Federal refugee contractor gives “Freedom Award” to George Soros

On Wednesday evening the International Rescue Committee (one of nine federal government contractors) which each year receives millions of tax dollars ($251 million from you in 2012), gave its annual Freedom Award at a glitzy gala at New York City’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel to George Soros with UN Ambassador Samantha Power and Former President Bill Clinton among the star-studded cast of elitists.

Here is how the IRC press release begins (update: press release has been removed from site, so it is a good thing I got it!)

On November 6 the International Rescue Committee honored businessman and philanthropist George Soros with its Freedom Award, thereby recognizing what IRC president David Miliband has called his “tremendous commitment to the advancement of human rights, social justice and democracy around the world.”

The contributions that George Soros has made to the cause of freedom worldwide have been far reaching, creative and effective. Perhaps most significant, he is the founder and chairman of Open Society—a network of foundations, partners, and projects in more than 100 countries. His commitment to the idea of open society—where rights are respected, government is accountable and no one has the monopoly on the truth—makes the Open Society Foundations unlike any other private philanthropic effort in history. Open Society Institute grants to the IRC over the years have provided more than $3 million in support of lifesaving programs worldwide.

How about if the IRC just finds more millionaires and billionaires to fund their ‘good’ works and leaves the US taxpayers alone.

Then get this, Soros promised another cool million for the poor suffering Syrians, BUT…. Ha! Ha! Ha! the money is for influence peddling, not for “humanitarian aid” to feed and clothe the destitute. From the Huffington Post which also reported the presence of one of Soros star pupils—-Samantha Power!

Soros said the money was intended to influence public opinion and encourage a meaningful, global response to the crisis in Syria. The billionaire was critical of the world’s response to the crisis up until now, saying his donations were a testament to the “glaring failure of international governance.”

New IRC CEO Miliband makes the news defending Marxist Dad

David Miliband: Maudlin response to criticism of Marxist Dad!

Former British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, who only last month took the reins of one of the largest US refugee resettlement contractors in the US, the International Rescue Committee, took to the media on Friday to defend his Marxist father (“best academic Marxist of his generation!”).

I wonder if this is the sort of publicity they expected out of their new highly-paid (over $400,000 in salary and benefits mostly from the US taxpayer!) front man. See a couple of previous posts on Miliband here and here.

David Miliband has expressed hurt over the Daily Mail article which claimed his father “hated Britain”.

Speaking as the row over the article started to die down, the International Rescue Committee president said his Marxist academic father was a loving presence in his childhood.

“It’s hateful when you have your father targeted in that way, traduced in that way,” he said.

“The important thing for me is that he was an ¬incredibly loving dad who meant a huge amount to me and obviously to Ed and to my mum as well. I hope that the right lessons are learned.”

I didn’t care enough to read the original offending article, but surely it didn’t call into question whether the Marxist Dad was loving or not toward his children? And, I’m wondering, if the Dad were alive, would he be appalled by the fat pay check his son now receives from the masses. Oh yeh, the World Socialist website has already weighed in on that, here.

New IRC boss, David Miliband, says we must embrace “political Islamism”

The Financial Times had the story on Sunday, but since you need to subscribe just visit Pamela Geller at Atlas Shrugs for a more colorful telling.

Miliband to head up large US taxpayer-funded refugee resettlement contractor beginning in September.

Financial Times opening paragraph:

David Miliband, the former foreign secretary, has broken ranks with world leaders by describing the military intervention in Egypt as a “coup” and urging all sides to embrace “political Islamism” for the sake of democracy.

Geller on Miliband:

This is horrifying but revealing. So now we know what the left’s true agenda really is.

“Embracing political Islamism” is a fancy way of saying everyone must convert to Islam or accept the status of the dhimma under Islamic law.

David Milibrand urging all sides to embrace “political Islamism” for the sake of democracy is like urging all women to embrace prostitution for the sake of chastitiy. There is nothing democratic about political Islam. It is, far and away, the most brutal and extreme system of governance on the face of the earth.

