Arizona Rohingya refugee story: from poor refugee to political agitator

If you don’t know about the Rohingya, you better learn quickly! You can start your education with my over 200 posts here at RRW.

We have admitted almost 20,000 Rohingya to the US in the last ten years and as their numbers increase they become (like all Islamic ethnic groups) political activists.

Sheraz Islam: from suffering refugee to Islamic political activist! Story and photo here: http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/news/rohingya-refugees-in-phoenix-ethnic-cleansing-in-myanmar-9701725

This article from the Phoenix New Times features a 25-year-old Rohingya Muslim refugee living in Phoenix who wants to get his mother and 10 siblings here (but for that mean old Donald Trump).

A few things you need to know before reading this story, which the Leftwing media will never tell you.

~The Buddhist government contends that the ‘Rohingya’ are not some special group, but are illegal aliens from Bangladesh (a Muslim country) who decades ago illegally arrived in Burma. The Buddhist leaders of Burma want the country to remain Buddhist and don’t want to be demographically conquered by Muslims.

~Aung San Suu Kyi, the famous Burmese freedom fighter, has not rallied to the Rohingya’s cause which infuriates the Left.

~The Organization of Islamic Cooperation is trying to get its foot in the door in Burma to defend their people and agitate against the government.

~The round of violence that began in 2012 (often cited by the mainstream media) was ignited when a gang of Muslim men raped and murdered a Burmese Buddhist girl (something the media never tells you now), and the Buddhists retaliated.

~As we learned here yesterday, the newest wave of violence was from a Burmese military response to attacks by a Rohingya armed group.

Now to the political agitators at Arizona State.

Here is what I want to know, if they are “ethnic cleansing” in Burma (aka Myanmar), why is that our problem?

Why is that a reason to spend billions of US taxpayer dollars bringing people like Islam here, apparently not to add much to American society, but to political organize for Muslims back home?

BTW, Trump will be supplying more Rohingya activists for mosques and Islamic centers when the first Australian rejects get here (see my earlier post).

From the Phoenix New Times, a new cause, not the Syrian Muslim victims (that was oh so last year), but Rohingya:

Here in Phoenix, Rohingya refugees are wondering why no one seems to be paying attention.

Among those trying to spread awareness about the crisis is Sheraz Islam, whose own father died less than a month ago while trying to flee the country for Bangladesh. His family lost their home, their land, and everything they own, he says. And convincing Americans to care, when they may or may not even be able to point to Myanmar on a map, is a challenge.

“Most people, they don’t know who the Rohingya are,” he says. “When we talk to people, we explain that we are an ethnic minority, and the government [of Myanmar] denied us our citizenship.

“We’d like to live in our own country, but unfortunately we had to leave because we are Rohingya.”

LOL! Aung San Suu Kyi not sure she wants the Obama smooch! You can imagine how angry the Left is with Suu Kyi. She is one of them, they think. So how can she not be coming to the defense of Muslims!

Islam is one of roughly 600 Rohingya refugees currently living in the Valley. They make up less than a quarter of the total number of Burmese refugees who have been resettled in Arizona since 2001. Most are Muslims, and arrived after 2012, when attacks on the Rohingya intensified after decades of discrimination.

[….]

After landing in a refugee camp in Sri Lanka, he applied for asylum through the United Nations. The U.S. State Department approved his application, and, a little less than six years ago, he arrived in Arizona. Lutheran Social Services helped get him set up with a job and apartment, and taught him how to turn the lights on and off — he’d never had electricity before.

“We don’t have these kind of things back in our country,” he explains. “They came and they guided us how to use the oven, how to use the microwave, how to use the bathroom.”

Here we go! Rally organized by Islamic Community Centers, what a surprise!

On Sunday night, he and other Rohingya refugees held a vigil on the Old Main Lawn at Arizona State University.

Organized by the Islamic Community Center of Tempe and Islamic Center of the Northeast Valley, it drew a diverse crowd of student activists, local faith leaders, and refugees from around the world. They held up signs calling on Aung San Suu Kyi — the country’s de facto leader, and, ironically, a former winner of the Nobel Peace Prize — to put an end to the violence against the Rohingya.

Lots more here if you feel like reading it.

Again, my Rohingya Reports category is here, posts extend back ten years.

Somali refugees resettled in Arizona headed to Minnesota in large numbers

Why would they leave a climate more like home to move to the frigid north in droves?  All sorts of reasons are given in this article from the Phoenix New Times —-supposedly for jobs, to be with family members, Somali “community,” better welfare, but not mentioned is to build political power through numbers.  Minnesota will be the first state to push for aspects of Shariah Law to be put in place, in my opinion.
Here is how the report begins (there is always a sad individual or family that is the star of the story! J-school 101!):

Bilad Yusuf and her seven kids were on their way to Minnesota, less than two months after they arrived in Phoenix.

