China cracks down on Muslim Uighers

Update a few hours later:  Violence escalates with 156 dead now.

We have our Muslim Somalis demonstrating at meatpacking plants while China has it Uighers rampaging at toy factories—seems no matter where you are it’s hard for such divergent cultures to work side by side especially when one group appears to be taking jobs from the other ethnic group.  Same old story whether its here or in China.  Isn’t diversity so beautiful?

From the Times On Line:

Police fought to restore order last night after thousands of members of China’s Muslim Uighur minority rampaged through city streets, burning vehicles and blocking traffic.

At least three people were killed in a rare outburst of violence in Urumqi, the capital of China’s restive westernmost region of Xinjiang, where many Uighurs chafe at Beijing’s rule and the limits imposed on their religion and cultural traditions.

Witnesses said that up to 3,000 rioters went on the rampage, smashing buses and overturning police barricades during several hours of violence.

Thousands of police and anti-riot troops later swept through the city, using teargas and water hoses to disperse crowds. “Now the whole city is on lockdown,” one witness said. The violence flared days after reports of ethnic clashes between Han Chinese and Uighur workers at a toy factory in the southern Guangdong province in which two Uighurs were killed and 188 wounded.

In the late-night brawl at the Early Light toy factory in Shaoguan city, a group of Han Chinese fought with Uighurs who had been recruited to the factory recently. A rumour that Uighur workers had raped two Han Chinese girls brought swift and violent retaliations from the Chinese workers.

Police have now arrested a Han Chinese for rumour-mongering after he was found to have made up the rape report in a fit of anger after losing his job at the plant.

We have heard much about the Uighers at RRW because 17 of them were scheduled to be released from Guantanamo Bay and resettled in the US.  Obama got the message that this would be a risky political move and has shuttled them off elsewhere defying the Chinese who wanted their terrorists back.  Our Uigher archive is here.

Bedbugs plague refugees (and landlords)

I think this is one of those chicken or egg stories—-you know, which came first?  Refugees or bedbugs?  Yesterday a couple of readers knew I would be interested in this  AP story from Manchester, NH about a refugee apartment building infested with bedbugs.

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — After all the officials took turns explaining a plan to end a bedbug infestation in an apartment building where mostly refugees live, Michel Ndayavugwi simply pointed to the young boy dozing in a chair in the back of the room.

“He’s sleeping because last night, he didn’t sleep,” Ndayavugwi said through an interpreter. “What can we do? Please, find for us good apartments and good housing … so that our children will not sleep in the classroom.”

Ndayavugwi lives at Langdon Mill, a four-story brick building that’s home to 16 families, most of them refugees from Somalia, Sudan and other African nations.

The building’s owner, tenants and various city agencies have spent years trying to tackle infestations. But ultimately it was two children who inspired a more aggressive plan to not only eliminate the infestation there but also to create a model for other landlords, tenants and communities around the state.

Read all about the plan which involves temporarily removing all the tenants (who, incidentally say they were promised decent housing), trashing all their furnishing and bedding and fumigating the building.

The Manchester story also mentions something we all know, that bedbugs had virtually been eradicated in most of the US until recent years.

Bedbugs – tiny flat insects that emerge from mattresses, sofas and sheets to feed on human blood at night – have made a comeback in recent years, invading hospitals, college dorms, hotels and apartment buildings around the country. The insects are not known to transmit any diseases, but their bites can cause infections and allergic reactions.

Coincidence?  Back in January I told you about the “Mysterious case of the bedbug evictions” in Shelbyville, TN.   In that story the apartment manager allegedly evicted Somali tenants if they had bedbug infested apartments.  The Somalis claimed that anyone who complained was evicted.  I never did hear what finally happened with that infested building, but rumor has it many of the Somalis have moved on elsewhere—to New Hampshire maybe?

I know a local landlord and know how difficult a time landlords are having economically, loaded down with every restriction under the sun, so why on earth would anyone take a chance renting to refugees?  I guess legally they can’t refuse!  This is not the first time Manchester has had landlord/refugee problems.  Here is a post I wrote more than a year ago about similar problems in Nebraska and it has links to other landlord/refugee problems including the one in Manchester.

By the way, I think there is a method to the madness:  ultimately the goal is to run private landlords out of business and nationalize housing—one more liberal fascist agenda item to destroy property rights—-the ultimate underpinning of capitalism.

Endnote:  Notice we have an African “community organizer.”   The New American Africans is apparently your typical Alinsky/Obama style community agitation group (see our whole category on Community Destabilization here).

Although I could find nothing on their financing or legal structure (no Guidestar listing, no IRS determination letter, no Form 990, no website even), your tax dollars are probably paying their salaries.

