As I mentioned yesterday, this story from Liberal, KS about the murder of a Somali refugee by an African American at the National Beef plant there is a month old. Yet over the last two days it has taken off with readers apparently mostly on facebook.
Does anyone see any additional news on the story that might have set this post on fire?
‘Pungentpeppers’ reports that there was a settlement there on Friday in which National Beef agreed to pay compensation in a class action lawsuit, but it has no apparent connection to the murder or to the large number of Somali and other refugees employed in Liberal.
For new readers, we write about these meatpacking plants frequently because their need for cheap immigrant labor is one of the drivers of the refugee program. Our so-called ‘religious’ resettlement contractors work closely with them in key states besides Kansas—Kentucky, Iowa, Nebraska, North Carolina, and Colorado all come to mind. Type ‘meatpackers’ into our search function and learn more about how these plants are changing the face of rural America (here is just one post you must read).
And, by the way, Senator Jeff Sessions called out BIG MEAT as one of the chief pushers of the Gang of Eight Amnesty bill, here.
You might also search RRW for ‘Kansas’ as we have written extensively on how refugees are destabilizing communities there.
There is nothing earth-shattering in this Dallas News story. In fact I’m posting it to show new readers how reporters just lap up refugee none-news put out from the refugee PR machine and translate it into a warm and fuzzy story (the only thing missing in this one is the ‘refugees see first snow!’ but of course this is Dallas). If you are a new reader and/or from Texas you might find this enlightening.
However, reporters such as this one—Dianne Solis—never go beyond the surface and ask questions like how much is this costing US and Texas taxpayers because Catholic Charities is largely funded by your tax dollars? Or, are there Texans who need these jobs? (Does Catholic Charities also help poor Texans find work?) Or, are the Dallas schools struggling with the influx of so many diverse immigrants? Or, how much welfare do the refugees receive even after they reach that mythical goal of self-sufficiency? (See our fact sheet for the welfare goodies) etc.
Mohammad Farah, Catholic Charities of Dallas, trains refugees for job placement. http://www.catholiccharitiesdallas.org/category/employee-stories/
Mohammed Farah shares his story as a refugee from war-ravaged Somalia to a class of fresh arrivals. [Message: Mohammed hung in there and now works for Catholic Charities of Dallas!—ed]
Dallas and Texas generally top the list of US State Department targets for resettlement:
Today, now working as the refugee resettlement program manager for the nonprofit Catholic Charities, the 51-year-old Farah coaches others on the art of resurrection. And the demand is growing — Texas has led the nation for the last four years in refugee resettlements, and Catholic Charities in Dallas last year handled about 725 cases, or about 10 percent of the state’s total.
During the recent two-day orientation, Farah spoke to about two dozen refugees, ranging from Iraqi engineers to Burmese farmers.
He’s blunt about what it takes to succeed: Prepare mentally for endurance in the labor market. Take any job, any wage, any shift. And smell like a flower, he says. Farah’s point on fabulous hygiene finally provokes some smiles from the serious morning crowd.
Iraqis, Burmese and Bhutanese have led the flow into Texas. Rounding out the top 10 are newcomers from Somalia, Iran, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cuba, Eritrea, Sudan and Ethiopia. [Bringing multiculturalism and democrat voters to Red Texas—ed]
Faking you out with the numbers:
“Your first job is not your lifetime job,” he says.
Many stare back glumly. One woman keeps her arms tightly folded across her chest, pressing her fingers into her biceps. [LOL! see the Dallas News photo for grumpy refugee.]
[….]
Catholic Charities of Dallas finds jobs for 98 percent of those it resettles within 180 days, says Avril Knox, the director of refugee resettlement services for the Dallas agency.
Catholic Charities is in competition with other resettlement contractors for the next batch of refugees so they are all padding their employment numbers to appear more successful than their grant-seeking competitors.
This 98% figure is bogus! It is an example of the Jonathan Gruber syndrome (government can lie to you if it advances their cause). These agencies work like heck to get refugees signed up for any job just as their reporting numbers are due into the feds. It doesn’t matter if the refugee quits or is fired the next week. What matters is if he or she is employed on reporting day!
And the Dallas Newsstory wraps up with this instead of an account of the ‘first-snow’ thrill. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve seen this—refugee kid wants to be a doctor:
His enthusiasm hits home for one 13-year-old Iraqi girl, who fled with her family to the U.S. She says she’s eager to start school and mathematics classes.
