Foreign-born represent most of US TB cases

The other day we reported that refugees were being screened more seriously abroad and treated before setting foot on US soil (or that is what we are told anyway).

States with the highest rates of TB in the US. A few years old but still useful. http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6111a2.htm

Here is yet another article on tuberculosis—Hispanics and Asians have the highest rates of TB in America.

The article goes on to say how much this is going to cost us (the taxpayers!) going forward.

From voxxi.com:

Though the rate of tuberculosis (TB) in the United States is dropping, among certain racial and ethnic groups that is not the case. According to recent data, immigrants and those who travel to other countries frequently have the highest TB occurrence.

This means Hispanics, Asians, African Americans, and non-Hispanic whites born outside of the United States carry the largest TB burden in the country.

The issues stems from high rates of tuberculosis around the globe, with the highest incidence reports coming from Eastern Europe and Central Asia. According to the World Health Organization, many of these cases–approximately 450,000–are the drug-resistant form of TB that has developed from improper medication usage and medical protocols.

Not only do we have ‘asylum seekers’ from Mexico, but the largest group of OTMs are Chinese and Indians. Are they being tested the minute they come across the border?  I sure hope we are protecting our border guards!

In the United States, foreign-born individuals had a 13 times greater TB incidence than US-born persons and accounted for 64.6 percent of TB cases in 2013. Of these, more than half originated from one of five countries: Mexico (20 percent), The Philippines (12.6 percent), India (8 percent), Vietnam (7.4 percent), and China (6.1 percent).

Almost all of the drug-resistant TB in the US is among the foreign born!

The rate of tuberculosis among immigrant populations varies slightly from the country of origin, however. Among Asians in the U.S. who are foreign-born, there is a 95 percent rate of TB infection, compared to 75 percent of Hispanics, 40 percent of African Americans, and 23 percent of non-Hispanic whites born outside the United States. Foreign-born persons also accounted for 88.4 percent of the resistant TB cases reported in 2012.

Then this struck me as very funny—minority populations will have to be concerned with the cost of treatment going forward!  What the heck!  It is the US taxpayer that will have to bear the cost of treatment!

The latest data, presented through several Centers for Disease Control (CDC) studies, suggests there is a major dilemma minority populations in the U.S. will soon have to face; cost of treatment.

[….]

Marks suggests TB treatment on average can cost around $17,000; however, drug-resistant TB is another matter, costing approximately $134,000 (rising to $430,000 for extensively resistant TB ). Adding productivity losses to treatment costs brought the estimated per case cost for treating drug-resistant TB to $554,000 per case.

Australia: Afghan asylum-seeker charged in rape case, one victim was 9-year-old boy

From The Australian (hat tip: ‘pungentpeppers’):

Immigration Minister Morrison: He will be detained one way or another pending trial.

IMMIGRATION Minister Scott Morrison has confirmed that a man accused of abducting and raping a nine-year-old boy is an Afghan asylum-seeker.

Omid Roshan, 21, has been charged with abduction, two counts of rape and three counts of committing an indecent act with a child following the alleged incident in Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs earlier this month.

He was arrested by the NSW sexual crime squad in Sydney last week after Victorian detectives learned that he had travelled interstate.

It is alleged Mr Roshan, who lived in Dandenong, asked the boy to get into his car in the neighbouring suburb of Doveton and then drove to nearby Eumemmerring before sexually assaulting him. The boy was later released.

Mr Roshan faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday and did not seek bail.

Mr Morrison yesterday confirmed Mr Roshan was an Afghan asylum-seeker who would not live in the community while facing criminal charges. “If this individual for whatever reason happens to be released by the court to face it on another occasion then he will go straight back into detention,” Mr Morrison told Sydney radio 2GB.

One sure would hope so!

San Jose refugee workshop: depression keeps refugees from getting/keeping jobs

And, that makes their kids ashamed of them.  A psychiatrist will facilitate workshop to help parents cope.

Where is psychiatrist Song? Search the photo—she is crouching among the kids.

From the San Francisco Examiner (Hat tip: Joanne):

The Immigrant/Refugee Parent Project, a collaborative effort by several immigrant groups, will host a workshop in San Jose later this month to allow parents from various immigrant communities to share their challenges raising children in the United States.

The parents, many of whom have fled wars and persecution in their home countries, will have the opportunity to discuss their experiences, ask questions, meet new people and sample each other’s cooking.

Launched last year, the program is facilitated by adult/child psychiatrist Suzan Song…

No job=no respect:

Although the parents come from diverse cultures, Song noted their concerns are often remarkably similar. One common challenge is how children tend to more easily adjust to local cultures and learn English faster than their parents. This can lead to kids shaming their parents for not being more American, Song noted, adding that some parents say being unemployed makes it hard to command their children’s respect.

