Philadelphia: Liberians furious about fire response; riot

Editor:  This is a guest post from ‘pungentpeppers.’   I’m traveling today and will see how much I can still get posted.  The mainstream media is doing a pretty good job of paying attention to the “refugee” issue these days—thanks to the unaccompanied alien minors surging at the border (LOL! less work for me!).

We don’t take very many Liberians through the regular resettlement program (one of the articles ‘pp’ linked says 3,300 went to Philadelphia), but large numbers who were here for other reasons, some illegally, were also granted ‘temporary protected status’ and never went home.  TPS is another LEGAL immigration program for “refugees” that needs to be scrapped.  Search RRW for ‘temporary protected status’ to read more.

Diversity is beautiful alert……see link to tax fraud by Philadelphia Liberians too (below)!

Pungenpeppers’ reporting from Philly:

Liberian protester arrested. Photo: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/07/07/philadelphia-fatal-fire-protest/12321835/

After a fire took four young lives, an angry, mostly Liberian mob stormed the streets of Southwest Philadelphia yesterday (Monday) taking over entire blocks. At times hurling water bottles at police, the outraged crowd were protesting what they perceived to be a too slow response to the fire that also destroyed a block of homes in their Liberian neighborhood.

Gathering on the heels of threats made against firefighters, the noisy protesters blocked a fire station, preventing crews from responding to emergency calls. Per NBC10’s George Spencer, at the scene, it was “one of the angriest mobs I have seen as a reporter”.

Saturday’s blaze started before 3:00 a.m., perhaps after fireworks set alight a sofa that was being used as porch furniture. The fire exploded and spread quickly to neighboring row homes. Dewen Bowah, 41, was in the home alone at the time taking care of seven children. She saved three daughters, but could not reach her 4-year-old twins, Maria and Marialla Bowah, or the children of another mother, 1-month-old Taj Jacque and 4-year-old Patrick Sanyeah who perished. Bowah, who saved her life by jumping out a second story window, was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

At the stormy protest, Patrick Sanyeah, whose son — also named Patrick — died in the fire, shouted “These people let our kids burn to ashes!” Other family members and neighbors accused police and firefighters, yelling “Murderers!” After nightfall, the crowd finally dispersed.

“Obviously the fire is the individual incident that set this off,” said Liberian community activist Christian Dunbar, “but I think this is frustration from a community that feels underrepresented.” Dahn Dennis, president of the Liberian Association of Pennsylvania, said, “The route being taken now is not the right way. This is not the representation of Liberians. We are decent people.” Many Liberians have been settled in Philadelphia by refugee resettlement contractors. Per a Philadelphia Weekly report, since the late 1990s, more refugees have arrived in Philadelphia from Liberia than from any other country—about 3,300 in total.

Fire investigators plan to return this morning to sift through the ashes. Last year, the Philadelphia Fire Department distributed free smoke detectors to the residents of the street, and it’s been reported that the detectors were installed in the home at that time.

Sorry, this is a major story, and I used many links:

Addendum:

By the way, out of Liberia yesterday, is news that Liberians in the Philadelphia area have been involved in tax refund fraud.

Philadelphia: Refugees sign up for Obamacare, but don’t know how to use it

Affordable Care Act navigators have managed to sign up large numbers of immigrants in a health care plan, but mostly because the language barrier is so great, those same counselors now need to be sure those who signed use their insurance and PAY THEIR BILL.

Burmese refugee surprise: I have to pay even if I’m not sick???

One of the counselors said you could be here for 20 years and speak perfect English and still not be able to figure it out!

From Philly.com:

When Biak Sung escaped from Myanmar in 2011, there was no health insurance for people like her.

So it’s not surprising that months after buying a plan on the Affordable Care Act marketplace, Sung, 27, a mother of two and a political refugee – whose English consists of “hello” and “thank you” – doesn’t know how to use her family’s policy.

Last week, Sung, whose husband works full time, went to the Southeast Asian Mutual Assistance Association Coalition (SEAMAAC) in South Philadelphia to learn about her new policy, an Independence Blue Cross silver-tier Keystone HMO Proactive plan.

“She doesn’t know what steps to do next and she is concerned,” said Zing Thluai, a SEAMAAC worker who speaks one of three Burmese dialects.

Navigators/counselors now going back to make sure they pay their bills!

So the staff started calling clients, asking whether they had paid their premiums or needed assistance. It wasn’t unusual to hear people say they had received a bill but didn’t know what to do with it because they weren’t sick. Staffers had to explain that the bill must be paid every month, sick or not.

This is surely the next shoe to drop on Obamacare—getting the cash out of people who signed up (and not just the immigrants)!

Albanian ‘refugee’ racketeers busted in Philly

Diversity is strength alert for Saturday, August 24th!

Our unofficial crime reporter, ‘pungentpeppers’ has sent us another refugee crime story (yesterday it was this one from Dayton, OH) and today it’s ‘Feds charge 9 in loan-sharking, gambling operation’ (seven of the nine are Albanians who arrived in the Philadelphia area in the late 1990s).

