Spying on Somali refugees keeps feds busy, busy, busy; and more Somalis on the way!

Our supposed surveillance of the Somali “community” in Minneapolis didn’t catch this jihadist—one of many Somali youths we raised on your dime! http://drrichswier.com/2014/06/20/jihad-cool-muslims-u-s-head-syria-iraq-join-isis-bring-back-caliphate/

Over the last 24 hours two stories came to my attention about how the federal government and local law enforcement supposedly have their hands full and are crafting programs and spending big bucks on surveillance of the Somali refugee “community” in several Office of Refugee Resettlement “preferred” resettlement cities—notably Minneapolis and San Diego.  They are looking for budding terrorist activity.

Both articles question how well the spy agencies and local FBI are doing.  Both are leading readers to conclude that spying on Somalis is a waste of money and take away their civil liberties.

The first article, published yesterday in the New Yorker is too long to keep my interest, maybe it will keep yours!  I feel like saying yes, we know about San Diego’s nest of Somalis connected to Al-Shabaab. We have written about them on many occasions (click here for our San Diego archive).

Although the writer is busy trying really hard to show that phone surveillance under the Patriot Act is catching only a small handful of little-fish funders of the jihad in Africa, I was most interested in what it never mentions!

Not once in this giant tome is there any reference to how the Somalis got here in the first place through the Refugee Resettlement Program of the US State Department.

Some readers, new to the whole Somali migration to America issue, would think that Somalis got in some migration ‘line’ in Africa and simply ‘found their way’ to San Diego.  Although there is much discussion about where they live in San Diego, again, not a word about the federally-funded resettlement contractors (Alliance for African Assistance, Jewish Family Services, International Rescue Committee, and Catholic Charities) who found them their apartments, or the State Department that flew them there.   The word “refugee” appears only once in the article and that is in conjunction with the word “camp” as in “refugee camp.”

One thing that is mentioned as if it is just your normal every day occurrence is the discussion about Somalis (refugees remember! who have escaped PERSECUTION) simply traveling back and forth to Somalia (in one case to find a wife).  If Somalia was safe enough for regular visits why in hell did we bring them here!

Through remittances your money is holding up hell holes around the world!

Then there is this section in the New Yorker piece (one of the few that got my attention!) that is only used to describe why the Somali star of the story needed to get involved with a hawala,  Shidaal Express, a money transfer agency.  (We first wrote about Shidaal Express in 2009 and have mentioned it a few times since, here).

In 2013, foreign remittances to Somalia reached $1.3 billion, which accounts for roughly half of the country’s G.D.P. Most of this money moves through hawalas, informal networks of Islamic money-transfer agents. Some U.S. hawalas are underground; some are affiliated with licensed banks. It’s difficult for authorities to track which hawala transfers buy food and other necessities in Somalia and which might be support for militant groups. But most agree that the current system is preferable to Somali émigrés’ making periodic trips with bundles of cash. “Somehow the money’s going to move,” Carol Beaumier, a former federal bank examiner, said in a recent interview with American Banker.

Although some of the $1.3 billion goes from other countries to Somalia, much of that comes from YOU (the US taxpayer)! through the myriad welfare programs and other state and federally funded “programs” Somali refugees tap into.

Only last month we learned about a fraudulent day care scheme in Minneapolis where funds skimmed from the state were allegedly being sent to Africa!

I will bet a buck that those ‘economic’ studies being used in cities by the pro-open borders propagandists at Welcoming America, which claim that immigrants and refugees bring boom times to troubled cities, do not include how much of a city’s money is leaving the country.

You can read the whole New Yorker story (hat tip: ‘Pungentpeppers’) yourself, if you find something you think needs to be flagged, add it as comment to this post.

The Intercept

The other story that came to my attention yesterday is from Minneapolis where the news magazine—The Intercept—a publication created and funded by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar exposes NSA information in the wake of the Snowden leak.

The article entitled, ‘Spies Among Us: How Community Outreach Programs to Muslims Blur Lines between Outreach and Intelligence,’ is apparently trying to make the point that the Somali “community” of Minneapolis is being snookered (and spied upon) by the FBI.

Here is how The Intercept story begins:

Last May, after getting a ride to school with his dad, 18-year-old Abdullahi Yusuf absconded to the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport to board a flight to Turkey. There, FBI agents stopped Yusuf and later charged him with conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization—he was allegedly associated with another Minnesota man believed to have gone to fight for the Islamic State in Syria.

To keep other youth from following Yusuf’s path, U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger recently said that the federal government would be launching a new initiative to work with Islamic community groups and promote after-school programs and job training–to address the “root causes” of extremist groups’ appeal. “This is not about gathering intelligence, it’s not about expanding surveillance or any of the things that some people want to claim it is,” Luger said.

