Another 50,000 wannabe migrants to US learned if they won the lottery to America this week

I’ve concluded that I need to start writing more about other ways legal immigrants get to the US from Islamic terror-producing parts of the world.
This week tens of thousands learned whether they won the “diversity visa lottery” (aka green card lottery) and will soon be on the way to your town.

Overlooked by most everyone is this insane lottery set up with the premise that the US is lacking in diversity and needs more of it!

Previously, I wrote about the ‘Diversity Visa Lottery’ (see category here) a lot, but it has fallen off my radar screen as the UN/US Refugee Admissions Program has drawn so much attention.

The WaPo tells us that Trump has not mentioned the Diversity Visa Lottery. Has any staff member told him about it?

Frankly I’ve been disappointed that no other private citizen investigators have taken up the cause of writing about this program, or about Temporary Protected Status, or Immigrant Food Stamp/welfare fraud.  Those are all areas where someone should write exclusively on the topic!
Goodness knows there is enough material to keep someone going daily on just one of those topics.
Here the Washington Post tells us that earlier this week the new ‘winners’ were announced.  By the way, refugee numbers do not count when determining ineligible countries, so we take lottery applicants from Cuba, Iraq, Burma, and Iran to name just a few.
WaPo (at The Denver Post):

On Tuesday, more than 14 million anxious people around the world will begin checking computers and smartphones in one of the strangest rituals of the U.S. immigration system. When the clock strikes noon in Washington, they will be able to visit a State Department website, enter their names, years of birth and 16-digit identification numbers. Then they will press “submit” to learn whether they have won one of the world’s most coveted contests: the U.S. green card lottery.

Each year, the Diversity Visa Lottery, as it is officially known, provides up to 55,000 randomly selected foreigners – fewer than 1 percent of those who enter the drawing – with permanent residency in the United States.

I learned something I didn’t know! Mohammad Atta tried twice to win the lottery, but ultimately got in (as sadly we know) using another legal visa.

The current lottery coincides with an intense debate over immigration and comes amid policy changes that have made the country less welcoming to new arrivals. President Donald Trump has cracked down on illegal immigration and pressed forward with plans to build a wall along the border with Mexico. He has issued executive orders targeting foreign workers, refugees and travelers from certain majority-Muslim countries.

But he hasn’t said a word about the green card lottery.

Its days may be numbered, nonetheless. The lottery appears to conflict with the president’s call for a “merit-based” immigration system. And at least two bills in the Republican-controlled Congress seek to eliminate the program.

“The Diversity Lottery is plagued with fraud, advances no economic or humanitarian interest, and does not even deliver the diversity of its namesake,” according to a news release from Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., a co-sponsor of one of the bills.

Just what we need, 50,000 people annually, some with barely a high school education, and with spouses and families along for the ride!

The lottery’s premise is simple. It’s not connected to employment or family members in the United States. Instead, the only requirement is that entrants be adults with a high school diploma or two years of work experience. Winners can bring spouses and children. Citizens of countries that have sent 50,000 people to the United States in the past five years – such as Canada, China, India, Nigeria and Mexico – are ineligible to participate.

The lottery, which was launched in its present form in 1995, is especially beloved in Eastern Europe and Africa. In recent years, the two regions have accounted for more than two-thirds of lottery winners. In Liberia and other West African countries, nearly 10 percent of the population applies each year.

[….]

The program – operated from a consular center in Williamsburg, Kentucky [Mitch McConnell country!—ed] – has been on the chopping block before. It came under attack in 2002 after an Egyptian terrorist who killed two people in Los Angeles was found to be in the United States through his wife’s diversity visa. Mohamed Atta, another Egyptian and one of the 9/11 suicide pilots, had entered the lottery twice before entering the United States on a different visa to study aviation.

“If you’re a terrorist organization and you can get a few hundred people to apply to this from several countries . . . odds are you’d get one or two of them picked,” Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., told The Washington Post in 2011 after introducing an ill-fated bill to kill the program.

I couldn’t find a list of the numbers (selected for 2018) from each country, but here are the countries eligible to participate in 2018 from Africa and Asia.

