A distressingly large number of sexual assault cases have been coming up in my internet news searches. The perpetrators are mostly Muslim Middle Eastern men. Some are refugees or asylum seekers. Some are well educated. However, all appear incapable of adapting to our Western society and mores. These men, in committing their crimes, may be acting on impulses rooted within their own religion and culture and upbringing – and doing irreparable harm to our citizens. Here is one such case.
In the Islamic Republic of Iran women must be covered by law. Even in the middle of summer, women wear the jet black veil called the chador in order to “protect” themselves from attack by lustful males. Uncovered Western women are portrayed as whores.Such was the society where Amir Mohebbifar, age 27, was raised. His name in Persian has a nice and pleasant meaning: “Prince of the Lover’s Light”. However, his behavior once he reached Sydney, Australia, was horrid and despicable.
Mohebbifar left Iran purportedly out of concern for himself and his girlfriend. Although he was university educated and came from a middle class family, the girl’s parents did not approve of their relationship, and he was afraid they would harm her or him. He left the girlfriend behind and joined the flood of other migrants who were traveling to Australia on smuggling boats. He arrived to Australia’s Christmas Island in March of 2013 and received a bridging visa. [At that time – not having had enough experience with Middle Eastern asylum seekers – Australia was still handing out “bridging visas”, or temporary permission to stay in the country, to migrants who arrived by boat. The practice has since been stopped.]
In Australia, Mohebbifar was increasingly out of his element. Frustrated and bored, he felt excluded, depressed and socially isolated since he did not know, and could not know, how to make friends in Australian society. He also had issues with the way Australian women dressed.
Last January (it was summer in Australia), Mohebbifar, having finished most of a bottle of whiskey, saw a 19-year-old woman headed home late at night on a pathway leading to Sydney’s Anzac Bridge. He approached her in his drunken state and asked, “Hi, are you walking home?” The young woman refused to make eye contact and walked fast to try and remove herself from the situation. She thought she had lost him, when she heard footsteps as he ran up to her and grabbed her. He then attacked her and dragged her off the path and into the bushes, where he sexually assaulted her while she was kicking and screaming and fighting and biting him. His attack lasted some 20 minutes when he suddenly stopped and started walking away. The girl called triple-zero (the equivalent to our 911) and he ran. Police arrived and, using CCTV footage, located Mohebbifar hiding under a car and sweating profusely.
Last July, Mohebbifar pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated sexual assault. The charges of sexual intercourse without consent and indecent assault were withdrawn. Sentencing was last week.
Mohebbifar told the court he had found it difficult to “adjust” to Australian women’s “revealing garments” but had been taught to “respect people”. In sentencing him, Judge Donna Woodburne said Mohebbifar had preyed on a vulnerable young woman who was simply trying to get home. “To be accosted, seized and dragged off the street by a complete stranger must have been terrifying.” She added, “She was doing nothing more than peacefully going about her business walking along public streets to go home.” “There’s a gap between the concern he felt for his Iranian girlfriend and the utter lack of concern he felt for the welfare, safety and security of his 19-year-old victim,” the judge said.
Mohebbifar trembled and cried throughout the sentencing. He was sentenced to a maximum term of eight years, and will be eligible for parole in January 2020.
He should never have left Iran!

Ho hum!!! Here we go again, we hadn’t seen one of these Somali shootings in Western Canada for awhile (and then we weren’t looking) since back in around 2012 (here is one post) when we reported on several gang-related violent deaths of Somali young men.

No one is cooperating with police, so what else is new!
A Toronto mother has travelled to Calgary where her son Abdullahi Ahmed, 26, was slain in an early-morning New Year’s shooting that sent six other people to hospital.
Ahmed died after he was shot Thursday morning at a New Year’s Eve party that went well into the morning at a residence in the city’s southwest.
Ahmed left Toronto for Calgary six years ago.
News of his death spread quickly through Toronto’s Somali community.
“My reaction is one of sadness,” said Ahmed Hussein, national president of the Canadian Somali Congress.
He said Toronto’s Somali community is worried about the shooting given the history of young men from his community who get hurt or are killed in Alberta gang violence.
“In the past there were the deaths of over three dozen Canadian-Somali males in Alberta,” Hussein told CBC News. “This had continued from 2008 to 2011.”
It’s not yet clear if the New Year’s Day shooting in Calgary was gang-related.