Luger’s comments spoke to the concerns of civil liberties advocates, who believe that blurring the line between engagement and intelligence gathering could end up with the monitoring of innocent individuals. If past programs in this area are any guide, those concerns are well founded.

Documents obtained by attorneys at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law, and shared with the Intercept, show that previous community outreach efforts in Minnesota–launched in 2009 in response to the threat of young Americans joining the al-Qaeda-linked militia al-Shabab, in Somalia—were, in fact, conceived to gather intelligence.

A grant proposal from the St. Paul Police Department to the Justice Department, which the Brennan Center obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request to the FBI, lays out a plan in which Somali-speaking advocates would hold outreach meetings with community groups and direct people toward the Police Athletic League and programs at the YWCA. The proposal says that “the team will also identify radicalized individuals, gang members, and violent offenders who refuse to cooperate with our efforts.”  [I believe they need to be watched, but this is dumb!—CAIR must be jumping for joy!—ed]

“It’s startling how explicit it was – ‘You don’t want to join the Police Athletic League? You sound like you might join al-Shabab!’ said Michael Price, an attorney with the Brennan Center.

Read it all.  Sure sounds like there is a movement afoot to throw cold water on any attempt by the federal government to monitor the growing Somali COMMUNITY for possible Islamic terrorist connections.

Meanwhile, another arm of the federal government, the US State Department, is importing new Somalis to America at record speed!

The State Department has admitted well over 100,000 in the last three decades, here.  9,000 were admitted in FY 2014 here.  And, in this fiscal year (three months old) we have already admitted 2,801.  If we keep that pace, FY2015 will see 11,204 NEW Somalis!

So while everyone has angst about keeping an eye on them, many more are coming in every single day!

And, remind me!  What does America get out of this?

Americans sign letter to Saudi Arabia, offer to take lashings for “blasphemy” blogger

Now at the Univ. of Minnesota, former Asst. Secretary of State Eric P. Schwartz oversaw the resettlement of tens of thousands of Muslims to the US in the early Obama years.

I found this little bit of news interesting for one reason, one of the signatories of a letter from the American Islamic Forum for Democracy to the Saudi Arabian Ambassador to the US is former Asst. Secretary of State for Population, Refugees and Migration (in the early Obama years), Eric Schwartz, a Soros protege who we discussed here at RRW on many occasions.

Click here for many critical posts we have written about Obama’s original choice to head the refugee program at the US State Department, clearly a representative of the Hard Left.

Now at the AIFD he has put his name on the letter spearheaded by Islam reformer Zuhdi Jasser.   Read all about it here (hat tip: Cathy).

I don’t know if there is any significance to this laudable PR campaign to help save the Saudi blogger being flogged for blasphemy, but could we be turning a corner where some in politically-correct academia are beginning to understand the threat shariah law poses for the world?  Or, do they just hate Saudi Arabia?

From the American Islamic Forum for Democracy:

PHOENIX (January 20, 2015) – Five notable religious freedom advocates, including Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser, AIFD President, have signed and presented a letter to the Saudi Ambassador calling on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), to immediately release Raif Badawi. If they do not release him, they are asking that the Kingdom take them in the place of Raif Badawi in the meting out of his corporal punishment. Badawi was sentenced to prison, a monetary fine, and 1000 lashes for “blasphemy” based on his website which allowed the free exchange of religious and political ideas. His 1000 lashes are being delivered on a weekly basis every Friday in front of a mosque in Jeddah by the Saudi regime. His health was compromised by the first 50 to the point that last Friday the second 50 were delayed.

The signatories to the letter are Princeton Law Professor Robert P. George, Harvard Law Professor Mary Ann Glendon, Dr. Zuhdi Jasser, President of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, Daniel I. Mark, who teaches political science at Villanova University, Eric Schwartz, Dean, Humphrey School of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota, Hannah Rosenthal, CEO, Milwaukee Jewish Federation, and Katrina Lantos Swett, President of The Lantos Foundation. The letter requested a remittance of his punishment but further stated that in the absence of a full dismissal, each was requesting to receive 100 lashes in the place of Mr. Badawi.

Hmmmm!  What do you make of this?

US Joint Chiefs Chairman Dempsey: we need to worry about security with ‘refugee’ migration to Europe

More in our ‘Invasion of Europe’ series….

Dempsey (right) in Rome on Monday. Refugee migration a topic of concern.

