Malta: Tanker stalemate ends with Italy taking the illegal aliens

Liberian-flagged MT Salamis was kept from docking in Malta for nearly three days after picking up illegal aliens off the coast of Libya.

This is a story I’ve had in my queue for the last few days and didn’t get to because news is hopping all over the world on the asylum-seeker/refugee front.  So this morning I see the crisis has been averted by Italy agreeing to take its passengers—another batch of migrants.  American readers, please continue reading—this story involves you!

Malta told the tanker ‘no way’ were they entering Maltese waters with that cargo.

Here is the story from the Times of Malta:

A stand-off of almost three days ended early this morning when a tanker carrying 102 migrants lifted anchor and headed for Syracuse after having been blocked just outside Maltese waters on Sunday night.

The MT Salamis had rescued the migrants from a boat just 24 miles off Libya and had been heading for Malta when it was stopped from entering Maltese territorial waters. The government said the ship’s master had ignored orders by the Italian and Maltese rescue authorities to return the migrants to Libya.

Last night the government said Italy had accepted to take in the migrants, diffusing the situation after diplomatic contacts between Malta, Italy and Greece.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat thanked Italian Premier Entrico Letta and said his decision would continue to reinforce the good relations between the two countries.

Meanwhile, a new group of 86 migrants arrived in Malta this morning after being rescued off the coast.

Visit the Times of Malta for more on this story.

Malta is under-going a boat people crisis as thousands of North African illegal aliens attempt to reach its shores.  The situation is growing worse and there is no doubt in my mind (after nearly 6 years following the Malta mess) that the increasing numbers arriving on the island nation are partially due to the US State Department transforming hundreds of them into “refugees” bound for America in what is surely a perversion of international refugee law.   True asylum seekers are expected to ask for asylum in the first safe country in which they land—-not shop for a country as is apparently also going to be encouraged in Papua New Guinea.

Malta in US propaganda!

Just a reminder that the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIARS) has produced a piece of propaganda using Malta.

I hate to give them any space here with their “Myth Buster” campaign being used in the US at the moment to shame Congress and the public into accepting more refugees and illegal aliens as the Gang of Eight bill progresses in Congress. See my earlier post on their campaign here.

Check out LIARS (formally LIRS, but a reader recently suggested a more appropriate acronym!) hand out implying that Malta is more generous than the US because it “resettles” more refugees per 1,000 sq. km. than any other country.  THESE ARE NOT REFUGEES, THEY ARE ILLEGAL ALIENS and poor Malta is trying to figure out how to stop them from coming and to keep them from staying!

I guess at some point I should go over the whole handout above and show you how LIARS (96% funded by US taxpayers) is twisting the facts on refugees with the help of the hard Left at the Center for American Progress.

Australia: First 40 Afghan and Iranian illegal aliens sent to Papua New Guinea

Update August 5th:  Australians living in Hunter upset to hear a new detention center (for 1000) could be built in their town if the PNG strategy fails, here.

Presumably demonstrating  that they mean business, the Rudd government has sent the first batch of “asylum seekers” to PNG.  Apparently, PNG will process them and then decide whether they can stay or not.  It is not clear to me what happens to them if PNG rejects them.

We’ve been reporting on Australia’s new get-tough policy for the last couple of weeks.  Opposition leader Tony Abbott says this is just a stunt to get voters to think something is being done about the invasion of Australia by mostly Muslims from the Middle East.

Here is the latest story, from Trend:

The first asylum-seekers group which included 40 Iranian and Afghan refugees, has been sent to Papua New Guinea from Australia, according to country’s new refugee policy, IRIB News reported.

If the cases of refugees are approved by the local government, they will be allowed to stay in New Guinea.

Australian government has announced on July 19 that illegal migrants which enter Australia by boat will not be tolerated, and will be sent to Papua New Guinea or their homeland, the report said.

By the way, Iran won’t take back any that are ordered deported, surely because this is about ‘seeding’ the West with Islamists!

Lovely prospective citizens—the inmates burned down the detention facility:

According to the reports, hundreds of asylum seekers including Palestinian, Iraqi, Lebanese, Iranian and Sudanese in Nauru Island refugee camp, who protested against slow process of refugee determination and hardening of asylum laws, were attacked by police On July 20.

Some 125 asylum seekers were in police custody on Nauru after the riot ended with fire destroying most of an Australian-run detention center there.

So, do you think the average Australian citizen has had enough—Yup!

Ho Hum! Rudd’s a racist

Australia has a boat people problem.  Too many aliens are attempting to land there with hopes of getting asylum and the new government under Kevin Rudd has a plan.  We told you about it here.

See the latest on anti-Rudd protests at the Brisbane Times. (Photo is from that opinion piece)

Clearly the Marxists* don’t like the plan and so therefore all they know how to do is to call those who oppose their wide-open borders multi-culti dreamland “racists.”

Calling all Socialists and Communists—-please tell us if you have any limit to the number of people who could migrate to your country.   Do you believe that countries like Australia should just open its borders to any one who wishes to come?  How would the workers pay for all those needy people?  What happens to Marxism when the largest numbers of asylum seekers are Muslims who don’t believe in Marxism, and they ultimately become the majority?

