South Africa sends America a message: will we hear it?

We have written on many occasions (start here) about the violence and brutality in that country that was supposed to be the shining light on the African continent.    The Rainbow Nation’s doors were flung open to immigrants of all hues as Apartheid crumbled.  Now South Africa is wracked by what the elites are calling “xenophobic” attacks on foreigners.    I guess they can’t call it racism because both sides are predominantly black.

I was surprised to see today that the Washington Post is reporting on the story.   It seems that camps set up in the wake of riots last spring are being dismantled by the government and refugees are being told its safe to return to their neighborhoods.

Five months have passed since more than 60 people were killed in anti-foreigner beatings and burnings that shocked a nation that touts diversity. Thousands of immigrants moved to about 10 refugee-style camps that seemed incongruous in Africa’s most developed country. In recent weeks, the government has torn most down, saying the neighborhoods are safe again.

But aid workers and immigrants who fled to this spot north of Pretoria — mostly Somalis, Ethiopians and Congolese — disagree. They say the camps’ endurance and continued reports of violence underscore how little the South African government has done to tackle a long-standing hostility toward immigrants that reached a tipping point in the spring.

Even though the camps are being turned into junk heaps, refugees are not budging, the Post says some are holding out hope of third country resettlement.

The powers that be in South Africa are still trying to figure out how these horrible events could have happened, afterall this is a country that is not supposed to notice difference—diversity is beautiful and multiculturalism rules.

The attacks prompted soul-searching in a nation whose liberation leaders were given refuge throughout Africa during the apartheid era. Many South Africans criticized the government as failing to help the downtrodden, who view immigrants as competition for jobs. Others saw the violence as a symbol of ousted president Thabo Mbeki’s failed strategy with Zimbabwe’s president, Robert Mugabe, which they say led to an influx of immigrants from that country.

Some, including Mbeki and ANC leader Jacob Zuma, said the brutality was not xenophobic — as it has been widely labeled — but rather, as Zuma put it, “thuggery and criminality.”

But surveys over the past decade by the Southern African Migration Project have found that hostility toward outsiders is higher in South Africa than in most nations where comparable data exist. In a recent report, the project said warnings by researchers and elected officials about the potential for violence were mostly ignored, leading to a “perfect xenophobic storm” this year.

Here is the lesson Americans should take from South Africa:

1)  There are too many people in Africa with too few resources.

2)  A prosperous country cannot survive open borders.

3)  Human nature is such that people will fight for what they believe belongs to them and their family (jobs, a home, a neighborhood, a bit of land and so on.)

South Africa will never solve its immigration problems as long as they are stuck on psychoanalyzing xenophobia.    America will never solve its immigration problems as long as the national debate is stuck on characterizing every critic of our immigration policy as a racist.

A country will only survive when it is strong enough to set limits on immigration that are not only numerical but also take into account the culture and education of those being admitted—we must discriminate!

Saudis deporting Somalis while we give them tea parties and welcome them to America

Update October 10th:   The airport was opened yesterday to allow this plane from Saudi Arabia to land, story here.

I don’t often use this particular internet epithet, but for this story I will.   OMG!  Saudi Arabia is deporting Muslims.

Saudi Arabia, uber rich home of Mecca—the epicenter of Islam, the Religion of Peace— is deporting Somali illegal aliens back to Somalia.    Yet we welcome them to America!

We probably wouldn’t have ever heard this story except that a planeload of deportees from Saudi Arabia was recently refused landing at Mogadishu’s airport.

A plane from Saudi Arabia which was carrying Somalis who had been deported from that country is said to have been denied clearance to land at Hargeysa airport.

The plane is said to have tried to land at Mogadishu airport but aborted after being informed that Mogadishu airport was insecure. It then proceeded to Hargeysa to offload its human cargo. However, airport officials declined to have it land there forcing it to fly back to Saudi Arabia.

Reports say the plane was carrying Somalis who had been deported from Saudi Arabia and was told about the insecurity at the airport after it was established that it was carrying the Somali deportees.

Somali migrants in Saudi Arabia are usually deported back to the country soon after they are arrested by Saudi police.

Reports say Jeddah prisons are bursting at the seams with illegal Somali migrants who cannot be deported back to the country.

Remember the Somali illegal aliens who arrived in Malta and the US State Department gave them a tea party and a plane ticket to Colorado!

To learn more about how we have invited so many Somalis into the US go here.

Speaking of Somalis who need to go into the night (and out of the country)!

Part I

While I was away at immigration meetings this weekend, Blulitespecial did a little scouting around the internet for us and came up with a three part series about Somali violence in Minneapolis.  It’s a head-scratching exercise in which good Somalis are trying to figure out how other Somalis have gone bad.