“We didn’t know how to get jobs here, and even if we did, we didn’t know how we’d get to them,” she explained through an interpreter who translated from Somali to English.

We learned in this article that Amazon warehouses in Minnesota and Kentucky are looking for Somali refugee laborers.

After waiting for six years in a refugee camp, Yusuf and her family arrived in the United States this winter amidst the chaos surrounding the Trump administration’s attempt to block Somali immigrants like them from entering the country.

Following a brief stop in Houston, they were transferred to Phoenix. There, stranded in the urban sprawl without a car, they found themselves lost: Where were they supposed to get groceries? How did they go about setting up long-overdue doctor’s appointments? How would they pay rent after their initial stipend from the U.S. government ran out?

My first question is, where is their resettlement agency that we (taxpayers) pay to get them set up in the first three months? But, my next, and more important question is this:
WHY THE HECK IS TRUMP CONTINUING TO ADMIT FAMILIES LIKE THESE THAT ARE DROPPED UNATTENDED IN ANYTOWN USA, AND WILL HAVE NO WAY TO FIND WORK FOR YEARS TO COME?
You need to read the whole article, it is chock-full of very informative bits of information.
And, folks in Minnesota need to be reading it especially carefully.  LOL! There is even a mention of your Catholic Charities and Lutheran Social Services as the spearheads of the original Somali migration to the state.  It is all about your generous welfare we learned here in 2011!
And, don’t miss the news on BIG CHICKEN hiring them (not news to us), or Amazon warehouses in Minnesota and Kentucky! That is new news! (I’m convinced that the reason Senator Mitch McConnell is mum on refugees is because he is backed by big businesses in the state that want cheap legal immigrant laborers.)

The article implies that the feds do not track “secondary migrants” like this family, but they do to some degree because we reported here in 2014 that Minnesota gets (by far) the most as they move there to be WITH THEIR KIND OF PEOPLE (why isn’t that called racist and xenophobic?).

Roving Somalis!

And, while on the subject of roving Somalis, don’t miss Leo Hohmann’s update (from Monday) of a story almost a year old where a Somali woman entered the yard of an Atlanta area family, ripped down their flag pole and attempted to beat the mother and daughter with it.
She was supposed to be in court this week, but wasn’t.

Tucson area resettlement agency may close; Memory lane! Iraqis unhappy there in 2007

They say they may close if the number of refugees admitted to the US falls as a result of Trump’s 120-day pause on the program.
Somehow they seem to think that the flow will pick up because of the Hawaiian judge’s misguided restraining order.  As we have said repeatedly, Trump didn’t need the Executive Order to reduce numbers being admitted to the US. (We are monitoring the numbers coming in every few days, see refugee admissions in right hand side bar.)
After I give you the latest news, I want to tell you about Tucson, Arizona and unhappy Iraqis there ten years ago.
Here below are a few snips from a story yesterday at Arizona Public Media.
Notice that once again, they are admitting, and the media is publishing the fact, that these so-called non-profit agencies actually live off of contracts (based on per refugee head payments) with the US government.

Tucson-area nonprofits that resettle refugees are worried that they may have to cut services or close their doors under the refugee ban President Donald Trump is seeking.

Refugee Focus is one of three nonprofit agencies in Tucson that resettle refugees from around the world.

Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest runs Refugee Focus, and Connie Phillips oversees the nonprofit. [She participated in an ‘interfaith’ rally against Trump, here, last month.—ed]

Connie Phillips Lutheran Social Services Southwest. http://www.lss-sw.org/key-staff/

She said Refugee Focus may have to stop operating if the Trump Administration wins the court battle for the most recent executive order and there is a 90 to 120 day pause in settling refugees.

[….]

Money to run the program comes from federal contracts for resettlement services.

“There’s just a lot of uncertainty. It is just highly, highly stressful right now.”

The other two nonprofits that resettle refugees in Tucson are International Rescue Committee and Catholic Social Services.

I just checked Lutheran Social Services Southwest recent Form 990 here.
92% of their funding is from you, the taxpayer. Their gross revenue in that form (2014) was $14,238,656.  $9,210,621 is from government grants and $3,957,813 is listed as medicaid contracts (What the heck is that! Why is some Lutheran non-profit managing medicaid contracts?)

Iraqi refugees resettled in Tucson voice their unhappiness!

Back in the earliest days of RRW (2007), this news (below) from Tucson was an eye-opener for me.
Iraqis complained to the Washington Post that they were unhappy and neglected.

