Somali man walks into Canada; wanted by FBI for questioning asks for refugee status

Thanks to several readers for sending me this news yesterday, sorry I didn’t get to it when it was hot.  Somalis arrested near Emerson, Manitoba.

Another RRW geography lesson! Emerson, Manitoba is directly north of Minnesota, but also affords easy access from North Dakota. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerson,_Manitoba

From the National Post:

A Somali described as a “person-of-interest” to the FBI is being held in Manitoba after he and another man walked across the border from Minnesota and were captured by RCMP officers.

Ahmed Abdi Ismail and his travelling companion got 15 kilometres inland before they were picked up by members of the RCMP Integrated Border Enforcement Team on March 20.

Three days later, FBI agents flew to Winnipeg to interview Mr. Ismail, who is described in court documents only as “the subject of an FBI investigation for matters of security.”

Although he has been detained almost two months now, the reasons for the FBI probe remain a mystery. “All we know is that the FBI is interested in him and has asked for him to be held,” Anthony Navaneelan, his Toronto lawyer, said Wednesday.

The Canada Border Services Agency is conducting its own investigation into whether he should be deported under a section of the immigration law that applies to those engaged in terrorism, espionage and subversion.

Mr. Ismail has claimed refugee status in Canada.   [Wants protection from America!—ed]

Yesterday we had a report on Canada’s first Somali terror trial.

For new readers, we have a lot of posts over the years about problems with Somali refugees in “welcoming” Canada.

Was North Dakota “hatchet man” one of Lutheran Social Services refugees?

Sure sounds like it or there would have been no need for reporter Eric Crest to try to defend the refugee program in Fargo/Grand Forks, ND.  And, no one in this news account is denying that Kokouvi Mawuena Afidegnon is a refugee.  See our earlier report on the attack, here.

Only a few bad apples!

Hatchet man!

Here is the report at Valley News Live (be sure to watch the video!):

North Dakota has become a refuge for thousands of immigrants. In fact every year Lutheran Social Services assists over 300 people from various countries in getting to North Dakota to start a new life. But it’s no secret that some of those folks turn to a life of crime, sometimes very violent crimes. Valley News team’s Eric Crest gets at the under belly of this issue and exposes a more accurate portrayal of North Dakota’s newest residents. All in an effort to share with you how a string of crimes shouldn’t represent this new community as a whole.

After allegedly throwing a hatchet through a window this West Fargo man now faces charges of attempted murder. It’s when crimes like this occur within the African American demographic of our population that social media ignites. Every time a perceived foreigner commits a similar act of violence comment get out of control.

One person recently wrote of the crime this way, “if he’s not from here, send him back to where he is from.”

Another comment says, “that’s what we get for letting him in our states.”

And one more comment tries to point the finger directly at what he deems the problem. He stated “don’t want knife wielding neighbors from Muslim countries? Here’s the contact info for Lutheran Social Services.”

We asked LSS if they believe they give new Americans the tools they really need to succeed?

“If someone falls off the path it’s a disappointment. It’s sad, and not what we would hope,” says Darci Asche of Lutheran Social Services.

Lutheran Social Services makes clear that it only takes care of refugees for a limited time—until their federal grant money runs out!

“We pay the first month rent and deposit. We furnish the apartment, we fill it with household items like beds and furniture. We do it all through a federal grant,” explains Asche.

Financial assistance is only provided for eight months. Which is basically enough to cover the cost of rent. They want to get these new Americans into the work force so they can become self sufficient.  [They may want to get them a job, but the reality is quite different!—ed]

[….]

Lutheran Social Services says that while they do offer limited financial support for about the first year of a refugees stay in America, it doesn’t last forever. Adding that most [ ed?] of their clients find gainful employment rather quickly. All of the services that they help refugees and immigrants get in contact with are also available for the general public.  [Yes, and we all know that we have a welfare money tree growing in Washington and each state capital!—ed]

Read it all!

Reader Gary reminded me just this week of the murder conviction of a Somali in North Dakota who killed four there in 2011.  See our North Dakota archive here.

For new readers!  When we began writing RRW, all of the media coverage of refugees was ridiculously sweet (I called the stories “refugees-see-first-snow stories.”) and so we felt that some of what we needed to do, besides educating the general public about how the program works, was to BALANCE the news coverage so that communities might have a more realistic view of what they were getting themselves into when “welcoming the stranger.”

I’m amazed these days at the increasing number of crime stories involving refugees and I think it’s a function of two things—the numbers are now too great (statistically more bad apples would be in the group) and the cultures from which they come are increasingly alien to our way of life.  When you watch the video associated with this news story, note that the blond woman who heads Lutheran Social Services talks about her grandparents coming to America and how they made it.

There were a couple of huge differences between the era that saw her family arrive and today’s refugees.  First, our country was built by Europeans and her ancestors were also European, and secondly THERE WAS NO SOCIAL SAFETY NET (AKA WELFARE).  Her grandparents had to make it on their own or return to their home country.

And, in fact, the numbers ultimately became so great (early in the 1900’s) that we actually had at least a four-decade long hiatus in legal immigration until Ted Kennedy in 1965 succeeded in passing the Immigration and Nationality Act. In 1980 Kennedy again was the chief sponsor of the Refugee Act (which set up the present system where non-profit contractors are paid to resettle refugees from all over the world).

Every time I hear that old canard or a reference to it—we are a nation of immigrants—I want to barf because it is so misinformed!

Somali stowaway update: kid to be interviewed by police, Mom on the way from Africa?