From Stars and Stripes yesterday:

NAPLES, Italy — The U.S. Joint Chiefs chairman and Italian officials said Monday that Washington and Rome share concerns about the flood of migrants into Italy from the Middle East and Africa amid heightened terrorism fears in Europe.

IOM spokeman Joel Millman: Move along, nothing to see! Just poor refugees, no evidence of terrorists among them. Photo: http://www.iom.int/cms/en/sites/iom/home/news-and-views/media-contacts.html

The U.S. has warned in the past about the possible flow of foreign fighters through Europe’s southern borders as refugees flee Syria, Libya and other warring nations. European governments are increasingly worried about their own citizens who have traveled abroad to train with terrorist groups and then return home. The recent attacks in Paris and the thwarted attacks in Belgium have underscored those concerns.

Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey met with Italian Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti and Chief of Defense Adm. Luigi Binelli Mantelli on Monday. He was joined by U.S. Ambassador to Italy John R. Phillips.

The meeting included discussions about U.S. and allied operations against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

Both sides expressed concern about foreign fighters, according to a Defense Department release, and Dempsey said countries that migrants are leaving should be a part of any discussion about extremism.

Federal refugee contractor, the International Organization for Migration (the agency that processes refugees abroad for resettlement to your US cities), downplays concerns.   You have to be a complete idiot to not assume Jihadists are using the refugee flow as cover to get into Europe.

More than 170,000 migrants have entered Italy in the past year, crossing the Mediterranean Sea. That’s roughly four times the number in 2013, according to estimates released last week by the International Organization for Migration.

But an IOM official said those trying to cross into Italy are refugees and asylum-seekers escaping war or impoverished conditions.

“We don’t have any reports of infiltration or what we think would be characterized as al-Qaida or something like that using this as a launching point,” spokesman Joel Millman said.

Go here for our ‘Invasion of Europe’ series, and for more on poor Italy’s migration mess, click here.

I wonder when (if!) Joint Chiefs Chairman Dempsey will speak about Muslim migration to America as a security threat?  Not holding my breath!

Utica (the town that loves refugees) is suing the state of NY for their refugee-generated school funding crisis

When I first started this blog in 2007, this 2005 United Nations report about Utica was being blasted around America! The news today shows what ten more years of overloading a city with refugees will do.

They really should file a case against the refugee contractors and the US State Department and the Office of Refugee Resettlement too!

This is an incredible piece of news published at the Wall Street Journal yesterday and thanks to the ever-watchful ‘Pungentpeppers’ for spotting it.

This needs to be a lesson to every one of the 180 plus “welcoming” cities that host federal refugee contractors!  You will not escape the same fate; it’s just a matter of time.

Before I get to what the WSJ reported, here is the propaganda the UN and the US State Department reported from Washington ten years ago:

“Utica loves refugees,” Gene Dewey, former Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration in Washington, told a Senate hearing in 2005. Utica’s size has stabilized at around 65,000 and 10,000 of these residents nearly one in six are refugees. They come from around 30 countries and have vastly different backgrounds.  Thirty-one languages are spoken in city schools. Utica has benefited from refugees. The town was going downhill, but it is now reviving because of refugees.

Entitled, ‘Small Cities Fight for More School Aid From New York State,’ the WSJ begins with the predictable struggling student profile and then says this below (by the way, why are we still bringing refugees from Cambodia?).  Emphasis below is mine:

District officials say Utica schools lack enough resources for their 10,700 students, including 1,800 who are foreign-born. Hundreds of refugees from Somalia, Myanmar, Iraq and other war-torn lands settle in the area each year through a federal program.

Utica is one of eight small cities fighting for more state aid in a legal battle that will begin oral arguments Wednesday in state Supreme Court in Albany. The attorney general’s office has sought for six years to get higher courts to throw out the lawsuit. Lawyers for the plaintiffs say the court’s ruling could affect needy districts statewide.

[….]

On average, New York’s per-pupil education spending is the highest of any state, though there are wide gaps from district to district. According to state data, Utica spent $15,323 per pupil in the 2012-13 school year, compared with the state average of $21,118. Some affluent districts, such as Great Neck and Briarcliff Manor, spent more than $30,000 a student.

Utica officials are grappling with high poverty rates, rising enrollment and big deficits. [But wait, we were told the refugees were bring the city back from the brink of poverty!—ed]

[….]

Other cities in the case, Maisto v. New York, are Poughkeepsie, Jamestown, Port Jervis, Niagara Falls, Mount Vernon, Kingston and Newburgh.

[….]

Each city has its own concerns. Utica gets hundreds of refugees a year through a federal partnership with the nonprofit Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees***. The newcomers move into inexpensive housing that was left vacant as the local manufacturing sector has waned over the past half-century. The area has lost textile mills and a General Electric plant, among others.