What should Trump do about refugees on January 21, 2017

It is not unprecedented to reduce refugee numbers dramatically, we did it following 9/11! By Inauguration Day 2017 we will already be at 35,000 for the fiscal year!

Donald J. Trump will be inaugurated on the 20th of January as our 45th President.  Many of you worked very hard to make it happen. He said he will stop the flow of Syrian (majority Muslim) refugees to your towns and cities and at minimum we expect him to do that!

But, reducing the numbers is not enough, he must demand the repeal of the Refugee Act of 1980.  The system as constructed is rotten to the core and I no longer believe it can be reformed.

us-chamber-donohue-ap-640x480
This isn’t just an ideological battle between ‘do-gooders’ on the Left and ‘haters’ in the conservative grassroots, but a third player is the Chamber of Commerce which will fight tooth and nail to buck Trump. They want the cheap immigrant labor! Tom Donohue, friend of Paul Ryan, here: http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2015/10/12/chris-wallace-establishment-business-groups-ready-to-primary-conservatives-if-they-dont-play-ball-with-paul-ryan/

A simple reduction in numbers, that has been suggested by some in the immigration control movement, is not adequate.  If it is deemed in the national interest to resettle third worlders in America going forward, an entirely new program must be constructed by Congress.
In my view, there are three issues that must be addressed in a White House and Congressional review and they are:  1) National security concerns, 2) the VOLAG system where non-profits are paid by the head (out of the US Treasury) to resettle refugees chosen by the UN, 3) lack of transparency (the outrageous secrecy by VOLAGs and the feds involved in choosing target towns).   There may be others I can’t think of at the moment.

So as we knew, and as a Newsweek article yesterday confirmed, on January 21st, Donald Trump can turn off the spigot of refugees flowing in to the US and tell Congress if they want a refugee program to get to work and come up with a new one!

He can hold the hammer over their heads by turning off the flow!

But! He will have to battle the major corporations and the US Chamber of Commerce looking for a plentiful supply of CHEAP LABOR.

As much as some want to frame it this way—as a battle between two major forces of Democrat Left wing open borders ‘humanitarian’ activists on one side and Republican Right wing believers in tightly controlled immigration on the other, there is a third player with enormous power—BIG business and US Chamber of Commerce lobbyists always on the hunt for CHEAP (some say captive, compliant) LABOR!
Trump will have to battle Republican Congressional leaders who follow the lead of their industry friends!
That (above) is my main point, for those who want to wade into the numbers weeds, here is what I’ve been looking at this morning.

What do the numbers look like now?

Using data provided by the Refugee Processing Center, we have admitted 12,272 refugees of all stripes between the beginning of the 2017 fiscal year (October 1, 2016) and election day (November, 8, 2016).  This rate (319 a day) is higher than anything we have seen in the last ten years (see chart in this post).
If that rate continues until Inauguration Day on January 20th, 2017, then we will have admitted over 35,000 refugees in just over 3 1/2 months, more than we brought in 2002 and 2003.  Obama wants 110,000 for the entire fiscal year (319 a day would bring the total over 110,000).
However, it is not unprecedented to dramatically reduce numbers. See here that in the two years following 9/11 we admitted less than 30,000 refugees for each year 2002 and 2003!
So where would the greatest impact be if the spigot were closed on January 21st? On the contractors of course. They will have to close some offices, not open new ones, reduce staff and overhead, and gee maybe even reduce the excessively large salaries their CEOs are getting.  Of course they will scream bloody murder and say how mean Trump is by leaving refugees in the pipeline.
By the way, if you like to do research, check USASpending.gov in the coming weeks and see if the federal agencies—US State Department and Health and Human Services—are pouring excessively large amounts of grant money into the coffers of the nine major contractors before Obama leaves office.
More numbers….
When I checked the data this morning, I see that the following numbers have been admitted from Muslim sending countries (from October 1 to November 8):
Iraq (1,635)
Somalia (1,684)
Syria (1,602)
Smaller numbers come from places like Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. Keep an eye on Burma because originally we resettled mostly Christian Burmese, but Burmese Muslim (Rohingya) numbers are ticking up (269 since Oct. 1).
One final note:  The UN/US State Department Refugee Admissions Program is only one program of many LEGAL immigration programs admitting large numbers of Muslims and others from the third world.  I previously wrote about the Diversity Visa Lottery which admits another 50,000 migrants to America via a lottery system each year because we need more diversity (!).  I hardly see it mentioned, so I need to start writing about it again because we have the best chance ever now to review and possibly throw out programs which are detrimental to American workers and our communities.
The Republicans previously have tried to stop the Diversity Visa lottery (some call it the Green Card lottery) and I don’t know why they have shut up about it.

