IRC’s Rupp says they are headed to South Africa

I knew it!   The Refugee Resettlement Industry is going to soon agitate to bring refugees from South Africa to the US.   It is one thing if the International Rescue Committee works in a country, but it usually follows that they press for refugees to be resettled in the US.

In that same interview in which Rupp says they are working with the Presidential campaigns to get more money in the next Administration, Rupp says they are headed to South Africa.  This is in response to a question about how do they decide what countries to focus on:

We have emergency response teams, so [in] any conflict-generated emergency we will almost certainly be present because that’s what we do. We don’t ordinarily do natural disasters. By and large our specialty is conflict-generated emergencies. We always have a handful of countries. We’re probably going to go into South Africa to work with Zimbabwean refugees. There are huge numbers of Zimbabweans; the country is in free fall.

It is not clear from this if he is saying Zimbabwee is in free fall or South Africa, but from what we’ve seen in our reporting on South Africa, I would say South Africa qualifies for the “free fall” category too!

As the Rainbow Nation implodes, Somalis in South Africa are pushing for resettlement in the West.   See our category on Africa.

Naples! Nepal! Somalis wanted the former and got the latter!

Somali illegal immigrants in Nepal are protesting and say they were tricked by human traffickers.  They thought they were being taken to Naples (Italy!) and instead were dropped off in Nepal.   Nepal, which has recently managed to get a US promise to take 60,000 Bhutanese off their hands, is trying to figure out what to do with the Somalis.  From the BBC:

Somali refugees living in Nepal have been demonstrating in the capital Kathmandu to gain official recognition by the government. [Must be recognition of refugee status.]

They say their lives are miserable because they are not allowed to work and are threatened with heavy fines if they try to leave the country.

Many of the Somalis say they were tricked into coming to Nepal by people traffickers in Mogadishu.

Some say they were told they were being flown to the Italian city of Naples.

The government says it is aware of the refugees and is discussing what to do about them.

Of course, these Somalis would have been illegal immigrants to Italy too, and that country is having its problems with African lawbreakers.

I bet you anything the government of Nepal asks the US to take them.  What the heck, 60 or 70 Somalis is nothing slipped in with the 60,000 Bhutanese.

If you think that sounds crazy, just a reminder we have taken Somali illegal aliens from Malta.  It is not so farfetched an idea.

Making Keith angry in South Africa

A blogger in South Africa, obviously doesn’t like what I say here at RRW about the Rainbow Nation.

Keith said:

I was directed by an acquaintance to a blog titled, “Refugee Resettlement Watch”.
(Click on the Blog Title above to go there)

This lady, presumably American, has a lot to say about the open border policies of South Africa, racial conflict and the spate of Xenophopic violence we saw here recently. Much of this is controversial and would likely lead to heated debate among any group of south Africans… so don’t follow the link if you do not wish to loose your cool today!

Keith, I invite you to tell me how I have it wrong.   I do believe what is happening in South Africa with open borders, too many people, too few resources (jobs etc.) is not about xenophobia, but the reality of too many people, too few resources, agressive immigrant cultures and your indigenous poor fighting for their bit of a better life.     I think South Africa is a lesson for America.

I just went back and looked at recent posts on South Africa’s “xenophobic” problems, ones you linked to, to see what you are so angry with, and for the life of me I don’t know.  So tell me!

Mentally inferior Black South Africans don’t welcome smarter Somalis

That is not my title!  That is the very improbable title given to yet another rehash of the South African “xenophobia” story we have written about many times.  The title is from an article in Medeshi, an on-line publication about the Horn of Africa.  I really haven’t a clue where they are coming from (well maybe that title gives me a little clue!).

Anyway the article is, as I said, another rehash of the supposed “xenophobia” going on in South Africa where local black South Africans are rioting against other African immigrants many of whom have arrived illegally in the Rainbow Nation that Nelson Mandela created.   Obviously since all involved in the violence are black, they can’t use the word “racist,” so “xenophobia” is the word of choice to explain the behavior of the “mentally inferior” locals.   Sound familiar!

Here is how the “mentally inferior” describe the problem:

Our problem is simple: We are hungry. We are angry. And the Somalis are undercutting us.

Does that sound like a mentally deficient statement to you?

Then here is the only new information this article provides.   All of the other articles I’ve written about and even this article until this point suggests the violence is directed at mostly the arrogant Somalis.   Here a Somali claims that they avoided much of the violence by NOT assimilating.  Frankly that makes no sense to me, and contradicts the first part of this article.

…. the Somali community was still vulnerable because of the differences between Somalis and other cultures, said Alas Jama, 43, a Somali from the Cape Town suburb of Bellville.

Although his countrymen had integrated well when it came to establishing businesses in South Africa’s townships, many preferred not to weave their lives into that of the local community. “Because we are Muslim, many Somalis prefer to marry amongst themselves because of the sensitivities associated with mixing cultures,” he commented.

“Somali people’s culture is very different to those you find in Southern African communities and this leads to problems. Many Somalis don’t feel comfortable taking on local cultural traits, which has the affect of alienating them to some degree,” said Jama, who helped coordinate relief efforts during the xenophobic violence.

“Because other Africans from around the region have integrated better with the South African communities in terms of living amongst and marrying locals, they were the first to be targeted by the mobs that took over,” he said.

“Somalis created their own jobs, opened their own shops and stayed amongst themselves, and this really helped them to be spared during the killings here at that time,” Jama said.
“They lost property and had shops destroyed, but it was those who had integrated best who suffered the most from violence, because they initially felt safe and did not leave in time.”

Huh?   Staying separate, not assimilating, being differant all helped spare them from violence?   Lets go back to the title of this article and ask ourselves—who are the mentally inferior?

Search “South Africa” for all we’ve written on the topic.

Go back to my story of last night from Grand Island, NE and notice a pattern.  Somalis have no plans to assimilate anywhere.

Mainstream media discovers the Somali meatpacker conflict

First it was the New York Times this morning and now it appears that USA Today is in on the action.  In this case, I really am glad the mainstream media reporters are a bunch of sheep.

“Prayer leads to work disputes” in USA Today doesn’t add a whole lot of new information from what we have been telling you for a month or so now, but check out the photo of one of the Somalis planning to file a complaint.

Abdi Mohamed, 28, came to the USA as a refugee from Somalia a year ago. For most of his eight months at the Grand Island plant, his boss let him slip away for seven minutes at sunset to pray in the locker room, allowing him to balance his job cutting beef with a tenet of Islam.

“Anytime I’m not (praying), I’m damaging my relationship with God,” he says through a translator.

Mohamed, who lost his job Sept. 19, says he plans to file a discrimination complaint. “We are refugees to this country,” he says, “and now we are made to be refugees within America.”

That is one mean looking dude on the right.  The complaint filer must be the one on the left.  If anyone has a little investigation time, I bet the one on the right (the mean dude) is one of the community organizers.  Could it be mouthpiece Graen Isse?

By the way, hurry on over to USA Today  where a lot of hot comments are flying around on this story.  Once before when USA Today did something controversial about refugees the comments were very quickly yanked.

For new readers there are a couple of posts you need to check out.   The first is our research on how many Somalis have been admitted to the US by the State Department here.   And, the other is that as a result of DNA testing that showed that 80% of East Africans (including Somalis) trying to enter the US through the family reunification part of refugee resettlement were committing fraud, the program is presently suspended.