Utica now serves children speaking 42 languages, including Nepali, Somali Bantu, Arabic and Bosnian. Teachers say they need smaller classes and more interpreters, social workers, guidance counselors and tutors to help students who lag behind, including American children from low-income families.  [Remember in 2005, the number of languages spoken in the school system was 30!—ed]

Many of the city’s children enter kindergarten with the skills of a 2-year-old and would benefit from more individual attention, said Lori Eccleston, the district’s curriculum director. Some arrive suffering from malnutrition or lead poisoning. Several students born in African refugee camps are blind, she said, because they didn’t get drops in their eyes at birth to prevent infections.

[….]

In Utica, 15% of children in grades three to eight passed state tests in language arts last year, and 19% did so in math. Statewide, 31% passed in each subject.

There is more, read it all!

By the way, the next time “WELCOMING AMERICA” (a federal contractor and UN propaganda pusher) shows up in your town peddling one of those economic studies supposedly showing how refugees and immigrants will bring your struggling city back to economic boom times, show them the door!

New York residents should know that your state is always in the Top Five states welcoming new refugees.

Europe’s problems with Muslim migration and Islamic terrorism keep the news media hopping

Invasion of Europe news……

First anti-Islam march in the Czech Republic last Friday. Photo: AP Photo/Petr David Josek

There is so much news now coming out of Europe, I couldn’t possibly post individually on each item (I originally had about 5 or 6 stories).  The next best thing is to give you just a taste of what is happening with this round-up.  Thanks to several regular readers who sent these stories, and special thanks to ‘Pungentpeppers’ for sending a whole bunch more this morning.

Think about it, all of these hot news stories have some connection with migrants and ‘refugees’!

Germany

We reported that PEGIDA was shut down in Dresden this week (here), but marches went on in other cities.  The PEGIDA marchers were far-outnumbered by those who want more Muslim immigration to Germany, here at the UK Telegraph.

Czech Republic

Czechs grapple with Islam and Syrian refugee issue, here at Deutsch Welle.  And, hundreds rally in Prague against Islam, here.

 Denmark

Denmark holds first PEGIDA (anti-Islamification) rally.  News at France 24.com.

Switzerland

Authorities will not release three Iraqis detained some time ago claiming that they were developing a terror plot for the Islamic State at SwissInfo.ch.

Finland

Blogger says it was a Somali Muslim who hacked two non-Muslims to death with an ax from End Times Trumpet.  Also, police monitor social media for anti-immigrant sentiment in wake of slaughter, here.

 Sweden

Fear in Sweden as unaccompanied minors (most likely teenaged boys) flood into Sweden.  See the news at The Local.

 Belgium

Belgium deploys troops in the streets and Greece arrests four in foiled plot from SkyNews.  Migrants and asylum seekers plan their own march from Brussels to Antwerp in February, here.

Italy

In Perugia, a group of five migrants kicked a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, broke it to pieces, and then urinated on it (Israel News).  More details here if you read Italian.

Spain

Spanish police have arrested two Cameroonian migrants who killed as many as 10 people by pushing them off a boat full of migrants that was caught in bad weather as it was headed towards Spain. The killers believed that a Nigerian priest on board caused the stormy seas.  More at Euro Weekly News.

Check it out, France takes the prize for the most fighters it has supplied to the jihadists in Iraq and Syria! Consequently it may have the most coming home to show off their new skills. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-30875705

France

Incredibly, the New York Times allows Marine Le Pen to tell her story.  And, in Calais about 150 illegal migrants were overcome by fumes from a fire they started, here, in French.

 Hungary

Prime Minister says Hungary is a Christian nation and immigration to the EU must be slowed at Nasdaq.com.

 Netherlands

Around 200 failed asylum seekers will be evicted from garage they have been occupying (Dutch News).

 Poland

Poland has set up refugee camps to accept around 180 refugees from the Ukraine who are of Polish descent, from the Aviationist. Poland doesn’t have much of an Islam problem (yet).

Bulgaria

We have a lot of posts on Bulgaria here at RRW.  Looks like they are continuing their fence along the Turkish border in hopes of reducing the migrant flow out of Turkey at Yahoo.News.

 UK

In addition to the wife torture/murder ‘Pungentpeppers’ reported on the other day, here is another ‘religion of peace’ adherent wife killer, Naveed Ahmed, who pleaded guilty to chopping off his wife’s head last year, from the UK Daily Mail.

It sure would be one ol’ boring Europe over there if it weren’t for all the Muslim refugees and asylum seekers producing newsworthy excitement.

Our archive on the Invasion of Europe is here.
