Burmese and Bhutanese refugees arrive in US in poverty, stay in poverty

We’ve written about the report from the Asian Pacific Islander Scholarship Fund previously, but thought this article about a recent briefing in Washington, DC added a few points that need to be high-lighted as well as asks the question:

Why, then, has the plight of refugees largely escaped the attention of policymakers?

I can answer the question!  When the Refugee Act of 1980 (Kennedy, Biden, Carter) was passed and signed into law, skeptics in Congress were assured we were not importing poverty and life-long users of welfare, but we have and we are.  And, more importantly anyone who points that out is immediately called a racist, xenophobic boob.  So what member of Congress would dare to open his or her mouth!

Lawmakers in Washington DC when it comes to the Refugee Resettlement Act of 1980 which has never been reviewed or reauthorized. These monkeys are not just the D’s! https://refugeeresettlementwatch.org/2014/02/11/human-rights-first-praises-ten-open-borders-republicans-who-say-bring-in-the-refugees/

The two largest groups of refugees arriving in the US in recent years are from Asia—the so-called Bhutanese (really from Nepal originally) and the Burmese.  Here is what this latest article says about the damning study and how it impacts the Maryland, Virginia, and DC region  (although really not DC so much since it resettles only a tiny handful of refugees).

From Asian Fortune:

I wonder how many lawmakers actually bothered to listen to the briefing!

In a briefing on Capitol Hill, Delegate Madeleine Bordallo (D-Guam) stated that “…an overwhelming 30% of Burmese Americans live below the poverty line, compared to 13% of the Asian population living in the United States.” Del. Bordallo iterated the need to focus on education, highlighting the fact that 39% of Burmese Americans are high school dropouts, the highest of any Asian America/Pacific Islander group.  [Remember those are the kids, the next generation!—ed]

As we have pointed out ad nauseum since 2008, it’s the meatpacking and hotel industry that presses for more LEGAL cheap immigrant labor while taxpayers subsidize the workers’ lives with welfare and pay for their criminal trials/incarceration!

Several key findings may explain the challenges refugee communities face. Limited English proficiency is a socioeconomic barrier in the refugee adaptation process, and older refugees experience the greatest difficulties in educational attainment. Indeed, older refugees typically find work in low-paying jobs in industries such as meatpacking and hotel-housekeeping that offer little or no benefits, and find it difficult to improve their socioeconomic status. Moreover, the report states that those who arrive as teens or young adults also have a more difficult time adjusting.

I love the way news accounts say they ‘find work’ as if they just watched the employment ads in a local paper.  They find work because the Refugee Resettlement CONTRACTORS act as head-hunters for BIG MEAT and BIG HOTEL!

Filipinos lobby hard for ‘temporary’ refugee status

Meeting in NYC to plan strategy to lobby US State Department. DENNIS CLEMENTE/INQUIRER.net US Bureau

It just takes one big storm, like Typhoon Haiyan, to get the engines going in the open borders lobby to seek Temporary Protected Status for anyone from that country who happened to have a foot in the US door already—a legal or an illegal foot.

The problem with TPS is that the “temporary” refugees never go home!  How do you think we happen to have a couple hundred thousand Salvadorans here!   And, they are all waiting for Comprehensive Immigration Reform to become law!

After a two hour panel session on the topic in NYC, the ‘advocates’ for TPS designation for Filipinos set their sites on a letter writing campaign to Secretary of State John Kerry and Asst. Sec. of State for Population, Refugees and Migration Anne Richard.  They don’t seem to know that it is the Dept. of Homeland Security that makes the final call.

From Global Nation Inquirer:

NEW YORK—Getting Temporary Protected Status (TPS) granted for the Philippines now depends on a letter-writing campaign addressed to the US Secretary of State John Kerry or his assistant, Anne Richard, supporters concluded during a two-hour long panel discussion on Jan. 28 at the Philippine Consulate.

The Filipino American Legal Defense & Education Fund, Inc. (Faldef) is encouraging people to ask as many prominent individuals and organizations to sign letters that will be sent to the Secretary of State’s office.

