Like to learn a useful foreign language? Try Somali

That is not my title, it is the title of a Seattle Times article this past Thursday.

Here is how the article begins (emphasis mine):

At Foster High in Tukwila, an evening class is helping people learn to speak Somali. It’s not easy to learn, but in a region with a lot of Somali immigrants, learning it is not only is useful in the work world, but can also build community.

The steam from sweet Somali tea floats out of white plastic-foam cups as a handful of people weave in between desks tentatively greeting each other: “Barasho wanaagsan” (good to meet you).

This cheery Tukwila classroom, on loan from Foster High School, is hosting a series of weekly Somali-language classes through December.

It’s the second such course offered by the nonprofit Somali Community Services Coalition and it’s a rare opportunity for those who work and live with our region’s sizable Somali community.

“There’s no Somali-language classes available elsewhere,” says Nick Valera of the coalition, “I think there’s one that started in Minnesota recently … other than that there’s nothing that we’re aware of.”

Tonight’s students are paying $150 and spending one evening a week here for the next three months for a number of different reasons.

You gotta laugh, one commenter said another reason to learn Somali is that Somalia is a great place to vacation.

And, I’m thinking of another reason—-that hopefully our FBI is training agents in the Somali language.

Members of the SCSC from their “advocacy and civic engagement” page at their website. YOU pay for their advocacy! So who are they raising their fists at?

But, my interest in this article was in finding out more about the “nonprofit” Somali Community Services Coalition.

They are obviously an ECBO (Ethnic Community Based Organization) aka Ethnic Self-Help Organization (the newer federal terminology).

ECBOs modeled after ACORN

Do you remember when investigator James O’Keefe exposed ACORN?   Basically ACORN was funded by you (your tax dollars) and its function was to teach poor people how to access their welfare goodies, AND to community organize—sign up new voters, stir up chaos and generally push voters to the Left, to the Democrat Party.   That is what an ECBO does on a smaller scale and their political action is geared to getting taxpayer goodies and “rights” for THEIR people.

We have a whole category on ECBOs here, if you want to learn more.

Although there are federally-funded ECBOs for a wide variety of ethnic group, the Somalis have been very aggressive in setting them up—-some cities have more than one ECBO just for Somalis.

Here is a recent list of grants awarded to ethnic “self-help” groups at the Office of Refugee Resettlement (that is in the Dept. of Health and Human Services).

Now, here is the history of the Somali Community Services Coalition of Seattle.  Remarkably they say the following about the Somali resettlement numbers in the US—that they are four times larger than we have ever been able to document.

Resettlement agencies began placing Somalis in the United States in 1992 and, in 19 years, these agencies have overseen the resettlement of nearly 415,000 Somali refugees in the U.S.

As we have said many times, Americans have the right to congregate and form groups of all sorts (not groups for criminal activity of course), but why should taxpayers be forced to support goals like these (again, from the SCSC website):

When seeking aid, East Africans rely on community-based organizations, like SCSC, because of a shared language, history, and culture. SCSC remains grounded in our mission to enhance the well-being of Somalis throughout King County, empower families and individuals, and preserve the community’s rich cultural heritage. We fulfill our mission and respond to the needs of our community by offering immigration and employment assistance, community outreach, cultural events, social services and referrals, advocacy, an after-school tutoring program, and a youth summer enrichment program.

Why should the average hardworking US taxpayer have to pay for this?

Here is the SCSC’s most recent available Form 990.

Check out page 9, you will note that they took in $311,170 that year and $175,335 of that was from GOVERNMENT GRANTS.

So, again, why are we paying for Somali (or any particular group’s) “advocacy?”

Mainstream media: Somalis just “found their way” to America

In the wake of the brutal slaughter in Kenya (don’t open this link if you have a weak stomach) by Somali Jihadists a little over a week ago, I’m struck by the fact  that the mainstream media is running one story after another about America’s growing Somali population, but the word “refugee” never makes it into the telling.   I can’t say never, but I just reviewed a bunch of recent stories in The New York Times, The Washington Post and Time magazine and searched for the “R” word. It was not there!

A seriously wounded girl is carried away from the Westgate mall in Nairobi as Al-Shabaab’s terror reign unfolded.

And, by the way, I still haven’t seen any further report on whether Americans have been officially identified among the killers.  Have you?

Do you think the average reader, someone not following immigration issues daily, wonders how a particular group of immigrants ‘found their way’ to America?  I think they do, so why does the media rarely mention the legal programs through which the US government is changing America’s demographic make-up?

Below is an example from a New York Times story entitled, ‘Somali Community in U.S. Fears New Wave of Stigma After Kenya Attack.’

Would this help you know anything about how the Somalis got here, how they in fact became a “community” (through the US State Department’s Refugee Resettlement Program going back three decades)?   The “R” word does not appear in the story:

More than 32,000 people of Somali ancestry live in Minnesota, census figures show, and local leaders say the true number is far higher. Some came in the 1990s after fleeing civil war, and others are their children, many of them born in this country.    [By the way, the number is way higher than 32,000 in Minnesota, in addition to the tens of thousands in other preferred resettlement states—ed]

They “came….after fleeing civil war.”   What!  they just got on a plane and said “here we are America,” “let us in,” and then picked Minnesota on a map?

Regular readers of RRW know how it happened (here and here), but do the reporters not know or do they deliberately cover-up the truth about LEGAL immigration programs gone wrong?

By the way, there is a good article (at Powerline, hat tip: Judy) about the problems the media is glossing-over with the Somali “community” in Minnesota, but it too doesn’t use the word refugee.  Why is that?

Sweden: Somali family reunification numbers below expectations

One reason—a DNA test requirement to prove they are blood relatives.