Police don’t know if the shooting was targeted or random. At least 50 people were at the party when the shooting started.
Calgary police questioned at least 15 people and report that many are not cooperating with their investigation.
Isn’t it wonderful how diversity brings beauty and strength to otherwise boring communities.
But, the government got him on only ripping-off the taxpayer for his disability payments! He could get ten years in the slammer (on our dime), but no mention of deportation!

SAN ANTONIO — An Iraqi man who was resettled in San Antonio to escape purported persecution pleaded guilty Monday to lying to get refugee status and stealing from the U.S. government.
Ahmed Khudhur Tayyeh, 39, was arrested last year after counterterrorism agents investigated him on suspicion that he had ties to al-Qaida.
He was set to go to trial Monday on charges of withholding information from the Social Security Administration and withholding information on his refugee application. He abruptly accepted a plea offer instead, pleading guilty to one count of theft from the government and one charge of making a false statement. A charge of Social Security fraud was dismissed.
As one of nearly 200,000 Iraqi refugees approved by the U.S. government for resettlement in America since 2007, Tayyeh was given a green card despite his giving conflicting stories about how he injured his leg.
In one story, he allegedly said he took a hit from an improvised bomb; in another, he said he was kidnapped by Iraqi police and shot in the leg.

In court Monday, Tayyeh admitted that on his refugee application he failed to list two brothers and claimed his father had been killed. His brothers are believed to have al-Qaida links, and his father is still alive.
Off the top of my head here are a few other Iraqis now spending time in US prisons on our dime. By the way, I’ve advocated that the US State Department pick up some of the prison tabs for those they have resettled (not just Iraqis) now living in prison on us!

Update: A reader reports that according to court documents, Vargas-Salguero has a criminal record and is identified as: WHITE, CAUCASIAN, ASIATIC INDIAN, ARAB (whatever that is!). No mention of immigration status.
The Washington Postreports that a Guatemalan regular at CASA de Maryland (the very rich and powerful government-funded advocacy and support group for illegal aliens in Maryland) was murdered on the steps of CASA’s luxurious mansion by another man who also appears to be of Hispanic (illegal?) origin. (There is no mention of the arrested man’s nationality or legal status.) See update above.

Miguel Angel Barillas worked as a landscaper for two years after coming to the United States from Guatemala to make a better life for his family back home, including a wife, two children and a mother with cancer.
Despite the tiring labor, he regularly ended his days at the headquarters of Casa de Maryland, where the free WiFi allowed him to sit on the steps and use his cellphone to Skype with his family.
Prince George’s County Police said they found Barillas’s unconscious body early Wednesday on the steps of Casa de Maryland in Langley Park. The 32-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The motive: cellphone theft.
Police said Saturday that they have arrested Mynor Vargas-Salguero, 25, of the 7900 block of Riggs Road in Langley Park and charged him with first-degree murder and armed robbery. They said that Vargas-Salguero allegedly stabbed Barillas and then took his cellphone.
Vargas-Salguero is in custody.

A spokesman for Casa de Maryland, the state’s largest community organization serving Latino families, said the incident has rocked the staff and families who rely on the organization for help. The group held a candlelight vigil Wednesday to remember Barillas and call for an end to violence.
“I would see him every day,” said Robert Asprilla, a lead organizer for Casa de Maryland who spent a lot of time with Barillas. “He worked until 6 p.m., and then he would get off, eat his meal and then come to Casa headquarters, where he sat outside to call his family. . . . He was killed right where he was every day.”
CASA calls for an end to violence and more community (taxpayer-funded?) cameras and policing:
Barillas lived in a large apartment complex near the Casa de Maryland headquarters. Although there are cameras on the building, security is inadequate, Asprilla said. “The community is asking for more cameras on every building. We have cameras at Casa, but we need more. We also need more community policing.”
By the way, CASA de Maryland was born out of the ‘sanctuary movement‘ that saw churches illegally moving Central Americans into America in the early 1980’s.