This is an update of the story that shocked the security world when a Somali teen successfully hid himself in the wheel well of a passenger jet and survived the flight from California to Hawaii.  Our first post and subsequent updates are here.

The mom in Ethiopia: I’ll be there soon so the US taxpayer can take care of all of us! Elias Asmare AP

From AP:

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) – Police said Tuesday they plan to interview a California teen who stowed away on a Hawaii-bound flight two weeks ago, surviving sub-freezing temperatures in the wheel well of a jetliner as it crossed the Pacific Ocean.

[….]

Law enforcement agents want to question Abdi about how he climbed over a fence at San Jose International Airport, then got into the wheel well of a Boeing 767 and survived the April 20 flight at 35,000 feet despite the cold and a lack of oxygen.

Authorities have searched the airport perimeter and found no signs of anyone going over or under the fence. A review of video surveillance also didn’t show Abdi, but there are gaps in the coverage. As a result of the breach, the airport is adding more cameras.

[….]

Abdi’s mother, Ubah Mohammed Abdule, lives in a refugee camp in eastern Ethiopia and told The Associated Press that the boy longed to see her but his father told him she was dead.

[….]

She said her asylum application is about to be concluded, and she is looking forward to seeing her family in the USA.

Yippee!  Soon the US taxpayer will be supporting Mom and her two younger kids while she fights a legal battle to gain custody of Abdi (who will pay for that?).

First Canadian Somali stands trial for allegedly helping Al-Shabaab

We have already had several trials and several guilty verdicts for Somali refugees in America who conspired, or actually went to Africa to help the Somali jihadists.   Key words ‘Somali terror trial’ brings up these past reports here at RRW.

Here is news about Canada’s first Somali terror trial.    By the way, Al-Shabaab is often spelled Al-Shabab.

Mohamed Hersi arriving in court last month

From the National Post:

A 28-year-old former security guard, Mr. Hersi is the first person to be charged with attempting to leave Canada to join a terrorist group. A second charge alleges he counselled an undercover Toronto police officer to take part in terrorist activity — namely joining Al-Shabab.

He has denied the allegations, saying he did not support Al-Shabab and had not planned on joining. When he was arrested at Toronto’s Pearson airport in March 2011, he was on his way to Cairo to study Arabic, he testified.

As the Crown got its first chance to grill Mr. Hersi on the witness stand Tuesday, he struggled to explain why, despite being trained to respond to security threats, he had failed to report the undercover police officer sent to befriend him.

Although the officer had confided that he was on his way to Somalia to join Al-Shabab, Mr. Hersi never turned him in or broke off their relationship. Instead, he gave the officer advice on how to travel to Somalia and buy guns, how much money to bring and how to avoid arousing suspicion.

He also told the officer to read an article by pro-Al-Qaeda ideologue Anwar Awlaki, and suggested he might return to Canada to “take care of” those who insulted the Muslim prophet Muhammad. “Don’t be scared,” Mr. Hersi told him.

There is more, read it all.

Buffalo: In mecca of diversity, Puerto Rican kid kills Iraqi kid

Buffalo, NY has become a grand experiment in multiculturalism as resettlement agencies pour refugees into the area and other NGOs make the area a magnet for illegal aliens and phoney asylum seekers.  See this 2012 post about the changing demographics of Buffalo—-Christians and Jews moving out, Muslims moving in.

For more on Buffalo immigrant crimes see our entire Buffalo archive here.  When immigrants supposedly rebuild decaying cities, crime abounds.

Don’t miss this 2013 post about the US State Department sending an official delegation to Buffalo late last year — problems developing?  Gee, I wonder if the State Department will help foot the bill for court expenses that the local welcoming Erie County taxpayers will have with this trial.  Heck, they will need a Spanish interpreter and an Iraqi court interpreter!

Thanks to several readers for sending links on the latest murder case involving a refugee, this time as the victim—‘pungentpeppers’ and Creeping Sharia especially.

Mourners leave the Masjid Al-Eman Mosque on Connecticut Street after the funeral of 13-year-old Ameer Al Shammari, Tuesday, May 6, 2014. (Derek Gee/Buffalo News)

From Buffalo News (emphasis mine):

A 13-year-old Black Rock boy has confessed to killing Ameer Al Shammari, also 13, law enforcement officials say.

The boy, identified by authorities as Jean Sanchez, was arrested at about 3:30 a.m. today after homicide investigators developed leads that helped them to identify the suspect.

Sanchez has been charged as an adult with second-degree murder, an official told The Buffalo News.

[….]

Neighbors and family friends believe the killing was tied to Ameer’s attempt to retrieve an iPhone that was stolen from him Friday. Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda said today during a news conference that the stolen phone may figure into the killing.

[….]

Ameer’s funeral was held this morning in the Masjid al-Eiman & Islamic Center at 444 Connecticut St. The casket was brought into the mosque at about 9:45 a.m.

[….]

After the funeral, Ali Kadhum, executive director of the newly formed Iraqi American Society, described the family as shattered by their son’s death.

“The father told me he is not able to carry this sadness,” said Kadhum, who also serves as president of the Buffalo Immigrant Refugee Empowerment Coalition.

For more details on Sanchez  and how the police think the murder happened go here, also at Buffalo News.

The murdered boy had been in the US for 18 months.  There are questions about whether a gang might have been involved in his beating death.

By the way, Iraqis represent the largest ethnic refugee group we admitted to the US in fiscal year 2013—just short of 20,000 (click here).   I’m pretty sure we are approaching the 100,000 number for Iraqis invited to America (no time to dig out the numbers this morning).
