Australian terror case update: outburst in court

I’ve got a couple of update reports from Australia (thanks to reader B.L)  on the story we posted two days ago, here.   The suspected Somali/Lebanese terrorists are now going before a magistrate.   Wissam Mahmoud Fattal shouted that he was not a terrorist and refused to stand in court.  Here is the first update from the Sydney Morning Herald.

One of the Melbourne men charged with preparing a terrorist act directed an angry outburst at the magistrate hearing his case this morning.

Wissam Mahmoud Fattal, 33, told the Melbourne Magistrates Court he was not a terrorist and accused Australian troops of killing innocent people overseas.

“You call me a terrorist but I’ve never killed anyone in my life,” Fattal told magistrate Peter Reardon.

Fattal, who was already in custody on unrelated matters and is charged with conspiring to prepare a terrorist act, refused to stand before Mr Reardon, saying it was against his religious beliefs. But the magistrate did not accept the principle that it was a religious act.

For more details about the terror plot bust and its aftermath, here are a couple more articles.  See here and here.

Australian terror raid: Are terrorists created by Somali nationalism?

NO!  Their marching orders are from Allah!

That is not exactly what this Reuters update on the Somalis (and Lebanese) arrested in Australia yesterday is all about, but that is the part I want to emphasize here.

The Reuters story begins:

LONDON (Reuters) – Australia’s arrest of four suspected attack plotters said to have links to a Somali group may suggest radicalized veterans of war in the Horn of Africa are willing to return to the diaspora to strike Western targets.

The four, all Australian citizens with Somali and Lebanese backgrounds, were arrested in dawn raids on 19 properties across Melbourne, after a seven-month investigation involving several forces and Australia’s national security agency ASIO.

The group in question is al Shabaab, which is conducting an international recruitment campaign backed by al Qaeda’s propaganda network for fighters to join its push to take power in Mogadishu and impose strict Islamic rule.

Although al Shabaab plays up its link to the transnational network of Osama bin laden, attacking Western targets overseas is not its primary goal, which is overwhelmingly domestic.

But one consequence of its use of ethnic Somalis from the millions-strong diaspora community may be that veterans head home with the funds or skills to attack Western targets of their own volition, Western counter-terrorism officials say.

“The chances are extremely remote that this was Shabaab saying ‘Go off and strike Australia’,” said Will Hartley, Editor of Jane’s Terrorism and Insurgency Center, a security consultancy and information provider.

When I went to the Senate hearings last March I was struck by the Senators wanting to know from each witness, did they think the Somalis were getting marching orders from Al-Qaeda?  When the witnesses, terrorism experts, said that they didn’t think they were, there was a visible sigh of relief  among the Senators.  Additionally the Senators wanted to know if the Somalis who had returned to Somalia for training were motivated by purely nationalistic zeal as if somehow confirmation of that would make us all safer.

I’m sitting there wanting to shout to the packed hearing room, ‘what the heck does that matter!’  They are getting their marching orders from Islam itself!  Don’t you get it!  No one has to tell them what to do. We, infidels, are targets wherever we live.

Likewise now, it seems from this report at Reuters that Australians are trying to figure out if this is purely a nationalistic response to the war in their ‘homeland’ or does this alleged terror plot have greater implications for the West.  We Westerners are for the most part nationalistic so we can relate to that inspiration to fight and we grab that excuse.

Hartley goes on:

“NOT MERELY RESISTANCE FIGHTERS”

“Far more likely is that Australia was targeted by Australians who had been in Somalia, were radicalized, and were intent on carrying out or expanding the jihad themselves … not under Shabaab orders,” he said.

Almost eight years till the anniversary of 9/11 and we are still dancing around the misguided notion that somehow we are responsible for making them do it — acts of Jihad terror—instead of acknowleging that their “faith” requires it of them!

Zakaria Maruf, a now deceased Somali-American who joined the Jihad in Somalia, said it better than I can, see my post “Do it for Allah…” here.

In the interview, Maruf (one of those who left to fight) implies that his participation in the fighting was motivated by religion, not patriotism. Maruf said he and his friends heard the call of Allah, and they accepted it.

Australian Somalis take their terrorist training to the next level

Update August 6th:   Islamic Scholar says he warned government about radicalization among refugees, here.

Update August 5th:  Suspect causes ruckus in court, here.

Update August 4th:  More from Reuters today, here.

Yes, it seems that what most feared would happen in the US when it was learned that 20 or so Somali young men (former refugees) had left the good life in the US and gone to terrorist training in Somalia has come to pass—in Australia!   One of those arrested today in Melbourne brought his Al-Shabaab training back from Africa and was planning to use it against Australian soldiers.  Hat tip:  Mars.

From The Australian:

Four men – all Australian citizens – were arrested this morning as federal and state police, armed with search warrants, swooped on members of the suspected terror cell this morning in the second-largest counter-terrorism operation in the nation’s history.

Those arrested included a 26-year-old Carlton man, a 25-year-old Preston man, a 25-year-old Glenroy man and a man, 22, from Meadow Heights.

About 400 police raided homes in the northern Melbourne suburbs of Glenroy, Meadow Heights, Roxburgh Park, Broadmeadows, Westmeadows, Preston and Epping. They also raided homes at Carlton in inner Melbourne and Colac in southwestern Victoria.

