SPLC urging CNN to fire Lou Dobbs over Obama Birth Certificate issue

To readers arriving here and wondering where the refugee posts are, I promise I will shortly post some refugee stories from my ever-growing queue.  It’s just that there are so many intriguing other things going on, I can’t resist mentioning them.   And, since we have mentioned the Southern Poverty Law Center (here and here) before and we have mentioned the Obama birth certificate issue here, I figured this story was not too far off topic, especially since it demonstrates Alinsky’s rule # 13* as well (Please read the Rule 13 post before proceeding!).

Screaming racism (ho hum!), the radical Leftwing SPLC has mounted a campaign to urge CNN to fire Dobbs (outspoken critic of illegal immigration) who apparently has reported on the Obama Birth Certificate controversy—you know the one that appears to be growing the longer Obama refuses to release his real original birth certificate supposedly under lock and key in Hawaii. Check out what this Delaware Congressman heard at a townhall meeting recently.

Here is what Richard Cohen, President of the SPLC is asking his followers:

July 24, 2009

Dear Friend,

Lou Dobbs is at it again.

We’ve told you about how the CNN host has used his platform to spread hateful propaganda that demonizes Latinos.

Now, Dobbs is supporting the bizarre claims of so-called “birthers” who insist that President Obama isn’t really a citizen of the United States and that his presidency, therefore, is not legitimate.

The truth about Obama’s birth in Hawaii is not in dispute. It has been verified by many reputable journalists, including CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin, who called the claims “a joke,” and even a reporter on Dobbs’ own show. Yet Dobbs continues to fan the flames.

It’s important to note that this conspiracy theory was concocted by an anti-Semite and circulated by racist extremists who cannot accept the fact that a black man has been elected president. Among those who helped disseminate the lie was the neo-Nazi who killed a security guard at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in June.

Respectable news organizations should not be peddling propaganda that supports the agenda of radical extremists who are only interested in stirring up hate and fomenting violence. But Dobbs continues to do just that. And it’s irresponsible for CNN to let him continue trading in falsehoods.

Enough is enough. Today, I’ve written to the president of CNN urging that Dobbs be removed from the air.

I encourage you to contact CNN yourself. If enough of us speak up, the network will listen.

Thank you for standing strong against hate.

Sincerely,

J. Richard Cohen
President, Southern Poverty Law Center

*All of our research on Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals” is posted in our ‘Community destabilization’ category.   Note that in both my links to the SPLC, it was rule #13 that SPLC is using to isolate individuals who oppose them.   And, in Dobbs case, although I never saw any of his news on the birth certificate issue they are simply seeking to silence any media commentators they don’t like.

P.S. You might want to follow Mr. Cohen’s lead (link above) and write to the president of CNN yourself, or use the other link Cohen has supplied, or do both!

A different kind of refugee arrives in New Hampshire

A Tea Party times ten!  That’s what you  might call this event for ‘refugees’ of big government and over regulation!    Check this out!  In a story entitled, ‘Free Staters Go Camping in New Hampshire — With Rifles, Swords and Defiance,’ we learn that  hundreds of people, feeling the time has arrived, are headed to New Hampshire and some are even moving there in an effort to carve out one place where they can be free (well sort of free) of big government.   Hat tip:  Blulitespecial.

LANCASTER, N.H. — There’s no escaping the long arm of big government — even here at the far edge of a state whose license plate decrees that without freedom from oppressive authority you might as well choose death.

But for a group of about 500 in a tent colony here, the Porcupine Freedom Festival is about as close to Libertarian Nirvana as they’re likely to get.

Held in June, the four days are about beer, burgers and bonfires. But more importantly, participants aim to carve out an enclave of less government and more liberty to do as they wish.

They aim to show a lost nation the way back to its political roots.

Please go read the whole article.  Here is one of the many things in the story that interested me, besides the fact that the movement was started by a Yalie.

Flapping overhead, on lines between spruce trees where others might dry bathing suits, Free Staters fly the Gadsden flag, with its serpent and warning to government: “Don’t Tread on Me.”

Hundreds of the Gadsden flags were handed out at our local 4th of July Tea Party.

Refugees International utters the “C” word regarding Iraq

That is “C” as in Christian Iraqi refugees.   I’ve been critical for some time of Refugees International’s near silence on persecuted Iraqi Christians while vociferously arguing for Iraqi Palestinians and other supposedly persecuted Muslims to get into the US. Incidentally who is persecuting Muslims besides other Muslims and why is everyone so chicken to mention that fact?

So, I was happy to see this blog posting by Jake Kurtzer, a lobbyist for RI, speaking up for Christians for once even if he never mentions why the Christians, who have lived in Iraq for centuries, are persecuted.

While America’s attention has shifted to the war in Afghanistan and Pakistan, recent news reports about the targeting of Christian Iraqis have turned a few eyes back towards the violence within Iraq. The targeting of Iraqi Christians portends a return to the attacks on minorities and ethnic strife that led to the massive displacement of civilians from Iraq.

He places resettlement as third in his list of three suggested action items for the Obama Administration.   Keep in mind it was only last November that RI was calling on Obama to resettle 105,500 Iraqis to the US this year!   I guess it’s dawned on them that hauling all these Iraqis here who then can’t find work and run to the newspapers to complain isn’t doing the refugee industry much good.

President Obama can convey this message by urging Al-Maliki to take a few basic steps. First and foremost, the Iraqi government must continue to improve its own response to the displacement crisis. Reports that the Iraqi government plans to close the IDP file at the end of this year indicate a desire on their part to gloss over this humanitarian emergency. This is unacceptable. The Iraqi government, with U.S. support, must continue to improve its legal framework for supporting returnees and must ensure that all returns are voluntary, and conducted with dignity to areas that are safe and suitable for return.