Like the Cuban, Vietnamese, Laotian and Sudanese refugees before them, some of the Iraqis are going through a difficult adjustment period, feeling disoriented, alone and even abandoned by the social service agency that is supposed to serve them.

[….]

When the Iraqi refugees arrive in the United States, they are sent to cities where there are other Arab or Muslim populations. Social service organizations are assigned to help them resettle.

“Refugees, in general, endure a tremendous cultural shock,” said Janell Mousseau, a program director at the Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest, an Arizona nonprofit organization that helped to resettle the 34 Iraqis here. “They have a lot of adjusting to do in a short time.”

LOL! Read this next paragraph!  What a difference ten years makes. Back then the WaPo and most media never mentioned that the resettlement contractors were PAID for their charitable work by the US taxpayer!

The organization was asked [LOL! asked!—ed] by the State Department to find proper housing for the Iraq families, providing them basic supplies and helping them acquire Social Security numbers and food stamps. The group is paying [LOL! the group is paying!—ed] the refugees’ rent for three months. After that, the families will have to pick up the cost themselves.

Before they arrived here, the refugees said they were told by U.N. representatives that they could get jobs based on their professional qualifications. But they said they have now been told that they should work as hotel housekeepers, an occupation many of them have refused because they deem it degrading. [The hotel industry along with food processing companies have been major consumers of cheap refugee labor!—ed]

To add to their frustration, when the families arrived, they said they found their apartments missing beds, kitchen supplies, bedspreads and blankets. [Contracts with the govt. specifically list these items to be supplied as requirements of the contract—-ed]

This last line resonated with me because one of the first things that people were buzzing about in my Maryland county, when refugees were placed there beginning in 2006, was that some teachers at the local junior college were finding the refugees blankets and winter coats!
I have 727 posts in my Iraqi refugee category (see early posts where I joked about Matthew Lee a reporter carrying water for the contractors by helping to beat the drum for more Iraqi admissions).

Obama gone wild!

You need to know that George W. Bush was reluctant to admit the thousands of Iraqi refugees (paying clients!) that the contractors were demanding. But, in the last year he opened the flood gates and we have now, 11 years and 5 and 1/2 months later, admitted 141,433 Iraqis!
Here at Wrapsnet you can see what happened when the Obama team took over the US Department of State in 2009:

You can see how the number jumped when Obama took office. Of the 141,433 Iraqis we admitted in the last decade plus, 1,578 were placed in Tucson, AZ. Do you see that low year (2011)? That was the year two Iraqi refugee terrorists were arrested in Bowling Green, KY and all of the Iraqis had to be rescreened.

Another TB shocker from Breitbart: over 200 active TB cases in Arizona began as latent TB

Over and over again we are told that we have nothing to fear from the high percentage of refugees who enter the US infected with latent Tuberculosis, however, all too often latent becomes active as Michael Patrick Leahy at Breitbart tells us in the latest installment of his investigation of TB and other diseases refugees are permitted to bring with them to their new homes (in your towns).
Leahy at Breitbart today (emphasis is mine):

The high rate of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) among refugees is a public health issue, Arizona state officials say.

tuberculosis
Photo: World Health Organization. http://www.who.int/topics/tuberculosis/en/

“Most [of the] 222 cases of active tuberculosis infection (TB) …reported among Arizona’s refugee populations…[in] the past two decades …were caused by latent tuberculosis infections that became active after years or even decades of lying dormant,” according to the state’s Department of Health.

Eighteen percent “of all refugees resettled in Arizona arrive with a latent TB infection,” the 2014 Arizona Refugee Health Report states.

“For this reason,” the report adds, “it is important that those people discovered to have a latent TB infection complete an entire course of medication.” [You, American taxpayers are footing the bill!—ed]

The rate of LTBI among the general population is only 4 percent.

Active TB is infectious, while latent TB is not. Some 10 percent of those infected with latent TB develop active TB.

[….]

The high rate of LTBI among refugees, the significant percentage of arriving refugees who are not even screened for LTBI upon arrival, and very low rate at which refugees who test positive for LTBI complete successful treatment for it, are all reasons for the CDC to tighten its tuberculosis screening standards, as a December 2015 study by seven current and former CDC public health experts recommended….

Haven’t we been told they are already screened overseas first? What is up with this? So they could be wandering around your neighborhoods for weeks without having been health screened?

The political leadership at the CDC, however, shows no indication it intends to change the policy to screen all refugees for LTBI overseas, despite the higher health risks posed by its current tuberculosis screening protocols.

