Could non-citizen voters (Somalis?) swing close races? Yes, says WaPo

Non-citizen Somali voters may have made the difference for funny-man Al Franken in 2008.

On Thursday we reported that some of Obama’s illegal alien “Dreamers” are voting.

And, I should mention that I’ve been asked several time recently if I thought illegal aliens or more importantly legal immigrants, like refugees, are voting before they have even gained citizenship and I’ve said:  Of course they are!  They simply check ‘yes’ to the citizenship question when they get a drivers license and they are good to go because no one ever cross-checks.

This Washington Post story (can we believe our eyes that this is in the WaPo?) confirms what we have only surmised (hat tip: Paul).  You can read the whole thing yourself but the section that interested me most was the one on the Minnesota Al Franken victory which we reported on extensively in 2008 (here is one of several posts we wrote at the time) may well have been decided with the help of Somali illegal voters.

From the Washington Post (although they don’t use the ‘S’ word!):

Because non-citizens tended to favor Democrats (Obama won more than 80 percent of the votes of non-citizens in the 2008 CCES sample), we find that this participation was large enough to plausibly account for Democratic victories in a few close elections. Non-citizen votes could have given Senate Democrats the pivotal 60th vote needed to overcome filibusters in order to pass health-care reform and other Obama administration priorities in the 111th Congress. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) won election in 2008 with a victory margin of 312 votes. Votes cast by just 0.65 percent of Minnesota non-citizens could account for this margin.

Yup!

Are ISIS fighters sending their families to refugee camps?

That is what a representative of the Kurdistan Regional Government told a gathering of the Human Rights Commission in Spain yesterday.

From Rudaw:

BARCELONA, Spain – Refugees from the war in Syria and Iraq include family members of Islamic State (ISIS) fighters, leading to security concerns among authorities, the Kurdistan Region’s representative in Spain said.

“Some of the refugees are families of members of the Islamic State,” said Daban Shadala, the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) representative.

“They are sending their families (to the refugee camps) while they continue to fight us,” he said this week in a briefing to the Human Rights Commission of the Basque parliament in the city of Vitoria.

Shadala, whose comments in English were translated through an interpreter, was quoted as saying that weapons had been found in some of the houses where refugees were placed. He did not elaborate.

He said that, according to the last count, there were some 1.8 million refugees from Iraq and Syria in the Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq, and warned that another 500,000 refugees were still expected.

Shadala made an appeal for more humanitarian help, saying UN and international aid had not been enough to cope with the huge numbers of refugees.

“We have 26 refugee camps in the Kurdistan Region. It is very difficult to manage them… We are in a deep crisis but we want to continue being tolerant,” he told the MPs.

According to Sibel Kulaksiz, a senior economist at the World Bank who recently led a mission to the region, the influx of refugees and internally displaced people has seen Kurdistan’s population jump by around 17 per cent, putting severe strain on the local economy and public services.

Remember that the UN is picking our refugees  and that most Syrian refugees who will be admitted to the US by the thousands beginning this fiscal year will be from UN refugee camps.

In Berlin, “Ich heisse Mohammed”

Invasion of Europe continues…..

Yesterday we told you about Munich (Bavaria) in the south of Germany and today there is news about ‘refugee’-swamped Berlin.

This news from The News gives a good description of how a Syrian family paid a human trafficker to get them across the Mediterranean to Sicily and from there made their way northward to Germany.

Remember the EU has a law that says asylum seekers must apply in the first country they get to in Europe, but obviously flaunting any EU laws, many sneak out of Italy or Malta or Greece and move on to the more “welcoming” countries of Germany or Sweden.

BERLIN: Syrian refugees are bedding down in the converted classrooms of a former Berlin high school as Germany grapples with being Europe’s number-one destination for asylum seekers.

Among the newcomers is Mohammed Nabil, 28, who after a perilous land and sea journey now shares a small and immaculate if improvised bedroom with his mother, brother and sister in a working class district of the German capital.

Germany this year expects some 200,000 asylum seekers to cross its borders — or nearly 60 percent more than in 2013 when numbers had already soared by almost two-thirds.  [When Mark Steyn wrote America Alone (2006) before the Syrian conflict, I suspect even he didn’t see how fast his prediction would come true.  You can be sure that the Syrians will never be asked to leave Germany—ed]

The leading country of origin is Syria, where over three years of bloody fighting have driven more than two million people to flee, mostly to Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq.

[….]

Germany, Europe’s most populous country, received more than 20,000 applications for political asylum from Syrians between January and August, a 186-percent leap from a year earlier.

Once in Sicily, the family decided to press on for Germany, where they arrived just over two months ago. They spent their first night in Berlin in a park, then went to a police station to ask for help.

Nabil now spends his time working on his German language skills, writing out in a large exercise book phrases such as “Wie heisst Du?” (What’s your name?) and “Ich heisse Mohammed” (My name is Mohammed).
