Chicago: Somali in refugee neighborhood sets arson fire, kills neighbor, firefighters injured

My Somali crime stories* have been on the back burner lately as we try to get a handle on the fast-moving Haitian refugee issue.  But, here is terrible Somali crime news from Chicago reported at Debbie Schlussel and sent to me by Janet.

From the Chicago Sun Times:

An irate taxi driver involved in a long-running dispute with two neighbors intentionally set fire to a Rogers Park apartment building, killing one person and injuring five others, prosecutors said.

Mahad Ali Hassan, a 26-year-old Somali immigrant, was denied bail Sunday on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated arson and unlawful use of a weapon.

Hassan, who lived on the fourth floor of the five-story building at 6720 N. Sheridan, allegedly poured gasoline in the hallway Thursday and ignited a blaze outside the fifth-floor apartment of two women with whom he had an ongoing feud, prosecutors said.

Arson investigators also found evidence that gasoline was used to ignite a second fire on the fifth floor outside the apartment of Noor Surani, 49.

Surani died of smoke inhalation.

Five other people were injured in the blaze, including one man who jumped from the building’s top floor to escape the fire.

Of the injured — including two firefighters — only the jumper suffered life-threatening injuries, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said.

There is more, read it all.

Learn more about Rogers Park, a section of Chicago in which the US State Department (with their friend Ed Silverman, the Illinois state refugee coordinator) is resettling hundreds (thousands?) of refugees inspite of reports that the neighborhood is a slum and a crime mecca, here.  Of course, maybe this is the old chicken or egg story, which came first, crime, or refugees?

* Here are two of our most recent Somali crime stories:  Minneapolis triple-murder, here, and Lewiston Somali woman runs down high school student with her Mercedes, here.

For new readers :

The US State Department has admitted over 80,000 Somali refugees to the US (this linked post continues to be one of the most widely read posts we have ever written) in the last 25 years and then last year had to suspend family reunification because widespread immigration fraud was revealed through DNA testing.  That specific program has not yet been reopened (that we know of), but will be soon.  Nevertheless, thousands of Somali Muslims continue to be resettled as I write this.

Somali teens appear in court in MN triple-murder case

This is the latest from Minneapolis on the supposed robbery gone wrong that we reported here  just over a week ago.

From the Minneapolis Star Tribune:

More than 200 East African immigrants tried to squeeze into back-to-back Hennepin County court sessions Friday for two teenage Somali boys facing murder charges in the shooting deaths of three men last week at a Seward neighborhood store.

More than half those who came to support the families of the victims and the defendants had to wait outside as Mahdi Hassan Ali, 17, and his friend, Ahmed Shire Ali, 17, appeared before a judge for the first time since the Jan. 6 shootings at the Seward Market and Halal Meats in south Minneapolis. (The teenagers are friends and not related.)

During separate hearings, District Judge Gary Larson set bail at $3 million for each.

Mahdi Ali was the alleged gunman in what authorities have described as a robbery turned fatal. Ahmed Ali allegedly confined two people to the back of the store while his friend robbed and shot the men up front, according to a criminal complaint.

A reader sent  me the criminal complaint but it sure looks like if they planned to simply rob the place they started killing before they even gave the victims a chance to give them any money.  Maybe there is more to this story than just a couple of crazy kids gone wrong.

You can read the whole story in the Star Tribune.  It is one more sordid Somali crime.

If you didn’t see it yesterday, see the story of the crazy Maine Somali Mom, driving without a valid license, who runs down a high school student in Lewiston.

Scandinavia terror watch

Here is an article from Terrorism Monitor that addresses the recent case of the attempted murder of the Danish cartoonist by a Somali immigrant (the whole story is in this article if you haven’t seen it), but I was most interested in the information that Sweden and Denmark are keeping a closer eye on their Somali communities.

What is clear, however, is that operational networks do exist which link al-Shabaab to Somali diaspora communities in the Nordic countries. Sweden’s security services have repeatedly warned of this threat, while Danish security services have found themselves very busy in the wake of the cartoons. Both have increased their focus on their respective domestic Somali communities. It has been estimated that there are about 20,000 Somalis in each nation, though figures are unreliable. What has alarmed Swedish forces, however, is the growing evidence that non-Somalis are being attracted to the fight from Sweden, something that is supported by a Danish report which claims Somalia is now being seen as the exciting jihad hotspot among young radicals. While the actual numbers are quite small (Sweden claims some 10 nationals are currently in Somalia, and the number from Denmark is unlikely to be much higher), the connection does raise the worrying prospect that al-Shabaab or a similar group might attempt to manipulate the network to carry out an attack in Europe.

Lewiston, ME: Somali woman with no driver’s license runs down student

Boy, this is one strange story.   Here is how it begins at the Sun Journal (hat tip: Susan):

LEWISTON — A teenager was struck by a car and the driver was arrested Thursday morning after an accident at the high school.

Police said Lewiston High School junior Kelsey Cope-Norris, 16, was struck by a car driven by Bilow Farah, 33, of Lewiston.

Thursday night, Cope-Norris was being treated at Central Maine Medical Center for broken bones and other injuries. She was listed in good condition.

It happened at about 7:30 a.m. Police said Cope-Norris was walking on a path between the school parking lot and an access road when a Mercedes Benz SUV driven by Farah veered onto the path. [How on earth does a refugee have a Mercedes?  Is she in the convenience store business, or perhaps home health care?]

