I’ve told you before that I turn on CNN every morning so I get a feel for where the Left is going every day and today I said uh-oh, here we go on the Burmese Rohingya again. CNN featured a longer piece on the “plight” of Rohingya Muslims in Burma (a Buddhist country).
I couldn’t possibly rehash the decade long controversy (the decade I chronicled in my Rohingya Reports category where 220 posts are archived), but I want you to know why this matters to you and that is that we are admitting Rohingya refugees to live in towns near you—14,882 in the last decade—including over 1,000 since Trump became President (So much for a so-called “Muslim ban!”)
Before I get to the numbers breakdown over the last ten years….
…here is a bare bones story about stepped-up UN (with the US!) efforts to smackdown the Buddhist government of Myanmar.
From Reuters:
COX’S BAZAR, Bangladesh (Reuters) – U.N. Security Council envoys began a four-day visit to Bangladesh and Myanmar on Saturday to see firsthand the aftermath of a Myanmar military crackdown that Britain, the United States and others have denounced as ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims.
They are due to meet Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Myanmar’s de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi and travel to Rakhine state, where the violence erupted eight months ago. Myanmar denies the accusations of ethnic cleansing.
The Rohingya started the latest round of fighting!
Reuters continues….
Rohingya insurgent attacks on security posts in Rakhine on Aug. 25 sparked the military operation that has sent nearly 700,000 Rohingya fleeing to camps in Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh. Council envoys will visit those camps on Sunday.
The visit puts a global spotlight back on the crisis amid warnings by the United Nations, aid groups and Myanmar’s panel of international advisers on Rohingya issues that the coming monsoon season would likely worsen the humanitarian situation.
[….]
Buddhist-majority Myanmar has for years denied Rohingya citizenship, freedom of movement and access to many basic services such as healthcare and education. They are considered illegal immigrants from mainly Muslim Bangladesh.
Fleeing refugees have reported killings, rapes and arson on a large scale. Myanmar has said its operations in Rakhine were a legitimate response to attacks on security forces by Rohingya insurgents.
The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has asked it to rule on whether it has jurisdiction over the deportations of Rohingyas to Bangladesh, a possible crime against humanity.
The U.S. government is conducting an intensive examination of alleged atrocities against Myanmar’s Rohingya that could be used to prosecute Myanmar’s military for crimes against humanity, U.S. officials told Reuters on Wednesday.
According to Wrapsnet, the US has admitted 14,482 Rohingya Muslims to the country since FY 2009 (through today).
When I first started writing about the Rohingya back in 2007 or 2008, there were articles about how some Rohingya were being trained by Islamic terrorists at Cox’s Bazar, the same refugee camp that the UN envoy is visiting as we speak. All that seems to have been forgotten and swept under the rug!
From FY09 to FY14 we admitted an average 1,000 Rohingya a year to be distributed around the country. Then in FY15 and FY16 the numbers jumped (with the Obama final push!) to 3,809 and 3,145 respectively (probably plucked from Malaysia and Indonesia where they arrived illegally).
In FY17, which was the year shared by Obama and Trump, the number was 1,361, and this fiscal year, almost 7 months in, the number has dropped to 564 which could still end up being over 1,000 by the end of the fiscal year on September 30th.
Again, for ambitious readers, see my Rohingya Reports category and see that the story the media is trying to paint of a maligned Muslim minority is much more complicated because the Rohingya are not pure-as-the-driven-snow when it comes to instigating violence! Indeed, some Rohingya, here in the US, have wasted no time before becoming political activists!
Contact the White House! You will see that I have permanently placed a link for you to contact the White House in the upper right hand corner of RRW.
Tell the President! The Rohingya are not our problem—we did nothing to cause the “pottery barn rule” to be applied!