“Police believe members of a Melbourne-based group have been undertaking planning to carry out a terrorist attack in Australia and allegedly involved in hostilities in Somalia,” a joint police statement said.

The men are expected to be charged with a range of terrorism-related offences.

Authorities believe the group is at an advanced stage of preparing to storm an Australian Army base, using automatic weapons, as punishment for Australia’s military involvement in Muslim countries. It is understood the men plan to kill as many soldiers as possible before they are themselves killed.

Since the men were all Australian citizens, as the missing Minnesota Somalis are American citizens, we can assume they arrived in Australia as refugees and possibly as small children as had the American Somalis.   They obviously didn’t appreciate the generosity of the humanitarians who lifted them out of  African poverty.  The call to take part in Islamic Jihad trumps the good life anyday.

The cell has been inspired by the Somalia-based terrorist movement al-Shabaab, with two Melbourne men, both Somalis, having travelled to Somalia in recent months to obtain training with the extremist organisation, which is aligned with al-Qa’ida.

One of those men has already returned to Melbourne. The other is still in Somalia.

The suspects include Australians of Somali and Lebanese decent, most of whom are labourers employed in Melbourne’s construction industry, or taxi drivers.

Asylum-seeking boatmen flooding into Australia

This is an update on previous posts (see our Australia category, here) we’ve done on the veritable flood of asylum seeking men from Muslim countries attempting to get into Australia.  For all you commenters who called me an Islamophobe at this post last week, where I said it was a lie to suggest that Islam welcomes the stranger, note all the flow of refugees is always away from Muslim countries and toward westernized countries.  You don’t see hordes of refugees beating on the doors of Saudi Arabia with its state-of-the art border fence, but Australia,  like America and Europe, is where everyone wants to be.

Saudi Arabia knows there would no longer be a Saudi Arabia if their doors were flung wide open.   Many Americans and Australians know it also (some Europeans get it but it may be too late for them)—open borders will destroy the prosperity of westernized democracies, but unfortunately the powers that be in both Australia and America are working really hard to do just that—-destroy the goose that lays the golden egg.

From the Brisbane Times today:

A BOAT carrying 194 people, the largest number of asylum seekers on a single vessel in eight years, has been intercepted 43 kilometres north-west of Christmas Island.

Australian officials had tracked the small wooden fishing boat, which defence sources said was overcrowded, since Friday after it left Indonesia.

Those on board, almost all men, are understood to be Afghan or Iraqi, and are being processed in immigration detention on Christmas Island. No children were aboard.

You can’t blame it all on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan because note that in 2001 the numbers were even higher and had gone down when the Howard government made it harder to get into Australia.

Arrivals by boat this year are well up on the 161 last year, but still far below the heights of 2001, when 5516 arrived.

Insisting their policies aren’t involved, the liberal Rudd government has been loosening restrictions on refugees and asylees, while claiming the flood is related to an increase in refugees worldwide.

Those who do not support flinging borders wide open, say it is those policies that are encouraging the boatmen and their human traffickers.

The Opposition spokeswoman on immigration, Sharman Stone, said the latest arrival could be directly attributed to the Federal Government’s softer immigration regime.

“This week we have seen another softening,” Dr Stone said, referring to legislation to remove charges levied against people for their time spent in immigration detention. “No wonder we have seen a boat this big.

Around the world countries are dealing with refugee issues in one way or another

Countries around the world are struggling with one issue or another involving refugees—here are 4 stories just this morning.

Canadians are seriously debating to what degree immigrants to Canada should be required to learn either English or French and to become knowledgeable and presumably accepting of Canadian Culture.

Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney has been raising eyebrows with his public musings about rewriting the rules of citizenship, by tweaking the test new citizens take. He asks ethnic audiences whether we are all on the same wavelength, or even speak the same (official) language, when it comes to citizenship.

“We want to make sure that people have a basic knowledge of our political institutions, our democratic traditions, our values, what some people call civic literacy,” Kenney said recently.

Japan and South Korea are continuing to be lobbied by the United Nations to take more refugees and asylees.

TOKYO, Japan, May 18 (UNHCR) – UNHCR’s Assistant High Commissioner for Protection Erika Feller has applauded Japan’s expanding hospitality towards refugees and called on South Korea to become a leading asylum country during a visit to the two Asian countries last week.

[….]

The Assistant High Commissioner said Japan has a refugee protection system in place, but suggested the country consider improving reception and assistance for
asylum seekers, as well as better integration of refugees.

[….]

Earlier last week, on her first official visit to South Korea for UNHCR, Feller called for more support from both government authorities and the Korean public to become a leading asylum country in the region.

In Denmark, nearly 300 Iraqis who have been ordered deported are staging a protest in a church.

Denmark rejects calls to re-examine the cases of Iraqi asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected and who are staging a sit-in in a Copenhagen church.

Afghan refugees escaped custody in Indonesia after they and some Iraqis were arrested trying to get to Australia.

Head of Malang Immigration Office, Soebroto said on Tuesday (19/5) the refugees were part of the 18 caught early on Sunday (17/5) in Probolinggo on their way to Bali. Eleven among the immigrants were from Afghanistan and the other seven were from Iraq.

[….]

Malang Immigration office said the Afghan refugees entered Indonesia from Malaysia after passing through Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Singapore. No report on where the Iraqi refugees joined the Afghans on their way to Australia through Bali.

And so on and so forth, the list goes on…