To avoid writing another opus, I’ll bring it to you in pieces.   Read Part I here.

Notice we have Omar (Jesse Jackson) Jamal with his nose in the issue.   See this post about how Jamal is involved in things beyond Minneapolis and interjected himself into the Somali Cyanide case in Denver recently.

Here he is weighing in on the Somali murders in Minneapolis:

Omar Jamal, director of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center, which provides legal assistance to the community and deals with law enforcement, said surrounding communities should care.

“If the students at the West Bank of the U of M act as if this is business as usual, then they’re not paying enough attention,” Jamal said. “These people are going through hell.”

Hell of their own making!   And, it’s all about the “pain.”

Community members will merely continue to live through the problems, Jamal said, though many will slowly disappear back to Somalia or simply away from Cedar-Riverside.

Wherever they go, he said, they’ll take their pain with them.

“There’s nothing much the community can do,” Jamal said. “They can just go gently into the reach of the night.”

So I wonder why ‘Jesse Jackson’ Jamal hasn’t gone back to Somalia after his conviction for Immigration fraud?

The resettlement agencies “ambulance chase refugees”

This is an incredibly revealing story yesterday in Mshale (The African Community Newspaper) entitled, “Why are African Immigrants Settling in Minnesota?”

Speaking at a conference, Africa Today, Wynfred Russell, the director at the Center for Multicultural Services at Normandale Community College had this to say about the volags (supposedly voluntary agencies) contracted by the federal government to resettle refugees:

Russell attributes the large settlement of refugees to the presence of ten refugee humanitarian organizations in Minnesota who settle refugees here through the American Refugee Resettlement Program. These organizations he asserts are aggressive in resettling refugees in Minnesota: “they ambulance chase refugees.”

The cycle, he says, continues because these organizations need to continue receive funding to stay in business so they settle refugees in Minnesota so that they (the organizations) can offer services, such as trauma therapy, cultural adjustment among other social services to these new Americans.

Russell observed that “unfortunately, many people make money in the name of helping poor people.” He also said that not all humanitarian organizations and people were out to make money out of refugees.

Once refugees are settled through the American Refugee Resettlement Program, they bring in their families and soon a thriving community begins to establish itself; another reason explaining the large number of refugees in Minnesota.

I hope the editor of the Ft. Morgan Times, who doesn’t get the connection between volags and the federal government sending more refugees to Ft. Morgan, is taking note.

Interestingly, in another link on the same page of Mshale is a story about the high rate of unemployment among black Americans, but the article has not one word about the high immigration numbers from Africa and the fact that immigrants are getting relatively high paying jobs in food processing plants.  Are those jobs American born blacks won’t do?

We have written on several previous occasions about tension building between American born blacks and African immigrants (archive here).

Immigrant voting strategy in key swing state of Virginia

This is a post I wrote back on July 6th, but because I’ve just been hearing so much on the news today about the swing state of Virginia, I thought it might be timely to repost the whole thing here now.

Somalis, Ethiopians and Kenyans,  many having entered the US as refugees which puts them on the fast track to citizenship, are organizing for Democratic candidate for President, Barack Obama.  Wow!  Can you believe it!  Here is what the Washington Post had to say:

From coast to coast, Somali, Ethiopian, Nigerian and Kenyan Americans are knocking on the doors of their fellow African immigrants, registering new citizens to vote, raising money and preaching Obama’s mantra of hope and change. They hope that his prominence will change their status as one of the nation’s least-recognized immigrant groups, and that he will one day provide aid to help ease the turmoil and poverty in countries such as Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan.

One Somali said Obama is like a son, one of them.

“Obama is one generation away from Africa,” said Eyow, who immigrated to the United States nearly 30 years ago. “I have nothing against my brothers and sisters, black people who were born here, but his father is like me. His father was an immigrant….”

Although Eyow says he has nothing against his black brothers who were born here, we have been chronicaling the tensions that are building in the black community partially resulting from the growing realization on the part of native-born black Americans that immigrants are taking their jobs (among other brewing conflicts).

The Post goes on to report that the Migration Policy Institute (in the right hand column you can check for the number of foreign born voters in your state) says the numbers of African immigrants aren’t high enough to swing the election, but organizers have figured out how to have influence in key states like Virginia.

Endale said that in the District, Ethiopians for Obama will not try to influence the national race between Obama and Republican Sen. John McCain (Ariz.). Instead, the group will target Ethiopian households in the Northern Virginia suburbs.

“There’s a possibility of getting 10,000 Ethiopians in Virginia,” Endale said. “That could be a game-changer.”

Is anyone checking to make sure they are all citizens and eligible to vote?