Cope-Norris was knocked to the ground and Farah’s SUV plowed into seven other vehicles parked in the lot, police said.

Farah was treated at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center and released. She was then arrested on charges of driving without a license and driving to endanger. She was booked at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn and released on bail later in the day.

Detective William Brochu found that Farah was driving with an expired permit and had been dropping her sons off at the school. She was arrested with bail conditions that she not drive until licensed. She is scheduled to appear in court in February.

Witnesses said Farah may have become impatient with long lines of cars as people waited to drop off their children at the school. She tried to drive around the line, according to several witnesses, before striking Cope-Norris.

A commenter at another site (I’m told here, but am not seeing the comments) says she was there when the accident happened and this is her account—a different and more frightening version.   From ‘Nancy’:

“I think it is important to know what actually happenned. I was in line behind the SUV that hit this young lady. The driver had just dropped off 5 young men at the high school. The vehicle then sat there in the driving lane while cars backed up behind us. The driver then put on her blinker as if to make a U-turn which would have brought her right into the line of busses and/or other students arriving by private car. Again she sat there waiting. The driver then decided to blast through the snowbank to her right and careened down the walkway that students use. The driver never faltered and continued to accelerate. She impacted with the student, continued on into a parked car, pushed that vehicle aside, and kept going until she impacted and was stopped by several other parked cars. This was not an accident caused by someone who “lost control” as stated by Channel 8. This was done by someone who CHOSE to ignore all traffic laws and common sense, and in doing so, endangered the life of a student. Maybe the laws are different in Somalia, you are here now….follow ours.”

I don’t get it really, this is just one of many many stories we have had from around the country about Somalis driving recklessly and without proper driver’s licenses.  Does no one ever notice erratic driving (and report it) before one of these accidents occurs?

Finally the report at the Sun Journal adds a couple of nuggets of information that add some irony (humor!) to this story.

First, it seems that the girl who was injured and is reportedly (thankfully) doing well, organized a Lewiston High School “Diversity walk.”

Cope-Norris, an accomplished artist, was a nominee for the 2009 Lewiston Shining Star award. She was also one of the organizers of the LHS Walk for Diversity last April.

And, the woman charged had been featured as a successful Somali Bantu immigrant to Maine in a college report.

Farah has been featured in a series by Colby College in Waterville about Somali Bantus who immigrated to Maine from Africa.

Here is the website for the Colby College report. Taxpayers probably paid for this study and note there is a link for refugee rights and activism.  It is the same old gang!

We have written lots of posts about the on-going issues involving Somalis in Lewiston, ME.  This post from last November is a good summary of how Somalis came to be in Lewiston, the welfare magnet, Maine.  Use our search function to find the other posts.

Jamal is leaving for the UN; replacement chosen for MN Somali Justice Advocacy Center

It is confirmed, the Somali ‘Jesse Jackson,’ Omar Jamal, is leaving Minneapolis to take a position at the United Nations.  This is one of those American (Somali “refugee”) rags to riches stories—you know—someone originally convicted of immigration fraud for getting into the US illegally and in a few short years he is representing Somalia at the UN. (Makes you wonder what citizenship he holds, doesn’t it?)

The Minneapolis Star Tribune has announced his replacement.

A Minneapolis social studies teacher who once served as a chief of staff to a Somali president has been appointed director of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center in St. Paul.

Dahir Mirreh Jibreel, 56, replaces Omar Jamal, who has taken a job with the Permanent Mission of the Somali Republic to the United Nations in New York City.

Jibreel will begin work immediately.

The Somali Justice Advocacy Center is a non-profit organization whose primary role is to advocate for the local Somali community “on a variety of issues,” Jibreel said.

He takes over as Minneapolis police continue to investigate last week’s triple homicide, in which two of the victims were Somalis and the two suspects arrested over the weekend are believed to be Somalis.

An estimated 50,000 to 75,000 Somalis live in the Twin Cities area, making it home to the largest concentration of Somali immigrants in the U.S.

“We will start our own mission and our own program and our own goals for the organization and we will start fresh,” Jibreel said.

Readers who wish to peruse all of our coverage of Jamal’s career need only type ‘Omar Jamal’ into our search function for your reading pleasure.  Jamal has been  involved in talking to reporters on so many issues I can’t name them all.  He dashed off to NYC to defend the Somali pirate, he was right there in Denver talking to the authorities about the Canadian Somali who was found dead in a hotel room with enough cyanide to kill hundreds just before the Democratic National Convention in 2008.  Not a terrorist, just a nut, Jamal told the FBI.  And, and he was right in the middle of the Somali missing youth case (gone to Jihad every one) from the beginning.

Funny thing is, I don’t find any record of The Somali Justice Advocacy Center being anything more than a one-man operation.  Granted it is filed with the State of Minnesota as a non-profit, here.  Looks like $35 and a simple form will get you filed.  But, Guidestar lists the address as Jamal’s and has no supporting documents—no IRS Letter of Determination, no Form 990’s.  So what is up with that?  Who funded Jamal? Who is funding the  new guy?  Does anyone know?

Bottomline, come up with a group name, file with the state and then tell reporters , law enforcement, etc. that you represent your community.  It is as simple as that!

I wonder if the new guy is planning on applying for an Ethnic Community Based Organization grant from the ORR?   Those federal grants are not available to anyone who has been convicted of a crime!