Song said while the parents are generally eager to find work, many refugees suffer from depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, which can make it difficult to get and keep a job. Conflicting social behaviors can be another source of friction.  [Like girls not wanting to wear the hijab!—ed]

At least these kids are ashamed (so far) with non-working parents living off the US taxpayer, unlike generations of inner-city kids who go on to lifelong dependence on welfare themselves—and pass it down to their offspring!

Keeping these refugee kids ashamed might in fact be their ticket to upward mobility!

CIS: US asylum system fosters fraud

Hot off the presses at the Center for Immigration Studies is a new report: ‘Asylum in the United States: How a finely tuned system of checks and balances has been effectively dismantled.’

Here is what CIS says about it in a press release today:

WASHINGTON, DC (March 26, 2014) — The erosion of checks and balances in the U.S. asylum system, designed to prevent fraud, has led to the nearly tripling of claims for asylum. A Center for Immigration Studies report examines the increased applications as well as the rubberstamping of these applications.

The number of applicants passing the preliminary “credible fear” test nearly tripled from 2012 to 2013, and has increased nearly 600 percent since 2007. Once the applicant receives asylum, they receive access to all major welfare programs.***

Author of the report, Dan Cadman, a retired INS/ICE official: They have learned how to game the system.

Fraud accounts for much of the increase. According to a DHS internal report, 70 percent of asylum applications examined were fraudulent or had strong indicators of fraud. With such a high rate of fraud, it is alarming that DHS statistics show a positive credible fear finding in 92% of all cases decided on the merits.

The CIS report finds that the Senate comprehensive immigration bill would do much to exacerbate the existing problem. Among the list of changes would be the allowing of previous asylum fraudsters to re-apply and allowing asylum to be granted instantly upon application, before any vetting occurs.

Dan Cadman, author of the report and fellow at the Center, said, “Many illegal immigrants have learned how to game the system by applying for asylum as a means of prolonging their time in the United States. If a claimant can pass the preliminary credible fear test they can buy themselves months, often years, living and working legally in the United States. A system designed to stem fraud and abuse has been undone by executive action, agency inaction, and judicial activism.”

Cadman provides nine recommendations of how Congress and the Department of Homeland Security can curb abuses, and set the asylum program on track to function as it was intended. He endorses, for example, a program of routine audits of both credible fear findings and formal asylum grants, which would include investigations of cases found to involve fraud or the withholding of material information.

“Gaming the system” is a worldwide problem as we have learned recently in our “invasion of Europe” series.

***An afterthought:  once someone is granted asylum, as mentioned here, they are given all of the same access a refugee has to welfare goodies, and they can expect ‘service’ from the federal refugee contractors.  Thus those contractors are lobbying for the so-called Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill because it means an expansion of their “services” and more federal grants coming their way!

Kenya orders all Somalis to return to refugee camps immediately…

…..expects “human rights” groups (like Human Rights Watch) to wail and moan!

Kenyan Interior Minister Joseph ole Lenku: All Somalis must return to camps! http://news.yahoo.com/photos/kenyas-interior-minister-lenku-speaks-during-news-conference-photo-192315831.html

The latest demand from the Kenyan government comes in the wake of an attack by Somalis in Mombasa which killed six Christian worshipers on Sunday (Bibles lying in pools of blood).

From Mareeg:

Kenya has ordered all Somali refugees living in urban areas to return to their camps in a bid to end attacks by armed groups carried out in retaliation for Kenya’s intervention in neighbouring Somalia.

Kenyans were asked to report any refugees or illegal immigrants outside the overcrowded camps – Dadaab in the east and Kakuma in the northwest – to the police, according to the AFP news agency.

All refugees residing outside the designated refugee camps of Kakuma and Dadaab are hereby directed to return to their respective camps with immediate effect.

Interior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku:

“Any refugee found flouting this directive will be dealt with in accordance with the law,” Interior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku said in a statement.

Sunday’s attack, in the Likoni district near Mombasa, came amid heightened warnings of a threat of violence, especially from the Somali al-Shabab armed group, in Kenya despite boosted security in major cities.

Lenku issued the order citing ”emergency security challenges” in Kenyan towns, but the move is likely to be criticised by rights groups which have discouraged similar actions in the past.

Refugee registration centers to be closed as well.

Lenku also said all refugee registration centres in Nairobi, Mombasa, Isiolo to the north and Nakuru in the northwest would be closed. He urged Kenyans to report refugees or illegal immigrants found outside the camps.

Al-Shabaab (aka al-Shabab) strikes again:

The Somali group al-Shabab and its sympathisers have carried out several attacks in Kenya, including at the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi last year in which at least 67 people were killed.

On Sunday, gunmen killed six worshippers in a church near the coastal city of Mombasa. Last week, police said they had arrested two men found to have two large bombs in a car which they intended to use in Mombasa.

At least one African country is trying to save itself and stand up to the bullies (both Somali bullies and “human rights” bullies).
