Canada fighting tooth and nail to rescind decision on granting white South African asylum

We told you about the initial decision here last October to give refugee status in Canada to a white South African, Brandon Huntley, because Huntley claimed he faced persecution in the ‘rainbow’ Nation because he is white.   In light of recent events in South Africa (detailed here at Atlas Shrugs) I believe it is going to be increasingly difficult for Canada to now renege on its earlier decision on Huntley.  If they send him back now he is a dead man.

You can tell they are scared as hell that “white people” could be the subjects of racial persecution anywhere in the world because that would really turn the tables on the worldview of the Leftwing lovers of the 1951 UN Convention on Refugees.  I raised the specter here just last week.

This is from the Times last weekend:

The 31-year-old made international headlines in August when the Canadian immigration board granted him refugee status after it found him to be a victim of crime, genocide and affirmative action back home.

Huntley – a Cape Town-born martial arts fanatic – was declared a refugee after claiming he had been robbed, and stabbed seven times by attackers, who had called him a “white dog” and a “settler”.

Following a massive backlash, the Canadian government announced it would go to court to seek a review of the decision.

On Wednesday, the federal court in Toronto was set to hear an application by the country’s minister of immigration, Jason Kenney, for a review of this “plainly wrong” decision.

Lawyers spent the morning arguing a procedural issue as Huntley, in papers before the court, suggested the Canadians wanted a review of his case purely due to political pressure from South Africa.

“It is clear to objective observers that the applicant’s motives in commencing this judicial review were purely political and in reaction to complaints by the South African government,” Huntley’s lawyer argued in papers before the court.

Kenney, however, rubbished Huntley’s claims, accusing him of going on a “fishing expedition”.

The minister noted that the South African’s reasons for seeking a review were not the subject of the court matter.

“It is worth remembering that the reasonableness of the board’s decision is what is at issue in this judicial review application,” Kenney said.

A spokesman for the Canadian department of immigration told the Sunday Times that there were several reasons why Kenney was challenging the decision.

“The board’s decision contained several errors, including an error in its finding that Mr Huntley did not have access to state protection and an error in equating random acts of violence that Mr Huntley claimed to have experienced with persecution due to his race,” she said.

In addition to the white flight from South Africa, I envision the day when Europeans (Danes, Swedes, Brits and others) will attempt to follow Huntley to Canada or the US using the 1951 Convention on refugees to escape the Islamification of Europe.

Canada rolls out the “unwelcome” mat

Thanks to reader “Truth Serum” we see that Canada is indeed planning to revamp its asylum program by listing countries from which asylum seekers will have little luck proving they were persecuted.  I mentioned the proposal here recently.

From the Ottawa Sun:

OTTAWA — The Conservative government is set to roll out the unwelcome mat to the annual stampede of bogus refugee claimants trying to jump the immigration line.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney is expected to unveil plans Tuesday aimed at identifying fake claimants and giving them the boot a lot more efficiently than at present.

A senior federal official confirms Kenney will announce a new list of “safe” countries least likely to be persecuting anyone.

Anyone claiming refugee status from one of those countries would be put into a kind of immigration express lane — faster decisions, quicker evictions.

I can see a looming problem with this approach.   I’ll tell you about it in my next post.

Meanwhile they do have a problem in Canada! (I’m not saying we don’t!)

The latest immigration statistics show that last year, just over 33,000 people made refugee claims in this country.

The vast majority of those either claimed refugee status at the border, or were already in the country on visas as students, temporary workers or visitors.

Statistically, over 19,000 of those claims — roughly 58% — will be deemed bogus, and the claimants ordered out of the country.

The problem is, all that could take years, and even then there is no guarantee those turfed out of Canada actually leave.

Over 40,000 deportees are currently missing.

Read it all.  By the way, the same thing happened here with Obama’s Aunt Zeituni who had been ordered deported but had melted back into a Boston neighborhood where she was found by some AP reporter in 2008.

Canadian Parliament to consider upping the refugee numbers to Canada

What I found most interesting about this short news story is that in Canada the Parliament actually votes on the number of refugees.  In the US, the President sends a “determination letter” to Congress, but Congress doesn’t vote.  It is merely a courtesy gesture.

OTTAWA — Immigration Minister Jason Kenney on Monday proposed expanding Canada’s refugee program starting with the resettlement of 2,500 more people living in refugee camps and urban slums.

Canada would welcome as many as 14,500 refugees annually, or 2,500 more annually, once the proposal is passed by parliament.

[….]

Countries with refugee resettlement programs, including Canada, resettle about 100,000 refugees from abroad each year.

New readers should know that the US’s share of 100,000 refugees is 70,000-80,000.

Canada: Rumors about refugee resettlement reform

Things sure are hopping in Canada these days. Check our Canada category for a whole series of recent articles on immigrant problems north of the border.  Here is a story that says that Canadian officials are planning to reform the refugee program there and one rumor is that Canada would list safe countries from which refugees and asylum seekers would be ineligible to come to Canada from — in other words countries where persecution is not rampant.

UNHCR head honcho Guterres* is there to try to get Canadian minds right on the issue.

From the Toronto Sun:

OTTAWA – The world’s top official for refugees gave his cautious approval Wednesday for a controversial approach the federal Tories are rumoured to be considering to reform Canada’s asylum system.

Antonio Guterres, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, is in Ottawa for two days to meet with government officials and non-governmental organizations. His visit comes as Immigration Minister Jason Kenney is promising to table a package of reforms to Canada’s refugee asylum system, which can take up to six years to get a final decision. Guterres says he will be discussing the potential reforms with officials.

One of the rumoured reforms is a list of safe countries from which no one could apply for refugee status. Refugee advocates say limiting access isn’t fair because all claimants deserve a hearing.

Guterres said the list can work if the countries are properly classified and if the system is open to the idea people can be persecuted in democratic countries. He pointed to democracies in Africa where women face genital mutilation or countries where there’s no protection for gays and lesbians.

“Even if the country could be considered a safe country of origin, it is important leave the door open to serious consideration of protection claims,” Guterres said.

I see a potential problem with such a list too.  Someday Swedes, Norwegians, Dutch and even Brits might want to escape persecution and come as refugees to Canada or the US as their countries are taken over by the Marxists and Muslims.

Reforms we expect to see in the US look like they are all going to revolve around more money, give us more money, we need more of your money!

*Geez!  Someone told me the other day that Guterres was some bigwig Socialist so I thought I would look him up, sure enough he is, check out his bio here.  He was having cocktails at the Washington “celebration” I attended a week ago, but I didn’t hang around to schmooze.  Seems anyone who is anyone these days is a Socialist!

Canada: Somalis want justice for gang killings, huh?

Here we go—more Somali violence news from Canada.  29 Somali men have been killed recently in Alberta, Canada and it is believed their deaths are related to drug and gang violence, but the families want “justice.”   Justice from whom?  Check out this CBC story and note the large number of comments generated about this issue of “justice.”

Then today in the Globe and Mail we learn that Somalis are demanding a task force to look into the killings.

There are a huge number of comments there too.  I don’t have time to read them, but I will bet many suggest that the Somali community look within itself for answers and cast no aspersions on Canada that gave them a home.