The urbane savage Miliband explains that bringing “political Islam’ – into the democratic process is a good thing not a bad thing.” Tell that to the Christians and other religious minorities persecuted, subjugated and slaughtered under poltiical islam. Tell that to the women forced into marriage, honor killed, burka-clad. This submission to Islamic supremacism from a former foreign secretary is monstrous. And yet the enemedia reports it like it is a reasonable position. It’s akin to supporting Nazism under Hitler.

Miliband to the International Rescue Committee:

Miliband will soon be taking the reins of the second largest of the US State Department’s Refugee Resettlement contractors (the US Bishops are numero uno)—-the International Rescue Committee. Statements like this blather on political Islam would indicate he has no interest in quietly shepherding the downtrodden, but will use the IRC as a bully pulpit. It is a large organization scattered around the world as we have told readers here on many occasions.

The International Rescue Committee is a $431 million a year operation with more than half of its funding comes from the US taxpayer. (Miliband will receive a salary of around $450,000 a year, doing well by doing good?).

Many have questioned exactly what the IRC is doing mucking around in other country’s affairs. Here , we reported on leadership awards given by the IRC in the past to John McCain, George Soros and Hamid Karzai, which tells us a lot about their mission.

Oh, and lest I forget, they are lobbying in support of the Gang of Eight amnesty bill too, here.

IRC: We love Hamid Karzai!

Karzai receives his award from now outgoing CEO George Rupp whose taxpayer-funded salary and benefits exceeded $450,000 a year!

Yesterday I told you about how the World Socialist Web Site feels about the second largest of our US Refugee Resettlement contractors (the US Conference of Catholic Bishops is the largest)—the International Rescue Committee that brings on average 10,000 or more refugees a year to your towns and cities.

But, not only that, they muck around in the business of countries all over the world while you pay their salaries and fund their New York galas.

Below (posted yesterday) is what the World Socialists dug out on their finances in an article critical of the organizations choice of David Miliband to head up the multi-million dollar do-gooder operation. I think it’s called doing well by doing good!*

According to a report on the IRC from Root Cause, a non-profit research and consulting firm, published in the Independent, only 14 percent of its funding came from private sources. Government grants and contracts, in contrast, accounted for 44 percent, foreign government grants and contracts 27 percent and 11 percent from UN agency grants and contracts. As its president, Miliband will receive £263,000 a year (US$400,000) plus £30,000 (US$52,000) from related groups—five times the salary he received as an MP. [And, about equal to Rupp’s!—ed]

Today a reader sent me this list of the recipients of the IRC’s prestigious “freedom” award given each year, we are told, at a swanky black-tie event in NYC. Look who they honored in 2002—none other than Afghanistan’s creepy and corrupt President Hamid Karzai! Earlier awards went to George Soros and John McCain which tells us a lot!

But, what makes that old news so interesting is that our reader directs us to this Reuters story today:

CIA Bribes Karzai: Millions In ‘Ghost Money’ Paid To Afghanistan President’s Office, New York Times Reports

April 29 (Reuters) – Tens of millions of U.S. dollars in cash were delivered by the CIA in suitcases, backpacks and plastic shopping bags to the office of Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai for more than a decade, the New York Times says, citing current and former advisers to the Afghan leader.

The so-called “ghost money” was meant to buy influence for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) but instead fuelled corruption and empowered warlords, undermining Washington’s exit strategy from Afghanistan, the newspaper quoted U.S. officials as saying.

“The biggest source of corruption in Afghanistan”, one American official said, “was the United States.”

The CIA declined to comment on the report and the U.S. State Department did not immediately comment. The New York Times did not publish any comment from Karzai or his office.

“We called it ‘ghost money’,” Khalil Roman, who served as Karzai’s chief of staff from 2002 until 2005, told the New York Times. “It came in secret and it left in secret.”

So, either the IRC leaders are incredibly naive suck-ups, or, could they be the bag men?