Consul General Mariano de Leon and City Council member Dr. Eugene Matthieu called on Filipinos to work together and spread the word through Filipino-friendly messages about the need for TPS.

Why does the Philippine government care so much?  Because they will reap the windfall as Filipinos working legally in America will send “home” millions in remittances.

For more information, our archive on TPS is here.  And, check out the TPS website for the countries that have TPS now:  El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, and Syria.

Wyoming to get refugee resettlement office (they know not what they do!)

Update:  For all of the new readers coming to this post, please see all of our followups on it, here.

Alert!!!!  If you know anyone in Wyoming, please send them this story and tell them to get involved NOW!

Republican Governor Mead ASKED the federal government to open refugee resettlement in Wyoming!

Wyoming, the only state in the nation that has not actively resettled refugees in the over three decades the program has been operating, will soon be getting refugees thanks to Republican Governor Matt Mead and a Congolese refugee ***pitch man.

Will yours be the chosen town or city?  It will be if you remain silent!

***Update February 25th:  See pack of lies, here.***

From the Gillette News Record (emphasis is mine):

The governor wrote a letter in September to the federal Office of Refugee Resettlement saying Wyoming was interested in establishing a public/private center to help refugees.

The federal agency has responded that it was happy to hear of that wish and the work in progress.

Since then, state officials, University of Wyoming officials and the Lutheran Family Services-Rocky Mountain have been working to put a plan together to make it possible.

“There are some federal requirements and we are addressing those,” said Shawn Reese, the policy director in the governor’s office.

Among the decisions to be made is where that resettlement center will be located in Wyoming. University of Wyoming College of Law students will begin a study to determine the best site for that center with a conference call taking place next week to set a timeline for that work.

“They will be conducting community profiles to determine where it makes the most sense,” said Merit Thomas, who also is working on the project.  [Will your town or city be the chosen without your consultation (without your knowledge)?—ed]

They don’t know what they are talking about!  They (Lutheran Social Services) will receive some initial funding, but Wyoming will be supplying the welfare for YEARS!  Do they have any meat or chicken slaughter plants in Wyoming?  Is that what the governor wants—cheap laborers?

The center will receive federal funds.

The program provides refugees with some temporary help in finding a home and a job to get them started, but there isn’t a long period of welfare. In Bertine Bahige’s own case, it was just three months. The state also can determine how many refugees it will accept each year.  [NO IT WON’T!!!! just ask NH and TN!—ed]

“The center will happen within the next year,” Reese predicted. “We’re trying to get that hammered out.”

“Bertine (Bahige) is a huge player in this,” Thomas said.

Wyomingites must contact the Governor’s Office and get involved in this NOW!  See our fact sheet here for information on what the state is getting itself into!

How do these Republicans not understand that this is part of the Leftist plan to turn RED states BLUE because statistics show that immigrants vote for Democrats who will in turn provide them with more social services!

***Do the people of Wyoming know that the US State Department has announced plans to resettle tens of thousands of Congolese refugees over the next couple of years?

Somali fraudsters exposed in Lewiston, ME and Columbus, Ohio

The Lewiston fraud is your run-of-the-mill welfare fraud (with a little alleged forgery and some lying thrown in!) which we are becoming familiar with in the cities, like Columbus and Lewiston, that have “welcomed” diversity.  The Columbus story adds an interesting and new piece of information about the creative ways refugees are defrauding Uncle Sam.

From the Lewiston Sun Journal  (by the way, when I type ‘Lewiston fraud’ into our search bar this is what I get—lots of previous posts):

AUBURN — A Lewiston couple denied in court Thursday charges that they schemed to defraud the government out of welfare benefits over the past nine years.

Amina H. Ege, 42, of 105 Shawmut St., was indicted by an Androscoggin County grand jury on two counts of theft by deception, four counts of aggravated forgery and 12 counts of unsworn falsification. Six of the charges are felonies punishable by up to 10 years in prison. The remaining charges are misdemeanors.