I’m serious (I would like to ask this girl carrying the sign) would any reader who considers himself (or herself) a Socialist please tell us if there is a limit for you—a magic number that would be too many?

* Photo:  See the sign with SA at the bottom.  That must be Australia’s ‘Socialist Alternative’–a Marxist organization.

For new readers, visit our Australia category where this will be our 104th post on the problems with refugees, asylum seekers and illegal aliens downunder.  From my vantage point it seems that immigration is the major policy issue facing that country right now.

Are asylum seekers illegal immigrants? Malta publication tries to regain control of the language

LOL! I’m thinking they used the wrong photo to illustrate their point—this guy looks a little rough to be “vulnerable.” Don’t you think?

Frankly, I can’t tell if the Malta Independent has published a news article or an opinion piece with this title: Are asylum seekers illegal immigrants?

What alien entering a country such as Malta would enter with any other story than he/she was seeking asylum?  They are not stupid.  So, I say they are illegal aliens until proven otherwise.

There must be a lot of people who agree with me and thus the Open Borders word-police are trying to regain control of the language with this below.

From the Malta Independent:

Asylum seekers who arrive in Malta by boat are neither engaging in illegal activity, nor are they immigrants. [Aliens then?—ed]

The UN Refugee Convention (to which Malta is a signatory) recognises that refugees have a right to enter a country for the purposes of seeking asylum, irrespective of how they arrive or whether they hold valid travel or identity documents.

The Convention, to which Malta is legally bound, stipulates that what would usually be considered as illegal actions, such as entering a country without a visa, should not be treated as illegal if a person is seeking asylum.

This means that it is incorrect to refer to asylum seekers who arrive without authorisation as “illegal”, as they in fact have a right to enter the country to seek asylum.

In line with Malta’s obligations under the Convention, Malta permits unauthorised entry into the country for the purposes of seeking asylum. Asylum seekers do not break any Maltese laws simply by arriving on boats or without authorisation.   [Let’s see—five paragraphs say the very same thing in each one, do you dummies get the message now?—ed]

Such allowances are made because it is not always safe or practicable for asylum seekers to obtain travel documents or travel through authorised channels.

For new readers, here is our archive on Malta.  We follow the illegal alien issue there regularly because the US State Department has brought thousands of illegal alien men, like the one in the photo, to your towns and cities as “refugees” in a perversion of international refugee law.

EU Court of Human Rights says NO to “push-back” plan in Malta

Update July 16th:  Catholic Ireland takes ten Somalis from Malta, here.  It’s a good thing the EU is stepping up.  This is not America’s problem.

You knew this would happen.  The government of Malta would not be able to send a message to the thousands waiting in North Africa to board boats and make a run at Italy and Malta.  Don’t try it, you will be returned to Africa is message needed now.

This, below from Voice of America, is an update to my post yesterday.  If you are a new reader here at RRW we follow Malta’s illegal alien troubles closely (and have for over 5 years) because the US State Department has been bringing some of those African migrants to the US in a perversion of international refugee law.

Jesuit Refugee Services—a leader of the pack?

I feel for Malta and the Maltese people because they are a tiny country overloaded with not just illegal aliens, but apparently a large and noisy group of NGOs sucking off government funds (EU tax payer money too) just as the US refugee contractors do in America.  Those Europeans opposing the cultural annihilation of Europe do not have the resources to battle the human rights industrial complex in the media.

Voice of America:

LONDON — Malta has been forced to cancel the forced return of dozens of Somali migrants to Libya, after an emergency ruling by the European Court of Human Rights. The EU has criticized the attempted repatriation, but Malta has accused its European partners of a lack of solidarity. It comes after the Pope visited an Italian island earlier this week that’s received thousands of migrants.

[….]

Maltese authorities had intended to send two planes back to Libya carrying 45 Somali migrants who had arrived Tuesday.  But the European Court of Human Rights issued a ruling banning the repatriations.

The migrants must be given the chance to apply for asylum, says Katrine Camilleri, a Maltese lawyer from the Jesuit Refugee Service.*

[….]

Authorities say more than 400 migrants have arrived on the island in the past week, including babies, pregnant women and three men with gunshot wounds. Most are Eritrean or Somali.

[….]

Malta has accused the European Union of a lack of solidarity in failing to help with the refugee influx.

The United Nations says around 8,400 refugees have landed in Italy and Malta so far this year – double the number in the same period last year.

The article goes on to gush about the Pope going to Lampedusa here to put a guilt-trip on the world.  Update:  Maybe Pope should stay home and continue cleaning up child abuse in the Vatican!

Learn more here about the Jesuit Refugee Services which is getting EU funds to give “vulnerable” refugees “psychosocial” support.  How about the members of the EU taking some of the needy migrants to their countries and give them their psychosocial support there—in London, Paris and Berlin?

*How many “refugees” has Ms. Katrine Camilleri welcomed to live in her home?  Does anyone know?

Click here for an archive going back more than five years on the Maltese mess—a mess the US helped to make by offering free tickets to America for some of the African illegal migrants.

Be sure to see this story about an Italian diplomat and UN workers being arrested for trafficking Somalis between Libya and Malta—guess the business is back up and running!