Gee, I wonder if they could have been on that 1999 airlift—the one where the Clinton Administration brought in thousands of ‘refugees’ to South Jersey, including Albanians, that was the subject of this National War College Report?

And, remember the terror plotters known as the Ft. Dix Six—the group had Albanian members.  One of them knew the military base because his father ran a pizza parlor in a South Jersey suburb of Philly.  When you read the FBI report on the bust yesterday, note the pizza connection!  One of the would-be Muslim terrorists had arrived at Ft. Dix as a refugee several years earlier.

Here is how I began my 2010 airlift post:

I just came across this report from the National War College about how the volags (supposedly voluntary agencies but really federal contractors*) were basically in need of warm bodies to resettle (for $$$) in the US in 1999 so they pushed Gore and the National Security Council to go against professionals in the State Department and even against the wishes of the UN and airlifted tens of thousands of Kosovar “refugees” to the US during Bill Clinton’s phony baloney Bosnian War.

I was going to give you some more links on those lovely Albanian refugees, but realize we have too many!  So, before, or after, you read today’s news you might want to review our Albanian archives.  One of the most recent stories we have on Albanians was about the dog rapist, here.

Back to today’s news.  ‘Pungentpeppers’ sent us the FBI press release from yesterday which begins with this:

WASHINGTON—An indictment was unsealed today charging nine people in a loan sharking and illegal gambling ring allegedly run out of several Philadelphia businesses.

The charges were announced today by Acting Assistant Attorney General Mythili Raman of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Zane David Memeger of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and Edward J. Hanko, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Philadelphia Division.

Ylli Gjeli, 48; Fatimir Mustafaraj, 41; George Markakis, 43; Gezim Asllani, 34; Rezart Rahmi Telushi, 40; Eneo Jahaj, 26; and Ardit Pone, 35, all of Philadelphia; Erion Murataj, 35, of Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania; and Brian Jackson, 35, of Harleysville, Pennsylvania, were arrested this morning. The defendants are named in an indictment charging racketeering conspiracy, racketeering collection of unlawful debt, making extortionate extensions of credit, collections of extensions of credit by extortionate means, operating an illegal gambling business, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.

Read it all, it is very detailed.

Then this is from the Philadelphia Inquirer story:

Pizza parlor loan-sharking and gambling headquarters in Philadelphia.

Nine members of an Albanian-run gang from Northeast Philadelphia that specialized in loan-sharking and illegal gambling – backed by intimidation with a gun and a hatchet – were arrested Friday morning, federal officials said.

Only the alleged ringleader, Ylli Gjeli, had a lawyer present when those arrested appeared in Federal Court yesterday.  The Inquirer mentioned this amusing (sort of) exchange between the US Attorney and Gjeli’s attorney:

The only defendant with a lawyer present was Gjeli. Before the judge appeared, the lawyer, David Glassman, asked Assistant U.S. Attorney Salvatore Astolfi about various aspects of the case.

“No human trafficking, right?” Glassman asked.

“Right. You want us to add it?” Astolfi responded.

“Oh, no, no,” Glassman said.

Hmmmm?  Human trafficking possibly going on along with the pizza delivery business?  I wouldn’t be surprised.

See also, the FoxNews coverage here.

The open borders pushers keep telling us about how refugees/immigrants bring an entrepreneurial spirit to America and add to our economy because they open small businesses.  Every time I see a story like this one, I wonder if this is what they are talking about!

I repeat: Who took Karnamaya Mongar to have an abortion? And, why?

One day I guess we will know the answers to those questions (see my previous post for background).  Maybe after Gosnell gets his due there should be another prosecution?

I see today on Drudge that he has a link to the opening of the Kermit Gosnell abortion doctor trial in Philly and this (below) is near the end of the article.

Gosnell and his Philadelphia abortion clinic.

Gosnell’s attorney calls the prosecution “elitist” and “racist.”   From Philly.com:

He is also charged with third-degree murder in the death of a Virginia woman, Karnamaya Mongar, 41, who prosecutors allege was administered too much anesthesia during a 2009 abortion.

McMahon, however, argued that Mongar, a political refugee from Bhutan who arrived in the United States four months before her death, did not tell Gosnell or his staff that she had respiratory problems that made her more vulnerable to anesthesia.

If Mrs. Mongar had only been in the US for four months as a refugee who didn’t speak English, she would still have been under the supposedly watchful eye of a resettlement contractor.   So who helped her ‘find her way’ to Philly?

Was it Catholic Charities?

Lutheran Immigration Services?

Virginia Council of Churches?

or, the secular International Rescue Committee?

It could have been any of those four—all are resettlement contractors operating in Virginia.

I’m not convinced that a new refugee from a camp in Nepal could decide to have an abortion, find one of the few abortion clinics like Gosnell’s that still exist, get herself to another state and then be expected (without English) to give an accounting of her medical condition.  She had to have American help.   Were other refugees being taken to Gosnell?