“I want to be a doctor because I like to help sick people,” she said.
Read it all, and if you live in Texas you need to really start digging into the facts and exposing them—start a website on Texas LEGAL immigration news. You have a big fat target on your state!
BTW, Catholic Charities of Dallas was also involved in the Unaccompanied Alien Children mess this summer.
The next time one of your friends (or a politician) says, ‘I oppose illegal immigration, but am all for LEGAL immigration’ tell them they don’t know what they are talking about! Legal immigration has been so perverted by federal programs such as Temporary Protected Status (TPS)to make the word legal meaningless.
Once TPS is granted for a country, those here from that country NEVER go home. It is NOT temporary.
(Obama had already signed a short delay in the departure of West Africans, here.)
Not unexpectedly, however, an official request has been filed with the White House for a TPS (temporary refugee!) designation for citizens of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone which means that anyone in the US now (legally or illegally) from those three countries will not be required to leave.
The Ebola crisis could end next month and those granted TPS will be here for life (waiting for amnesty of course).
In Boston, Liberian human rights activist, Rev. Torli H. Krua said western countries must stop Ebola hysteria and save West Africans.
Boston, Massachusett – YOUNG-Africa Inc. on November 3, 2014 filed a petition seeking temporary protection for citizens of Ebola ravaged West African countries of Guinea, Liberia & Sierra Leone stranded in the United States. The petition filed at the White House, Washington, DC. called on President Barack Obama to immediately designate Guinea, Liberia & Sierra Leone as countries appropriate for Temporary Protected Status (TPS/DED).
The petition comes at a time when the Northeast United States experienced its first snowstorm that threatened the lives of individuals and families without adequate access to food, winter clothing and shelter.
Consistent with humanitarian norms of civilized societies, TPS/DED is a provision of the Immigration Act of 1990 (IMMACT), P.L. 101-649, established by the United States Congress to provide temporary work permits for immigrants in the United States who are temporarily unable to return to their home country because of ongoing armed conflict, an environmental disaster, or extraordinary and temporary conditions. Countries currently designated for TPS include: Syria, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Haiti.
Clearly, the worst Ebola epidemic in the world ravaging West Africa and the impending harsh winter weather present a clear and present danger for West Africans stranded in America because of Ebola making the designation of TPS/DED a necessity. Speaking in Boston, Massachusetts on the occasion of the filing of the petition for TPS/DED, Liberian human rights activist, Rev. Torli H. Krua frowned on ignorant politicians who fan the flames of fear and discrimination by ignoring scientific facts about Ebola. “Rising Ebola fear, discrimination and hysteria sweeping across western countries are unnecessary, unjustifiable and counterproductive in the battle against Ebola.
By the way, Liberians already on TPS were supposed to be deported long ago, but politicians like Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island, responding to pressure from Liberian lobbyists, keep them here with continued legal maneuvering. A new TPS designation now, due to fears that they will get Ebola if they go HOME, will give them the reprieve for years to come (as they wait for amnesty).
For more on TPS, see our archives here. Those on TPS are considered temporary refugees and can work, get drivers licenses, and receive benefits just like other refugees. The only thing they can’t do is vote, and they are probably doing that anyway!
Snake River Gorge Idaho (http://www.strengthinperspective.com/Pictures-USA/Idaho-23/MagicValley.html)
OK? Has there been an Ebola scare in Idaho I missed?
Is the purpose of this news story (based on a press release from a resettlement contractor) the result of a real problem of “hostility” toward refugees in the Twin Falls, Idaho area, or was it meant to head any “hostility” off-at-the-pass before anyone gets an idea to be hostile?
Whatever happened to Idaho’s Uzbek refugee alleged terrorist?
The story at KMVT (Fox 14, Sun Valley) caught my attention this morning and led me down a winding trail of trying to figure out exactly why there is a refugee contractor with the name—College of Southern Idaho Refugee Center (CSIRC or P for Program). Why is a college involved in this?
I haven’t written much about Idaho over the years, but here is our archive of what we have.
Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV ) – The South Central Public Health District and the College of Southern Idaho Refugee CenterDirector are speaking out after concerns have been raised over refugees arriving from West Africa.
In a news release, Logan Hudson with the Health District and Ron Black with CSI said, “Refugees come to the Magic Valley area in search of a new life, but right now some are being met with hostility and concern due to stigma from the Ebola outbreaks in West Africa.”