Congress seeking answers about how many asylum seekers have terror connections

This is all I have and no time today to do a search.  Since the letter is not linked, it may be older news that the reporter at the Washington Free Beacon has just found and wishes to disseminate further.  No matter because it gives me an opportunity to link a story about how Somalis skip around the world and end up on our southern border.

Who is on the bus? Somalis caught at the border and moved to a detention facility. http://www.tpnn.com/2015/05/13/video-dhs-caught-moving-somali-muslim-illegals-into-california/

It was only ten days ago that we had a report of a busload of asylum-seeking Somalis being moved to a California detention center, here.
BTW, the difference between “refugees” and “asylum” seekers is that we pick up the refugees abroad and bring them here, and then sign them up for their social services.  Asylum seekers get here on their own steam and either enter illegally or overstay a visa and apply for asylum (claiming they will be persecuted if they return home).  Once granted asylum they are eligible for all the welfare goodies too!
Here is the Washington Free Beacon story:

Congress is demanding that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) release documents detailing how many foreigners seeking asylum in the United States have been found to have ties to terror groups, according to a recent letter sent to the agency by leading lawmakers.

The letter comes on the heels of revelations by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) that at least 638 aliens seeking asylum in America have been found to have connections to terrorists.

This “recent disclosure regarding the numbers of aliens found to have a ‘credible fear’ in cases where the terrorism bar to asylum eligibility may have applied raised the concern that hundreds of known and suspected aliens with terrorist connections may be attempting to take advantage of our country’s asylum system,” according to the letter, sent by leaders of four House committees on national security, the judiciary, and government reform.

There is more, read it all.

One Somali’s great travel adventures

When I wrote this post, I mentioned the globe-trotting Somalis who pay huge sums of money to get to our southern border.  Reader Leo found this account of one Somali’s travel itinerary.
The first question I have is why didn’t the hero of this improbable tale ask for asylum in the first safe country he entered?  That is the internationally understood method to request asylum.  Instead, obviously with buckets of money, he traveled to the US Southern border.
He is here now, has been granted asylum, and wants to bring the weeping wife and 12 kids to join him!
From The Other Phoenix:
Long sob story you can read yourself, then this:

Hilowle’s wife wept. She told her husband to escape, taking only the $80 and 20 Somali schilling in his pocket. At the time, a dollar was equal 35,000 schillings. Hilowle’s wife told him he had to leave, because if he died then the entire family would lose their financial support.

World traveler and now US refugee extraordinaire, Aden Hilowle, was initially cared for by Catholic Charities in Arizona.

It took eight days to reach Ethiopia and contact his friends. His father sent him $14,000 from the sale of Hilowle’s house. [He had a house to sell?  But what about wifey?—ed]

Hilowle contacted a human smuggler. For $14,000, he could get a passport and a visa to Italy, but for $7,000 he could get a visa to Cuba, from the smuggler. From Cuba, he could go to the U.S. Hilowle left Ethiopia on Sept. 15, 2009 for Cuba.

He said he flew to Dubai, Moscow, Cuba and finally Ecuador for another $2,000. From Ecuador he traveled to Columbia in the back of a semi-truck with 45 other people.

“I was nearly to die,” he said.

He traveled from Columbia to Panama, where he was detained for three months and learned Spanish.

Next, he traveled through Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala in the backs of commercial trucks.

Once, he thought he would asphyxiate. The entire truck was incredibly hot and the air was stifling. When the two drivers opened the back of the truck, Hilowle told them in Spanish he wouldn’t go back in the truck because he thought he was going to die. They threatened to leave him on the side of the road.

At the border check points the drivers locked Hilowle into a fold-up bunk bed. The room between the bed and the wall was so small Hilowle had to place his elbow against the bottom of the bed so he could breathe.

After enduring four check points, Hilowle refused to get back into the fold up bed. A police officer caught Hilowle, but the truck drivers bribed him, he said. The police officer took the money and offered to drive Hilowle to the border in his car. By the time they reached the border, they were friends. The officer said he too would like to go to America.

Hilowle traveled through Mexico from Guatemala via tourist bus, foot, plane and car. On March 3, 2010, around 5 p.m., Hilowle arrived in the border town of San Luis, Ariz., where he sought political asylum.

American border officials handcuffed Hilowle.

Like many political asylees, he was sent to a federal detention center. He refers to it as a prison.

“They give you food and shelter but no freedom,” Hilowle said. “You can’t adapt to prison.”

On Jan. 31, 2011 Hilowle was released from detention. He was granted refugee status, he said, and Catholic Charities resettled him in Serrano Village.

Surely by now wife and children have joined Hilowle and everyone lives happily ever after (on the US taxpayer)!
We are so gullible.