Maybe that World Socialist Web Site is on to something when they suggest that the IRC’s “humanitarian” involvement in Afghanistan and elsewhere is just a pretty good cover:

Bottom line for us? Why the hell should hardworking American taxpayers be paying for whatever they are doing—galas for the likes of Karzai, Soros and McCain, or CIA influence buying?

One more thing! I forgot to tell you! The IRC is a pusher of the Gang of Eight amnesty bill. Go here and see how they have even drafted the message they want their groupies to send to Congress! Could it be because there is more money for them and the potential for more ‘clients’ to resettle if the bill becomes law.

That would be the International Rescue Committee (one of the top nine federal contractors ) which, with much fanfare, hired the former British Foreign Secretary and pal of Tony Blair, David Miliband, to head one of the largest resettlement contractors bringing refugee “workers” to your towns and cities. We reported the news here on March 27th.

Pay attention Leftwingers! If you think the “humanitarian” refugee program is all about good works—helping the poor and the downtrodden and all that—think again!

This story is nearly a month old, but since I’m not in the habit of reading the World Socialist Web Site, it only just now arrived in my inbox thanks to reader Jim who spotted it.

Socialists say the IRC is a front for imperialists! No kidding!

David Miliband, older brother of Labour Party leader Ed Miliband and former foreign secretary, is stepping down as the MP for South Shields and taking over the job as head of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in New York.

The IRC website states, “The International Rescue Committee responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 22 US cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home.”

In his new job, Miliband will be playing a “role in the political intrigues of British and US imperialism” says WSWS.

The IRC’s charity status is used as a front behind which Washington pursues its strategic interests throughout the globe. It boasts a board of governors that includes former United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan and no fewer than three former US secretaries of state—Henry Kissinger, Madeleine Albright and Condoleezza Rice. Sponsors come from among the wealthiest and most powerful of the financial elite, including Pepsi, Intel and McKenzie. [Maybe we could find a meat packer to throw in the mix as well!—ed]

[Readers please note that Socialists/Lefties George Soros and Samantha Power have also been on the IRC board or have close ties to the organization, here. Don’t try to put this in the Left-Right framework. What might the common thread be—money, power, ruling class status? a disdain for the regular folks? All of the above!–ed]

The IRC covers many of the geographical areas Miliband became involved with while at the Foreign Office in the UK—South Sudan, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Palestinian Authority, Sierra Leone and Sri Lanka—where both the US and Britain have extensive business and geo-strategic interests.

The majority of the IRCs funding comes from government sources (that would be you!). Miliband will make a larger salary than the President of the United States.

At the Foreign Office, Miliband oversaw an organisation employing 14,000 staff across 270 diplomatic offices. The IRC may be smaller, but its international reach is greater. It operates in more than 40 countries and within the US itself, with offices in 22 American cities.

The IRC has an operating revenue of around $390 million. A look at where the majority of its funding comes from gives an indication of whose interests it serves.

By the way, the refugee resettlement industry in the US is a billion dollar a year industry—a billion that we know of!

IRC: Independent? Or, hidden political agenda?

There has been criticism over the appointment by those who believe it will risk the IRC being exposed as an instrument of Anglo-American foreign policy. The Observer reports Michiel Hofman of Médecins Sans Frontières saying it could make dealing with groups such as the Taliban more difficult. “Assertions by humanitarian organisations that they are fully independent, there are no hidden political agenda, slowly wither away,” he said.

David Miliband Limited!

When interviewed, he appears as a petulant schoolboy waiting for something bigger and better to come along. In the meantime, he has turned his hand to making considerable amounts of money. He has reportedly amassed almost £1 million through public speaking engagements such as the recent lecture he gave in Abu Dhabi, for which he received £25,000. He set up a company, The Office of David Miliband Limited, which right-wing commentator Toby Young has attacked as a tax-avoidance scheme through which his non-parliamentary earnings are channelled.

You know what scares me about the article (read it all!)—I find myself agreeing with much in this report at the World Socialist Web Site! Ahhhhhhhh!