Honore Murenzi was visiting Langdon Mill in April as part of his work with New American Africans, a nonprofit group that helps the city’s refugees.

Utah National Guard seeking to help Iraqis settle in, many still leave

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, some members of the Utah National Guard are getting together with Iraqi refugees to help them settle into life in Utah.   I was surprised to see the large number of refugees that have already returned to the Middle East disgusted with life in America,  however, some plan to stick it out here especially as more violence is predicted.

But others have concluded that there is no future for them here. Since arriving in Utah, more than a dozen Iraqis — disappointed by the support system they found in America and often struggling to find work in a bad economy — have returned to their war-torn nation or other countries in the Middle East.

Refugees reported that they anticipate stepped up violence in their homeland as Obama pulls troops out of Iraq.

While Iraq is significantly less violent right now than it was at the time that many of the refugees left, some believe that Tuesday’s withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraqi cities — and a full withdrawal planned for 2010 — will spark a new round of sectarian fighting, including the tit-for-tat murder sprees that marred the nation from 2005 to 2007.

“People are going to start fighting again,” said Niaz Rashid, who arrived in Utah last month. “It is certain.”

Off topic, but I’ve wondered if when Obama pulls us out and if violence returns will Obama be blamed for losing Iraq?  Just wondering.  And, if refugee numbers increase will they be Obama’s refugees?

White House Amnesty chit-chat happened last Friday

The bipartisan White House strategy meeting to discuss Amnesty and border security that we originally heard was scheduled for June 8th, finally occurred Friday the 26th according to this news report from NumbersUSA.   No consensus was reached but Obama still says he wants Amnesty.    From NumbersUSA:

Pres. Barack Obama took the first step on Thursday towards immigration reform and an amnesty for more than 11 million illegal aliens. Members of the Administration met with 30 Members of Congress from both sides of the issue and both sides of the aisle to get the debate rolling, but Pres. Obama said after the meeting that there was “not by any means consensus across the table.”

Despite the differing opinions on how to handle the illegal alien population, how to secure the borders and how to monitor the flow of future immigrants, Pres. Obama said he’s committed to getting an amnesty through Congress.

See the NumbersUSA story to see who attended.

And, by the way, to one of our Progressive (radical leftwinger) commenters the other day who said I didn’t  know the difference between refugees and other immigrants, as long as the refugee agencies who are contracted to take care of refugees conflate the two and lobby for amnesty, so can I put the two together.   Frankly, it defies logic when federal contractors, like the US Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), can say that giving amnesty to 11-12 million illegal aliens won’t hurt refugee job prospects.

If you haven’t done so previously, check out the NumbersUSA permanent link at the top of our home page and see what the growth charts tell us about immigrations’ impact on the US over the next few decades.  If you are concerned about overcrowding, the loss of farmland and open space (more schools, more houses, more roads), the impact on air and water resources and a diminished quality of life for your kids and grandkids, Roy Beck’s demonstration is pretty scary.

Question for Progressives visiting RRW:  I’m curious, how do you justify in your minds the obvious impact millions of additional people arriving as immigrants to the US will have on our resources and our environment, since Leftwing policies promote both environmental protection AND more immigration?

No surprise, welfare use is up

The Wall Street Journal reported this not surprising story  yesterday.  I’m linking it here because it includes a good summary of many of the welfare programs refugees are eligible for, and I wanted to have it handy if I needed it.   I see our home state of Maryland is a hot state for welfare usage.

The Cloward-Piven strategy and why we need the poor and angry immigrants.

Cloward would be so proud if he were alive and surely Piven is proud to see their theory so close to fruition.  They esposed overloading the welfare system with the poor as a means of tearing down our government.   Robert Chandler writing in the Washington Times last fall.

Developed in the mid-1960s by two Columbia University sociologists, Andrew Cloward and Frances Fox Piven, much of their strategy was drawn from Saul Alinsky, Chicago’s notorious revolutionary Marxist community organizer. The   Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN)* succeeded the National Welfare Rights Organization in the execution of the Cloward-Piven grand tactics of using the poor as cannon fodder to tear down the capitalist system. It was low-income, mostly black and Hispanic people, who were used by ACORN guerrillas to take subprime toxic mortgages.

* Of course we have just learned that ACORN has changed its name, here.

This post is filed in our Where to find information category but also appropriately in Community destabilization and Obama.   If you are a new reader and want to get an understanding of Obama/Saul Alinsky and Community organizing, I recommend you begin reading our community destabilization posts.    Makes me wonder if all those angry Iraqi refugees we have been writing about are filling a critical role for the advocates of “change.”