Obama extends Temporary Protected Status for Somalis, confusion evident in media reports

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is one more of those LEGAL immigration programs that needs to be completely reformed or dumped altogether.  It might sound good on the surface.  Of course we can’t send nationals of certain countries home to a devastated country, they should get to stay for 18 months until their country improves is how the logic goes.
US CISHowever, here is the rub—they never go home!  Every 18 months the federal government gives them another extension!  Look at wikipedia here where we learn that a 2001 earthquake in El Salvador is responsible for permission for over 100,000 Salvadorans already (illegally? on tourist or student visas?) in the US to file for TPS.  Honduras is even worse, ‘temporary’ status has been regularly extended since 1998! Somalia longer still!
Can’t just blame Obama!
Some years ago when Bush did one of those Central American TPS extensions he literally said we need to keep them here so they could prop up their home country’s economy by sending remittance money back home!  That means taking money out of the US economy! Right! The Bush Administration surely extended Somali TPS several times.
When Obama extended TPS status for Somalis that is only for a relatively small number who have been here for a very long time.  Al Jazeera tells us this:

Some 355,000 people total hold temporary protected status, with El Salvadorians making up more than half of those. The government regularly extends TPS for some nationalities, sometimes for decades. An estimated 270 Somalis have held their TPS designation continuously since 1991.

Somali TPS holders though are a drop in the bucket compared to the nearly 10,000 Somalis entering the US annually through the permanent Refugee Resettlement Program.

By the way, Al Jazerra also tells us that there are 10,000 Syrians in the US eligible for TPS and they are not rushing to make themselves known to the government.
TPS is really an excuse to give work permits and legal permission to stay in the US forever (waiting for amnesty of course!), but it is not supposed to be a path to citizenship (you can bet many TPS holders are voting anyway!).  Refugees, on the other hand, who are here to stay no matter what, are given permanent resident status and ultimately citizenship.
See Katie Pavlich writing at Townhall yesterday.  She blurs the lines between the two LEGAL immigration programs, but who can blame her, our LEGAL immigration system is a chaotic mess.

Outside of the investor visas, student visas, and worker visas, the three big LEGAL programs that admit (or permit legal presence) are the Refugee Resettlement/Asylum Program, the Diversity Visa Lottery and Temporary Protected Status—all must be reformed or abolished!

So, the next time some candidate for office (or some other know-it-all) says that “illegal immigration is bad, but legal is good,” tell them they don’t know what the hell they are talking about!

Trump improves immigration score at NumbersUSA, but Diversity Visa Lottery opposition should be no-brainer for all Republicans

Trump still trails Santorum and Walker.
There has been much controversy surrounding recent statements by Presidential candidate Donald Trump regarding his position on a pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens, but it seems his team has worked to clarify recent statesments over the last day or so.  Here is Roy Beck at NumbersUSA last evening on Trump’s score (now a C +) at their all-important ‘Worker-Protection Immigration Grade Cards.’

Bring up that score instantly! Roy Beck’s phone should ring off the hook today with candidates reporting that they support ending the Visa Lottery!

This is Beck’s clarification:

After a lot of criticism over the weekend of his recent remarks about letting the “good” illegal aliens stay, Donald Trump has gone on national media to clarify his remarks about amnesty — a bit. There is still a lot of confusion about the details of his stance, and it is likely that he has not yet thought about those policy details.

On the basis of the new details he has provided in the last two days, NumbersUSA is changing his amnesty rating from HARMFUL to MIXED on our Worker-Protection Immigration Grade Cards. (See all ratings and grades for 21 Presidential Hopefuls at: www. NumbersUSA.com/2016

With that change and the ratings he has on the other nine immigration categories, Trump has raised his overall grade to a C+, which again puts him in the No. 3 spot among all 21 Presidential Hopefuls of both Parties.