In urging Al-Maliki to take these steps, President Obama should reiterate America’s commitment to meeting the basic needs of Iraq’s displaced, through financial support for humanitarian agencies and through diplomatic engagement with host countries. The announcement of a potential return of an Ambassador to Syria is a welcome and overdue step that RI has been calling for since 2007. This will ensure that the U.S. can engage with the Syrian government on issues relating to the basic needs of Iraqi refugees. Finally, the President can continue to affirm the U.S.’s commitment to resettle those most vulnerable Iraqi’s who will never be able to return home.

So, when Obama pulls our troops out, and if a sectarian blood bath ensues, will it be Obama’s blood bath?

Obama may be opening the door to millions of asylum applicants

Update July 21st:  For readers wanting more details on this decision by the Obama Administration, the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) has a discussion with links here (scroll down to the third item).  Hat tip:  Paul

The New York Times reported on Wednesday:

The Obama administration has opened the way for foreign women who are victims of severe domestic beatings and sexual abuse to receive asylum in the United States. The action reverses a Bush administration stance in a protracted and passionate legal battle over the possibilities for battered women to become refugees.

In addition to meeting other strict conditions for asylum, abused women will need to show that they are treated by their abuser as subordinates and little better than property, according to an immigration court filing by the administration, and that domestic abuse is widely tolerated in their country. They must show that they could not find protection from institutions at home or by moving to another place within their own country.

The case that is in question is that of a Mexican woman seeking asylum, fearful of being murdered by her common-law husband. He forced her to live with him, stole her salary, repeatedly raped her at gunpoint and tried to kill her. Last year Bush administration officials argued in court that her case did not meet the legal standard for asylum. Now the Obama administration is reversing that stance.

The question of asylum for battered women has been around since 1996, when

a Guatemalan woman named Rody Alvarado was granted asylum by an immigration court, based on her account of repeated beatings by her husband. Three years later, an immigration appeals court overturned Ms. Alvarado’s asylum, saying she was not part of any persecuted group under American law.

Apparently that case is not yet resolved.

Since then Ms. Alvarado’s case has stalled as successive administrations debated the issue, with immigration officials reluctant to open a floodgate of asylum petitions from battered women across the globe. During the Clinton administration, Attorney General Janet Reno proposed regulations to clarify the matter, but they have never gone into effect. In a briefing paper in 2004, lawyers for the Department of Homeland Security raised the possibility of asylum for victims of domestic violence, but the Bush administration never put that into practice in immigration court, Professor Musalo said.

Now Homeland Security officials say they are returning to views the department put forward in 2004, refining them to draw conditions sufficiently narrow that battered women would prevail in only a limited number cases.

It’s a thorny problem. Whose heart doesn’t go out to a woman with a story like the Mexican asylum seeker? But domestic violence (what a sterile term!) and sexual abuse are so common around the world that, as Phyllis Chesler points out,

Fellow Americans: Prepare to receive the entire female population of Pakistan sometime soon. And that’s just for starters. I don’t oppose this—but I honestly don’t know if we can economically afford to do it. Given the recession/depression, I rather doubt we can. But get ready for something like this to happen anyway.

…. Studies show that 50-90% of Pakistani women are routinely beaten, even when they are pregnant, and that daughter-beating and wife-beating are not considered crimes. Pakistani men will sometimes publicly gang-rape a young girl in order to falsely “avenge” another crime committed by a member of their own clan; be-head, throw acid at, or burn alive a girl or woman who has offended their family or political-religious honor; they will marry a ten-year-old daughter to a fifty-year-old man in order to settle a debt, or to receive a small sum of money. In Pakistan, most honor killings of girls and women are not prosecuted either. In one study, my own, first published in Middle East Quarterly, almost half the honor murders perpetrated in the West were perpetrated by Pakistani men or Pakistani families.

Even if Homeland Security drew narrow guidelines, there would still be plenty of eligible women just in Pakistan, and many more in other Muslim countries, plus those in other countries. Chesler seems to be suggesting that it would be a good idea to open our doors to battered women, but not their batterers, if we weren’t in a recession. She makes this excellent point:

Male domestic violence is a global phenomenon. Why single out one country—isn’t that “racist” or “Islamophobic” and doesn’t that suggest that all Pakistani Muslims are batterers or tend to batter women more than, let’s say, Christian-American men do?

But they do. They are trained to do so. Their culture has normalized woman-battering while the Big Bad West has actually gone and criminalized it, tried to shelter its victims and prosecute their persecutors. True, we have done so rather late in the day and in an imperfect way. But this level of progress does not exist in the Arab Middle East, Africa, or central Asia where even honor murders are accepted, rarely reported as such, even more rarely prosecuted, and where reduced sentences apply to this but to no other crime.

I’m sorry, Phyllis, and I’m terribly sorry for all those women, but it would be impossible to provide asylum to the millions of deserving women around the world. Of course, just because it’s impossible doesn’t mean Obama mightn’t try to do it. Not because he’s such a great humanitarian, but because it would overload the system and cause that much more chaos.

This issue bears watching.

American Al-Shabaab challenges Obama, says Obama’s ‘magical charisma’ won’t cut it

I told you about Al-Amriki the other day here, but thanks to a tip from Bill this morning you can hear for yourself the American Al-Shabaab mocking Obama and his Cairo speech, here.

The gist of his address is:  You (Obama) can’t fool us with your magical charisma.  There will be no peace for America, we won’t extend our hands to you.  Only our swords will be extended to you.

By the way, I think when Al-Amriki says ‘until you get out of our lands’ he pretty much is implying the whole world eventually, not just a few African and Middle Eastern countries.
