Dutch arrest 12 Somalis in alleged Christmas terror plot

Update December 27th: Five of the 12 are released, here.

Update: This Somali publication claims the Dutch authorities caught a big fish, here.

Several readers sent me this story yesterday. When these events occur, I wonder whether the citizens of Holland say to themselves, maybe Geert Wilders (stop Muslim immigration to the Netherlands) has a point.

From AP:

AMSTERDAM (AP) — Dutch police have arrested 12 Somali men in the key port city of Rotterdam on suspicion of preparing a terrorist attack, the public prosecutor said Saturday.

The men, aged 19 to 48, were detained Friday on a tip from the intelligence services that they were planning an attack shortly in the Netherlands. There was no immediate information on the alleged target, but Rotterdam is Europe’s biggest port and a hub of maritime commerce, with huge oil and gas storage facilities and dozens of massive docks.

European officials stepped up security around the holidays this year after a Nigerian man in 2009 left Amsterdam airport on Christmas Day and allegedly tried to blow up a plane over Detroit with explosives taped to his underwear.

There also have been growing holiday security concerns in Europe following a suicide bombing in Sweden and attacks on two embassies this week in Rome.

Hey, look we get a mention of our Rochester, Minnesota Somali former refugee who was arrested in Holland last year (see this update from May) as the alleged recruiter of the Somali missing youths who thumbed their noses at the good life in American and returned to Africa for terror training:

Dutch intelligence services reportedly have been closely watching the growing Somali community in the Netherlands. One U.S. citizen of Somali extraction is under arrest and is fighting extradition to the U.S., suspected of supplying money to the al-Shabab insurgent group for weapons and to finance trips for potential recruits. The U.S. State Department considers al-Shabab a terror group with links to al-Qaida.

For new readers: We have admitted well over 100,000 Somali refugees to the US.   To check out the numbers visit this post, one of our most widely read posts over the last few years.   In FY2010 which ended September 30th the US State Department resettled 4,884 Somalis (here) to towns near you.

Also, after being closed for nearly two years, the US State Department is on the verge of resuming the fraud-ridden family reunification program that admitted as many as 36,000 Somalis fraudulently to the US between 2003 and 2008.  See the latest on new regulations, here.  The State Department is on the verge of re-opening the program (maybe it’s open already!).

Human Rights Watch blasts Saudi Arabia over Somali deportations

We’ve been reporting (most recently here) about the so-called Muslim charity as demonstrated by wealthy Saudi Arabia as it thumbs its nose at the UN and deports fellow Muslim Somalis to Mogadishu.  At least Human Rights Watch has the guts to stand up to Saudi Arabia, something most world leaders are scared to do.

From AFP:

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia has deported thousands of Somali illegal immigrants including children directly into the war zone of Mogadishu, Human Rights Watch said on Wednesday, branding the policy “inhumane.”

HRW said about 2,000 Somalis were believed to have been sent back to Mogadishu in June and July, and it cited press reports as saying another 150 were sent to the war-torn east African coastal city on December 17.

“Deporting anyone to a war zone like Mogadishu is inhumane, but returning children is beyond comprehension,” HRW’s Africa director Rona Peligal said in a statement.

“The Saudi authorities should immediately stop these deportations and ensure that Somalis in Saudi Arabia are not returned to their country.”

Maine: Somali man and woman sentenced in health care fraud case

This is an update of the case we reported back in June.

From the Lewiston Sun Journal:

PORTLAND — A Lewiston man was sentenced to prison Friday for defrauding the government out of health care and other benefits.
His adopted sister was sentenced to home confinement.

At a court hearing Friday, Ahmed Yusuf Guled, 75, was ordered to serve four months in prison and to pay restitution of $119,440 and forfeit property totaling $109,733.

His sister, Dahabo Abdulle Osman, 59, of Portland was sentenced to six months of home confinement and five years of probation for the same offenses.

Senior U.S. District Judge D. Brock Hornby also ordered Osman to pay restitution totaling $102,509 and forfeit property totaling $88,642.02.

Guled and Osman were convicted in U.S. District Court on June 24, 2010, of conspiring to defraud the United States and commit health care fraud offenses, and separate charges of health care fraud.