(Rick Santorum earns an A grade, and Scott Walker earns a B-minus as the only Hopefuls whose policy stances on 10 immigration issues are more positive toward American workers and their families.)

Many thanks to all of you Trump supporters who sent messages in one way or another to the Trump campaign to improve what he was saying about legalizing illegal aliens. This is what supporters of every candidate ought to be doing. We provide contact information on each candidate. Just click on the photos on www.NumbersUSA.com/2016.

Again, the scorecard is here.

Diversity Visa Lottery is an abomination!

The last issue on the card is “End Visa Lottery.”   Of all the candidates, only former Senator Rick Santorum understands enough to flat out oppose it.

Think about it, we admit on average 50,000 LEGAL immigrants a year through a lottery system!  An [expletive deleted] lottery!

I explained the lottery (also sometimes referred to as the ‘green card lottery’) in some detail here back in May when it was learned that there is some fear of terrorism rearing its head in the mostly Muslim Uzbek community in New York.  A large number of those Uzbeks won the lottery.
Demonstrating that some in Washington know that the lottery is an abomination, ten years ago the House voted to kill it, but the Senate never acted:

In December 2005, the United States House of Representatives voted 273–148 to add an amendment to the border enforcement bill H.R. 4437 abolishing the DV. Opponents of the lottery said it was susceptible to fraud and was a way for terrorists to enter the country. The Senate never passed the bill.

The express purpose of Senator Ted Kennedy’s lottery is to add diversity to America!  Every Republican candidate should call NumbersUSA right now and say they flat-out oppose the lottery!

Legal immigrants to America should be chosen based on what they would contribute to America, not because we don’t have enough of their particular ethnicity here!

P.S. Note to Beck! Reform (or stop altogether!) Refugee Resettlement Program should be a new scorecard category.
Related update!  Please read this important article by Mickey Kaus (mentions Trump) but most importantly informs us that Kaus is re-thinking his earlier view of legal immigration and beginning to see Ann Coulter’s important point—all immigration must be curtailed at least for now.

Africans fastest growing immigrant group in America

So says The Economist in an article entitled: ‘Building Afromerica.’

dadaab-refugee-camp-aid-d-007
Refugees at the UN camp (Dadaab) in Kenya where many US-bound refugees are processed.

This is an article meant to put your mind at ease by suggesting that a large percentage of the Africans arriving in America are well-educated and live in the suburbs when they get here, thus not adding to inner-city poverty.
We don’t believe that is the case for the refugee portion of the flow (so far!).
However, if Obama gets his way, more will be in suburban towns, see here (educated, or not! impoverished, or not!).
I’m posting this because it includes a statistic I was interested to see—the percentage of legal Africans arriving as refugees and those arriving via the Diversity Visa Lottery.
If you don’t know about the so-called ‘Green Card Lottery’ you need to learn about it!
The Economist:

Relatively few Africans are illegal immigrants (those who are have almost all overstayed their visas). Instead, they have particularly benefited from the Refugee Act of 1980, which brought more refugees to America, and the Immigration Act of 1990, which created special diversity visas, issued by lottery, for people from under-represented countries. According to analysis by the Pew Research Centre, 28% of legal African immigrants who arrived between 2000 and 2013 came as refugees; 19% of them arrived on diversity visas. For all legal immigrants, the equivalent figures were 13% and 4%.

We learned in the first year of writing this blog that one reason the refugee resettlement program shifted to include large numbers of Africans was revealed in a 2007 report:

According to Heidi Boas in her lengthy 2007 paper entitled, “The New Face of America’s Refugees: African Refugee Resettlement to the United States:”

….several of the individuals interviewed for this paper identified the Congressional Black Caucus as one of the most influential groups advocating over the past decade for increased African refugee resettlement to the United States.

Back to The Economist…..
So what legal programs admit the other 47% of Africans? I would like to know!
Then there is this….

African migrants stand out from American-born blacks. Indeed, on most measures, they have little in common but their colour.

And, that is why there are conflicts when Somalis especially are resettled by federal contractors into African-American neighborhoods naively assuming (we can only guess) that since they are the same color they should all just love each other!  Not!