“None of our refugees are from West Africa; they are no more likely to have Ebola than anyone else living in this area. Every refugee goes through several rigorous medical screenings before they can enter into the United States,” said Ron Black, College of Southern Idaho (CSI) Refugee Center Director. “The medical screening and waiting period they go through is longer and more intense than any protocol used for ordinary travelers. Plus, most CSI refugees arrived years before the Ebola outbreak.”
Ron Black, Director of resettlement in Twin Falls: Some refugees are being met with hostility.
Stigma is happening in the Magic Valley due to several factors including myths and fears of the disease, gossip that helps spread the fear, and a lack of knowledge about how Ebola is actually spread.
[….]
This is a daunting time for everyone, especially our refugees. We ask that the community show empathyand most importantly remember that no one in this area, let alone the state of Idaho, has been diagnosed with Ebola.” said Ron Black, CSI Refugee Center Director.
Idaho is a Wilson-Fish state.
That means that the refugee program there is being run jointly between the feds and their quasi-government contractors with little state government control or oversight. Learn more about Wilson-Fish here.
The College of Southern Idaho Refugee Center is a subcontractor of the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (one of the big nine) and apparently doesn’t have a separate tax Form 990 (that I can find), so it’s hard to figure out exactly how big they are and how much of your tax dollars are flowing through it. See their history here.
The CSIRP has brought 2,500 refugees to Magic Valley providing workers to local businesses and bringing your federal tax dollars for their social services (aka welfare):
Since it’s inception, the CSIRP has resettled more than 2500 refugees from a variety of different continents; providing local businesses with a steady source of entry level workers. The Program has also brought more than $3 million of federal money and benefits back to the Magic Valley that have been used to purchase goods and services from local merchants.
I recommend if you are a reader from Idaho that you explore their website and also the Idaho Office for Refugees(NOT a state agency) which along with the federal government calls the shots in Idaho.
P.S. If anyone sees news stories about real hostility to refugees over Ebola, please send links to this blog post!
Nashua, NH mayor: Sure! Bring in more immigrant labor to compete with New Hampshire natives! https://refugeeresettlementwatch.org/2014/10/22/nashua-nh-to-take-150-new-refugees-this-year-contact-the-mayor/
If (if?) the contractors have slowed the flow to that city they have found other places such as newly “welcoming” Nashua (see our post here late last month) to send them because, once they have set up shop in a state, they have investments in office space and staff they want to protect and thus need the federal cash to keep operations running in high gear.
And, as they bring in the family members of the original “seed community” they want to place them near to their relatives.
Also, if you are a new reader, you might be interested to see that the contractors attempted to move into Dover and some other smaller cities this year, but were thwarted when elected officials there had the good sense to ask for a plan from the federally contracted agencies that would be dropping-off the refugees. See posts on Dover, here.
Here is the latest finding from CIS. 71% of the increase in the number of working-age people holding jobs went to immigrants!
The Gang of Eight immigration bill (S.744) passed last June would have roughly doubled the number of new foreign workers allowed into the country, as well as legalized illegal immigrants. Both of New Hampshire’s senators voted for it. An analysis of government data by the Center for Immigration Studies shows that since 2000, 71 percent of the net increase in the number of working-age (16 to 65) people holding a job in New Hampshire has gone to immigrants (legal and illegal) — even though the native-born accounted for 65 percent of population growth among the working-age.As a result, the share of natives holding a job in the state has declined significantly. The decline in employment has been felt primarily by natives without a college education.
[….]
Two conclusions from the state’s employment situation:
~First, the long-term decline in employment for natives in New Hampshire and the large number of working-age natives not working clearly indicates that there is no general labor shortage in the state — especially among the less educated. Thus it is very difficult to justify the large increases in foreign workers (skilled and unskilled) allowed into the country in a bill like S.744, which many of the state’s politicians support.
~Second, New Hampshire’s working-age immigrant population grew 70 percent from 2000 to 2014. Yet the number of working-age natives working in 2014 was only slightly above the number in 2000 and the share with a job actually fell. This undermines the argument that immigration on balance increases job opportunities for natives.
By the way, NH Senator Jeanne Shaheen voted for S.744 (amnesty) and she could have lifted a finger to help the mayor of Manchester but apparently did nothing. I can guarantee you that if Senator Shaheen had publicly gone to bat for the Manchester mayor in his wish for a moratorium, he would have gotten it.
