New Australian policy to detain asylum seekers not deterring desperate people

They say they are fleeing the Taliban and Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan.  But, didn’t we just hear today that the Obama Administration doesn’t want to list the Taliban as a terrorist group?

Here, on the anniversary of 9/11, is today’s news about Hillary and Obama getting soft on the Taliban.

Washington, Sept. 11 (ANI): Days after the Obama administration designated the Pakistan based Haqqani network as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation, the U.S. has hinted that it is still undecided about placing the Taliban on its list of foreign terrorist groups.

“We do very intensive analysis before we designate someone as a foreign terrorist organisation, and I think I’ll let the designation speak for itself. We have reached that conclusion about the Haqqani Network and we think it’s the right decision,” The Nation quoted Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, as saying.

The U.S. is seeking to engage the Taliban in negotiations to renounce violence and accept the Afghan Constitution to better the chances of peace following the planned withdrawal of U.S. combat troops in 2014. (ANI)

Here we have the news about asylum seekers, with no confidence that the Taliban will reform, arriving in Indonesia and ready to board boats for Australia.

REFUGEES from Afghanistan and Pakistan are still arriving in Indonesia en route to Australia despite the Gillard government’s ”no advantage” policy and the introduction of processing on Nauru.

The news suggests the policy is not a deterrent to asylum seekers leaving the war-torn South Asian countries.

It also contradicts the line from Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare that the recent influx of boats from Indonesia represented a ”closing-down sale” by people smugglers.

An Afghan refugee living in the town of Cisarua, south of Jakarta, told The Age yesterday that only days ago a new group of refugees had arrived after flying in from the city of Quetta in Pakistan.

”They are coming little by little. Four days ago, 20 people came to Jakarta airport,” said refugee Alemzadeh, who is in Cisarua waiting for a boat to Christmas Island.

”They know [about the new policy], but they don’t stop. They say it’s too dangerous to stay in Pakistan.”

[….]

”Everyone knows [about the drowning], but … they say ‘When I go back to my country, I am sure that Taliban or al-Qaeda or the other agents of the Taliban will detain me, kill me’,” he said.

Hillary needs to get on the horn and tell these people to not fear the Taliban because Obama said so.

Nashville: Muslim woman arrested/charged after threatening co-worker at Dell

This story is significant on many levels.

Nashville has become the home of thousands of Muslim “refugees” including large numbers of Somalis (although the news story I’m about to report does not say the arrested woman is Somali, she appears to be).  Catholic Charities (funded by you, the US taxpayer) works with refugees to get them jobs in various companies nearby.

Nashville is also home to Dell which was the focus of an aggressive campaign by CAIR (Council on American Islamic Relations) when it pushed workplace demands for religious accommodation on the company a number of years ago.

And, finally, take note of one phrase in the woman’s tirade:   “…this whole country will be Muslim soon.”   I have heard that phrase many times from Somali refugees in stories I’ve reported on, or from commenters to RRW.

From The Tennessean (Hat tip: The Religion of Peace, a website you should all visit daily).

A Nashville woman was charged with attempted terrorism Friday after investigators said she threatened to hurt co-workers at the South Nashville Dell facility last weekend.

The trouble began when a CEVA Logistics employee said his co-worker Amal Ahmed Abdullahi, 29, of Zermatt Avenue, approached him during his shift last Saturday.

According to a release from Metro police, Abdullahi told the employee that “her people were dying for Allah every day; that she was ready to die for Allah; that this whole country will be Muslim soon; that this country is full of non-believers and that this place (her work place) is full of non-believers; that all unbelievers should die; that her life starts after death; that her life is not here, nobody pays attention to her and she should pick up a gun and shoot all these people.”

CEVA Logistics signed the arrest warrant as the prosecutor against Abdullahi, accusing her of intimidating/coercing a civilian population.

Metro police spokesman Don Aaron said Friday that he was not immediately aware of anyone previously being charged with attempted terrorism in Nashville.

Local Muslim mouthpiece:  Islam is a religion of peace

Still, news of the arrest was enough to send shock waves through Nashville’s Muslim community.

“We are very saddened to hear this, that one of our people acted this way,” said Amir Arain, spokesman for the Islamic Center of Nashville. “Islam condemns violence of all forms and condones peaceful coexistence and love for our neighbors..”

So, what happened at Dell several years ago?

Here is one of several accounts reported in 2005.  This is from Militant Islam Monitor:

Psychological Jihad was being waged last week at the offices of Dell computers after Somali Muslim temporary workers walked off their jobs and claimed they were not being given prayer time. The situation was exploited by Islamist organisations such as the Council of American Islamic Relations, and the Human Rights Commission, who intimidated Dell into giving into the workers demands which included monetary benefits such as back salaries for time off additional undisclosed payments. It is highly symbolic that this ‘Jihad byDa’wa ‘ is taking place at Dell, one of the world’s leading computer firms ,owned by Michael Dell, one of the richest men in the country, who ‘happens’ to be Jewish. The fact that Dell dominates the computer market in Israel could be another reason why CAIR wants to portray them as ‘anti Muslim’ and threaten a boycott of their products.