The jury found that they fraudulently obtained Medicaid funds through MaineCare’s Home and Community Based Care Program, also known as the Waiver Program.

They didn’t just limit their fraud to Medicaid benefits, all sorts of welfare programs were ripped-off.

Guled and Osman were also convicted separately of making false statements to the Social Security Administration in connection with the receipt of Supplemental Security Income benefits, making false statements to housing officials with respect to public housing benefits and to the Maine Department of Health and Human Services in connection with the receipt of MaineCare, food stamps or TANF benefits.

As I said the other day, I am glad the Obama Administration is hot on the trail of welfare fraud cases.

Saudi Arabia deports another 150 Somalis to Mogadishu

…..and not a word out of Amnesty International!

Earlier today I told you that the Canadian government deported a Somali former refugee with a long crime rap sheet back to Somalia and Amnesty International was highly critical.  Now, again,* we see that Muslim Saudi Arabia deported 150 fellow Muslims to Mogadishu and not a peep out of Amnesty International that I’ve seen.

From Press TV:

Over 150 Somali migrants deported from Saudi Arabia have landed at Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu.

Most of the expelled people, who arrived in the Somali capital on Friday, were Somali teenagers who tried to escape the war-torn country, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Abdullahi Aden, one of the deportees, told Press TV that Saudi authorities had forcibly sent them back to Somalia.

“We had fled a desperate situation of civil war, political instability, poverty, and famine in Somalia and the Horn of Africa, but unfortunately, we were captured by the Saudi police force in operations they conducted in Jeddah,” Aden said.

He expressed concern over the long, unsafe journey Somalis take to reach Yemen before heading toward Saudi Arabia.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Yemen receives 14,000 refugees annually.

FrontPage summarizes Somali terrorism connection to U.S.

It’s good that attention is now being paid to the problem of Somali terrorists from the U.S., as in this article on FrontPage Magazine today. It begins:

For several years the Somalia-based Islamic terrorist group Al-Shabab has been diligently recruiting new members in the United States, efforts that have produced both a disturbing and growing increase in the radicalization of young Somali-Americans.

When 19 year-old Somali-born Mohamed Osman Mohamud was arrested on November 27 for his failed attempt to blow up a van full of dummy explosives at a tree-lighting ceremony in Portland, Oregon, some saw the influence of Al-Shabab.

However, law enforcement officials were quick to insist Mohamud had not been directed by any foreign terrorist organization, pointing out he had been the one to initiate contact with Al Qaeda recruiters in Pakistan in an effort to join its jihadist movement.

While no connection to Al-Shabab apparently exists, it certainly wasn’t an implausible conclusion to draw, given the series of arrests this year alone of Somali-Americans from all parts of the United States.

The author, Frank Crimi, gives good information about what has gone on on in Somalia that has brought us the terrorism connection here. And he covers the refugee aspect thusly:

These Somali communities, which cover all corners of the United States, are composed primarily of refugees who have been escaping the ongoing civil wars that began in Somalia since 1991 with the ouster of then President Mohamed Siad Barre, conflicts which have gone on unabated ever since.

While most Somalis have earned a reputation as law-abiding and patriotic members of the American community, in a population that has swelled from 35,000 in 2000 to upwards of 150,000 today, there are still a number who feel culturally disconnected, making them ever susceptible to the lure of outside jihadist forces.

As Thomas Mockaitis explains, “Many of these people are in fact the children of refugees. They were probably born in Somalia or born soon after they [i.e., their mothers] came to the United States. And they are not particularly in touch with their parents. And yet, neither are they particularly attracted to or accepted by mainstream American culture. So there is this kind of double alienation that makes them particularly prone to recruitment.”

It would be helpful if he and others who write about Somalis in the U.S. were more aware of the problems in the refugee program, the longstanding problems in Somali communities here, and the fact that the terrorist connection has not reduced the numbers coming in. Ann has written volumes about the refugee program and Somalis. Here, for instance, is confirmation that the Christmas tree bomber in Oregon is a refugee. And here is the story of how we got so many Somali refugees (about 84,000 so far), and continue to bring them in as refugees despite  enormous fraud in claiming family relationships.

And here is the list of all the articles on Somalis at RRW.
