Jobs Americans won’t do? Apparently none!

Here is a recent article from USA Today confirming something we know well—Americans (and refugees) are lining up for jobs as illegal immigrants are busted.

When federal agents descended on six meatpacking plants owned by Swift & Co. in December 2006, they rounded up nearly 1,300 suspected illegal immigrants that made up about 10% of the labor force at the plants.

But the raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents did not cripple the company or the plants. In fact, they were back up and running at full staff within months by replacing those removed with a significant number of native-born Americans, according to a report by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS).*

That was the most extreme example of what has become an increasingly common result of the raids: “They were very beneficial to American workers,” according to Vanderbilt University professor Carol Swain.

“Whenever there’s an immigration raid, you find white, black and legal immigrant labor lining up to do those jobs that Americans will supposedly not do,” said Swain, who teaches law and political science.

We have reported many times on these pages that refugee resettlement agencies are setting up offices and providing labor to meatpacking companies throughout the US.

Exactly who is filling the jobs has varied, depending on the populations surrounding the plants:

Throughout the Great Plains, a new wave of legal immigrants is filling the void, according to Jill Cashen, spokeswoman for the United Food and Commercial Workers union, which represents 1.3 million people who work in the food-processing industry. Plants are refilling positions with newly arrived immigrants from places such as Sudan, Somalia and Southeast Asia.

*USA Today refers to a Center for Immigration Studies report but although it links other things in the article, never links the study.  I assume it is this one from August.

By the way, one of the earliest and clearest examples of rushing in to fill the gap left by raids on illegal aliens employed in meatpacking is this one where the Clinton Administration brought in Bosnian refugees to work in Iowa meatpacking plants.

New group launched to educate about the Islamization of America

From New English Review:

WASHINGTON – Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) will hold an organizational launch and press conference with speakers and panel discussion on September 25th, to coincide with Islam on Capitol Hill Day and the 220th anniversary of the passage of the Bill of Rights.

[….]

SIOA’s mission is to educate the American people about the political doctrine of Islam, its history, Sharia (Islamic Law), and Jihad. SIOA believes that Sharia Law is incompatible with our Constitution and Bill of Rights.

So what’s this Islam on Capital Hill Day?  Pamela Geller at Atlas Shrugs has the inside story, here.

Al-Shabaab looking for new foreign recruits

The Daily Nation, a news outlet based in Nairobi, Kenya is reporting that the Jihadist group affiliated with Al-Qaeda is eager to welcome to the cause more Somali ‘youths’ (former refugees*) from the far-flung Diaspora.  As far as we know, Al-Shabaab has gone through five American recruits so far of the 20 or so thought to have gone to Africa for Allah.

The extremist group whose leader was killed by American Special Forces is now defiantly asking more foreign fighters to join it.

The killing of Saleh Nabhan and the subsequent appeal by Al Shabaab for more foreign fighters comes amidst reports that the group is increasing its population of foreigners.

From neighbouring Kenya to distant Australia, Somalis in Diaspora are implicated in the running conflict in Mogadishu.

Mohamud Hassan, 23, a Somali from the State of Minnesota in the United States, died on Thursday, September 3, in Mogadishu. [Hassan is death number five, here]

He had been fighting alongside fellow jihadists (holy warriors) in the war against the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and the presence of peace-keepers sent by the African Union (Amisom) to help the government in Somalia.

Most of the article is just a rehash of what we already know and have reported since we began following this issue, here, last November.

* For new readers:

The US State Department has admitted over 80,000 Somali refugees to the US in the last 25 years and then last year had to suspend family reunification because widespread immigration fraud was revealed through DNA testing.

Where do I find refugee statistics?

It occurred to me just now, as I helped a reader find some numbers, that it might be a good idea to repeat where you can get statistics on what refugees came to the US and to what states they were first resettled.  We have written 2,311 posts since we began RRW in July of 2007 and have a category entitled ‘where to find information’ here.   However, it would take some research on your part to find some important data bases.

Here are the statistics on refugees arriving in the US from 1983-2005.

Here are the statistics on individual years from 2000-2008.

This site has the numbers and country of origin (but not destination) for this fiscal year to August 31st.

For those of you looking to find out what religion refugees are, this site, Worldwide Refugee Admissions Processing System (WRAPS), does keep those statistics but you can’t access the site or get the numbers unless perhaps you know some Member of Congress who will get the information for you.  They may initially tell your Congressman that they don’t keep such numbers, but they do.

Here is a report from Homeland Security about refugees and asylees admitted in 2008.

This is a post I wrote on just Somali refugee numbers.  This post is one of the most active we have with many visitors arriving daily even though it is a year old.

For information on all legal immigrants go to this post and follow the links back to the 2007 Yearbook of Immigrant Statistics (it takes a few minutes to load).

If you enjoy numbers these links should give you hours and hours of fun!

Federal grants go to religious groups to help immigrants become citizens

Your tax dollars:

What did I tell you a few hours ago, the reason religious organizations don’t listen to logical arguments from people like Roy Beck about how excessive immigration hurts Americans is because they receive enormous amounts of federal money.   And, they have a political agenda—getting more voters for the Far Left.  Here is an AP story that illustrates my point beautifully:

DALLAS — Federal immigration officials on Thursday awarded a Dallas group and 12 other organizations around the country $1.2 million in grants to help legal residents become U.S. citizens.

Citizenship and Immigration Services awarded $100,000 to Catholic Charities Immigration and Legal Services. It wasn’t immediately clear how much money was awarded to the other groups, but the agency said they could apply for up to $100,000.

If good Christian and Jewish people want to help immigrants become citizens couldn’t they do it on a voluntary basis?   Silly me! Not much chance of that once they have gotten on the taxpayer funded gravy train there is no incentive to do what once was truly an act of charity—giving one’s time for free.

The agency said the money goes to increase the number of people served by programs that help green card holders improve their English skills, learn about U.S. history and government, and prepare for the naturalization process.

The funds can only be used to provide direct services to immigrants with legal status in the country.

Other recipients include the Association House of Chicago; Central American Resource Center in Los Angeles; Federation Employment and Guidance Service Inc. in New York; International Institute of St. Louis; and the International Rescue Committee Inc. in San Diego.

Grants also went to the Jewish Family and Children’s Services in San Francisco; Jewish Vocational Service of MetroWest Inc. in New Jersey; Lutheran Family Services in the Carolinas, based in North Carolina; OneAmerica in Seattle; Progreso Latino in Rhode Island; Saint Mark Roman Catholic Parish in Massachusetts; and Young Women’s Christian Association in Oklahoma.