Somalis make up the largest immigrant group in Sweden followed by Afghans and Iraqis (according to Scancomark). We will wait and see what Syrian immigration does to the numbers.

Yesterday we told you about Sweden’s exportation of Islamic terrorists (aka Swedish citizens), and we have written extensively about Sweden opening its doors wide to Syrians, but here is an article that almost makes them sound crestfallen because their Somali numbers aren’t materializing as the welcoming Swedes thought they would.

From The Local (emphasis mine):

The Swedish Migration Board (Migrationsverket) was prepared for 20,000 applications following changes that made it easier for family members to apply for residency in Sweden to be reunited with Somalis who had already migrated to Sweden.

However, so far only 7,430* Somalis have applied after a court ruling that allowed DNA tests to be used to prove family relations, Sveriges Radio (SR) reported.

Authorities plan to adjust forecasts downward to 8,600 as early as this month.

Habane Abdulkadir Hassan of Sweden’s Somali association Somaliska riksförbundet told SR there are likely several reasons for the lower numbers.

Among other things, the high unemployment rate among Somalis in Sweden, a lack of identification documents to confirm Somali nationality**, as well as new hope of a better life in Somalia have all contributed to fewer family reunification residency applications.

Around 70 percent of Somalis who applied for residency in Sweden are expected to have their applications approved, according to SR.

* For some perspective on how large even this number is for tiny Sweden, the US has admitted a very large number of Somalis this fiscal year—-6,679 (as of August 31).  Go here for the stats:  Map Arrivals by Nationality as of 31 Aug 2013

** On this issue of Somali identity, we reported here in 2012 that other Africans (Djiboutians in this case) were flocking to Sweden pretending to be Somalis.

We write about Sweden frequently because it is the ‘canary in the coal mine’ for what happens when a Socialist country allows almost unlimited migration from Muslim countries.   Click here for our whole ‘Sweden’ archive.   One post you should see, if you missed it, is this one on the recent Muslim riots and the public response.

Minneapolis Somalis still being recruited by al-Shabab to fulfill “religious duty”

I don’t really want to post this because I have been writing about this for five years and I’m sick of them and sick of the mainstream media that is five years late addressing this serious issue.  It takes a blood bath in Kenya for the supposed journalists to get off their duffs.

Abdirizak Bihi testified about youth radicalization at a House Homeland Security hearing in 2011. CAIR has been trying to shut him up!

This is from USA Today and it doesn’t have anything new that we haven’t discussed here ad nauseum.  They even brought back Omar Jamal for a cameo appearance.

Long time readers know that we call Jamal the “Somali Jesse Jackson” because he manages to be quoted anytime a Somali gets in trouble anywhere in the US.  He originally came to the US illegally, was convicted of immigration fraud, but has simply been movin’ on up!

By the way, I will be reporting the minute we get official confirmation (or at least the minute I hear about it!) that there were or were not American killers (former refugees) in Kenya.

From AP at USA Today:

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Leaders of the nation’s largest Somali community say some of their young men are still being enticed to join the terror group that has claimed responsibility for the deadly mall attack in Kenya, despite a concentrated effort to shut off what authorities call a “deadly pipeline” of men and money.

Six years have passed since Somali-American fighters began leaving Minnesota to become part of al-Shabab [sometimes spelled al-Shabaab—ed]. Now the Somali community is dismayed over reports that a few of its own might have been involved in the violence at the Westgate Mall in Nairobi.

“One thing I know is the fear is growing,” said Abdirizak Bihi, whose nephew was among at least six men from Minnesota who have died in Somalia. More are presumed dead.

Since 2007, at least 22 young men have left Minnesota to join al-Shabab, including two who did so last summer. Unconfirmed reports that two more left earlier this month have deepened concerns.

Here’s Jamal!

Al-Shabab means “The Youth” in Arabic. The group uses a mixture of religion, nationalism and deception to lure young people, said Omar Jamal*, a longtime local activist who now serves as the first secretary for the Somali mission to the United Nations.

Former assistant U.S. attorney states clearly what this is all about—-Jihad is a religious duty—a duty to fight!

Anders Folk was an assistant U.S. attorney in Minneapolis for several years of the recruiting investigation before leaving for private practice. Al-Shabab’s recruiting was at least as effective after the Ethiopians left as before, he said.

“Al Shabab’s recruiting technique was essentially a call to jihad, that this is a religious duty,” Folk said. “It was a call to jihad to come and fight.”

* For more on Omar Jamal type his name into our search function and I bet we have two dozen posts on him, maybe more.

What Somalis are doing for RRW (not to mention the image of Islam and “refugees”)

Our readership at RRW is going through the roof and it’s almost exclusively because the public is finally beginning to search for information, and understand better, how so many Somalis have “found their way” to America.  Of course we know they didn’t find their way here, but were brought here over more than three decades now through the US State Department’s Refugee Resettlement program with the help of nine major federal contractors.  The mall massacre in Kenya with speculation (no official confirmation yet that I know of) that some of the killers are Americans (former refugees) has prompted this latest round of interest.

See the disturbing images from Nairobi in the UK Daily Mail (hat tip: Ed).

Thousands of new readers visited RRW in the last few days.  And, I’m happy to report that we have exceeded our goal of adding 30 new subscribers in the month of September.  We have 43 new subscribers with five days left in the month!

Almost every search term yesterday related to Somalis.  Here (below) is what people are searching (I took out about 5 searches that didn’t involve Somalis).

To answer the question, which administration brought Somalis to Minnesota?—the answer is all of them since the 1980’s.  George W. Bush had some really big years following 9/11!   Check out our numbers here.

Our most-read post yesterday was this one from 2011:  ‘Why so many Somalis in Minneapolis?‘
