicions!

*For new readers: We have admitted well over 100,000 Somali refugees to the US.   To check out the numbers visit this post, one of our most widely read posts over the last few years.   In FY2010 which ended September 30th the US State Department resettled 4,884 Somalis (here) to towns near you. BTW, this statistics website appears to be not publishing the numbers for 2011.  I wonder why?

Also, after being closed for nearly two years, the US State Department is on the verge of resuming the fraud-ridden family reunification program that admitted as many as 36,000 Somalis fraudulently to the US between 2003 and 2008.  See the latest on new regulations, here.  The State Department is on the verge of re-opening the program and may already have done so

No. Africa, Europe and the Middle East: Refugee roundup

As the destabilization of Africa and the Middle East continues thanks to “rebels” most likely under the umbrella of the Muslim Brotherhood (they are not ‘democracy’ advocates in the way Americans are being told), here is a roundup of news this morning:

* Eritreans shot by Egyptian military trying to get into Israel, many imprisoned in Egypt, here.

* Malta asks for “temporary protection” mechanism to be activated by the EU, here.  Catholic agency in Malta trying to raise funds for refugees, here.

* Political turmoil in Syria and Jordan put Iraqi refugees who fled to those countries in danger again, here.

* EU migration head wants European countries to come up with more money for N. African refugees, here.

* Palestinians danced when Mubarak government fell in Egypt because they expect Egypt to now open the border, here (which they of course  hope will be Israel’s undoing).

* Russians say Berlusconi will kick refugees off Italian island of Lampedusa, here.

More later I’m sure…..

Gates of Vienna: The Rhine is freezing…

Last night I was discussing my post about Malta and about the invasion of Italian islands by hundreds, thousands, of immigrants flooding out of North Africa with my friend Richard at Blue Ridge Forum.  I wondered aloud if the Romans knew the empire was falling before it finally did.   Did they see it coming?

I see, thanks to Richard, that others are thinking the same horrible thoughts—two days ago from Baron Bodissey at Gates of Vienna:

The fall of the Roman Empire was not a sudden event.

The imperial power wielded by Rome decreased gradually over the course of centuries, during which time a steady deterioration was punctuated by repeated barbarian incursions and the sacking of cities. The reach of the empire shrank by fits and starts until it was overthrown entirely and replaced by kingdoms ruled by the Germanic invaders.

In his address to the Magna Carta Foundation in Rome on Friday night, Geert Wilders referred to a significant event during the course of the fall of Rome: the freezing of the Rhine on December 31st, 406. This allowed thousands of Germanic invaders to cross the frozen river and overrun Gaul, after which they were well-positioned to invade the Italian peninsula and sack Rome itself just a few years later.

Mr. Wilders finds a parallel to these events in the current decline of Western Civilization. He notes that modern-day barbarians — immigrants from the Islamic world — are anticipating the equivalent of the freezing of the Rhine, after which they will be able to overrun and sack the copious riches of an all-but-moribund Europe.

[….]

This has been the winter of Arab discontent, and as a result of the recent upheavals in North Africa and the Middle East, the metaphorical Rhine may finally have frozen over. Instead of a river, the barbarian invaders are crossing the Mediterranean Sea. Instead of walking, they are cramming themselves into rickety boats and crossing over into Italian territory.

Please read Baron’s whole treatise, and then this from the concluding paragraphs:

The Rhine is beginning to freeze.

The PC-MC impulse is widespread and deeply embedded in Europe. It will take catastrophic circumstances to dislodge it, but a great slow-motion catastrophe is even now unfolding.

Is America far behind?

Poor Malta, here they come!

Only yesterday I reported that Malta’s Prime Minister, Laurence Gonzi, said NOOOO! to taking more African immigrants from Libya or Tunisia.  I also reported that thousands are arriving on Italian islands (here).  Now, hat tip: Charles, we see that two boats packed (packed shoulder to shoulder!) arrived in Malta today with 500 Somalis and Eritreans aboard.

From the Times of Malta:

Two boats carrying some 500 Somali and Eritrean immigrants from Libya entered Malta this afternoon.

The first boat arrived in Dahlet Qorrot, the second at Haywharf at around 5.30 a.m. The Gozo boat was also escorted to Haywharf where it arrived at around 7.30 p.m.

The arrivals were the first in Malta this year and since the conflict between rebels and Gaddafi forces in Libya.

You must watch the film clip of one of the boats being brought in to dock that accompanies the story!  I hate to keep mentioning it, but if you read the almost four decades old French novel, The Camp of the Saints, you have already seen these packed boats in your mind’s eye.

Oh, and one more thing, although the news account says there were women and children aboard, it sure looks like a lot of young men to me.