The audacity of temporary workers demanding that their religous ‘needs’ be accomodated has nothing to do with freedom of religion or civil rights. It is an attempt to bring Islam into the American workplace under the guise of ‘tolerance and diversity’. Even more alarming is that Dell has agreed to give employees training in the ‘requirements’ of Muslims…

New readers:  Because Nashville, and Tennessee generally, has become an important focal point for Muslim political agitation and the resultant push-back from anti-jihadists we have a whole category on Nashville, here.

Minneapolis Somalis not as mentally troubled as those in London

You (in Minneapolis) can breath a sigh of relief knowing the results of this study. Conversely, if you are one of our 600 plus readers from the UK during the last month, this is very bad news indeed.   Since Somali unemployment in Minneapolis is only 26% (compared to London’s 90%), the Somali population here doesn’t have as much mental illness.

From the Minneapolis Star Tribune:

Somali immigrants to the U.K. and U.S. appear to integrate better and have fewer mental health problems if they are allowed to work and they receive practical support during the first few years of their time in the new country, according to a study led by researchers at Queen Mary, University of London and published in BioMed Central Public Health.

The study investigated the experiences of Somalis living in London and Minneapolis. After adjusting for various factors such as age, sex and marital status, the researchers found that Somalis in London were six times more likely to suffer from major depression and four times more likely to have a psychological disorder than those who lived in Minneapolis.

Most of the 189 survey respondents and 47 focus group participants had a shared history of displacement and similar immigration experiences. Like the Olympic Gold medal athlete, Mo Farah, they came to the U.K. or U.S. fleeing violence and human rights abuses in Somalia. However, 90 percent were unemployed in London, compared to 26 per cent in Minneapolis; 98 per cent had obtained refugee status or citizenship in Minneapolis compared to 83 per cent in London.

Update:  Here is more on the same story I just found after posting.

Family from Gambia loses second son in Chicago murder spree

So, they are thinking about going home to Africa.

From the Chicago Sun Times:

They came to the U.S. from Gambia — in search of a better life.

But two tough decades later, some of Kenwood Academy High School student Muhammed Kebbeh’s family say they are considering going back to Africa after he became the city’s 370th murder victim this year and second of his six siblings to be gunned down on the South Side in the last six months.

“I want to pack everything up and go back,” his oldest brother, Momadu Kebbeh, 36, said Wednesday, as his devoutly Muslim family mourned and prayed at their Washington Park home. “What’s the point of staying here?”

Muhammed, 19, was sitting with his girlfriend when he was shot dead by masked gunmen in a drive-by shooting in the 8100 block of South Ingleside shortly after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. Relatives say they had been especially worried about him ever since his 23-year-old brother Omar Kebbeh became Chicago’s 68th murder victim of 2012 back in February.

Muhammed—a practicing Muslim, born in the US, and a gangbanger!

Police sources say Muhammed was a member of the Gangster Disciples street gang and his brother said that was “probably” true.

[…..]

Despite his problems, he sometimes still attended mosque with his mom, Mariana…. (where was Dad?–ed)

Just seeking a better life indeed.

60,000th Bhutanese refugee arrives in the US

Under a resettlement plan initiated by then Bush Asst. Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration, Ellen Sauerbrey, the US agreed to take 60,000 so-called Bhutanese that the government of Bhutan claimed were really Nepalese who had settled in Bhutan illegally.  Nepal refused to take its ethnic people back and so they had lived for years in camps run by the UN.  In 2007, the UN persuaded third countries to take them, and the US agreed to 60,000 over 5 years.

The 60,000th Bhutanese refugee arrived in the US a few days ago, but it looks like we aren’t going to stop there.

From South Asia Revealed:

As many as 60,000 Bhutanese refugees have been resettled in the US from Nepal where they had taken refuge in the 1990s after being forced out of their country.

On September 4, the 60,000th Bhutanese refugee, departed from Nepal to USA. The 28-year-old woman will start a new life in Columbus, Ohia, with her husband and young daughter, said a statement from the US Embassy here.

The US, in close coordination with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), began resettling Bhutanese refugees residing in eastern Nepal in 2007.

Besides the US, which has accepted 60,000 refugees, some 11,000 have already settled in Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, New Zealand, and the UK, as part of the third country resettlement programme initiated in 2007 in association with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Our doors are open for more people in need of jobs and social services:

“The US is committed to considering for resettlement as many Bhutanese refugees as express interest,” said the US Embassy.

Initially, the US government had expressed interest to accept a maximum of 60,000 Bhutanese refugees.

I wrote a lot about the Bhutanese in the early years, most “refugees” did not want to come to the US.  They wanted help from us and others in persuading Bhutan to let them go back there.  I’ve always wondered why such a powerful country as ours couldn’t have made it attractive (lucrative!) for Bhutan and Nepal to welcome back their own ethnic people.  Some of the displaced felt after several generations in Bhutan that they were more Bhutanese than Nepalese.  Frankly, it would have been more culturally sensitive and cheaper for us to send some gifts to the two countries and for them to find room for the displaced people.

Type ‘Bhutanese’ into our search function and note that while some have made it in America, others are having a very hard time especially as victims of crimes in rotten neighborhoods where the volags (federal ‘church’ contractors) have placed them.
