Just now, when I checked data for how many refugees we resettled from Afghanistan, I came across this data for which states took which refugees in fiscal year 2012. Although fiscal year 2013 ended on September 30th, 2013, I am not seeing the latest data.
African refugees arrive in Texas. Gee, isn’t this the number one red state the Leftists are aiming to turn blue?
The states which received the least number of refugees were:
Of course Wyoming with zero and not even on the list (they have wisely stayed out of the program, so far!)
And, this is so interesting Delaware is not on the list either. Isn’t that funny! Senator Joe Biden was one of the chief sponsors of the Refugee Act of 1980 along with Ted (don’t-bring-them-to-Hyannis) Kennedy and yet Delaware took no refugees.
‘Modesto man accused of holding wife captive appears in court’is the title of news yesterday from the Modesto Bee, thanks again to reader ‘pungentpeppers’ for spotting it.
Hillary helping women in Afghanistan, how about the ones in America!
A man accused of holding his wife captive for five months inside a Modesto home appeared in court Tuesday afternoon for the first time since his arrest Sunday.
Fnu [first name unknown–ed] Masehullah, 26, has been charged with false imprisonment and attempting to prevent a victim or witness from reporting a crime, both felonies, along with a misdemeanor count of battery on his spouse.
Authorities believe Mohammad Idrees, Masehullah’s brother, assisted in holding the woman captive, according to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday. Idrees is charged with felony false imprisonment and misdemeanor battery on his brother’s wife.
The couple is the product of an arranged marriage, authorities say, and the two appear to be from Afghanistan.
The complaint indicates the woman was held captive from Sept. 1 through Sunday, when Modesto police found her in north Modesto. Officers responded after a report of a fight between two people at the Marshalls store shopping center at McHenry and Standiford avenues.
The dispute was apparently between Masehullah’s wife and his brother. Authorities said the woman was found wearing a robe and a traditional Middle Eastern head covering.
The judge also arranged to have a court-appointed Farsi interpreter appear with Masehullah in court next week to ensure he understands his rights and the judicial process.
Until we learn otherwise, let’s assume these Afghans got into the US as refugees or as asylum seekers. Here are some numbers to consider. I didn’t look for any of the Special Immigrant Visa numbers—-those are the refugees we let in who supposedly helped the US military in Afghanistan.
It is hard to find numbers in one place when the Office of Refugee Resettlement is 3 years behind the times in publishing its legally requiredAnnual Report to Congress so these numbers are from several sources. As of January 31st, the ORR owes Congress reports for fiscal years 2011, 2012, and 2013!
We will keep an eye on the story and, as we learn more, we will let you know how these Muslim “brothers” happened to be adding to the ethnic diversity of America.
Weren’t we told Obamacare was going to take care of all the poor uninsured people? I guess not according to this story, one more in a series, from reporter Erika Beras on refugees without health care and insurance in Pennsylvania. Beras’ other stories are here.
From New America Media (Hat tip: ‘pungentpeppers’). This is a long report but well worth reading. Is your refugee contractor going to help care for the uninsured or dump them (after the federal money runs out) on your state and city? On your local hospital?
Top four resettlement states for Bhutanese refugees as of 2012: PA, TX, NY, and GA. http://www.cdc.gov/immigrantrefugeehealth/profiles/bhutanese/population-movements/
Just one of the featured refugees is Mira a Bhutanese refugee with lots of health problems and on a suicide watch.
Mira Chhetri knows all too well the perils of being uninsured. Chhetri, 23, came to the U.S. with her husband a couple years ago after spending most of her life in refugee camps in Nepal.
In her first few months here, she had ovarian cysts removed. The procedure was expensive, but like all of her health care needs at the time, it was covered by federal refugee medical assistance. [US taxpayer funded!—ed]
All refugees have health care coverage for the first eight months they are in the U.S. But when the eight months are over, if they don’t qualify for Medicaid or disability or have a job that provides them health care, they are at a loss.
“After eight months they are like any poor American, low-income American,” said Leslie Aizenman, who runs Refugee Services at Jewish Family and Children’s Services, one of the four local agencies tasked with acclimating new refugees to Pittsburgh.