Abdi A. Hassan, 43, of the same address, was indicted on two counts of theft by deception, seven counts of aggravated forgery, one count of negotiating a worthless instrument and five counts of unsworn falsification. Nine of the charges are felonies, each punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and one of the counts is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. The rest of the charges are misdemeanors.

According to court documents, the two are accused of lying about the fact that they were living together while Hassan was providing Ege with financial support. She was accused of failing to disclose that she had received a workers’ compensation settlement.

Because of those omissions, according to the indictment, Ege received more than $10,000 worth of benefits from programs such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and Section 8 housing, among others.

Who knew that the federal ‘No Child Left Behind’ program was paying Somalis to educate kids!

Mussa Farah is a spokesman for the central Ohio Somali community and on Mayor Michael B. Coleman’s Community Relations Commission.

From the Columbus Dispatch (hat tip: ‘pungentpeppers’):

Columbus City Schools are stepping up oversight of independent tutors paid for by the federal No Child Left Behind program, terminating eight contracts this school year.

The problems have ranged from students’ signatures being falsified to employees who weren’t paid, according to district documents.

Last week, the district sent a letter to Horn of Africa, a tutoring program in Linden, stating that it was rescinding its contract based on evidence that employees “falsified dates, times of attendance and student signatures on attendance forms.”

The district conducted an inspection in January of Horn of Africa and said it had found students on computers not receiving instruction, including some playing online games, according to a district report.

“No instruction taking place,” the district representative commented on the form.

Mussa Farah, who owns the service that was paid almost $83,000 in federal money during the 2009-10 school year, said an illness in his family distracted him from running the center, which he voluntarily closed after being notified recently of the problems.

Farah said that the claim that a student’s signature had been falsified came because a student who had signed in left tutoring early because of an illness.

“I never did anything wrong,” said Farah, who is a spokesman for the central Ohio Somali community and on Mayor Michael B. Coleman’s Community Relations Commission. “The decision to stop came from me. I had to fire the teachers and everyone who was there.”

Farah still operates a tutoring center for South-Western City Schools that runs on federal money.

[….]

Under federal law, parents of students whose schools are low-performing can choose to get tutoring from any provider who signs up with the state. Columbus schools paid more than $3.7 million last school year to 53 providers, Braverman said.

I’ll bet they had been laughing all the way to the bank about us dumb infidels!

Malmo, Sweden: Somali unemployment rate at 80% says Soros report

Here is news on one more of George Soros Open Society reports on how Somalis are doing in Europe.  They are doing pretty well in Sweden it seems with 80% unemployed in Malmo and 40% in Stockholm which means they are surviving quite nicely with Sweden’s famed social safety net.

Benny Carlsson Lund University: Somalis value Malmo’s low cost of living! I bet they do! http://www.lusem.lu.se/research/faculty/ekh-bca

From The Local:

The Open Society Foundation published the report as part of a broader look at the Somali diaspora in Europe. It found that 80 percent of Somalis in Sweden’s third largest city are out of work.

“Somalis are falling into a black hole in Malmö because they can’t get jobs,” report author Benny Carlsson of the Lund School of Economics and Management at Lund University told The Local. “(They don’t get) opportunities to practice Swedish and meet Swedes, and are forced to live in crowded flats.”

The situation fostered, Carlsson said, a “diminished overall sense of self-worth”.

The report said Malmö authorities were not reaching out enough with the Somali community, with new arrivals not getting enough information to help them find work.

One suggestion from the study is to get elderly Swedes to take Somalis under their wing, invite them for dinner.

There is a lot more, read it all.

Our previous reports from Soros are here (Helsinki) and here (Oslo).

I thought I had written about the professor before and sure enough, here, he was in Minnesota bragging about Sweden’s generous welfare programs!

Carlsson also cited Sweden’s social safety net which “lets people live at a decent level even if they don’t work, while the same can’t be said of the United States”.

Why work?