After their medical assistance ended, Chhetri and her husband were uninsured. They both made just above minimum — too much to qualify for Medicaid. Chhetri still had pending surgeries.
Before you read this below, know that there is nothing that precludes a resettlement contractor from raising PRIVATE funds to help offset the medical costs of those it brings to your city.
The U.S. State Department issues guidelines for what the resettlement agencies have to provide refugees. But when it comes to health care, Aizenman said it’s open to interpretation.
“As regarding medical care there are three sentences about what we must do for newly arriving refugees,” she said.
The agencies must make sure refugees get an entry physical in the first 30 days, and they have to address acute medical issues.
In Pennsylvania, before 2009, there wasn’t even a standardized physical exam. Physicians generally just checked for tuberculosis, parasites and sexually transmitted diseases. They also made sure that refugees got immunizations. [Now that Pennsylvania gets so many refugees, they have stricter physical exam requirements.—ed]
Bhutanese refugees are committing suicide at alarmingly high rates (see our archive).
In Mira Chhetri’s case, in the last couple years, she and her husband have moved in and out of jobs, obtaining and losing health insurance along the way.
Along with her outstanding physical pain, in February, while she was uninsured, she attempted suicide. She spent a few days at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic. Then, she received a bill for more than $8,000 in care.

Thomas Sowell writing at National Review Online today likens the Republicans’ push for so-called ‘comprehensive immigration reform’ to something out of ‘Alice in Wonderland.’
Sowell:
Listening to discussions of immigration laws and proposals to reform them is like listening to something out of Alice in Wonderland.
Immigration laws are the only laws that are discussed in terms of how to help people who break them. One of the big problems that those who are pushing “comprehensive immigration reform” want solved is how to help people who came here illegally and are now “living in the shadows” as a result. What about embezzlers or burglars who are “living in the shadows” in fear that someone will discover their crimes? Why not “reform” the laws against embezzlement or burglary so that such people can also come out of the shadows?
Reminder to readers! The Senate-passed version of ‘Comprehensive Immigration Reform’ will send more of your money to Refugee resettlement contractors whose job will be expanded. They will be contracted to hook the newly legalized aliens up with jobs and social services that they do now (and not very well!) for refugees. And, that is why the contractors have been lobbying hard for amnesty—it is all about the money and Democrat voters!
There was a story on Sunday by Reuters that indicated Rep.Paul Ryan might be getting cold feet. What! Finger in the wind perhaps?
Meeting in NYC to plan strategy to lobby US State Department. DENNIS CLEMENTE/INQUIRER.net US Bureau
It just takes one big storm, like Typhoon Haiyan, to get the engines going in the open borders lobby to seek Temporary Protected Status for anyone from that country who happened to have a foot in the US door already—a legal or an illegal foot.
The problem with TPS is that the “temporary” refugees never go home! How do you think we happen to have a couple hundred thousand Salvadorans here! And, they are all waiting for Comprehensive Immigration Reform to become law!
After a two hour panel session on the topic in NYC, the ‘advocates’ for TPS designation for Filipinos set their sites on a letter writing campaign to Secretary of State John Kerry and Asst. Sec. of State for Population, Refugees and Migration Anne Richard. They don’t seem to know that it is the Dept. of Homeland Security that makes the final call.
NEW YORK—Getting Temporary Protected Status (TPS) granted for the Philippines now depends on a letter-writing campaign addressed to the US Secretary of State John Kerry or his assistant, Anne Richard, supporters concluded during a two-hour long panel discussion on Jan. 28 at the Philippine Consulate.
The Filipino American Legal Defense & Education Fund, Inc. (Faldef) is encouraging people to ask as many prominent individuals and organizations to sign letters that will be sent to the Secretary of State’s office.
Consul General Mariano de Leon and City Council member Dr. Eugene Matthieu called on Filipinos to work together and spread the word through Filipino-friendly messages about the need for TPS.
Why does the Philippine government care so much? Because they will reap the windfall as Filipinos working legally in America will send “home” millions in remittances.
For more information, our archive on TPS is here. And, check out the TPS website for the countries that have TPS now: El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, and Syria.
